Exploring our options

• A lot of internal discussion about how best to meet the HSW training needs.

• We needed a model that would be culturally appropriate, sustainable, and self paced so that it could be used as HSW’s are hired or needed additional training.

• In 2009 a consultant was hired to do an environmental scan.

Results of Environmental Scan

• No existing programs were identified that would meet our needs.

• The province of NL has developed provincial standards for HSW education but currently there is no legislation that governs HSW’s.

• Nunatsiavut DHSD decided to develop it’s own program which was made possible through Health Canada funding.

Vision

Through this program all HSW’s who work in the HCCP will develop competencies to provide client centered care in a standardized manner. The education process will be culturally appropriate, specific to their learning needs, and designed so that individuals can work through the modules at their own pace.
