Numbers 9 The LORD spoke to Moses in the Desert of Sinai in the first month of the second year after they came out of Egypt. He said, 2 “Have the Israelites celebrate the Passover at the appointed time. 3 Celebrate it at the appointed time, at twilight on the fourteenth day of this month, in accordance with all its rules and regulations.”

Page 2: Numbers 9

4 So Moses told the Israelites to celebrate the Passover, 5 and they did so in the Desert of Sinai at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month. The Israelites did everything just as the LORD commanded Moses.

Page 3: Numbers 9

6 But some of them could not celebrate the Passover on that day because they were ceremonially unclean on account of a dead body. So they came to Moses and Aaron that same day 7 and said to Moses, “We have become unclean because of a dead body, but why should we be kept from presenting the LORD’s offering with the other Israelites at the appointed time?”

Page 4: Numbers 9

8 Moses answered them, “Wait until I find out what the LORD commands concerning you.” 9 Then the LORD said to Moses, 10 “Tell the Israelites: ‘When any of you or your descendants are unclean because of a dead body or are away on a journey, they are still to celebrate the LORD’s Passover,

Page 5: Numbers 9

11 but they are to do it on the fourteenth day of the second month at twilight. They are to eat the lamb, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 12 They must not leave any of it till morning or break any of its bones. When they celebrate the Passover, they must follow all the regulations.

Page 6: Numbers 9

13 But if anyone who is ceremonially clean and not on a journey fails to celebrate the Passover, they must be cut off from their people for not presenting the LORD’s offering at the appointed time. They will bear the consequences of their sin.

Page 7: Numbers 9

14 “‘A foreigner residing among you is also to celebrate the LORD’s Passover in accordance with its rules and regulations. You must have the same regulations for both the foreigner and the native-born.’”

The Order of NumbersNumbers 1-10:10

Numbers give order to our livesFor the people of Israel it allowed

them to know…Their strength

Renew their identityAnd build consensus

It was all about self-management

Page 9: Numbers 9

Numbers 12 “Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one. 3 You and Aaron are to number by their divisions all the men in Israel twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army. 46 The total number was 603,550.

Page 10: Numbers 9

The census allowed them to know how large and powerful they had become

To see possibilities for the futureNot former slaves lost in the desert

Page 11: Numbers 9

Numbers 2The LORD said to Moses and Aaron: 2 “The Israelites are to camp around the Tent of Meeting some distance from it, each man under his standard with the banners of his family.”

Page 12: Numbers 9

Order was establishedThese former slaves, in order to succeed,

must develop a strong sense of orderliness

Page 13: Numbers 9

Numbers 3This is the account of the family of Aaron and Moses…17 These were the names of the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari.

Page 14: Numbers 9

39 The total number of Levites counted at the LORD’s command by Moses and Aaron according to their clans, including every male a month old or more, was 22,000.

Page 15: Numbers 9

Order militarily and spiritually

Who was in leadershipWhat is the hierarchy

Page 16: Numbers 9

Numbers 42 “Take a census of the Kohathite branch of the Levites by their clans and families. 22 “Take a census also of the Gershonites…29 “Count the Merarites…

4 …the care of the most holy things.25 …to carry the curtains of the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting, its covering and the outer covering…31 …to carry the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, posts and bases…

Page 18: Numbers 9

47 All the men from thirty to fifty years of age who came to do the work of serving and carrying the Tent of Meeting 48 numbered 8,580.

Page 19: Numbers 9

Worship had to be orderly: liturgyThis nation could thrive under Yahweh

But Yahweh is a God of order not a God of chaos

Page 20: Numbers 9

Numbers 52 “Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has an infectious skin disease or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean because of a dead body. 3 Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.”

Page 21: Numbers 9

6 “Say to the Israelites: ‘When a man or woman wrongs another in any way and so is unfaithful to the LORD, that person is guilty 7 and must confess the sin he has committed. He must make full restitution for his wrong, add one fifth to it and give it all to the person he has wronged.

Page 22: Numbers 9

12 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If a man’s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him…14 …if feelings of jealousy come over her husband and he suspects his wife…

15 then he is to take his wife to the priest.

Page 23: Numbers 9

This needed to be a people with rules and regulations

If they could not manage themselves, how could they

possibly manage a nation

Page 24: Numbers 9

Numbers 62 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If a man or woman wants to make a special vow, a vow of separation to the LORD as a Nazirite, 3 he must abstain from wine and other fermented drink…5 “ ‘During the entire period of his vow of separation no razor may be used on his head.

Page 25: Numbers 9

23 “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: 24 -26 “ ‘ “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.” ’

Page 26: Numbers 9

There were standardsAnd rules about exceptions to the rules

Otherwise anyone could claim leadershipEverything would be in constant flux

Page 27: Numbers 9

Numbers 7When Moses finished setting up the tabernacle, he anointed it and consecrated it and all its furnishings. He also anointed and consecrated the altar and all its utensils. 2 Then the leaders of Israel, the heads of families who were the tribal leaders in charge of those who were counted, made offerings.

22 Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out.

Page 34: Numbers 9

Standards for yearly celebrationsExceptions to the rules

Reminders that God was ultimately in charge

Numbers 102 “Make two trumpets of hammered silver, and use them for…3 …the whole community... 4 …the leaders…5 …to set out.

Page 36: Numbers 9

8 “The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to blow the trumpets. 9 When you go into battle…10 Also at your times of rejoicing…

Use of technology as the group becomes larger and more difficult to manage

The acknowledgement that the bigger a group is, the less personal it feels

Putting it all togetherIs there order to our lives?

Do we know our priorities? Do we know where we came form
