‘the final Destination’ Easily trumps ‘halloween 2’Phil ContrinoSunday, August 30

The Final Destination was able to defeat Hal-loween 2 in the battle of the horror films this weekend by raking in an impressive estimated $28.3 million, which marks the strongest open-ing weekend of the series. H2 started off its theatrical run with a modest $17.4 million.

A fifth installment in the Final Destination series is now likely. Plus, the success of TFD shows that there is a genuine market for 3D horror films, since the opening improved upon My Bloody Valentine 3D’s debut haul of $21.2 million in January.

TFD played on approximately 1,700 screens and those screens accounted for 70% of its total gross.

Inglourious Basterds dropped 47% during its sophomore frame and its total domestic haul has now crossed the $70 million mark. Quen-tin Tarantino’s World War II flick is showing respectable staying power and hitting the $100 million plateau is a very real possibility.

Taking Woodstock failed to make much of a dent this weekend. The Ang Lee flick landed in 9th place this weekend with a slightly under-whelming haul of $3.7 million.

Opening at six locations in New York, The Sep-tember Issue posted an impressive location av-erage of $40,013 for a debut haul of $240,078. The Vogue/Anna Wintour doc should do solid business as it expands across the country.
