TrappedWhile enroute to Republic (Mo.) for ita Sept.20th date the Carson & Barnes Circus trucksand drivers were ticketed for trying to avoida highway weighing station. In addition tobeing delayed for some six hours the actioncost the show several hundred dollars infines.

Local observers report that a few miles fromthe weigh station the circus trucks took tothe back roads. However, the Missouri High-way Patrol was sitting there waiting for them. The police were reportedly scattered all overthe area, waiting and watching. Despite thisten of the trucks got through without beingstopped.

Circus officials reported that all their trucksare under the minimum state weight limit, but when possible they like to avoid weighstations because of the long delay and thehassle they receive from state people. Theycited an example in Texas, when early thisspring the state police stopped the show andsearched the trucks, yet refused to let anytrucks move on, even after they had beensearched.

Because of the delays the circus didn't getits big top into the air until about 4:30 p.m.and the first show was getting underway at6 p.m. .

In Washington, DC., it is against the law toallow your children to become acrobats, cir-cus riders or tightrope walkers. The penaltyis a fine of $250 and two years in jail.

Thank YouMARLAN BUTCHER

of King Bros. Circus for yourpurchase of a Yellowstone foryour wife, SUSAN.

S&G VisitThe Sells & Gray Circus came into Batavia(Ohio) for two shows on Sept. 24th and hadsome competition from the local footballteam. The cool 55 degree weather had folkssitting on their hands for the most part, butwhen they did applaud you knew they enjoy-ed the performers.

Ticket prices were $3.00 for adults and$2.00 for the children. The show was de-layed about 15 minutes in an effort to getfolks into the side show. An extra 50 centswas charged for all side seats and most ofthe items on sale were priced at 50 cents.

The performance itself was great and thekids especially loved the dogs. The singletrapeze act, trampoline, riding number, theperch routine, and teeterboard acts broughtgood reactions from the crowd.

However, the audience reacted best whenall three rings were going at the same time. The best and most deserving applause wentto the elephant number, a very act.

The only real comedy was during the Bonnieand Clyde number and it seemed the clownand audience weren't communicating. <

W&R NotesA generally good year has been reported bythe Wallace & Rogers Circus which will soonwind up its 1976 tour in Southern California."There were weeks when we didn't thinkthings were going very well", says JohnUart/i ' l l , "but when you compare what wehad to problems other shows faced we've hada very good year."

The show played throughout the Westernstates, Canada and Alaska, in a combinationof repeat and new dates. Only one day waslost and that was because of a storm. On oneoccasion a night show was cancelled whenstrong winds swept across the Canadianplains, forcing the quick tear-down of theshow.

A record was achieved in Alaska when aftertwo shows the circus made a ferry jump tothe next spot, gave two performances, and

then was back on the ferry heading for the'next location. This was followed by a driveacross a mountain range. All shows were pre-sented on time and good crowds filled thetent for each performance.

The Hart/oil Family is confident that 1977will be a good year for them and they areplanning several changes during the wintermonths. Some new acts will be added, a newseat wagon will be built and a new tent hasbeen ordered.

When asked about the show's 1977 tourplans, John Hartzell told CR, "We'll be inAlaska early next year and if anyone wantsto beat us up there they'll have to wearsnowshoes."

The show's program features: double trapeze;trained macaws; seals; clown; Spanish web;magic/illusions; sword balance; trained dog;sponge dive; clown; Tika, the elephant;trapeze acts; aerial motorcycle.

FLASH!! STEVIE (Scon) and SERGE CORONASare expecting an heir....A weekend circus, begin-ning in February and continuing for 15 weeks inthe New York City area will be unveiled using aone-ring format.

FLYING SEGARAS did not make the Akron/Cleveland dates for G-M due to the loss of theirmale leaper. STEELE GAONA Flyers replacedthem....ERIC JAEGER is now the rigger for theQUASSARS opening this month with CIRCO UN-ION in Mexico....Circus Vargas has decided againstthair Mexican tour in December because of the"Peso devaluation". They will have 3 weeks offand reopen in January « Atlanta. What an open-ing it will be, too! Rumors about great expan-sions are ALL TRUE which I'll detail in latercolumns and articles.

Drunks see Pink Elephants, but what do drunkenelephants sae? Ask JACKIE, i G M bull stricken.with "flu" who was given i fifth of booze plus22 cc's of antibiotic. ALFONSO MAGANA calledIVAN HENRY to ascertain the proper dosgaewhich is on CC per hundred pounds.

Saddened to laarn that FRANCINE DE RISKIE(Pealer) died suddenly of a cerebral hemmorage.

Her sisters are Lucy, married to BOB SNOWDEN,and Gayle, married to HAROLD BARNES. BrotherFrank is canvas boss on Circus Vargas.

ANITA KEPPO and TOM OESIMINI are no longerwith Royal Hinneford....JAN BICKMORE filed andgot bick her 1975 tax dollars piid out in Canada....WALLY NAGHTIN's wife DORIS is now in Eng-land visiting her parents....LUCY and LACEYTOTH finally realized a lifelong dream by ac-quiring a Sarasota homa (right behind JOE andELIZABETH BAUER). Question the couple aretouring with Circus Vargas, so when will they havetime to enjoy it?

ANNA DEL MONTE is back in the business, stitching new spec wardrobe for Circus Vargas. Herson, Pinky, is doing contortion in the CV sideshow. ..VILMA LORENZO made the web indladder costumes for Sells & Gray. .MARTAFLORES has been voted that show's most glamor-ous "clotheshorse", unveiling new costumes atleast twice a month....FRED and LONI VANVOORDEN had the side of their Airstream scrapedat a truck stop. CLIFFORD VARGAS told me his show's appearance in Spanish Harlem was an absolute "night-mare". Show played i totil of 3 diys out of 6.To keep their teirdown i secret, ill dismantling ofseats and rigging was done at 1 ayem with loud, rock music blaring. The next morning Cliff wasinterviewed on the NBC TODAY show and thenthe tent, itself, was torn down. Says Cliff: "It wasthe fastest teardown on record!" The circus genius, incidentally, has been profiled by the New York-er magazine.

Nebr. DateHoliday Hippodrome which showed at the*City Auditorium, Sept. 23rd, under sponsor-ship of the Beatrice Seratoma Club proved tobe the finest Circus-type indoor productionthis reporter has ever seen. The show is fastmoving, well costumed and presented withgood showmanship and every act was a goodone.

It lacks only clowns and elephants to qualifyit as a genuine indoor circus. Manager FloydBradbury told me that they had been enjoyingconsistently good business with repeat engage-ments the rule, and after seeing the perform-ance it is easy to understand why this show isa winner.

The 90 minute performance ran as follows:Miss Chona, tightwire; Floyd Bradbury, magicand illusions; The Albertis, rolling globes; Wai-ly Wast wood and Son, unicycling and juggling;Floyd Bradbury, balloon sculpturing:

After intermission came: Angela Wilnpw andher trained collies; Giovoni's Plate Spinning;Floyd Bradbury, ventriloquist; and The East-woods, gorilla parody.

SabotageWhat has been described as a clear-cut caseof sabotage was discovered shortly before aperformance of the RBBB Blue Unit at Den-ver.

A workman checking the electrical cablesused for Charly Baumann's mirrored pedestaltrick, found that one 110 volt line had beentampered with. The line is used to return thepedestals to the outer rim of the arena whenthe trick is over. The cable runs through aneye-bolt and is tied there so it cannot pullloose from the motor inside.

It was discovered that the cable was not inthe eye-bolt, but had been removed and thentied in such a way 'ha t any pressure wouldrelease it, thus it could pull away from theinternal electrical system, leaving a live wireloose inside the arena.

• An inspection revealed the cable had beenremoved from the bolt and the bolt was re-locked. An accidental forcing of the boltwould have left it sprung with a gap, butthis was not the case.

BOB MOMYER, who worked for Hunt Bros, early this year, has been named Assistantto BILL BALLENTINE at the Ringling Col-lege for Clowns. He will teach magic andclownxmake-up.
