The Nuit des images is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Musée de l’Elysée this year with its innovative and mind-boggling schemes! The entire museum will come alive and unleash itself on Saturday June 27, from 3pm to 2am, to celebrate this anniversary with its public. Join us. It’s free!

"An integral part of the cultural landscape of Lausanne since 2011, the Nuit des images is the climax of the 30th anniversary festivities of the Musée de l’Elysée. It is the opportunity to discover, at exactly 9:45 pm, the identity of the winner of the Prix Elysée, launched in partnership with Parmigiani Fleurier in 2014, followed by a tribute to the humanist photographer, Sabine Weiss, and the cartes blanches offered to our partner institutions of the Pôle muséal, the mcb-a and the mudac", emphasizes Tatyana Franck, director of the Musée de l’Elysée.

This year, the Nuit des images calls upon all of the senses and introduces visitors to totally new experiences. "The Nuit des images celebrates photography in all of its states (...) The museum’s collections, the historic building in which it resides and the hidden corners of the Elysée gardens come alive to welcome its public and celebrate these images with them!" says Pauline Martin, curator of the event.

Projects developed expressly for the museum’s 30th anniversary are featured: The LP Company’s duo explored the museum’s archives and produced a vinyl record freely inspired by its history and its collections; students from the CEPV made photographs in situ in its gardens; those from the HEAD gave free rein to their imagination using images – often anonymous – from the museum’s collections; and the artist Romain Tardy, will make the museum’s façade go up in flames with an amazing sound and light show.

The Nuit des images is also the perfect occasion to discover the secrets of photography! With your whole family, make a pinhole camera in the museum’s workshops; for the more athletically inclined, take a time-lapse photograph; and for the poets among you, explore photography through slam culture.

At On Print, a forum for encounters and discoveries that reveals the breadth of the Swiss alternative publishing scene with editors from all over Switzerland, the now trilingual magazine ELSE, with its new graphic design, will be presented, with a tribute to René Burri.

In a nutshell, the 2015 Nuit des images offers visitors original performances designed expressly for the occasion, some 30 artistic projects for a total of 5 hours of projections, artists from all over the world (Australia, the USA, Iceland, England, France, Germany, Switzerland, etc.), champagne, wine and spritz bars, catering, concerts and a multitude of discoveries that will make this event the rendezvous of images not to be missed!

What is photography in its simplest form, if not writing with light? The pinhole camera consists of a little hole that lets light enter a box and thus makes it possible to capture an image of the outside reality on photographic paper. You are invited to a workshop that is as educational as it is fun, focused on this optical experience and this historic technique invented in the 19th century! Discover the basic principles of pinhole photography in four steps.

It’s your turn to play!• Chronophotograph yourself! When science inspires art,

And the winner is.... Discover the winner of the first edition of the Prix Elysée, with the support of Parmigiani Fleurier, during the Nuit des images.

The Prix ElyséeLaunched in 2014, the Prix Elysée is a prize that supports production in the field of photography. It is the result of a partnership between the Musée de l’Elysée and Parmigiani Fleurier, offering financial aid and museum support to mid-career artists devoted to photography and books.

The eight nomineesEight nominees from among 400 candidates from around the world were selected by the museum in June 2014. Anoush Abrar, Mari Bastashevski, Philippe Chancel, Annabel Elgar, Agnès Geoffray, Martin Kollar, Marco Poloni and Kourtney Roy each received a contribution of CHF 5,000 towards the initial presentation of an original project in the Nominees’ Book, published for the occasion. An exhibition of the nominees’ projects took place at the Musée de l’Elysée from January 30 to May 3, 2015.

The juryThe jury for this first edition met in the spring of 2015. Il was composed of seven members: four international experts from the fields of photography and publishing and three representatives of the Prix Elysée’s founding partners.

ELSE #9, a new concept

The 9th issue of ELSE will be published on the occasion of the Nuit des Images. In this issue, the magazine, under the direction of Tatyana Franck, will explore uncharted waters and defend the plurality of the contemporary photographic scene. Both an iconoclastic artists’ book and a curatorial platform with its radical esthetic, ELSE continues to spotlight the image, especially that of the work of emerging artists. In order to provide a historical perspective of these contemporary works, the magazine now offers a portfolio dedicated to the museum’s collections.

In addition to its new graphic design created by Marie Lusa, the magazine has a new international editorial committee composed of Martin Parr, Joachim Schmid, Erik Kessels, Claude Hudelot, Alexis Fabry, Joshua Chuang and Jean-Hubert Martin. Moreover, in view of ELSE’s ambition to become an integral part of the Swiss cultural landscape, the texts will also be published in German.

30 JAN VAN DER TIL, ‹ BOOK IV › – DOING THINGSPRÉSENTÉ PAR JOACHIM SCHMID

J’ai d’abord découvert le travail de Jan van der Til dans le cadre d’une présentation de « Book III ». Il s’agit d’un bloc de papier de bureau constitué de 250 feuilles A3 pliées en deux contenant chacune dans leur pli des feuillets libres de for mat A4 imprimés au jet d’encre en noir et blanc d’images de plan tes ou d’activités de jardinage. Le séquen-çage des pages importe peu ; il peut être différent d’un exemplaire à l’autre. L’ouvrage se pré sente comme une rame de pa pier enve-loppée d’un film, pas de couver -ture, pas de reliure, pas d’ISBN, pas de conneries de ce genre.

Avant « Book III », il y a eu « Book I » et « Book II », et maintenant « Book IV » et « Book V » sont en cours de réalisation. C’est aussi simple que cela. Les livres sont liés mais chacun possède ses carac-téristiques propres.

« Book IV » se concentre sur les « guides pratiques ». Ces manuels illustrés expliquent et montrent comment tresser une natte, fabri-quer un pot, boucher un trou, laver un cheval, casser une assiette, fumer un hareng, se laver les dents, couper un cochon, peindre une chaise en osier, plier une feuille de papier, glisser une saucisse dans une tranche d’ananas, ou encore comment frapper quelqu’un à l’entrejambe lorsque nécessaire. Des choses terriblement intéres-santes. Si vous n’êtes pas con-vaincus, jetez tout de même un œil sur ces images.

Ces photographies sont minu-tieusement mises en scènes. Mais sans les légendes et hors contexte, les choses ne sont plus aussi claires : les images ont leur propre vie. Les mains deviennent des acteurs et les objets des accessoires énigmatiques dans une série de scénettes insondables. Pour le lec-teur détaché, le propos initial peut rapidement devenir anecdotique tandis que les détails périphé riques focalisent l’attention. Ces photo-graphies semblent avoir été réali-sées par un jumeau caché du té-lescope spatial Hubble, mais depuis une perspective inversée. Nous observons et interrogeons les hommes autant que nous-mêmes, pour découvrir des aliens.

The first thing I saw by Jan van der Til was a presentation of “Book III”. This one is a substantial block of office paper, consisting of 250 folded A3 sheets, each of them holding a few loose A4 sheets, black and white inkjet prints depicting plants or gardening acti-vities. The sequence of pages does not matter; it may be different in every copy of the book. It comes as a shrink-wrapped stack of paper, no cover, no binding, no ISBN, no bullshit.

Before “Book III”, there were “Book I” and “Book II”; now “Book IV” and “Book V” are in the works. Simple and clear. The books are related but each one has its distinct features.

The source material for “Book IV” are “How to” books. These illustrated manuals explain and show how to braid hair; how to make a pot; how to fill a hole; how to wash a horse; how to break a plate; how to dry a herring; how to clean one’s teeth; how to fillet a piglet: how to paint a wicker chair; how to fold a sheet of paper; how to stick a sausage into a slice of pineapple; or how to kick someone in the groin if need be. Terribly interesting things. If you don’t think so, have a look at the photos nevertheless.

These photographs are care-fully staged. But without their cap-tions and taken out of context, things are not so clear any more: the pictures take on a life of their own. Hands turn into actors and things become enigmatic props in a series of inscrutable plays. For the uninvolved viewer, the main issue may soon be a minor point, as peripheral details become the focus of attention. These photo-graphs seem to be made by an unknown twin of the Hubble space telescope, but from an inverted perspective. We are looking at and wondering about our fellow human beings and about ourselves, and we discover aliens.

Das erste, was ich von Jan van der Til gesehen habe, war eine Buch-vorstellung von «Book III». Das ist ein dicker Stapel Büropapier aus 250 gefalteten DIN-A3-Blättern, denen jeweils ein paar lose schwarz- weisse DIN-A4-Tintenstrahldrucke von Pflanzen oder Gartenarbeiten beiliegen. Die Reihenfolge der Seiten spielt dabei keine Rolle und ist je nach Exemplar unterschied-lich. Geliefert wird ein einge-schweisster Stapel Papier, ohne Deckblatt, ohne Bindung, ohne ISBN-Nummer oder sonstigen Schwachsinn.

Vor «Book III» gab es «Book I» und «Book II», gerade sind «Book IV» und «Book V» in Arbeit. Die Bücher haben zwar einen Bezug zuei nan der, aber jedes hat seine Eigen heiten.

Das Quellenmaterial für «Book IV» sind Ratgeber, Bilderbücher, die zeigen und erklären, wie man Haare flicht, wie man eine Schüssel macht, wie man ein Loch füllt, wie man ein Pferd wäscht, wie man einen Teller zerbricht, wie man einen Hering trocknet, wie man sich die Zähne putzt, wie man ein Ferkel filetiert, wie man einen Rattan-stuhl streicht, wie man ein Blatt Papier faltet, wie man eine Wurst durch eine Scheibe Ananas steckt, oder wie man jemanden in die Eier tritt, falls es die Situation erfor dert. Ganz furchtbar interessante Dinge. Wenn Sie das nicht finden, sehen Sie sich die Fotos trotzdem mal an.

Diese Fotografien sind sorgfältig inszeniert. Aber ohne Bildunter-schriften und Zusammenhang sind die Dinge nicht mehr so klar, die Bilder entwickeln ein Eigenleben. Hände werden zu Darstellern und Gegenstände zu rätselhaften Requisiten, eine Serie von undurch-schaubaren Theaterstücken. Für den unbeteiligten Betrachter rückt das Hauptanliegen schnell in den Hintergrund, sobald abseitige Einzel heiten seine ganze Auf-merksamkeit beanspruchen. Die Fotografien wirken wie mit einem unbekannten Zwilling des Hubble- Teleskops aufgenommen, nur eben umgekehrt. Wir sehen und wundern uns über unsere mensch-lichen Artgenossen und uns selbst – zum Vorschein kommen Ausserirdische.
