• READ THIS OWNERʼS MANUAL CAREFULLYPay special attention to the safety messages that appear throughout the manual. Thesemessages are fully explained in the ʻʻA Few Words About Safetyʼʼ section which appearsbefore the Contents page.

This manual should be considered a permanent part of the motorcycle and should remain withthe motorcycle when resold.

When service is required, remember that your Honda dealer knows your motorcycle best. If youhave the required mechanical “know-how” and tools, your dealer can supply you with an officialHonda Service Manual to help you perform many maintenance and repair tasks.

Of course, it is not practical or possible to warn you about all hazards associated with operatingor maintaining a motorcycle. You must use your own good judgment.

You will find important safety information in a variety of forms, including:

• Safety Labels - on the motorcycle.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATIONYour motorcycle can provide many years ofservice and pleasure - i f you takeresponsibil i ty for your own safety andunderstand the challenges that you can meeton the road.

There is much that you can do to protectyourself when you ride. Youʼll find manyhelpful recommendations throughout thismanual. Following are a few that we considerto be most important.

Always Wear a HelmetIt ʼs a proven fact: helmets significantlyreduce the number and severity of headinjuries. So always wear an approvedmotorcycle helmet and make sure yourpassenger does the same. We alsorecommend that you wear eye protection,sturdy boots, gloves, and other protectivegear (page 2).

Make Yourself Easy to SeeSome drivers do not see motorcycles becausethey are not looking for them. To makeyourself more visible, wear bright reflectiveclothing, position yourself so other drivers cansee you, signal before turning or changinglanes, and use your horn when it will helpothers notice you.

Ride Within Your LimitsPushing the limits is another major cause ofmotorcycle accidents. Never ride beyondyour personal abil i t ies or faster thanconditions warrant. Remember that alcohol,drugs, fatigue and inattention cansignificantly reduce your ability to make goodjudgements and ride safely.

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY

Donʼt Drink and RideAlcohol and riding donʼt mix. Even one drinkcan reduce your abil i ty to respond tochanging conditions, and your reaction timegets worse with every additional drink. Sodonʼt drink and ride, and donʼt let your friendsdrink and ride either.

Keep Your Bike in Safe ConditionFor safe riding, itʼs important to inspect yourmotorcycle before every ride and perform allrecommended maintenance. Never exceedload limits, and only use accessories thathave been approved by Honda for thismotorcycle. See page 4 for more details.

PROTECTIVE APPARELFor your safety, we strongly recommend thatyou always wear an approved motorcyclehelmet, eye protection, boots, gloves, longpants, and a long-sleeved shirt or jacketwhenever you ride. Although completeprotection is not possible, wearing propergear can reduce the chance of injury whenyou ride.Following are suggestions to help youchoose proper gear.

n WARNINGNot wearing a helmet increases the chanceof serious injury or death in a crash.

Be sure you and your passenger alwayswear a helmet, eye protection and otherprotective apparel when you ride.

Helmets and Eye ProtectionYour helmet is your most important piece ofriding gear because it offers the bestprotection against head injuries. A helmetshould f i t your head comfortably andsecurely. A bright-coloured helmet can makeyou more noticeable in traff ic, as canreflective strips.

An open-face helmet offers some protection,but a full-face helmet offers more. Alwayswear a face shield or goggles to protect youreyes and help your vision.

Additional Riding GearIn addition to a helmet and eye protection,we also recommend:• Sturdy boots with non-slip soles to help

protect your feet and ankles.• Leather gloves to keep your hands warm

and help prevent blisters, cuts, burns andbruises.

• A motorcycle riding suit or jacket forcomfort as well as protection. Bright-coloured and reflective clothing can helpmake you more noticeable in traffic. Besure to avoid loose clothes that could getcaught on any part of your motorcycle.

LOAD LIMITS AND GUIDELINESYour motorcycle has been designed to carryyou and one passenger. When you carry apassenger, you may feel some differenceduring acceleration and braking. But so longas you keep your motorcycle well-maintained, with good tyres and brakes, youcan safely carry loads within the given limitsand guidelines.

However, exceeding the weight limit orcarrying an unbalanced load can seriouslyaffect your motorcycleʼs handling, brakingand stabil i ty. Non-Honda accessories,improper modifications, and poormaintenance can also reduce your safetymargin.

The following pages give more specificinformation on loading, accessories andmodifications.

LoadingHow much weight you put on yourmotorcycle, and how you load it, areimportant to your safety. Anytime you ridewith a passenger or cargo you should beaware of the following information.

n WARNINGOverloading or improper loading can causea crash and you can be seriously hurt orkilled.

Follow all load limits and other loadingguidelines in this manual.

Load LimitsFollowing are the load l imits for yourmotorcycle:

Maximum weight capacity:197 kg (434 lb)

Includes the weight of the rider, passenger,all cargo and all accessoriesMaximum cargo weight:

27 kg (60 lb)

Putting too much weight in individual storagecompartments can also affect stability andhandling. So be sure to stay within the limitsgiven below:

Maximum weight:in each saddlebag 5.0 kg (11.0 lb)in each fairing pocket 1.0 kg (2.2 lb)

The weight of added accessories will reducethe maximum cargo weight you can carry.

Loading GuidelinesYour motorcycle is primarily intended fortransporting you and a passenger. You maywish to secure a jacket or other small itemsto the seat when you are not riding with apassenger.

If you wish to carry more cargo, check withyour Honda dealer for advice, and be sure toread the information regarding accessories onpage 6.

Improperly loading your motorcycle can affectits stabil i ty and handling. Even if yourmotorcycle is properly loaded, you shouldride at reduced speeds and never exceed130 km/h (80 mph) when carrying cargo.

Follow these guidelines whenever you carrya passenger or cargo:• Check that both tyres are properly inflated

(page 46).• If you change your normal load, you may

need to adjust your rear suspension (page32).

• To prevent loose items from creating ahazard, make sure that al l cargo issecurely tied down before you ride away.

• Place cargo weight as close to the centerof the motorcycle as possible.

• Balance cargo weight evenly on bothsides.

• To avoid possible heat damage to theheadlight lens, do not cover the headlightlens with baggage or clothing.

Accessories and ModificationsModifying your motorcycle or using non-Honda accessories can make yourmotorcycle unsafe. Before you considermaking any modifications or adding anaccessory, be sure to read the followinginformation.

n WARNINGImproper accessories or modifications cancause a crash in which you can be seriouslyhurt or killed.

Follow all instructions in this ownerʼs manualregarding accessories and modifications.

AccessoriesWe strongly recommend that you use onlyHonda Genuine Accessories that have beenspecifically designed and tested for yourmotorcycle. Because Honda cannot test allother accessories, you must be personallyresponsible for proper selection, installation anduse of non-Honda accessories. Check withyour dealer for assistance and always followthese guidelines:

• Make sure the accessory does not obscureany lights, reduce ground clearance andbanking angle, limit suspension travel orsteering travel, alter your riding position orinterfere with operating any controls.

• Be sure electrical equipment does notexceed the motorcycleʼs electrical systemcapacity (page 144). A blown fuse cancause a loss of lights or engine power.

• Do not pull a trailer or sidecar with yourmotorcycle. This motorcycle was notdesigned for these attachments, and theiruse can seriously impair your motorcycleʼshandling.

ModificationsWe strongly advise you not to remove anyoriginal equipment or modify your motorcyclein any way that would change its design oroperation. Such changes could seriouslyimpair your motorcycleʼs handling, stabilityand braking, making it unsafe to ride.

Removing or modifying your lights, mufflers,emission control system or other equipmentcan also make your motorcycle illegal.

IMAGE LABELSThe following pages describe the labelmeanings. Some labels warn you of potentialhazards that could cause serious injury.Others provide important safety information.Read this information carefully and donʼtremove the labels.

If a label comes off or becomes hard to read,contact your Honda dealer for a replacement.

There is a specific symbol on each label. Themeanings of each symbol andlabel are as follows.

ACCESSORIES AND LOADING WARNING LABELWARNINGACCESSORIES AND LOADING• The safety stability and handling of this motorcycle may be

affected by the addition of accessories and luggage.• Read carefully the instructions contained in userʼs manual

and installation guide before installing any accessory.• The total weight of accessories and luggage added to

riderʼs and passengerʼs weight should not exceed 197 kg(434 lb), which is the maximum weight capacity.

• The luggage weight must not exceed 27 kg (60 lb) underany circumstances.

(1) Fuel gauge Shows approximate fuel supply available (page 25).The fuel gauge needle will swing to the maximumscale on the dial once when the ignition switch isturned ON

(2) Speedometer Shows riding speed.This shows your speed in kilometers per hour(km/h) and/or miles per hour (mph) depending onthe type.The speedometer needle will swing to themaximum scale on the dial once when the ignitionswitch is turned ON.

(3) Left turn signal indicator (green) Flashes when the left turn signal operates.Should light for a few seconds and then go offwhen the ignition switch is turned ON.

(4) Neutral indicator (green) Lights when the transmission is in neutral. Shouldalso light for a few seconds and then go off whenthe ignition switch is turned ON.

(6) PGM-FI malfunction indicator lamp(MIL) (amber)

Lights when there is any abnormality in the PGM-FI(Programmed Fuel Injection) system. Should alsolight for a few seconds and then go off when theignition switch is turned ON and engine stop switch isat run.

If it comes on at any other time, reduce speed andtake the motorcycle to your Honda dealer as soon aspossible.

(7) Right turn signal indicator(green)

Flashes when the right turn signal operates. Shouldlight for a few seconds and then go off when theignition switch is turned ON.

(8) Tachometer Shows engine revolutions per minute.The tachometer needle will swing to the maximumscale on the dial once when the ignition switch isturned ON.

(9)Tachometer red zone Never allow the tachometer needle to enter the redzone, even after the engine has been broken in.

Running the engine beyond recommended maximumengine speed (the beginning of the tachometer redzone) can damage the engine.

NOTICE

(10) Coolant temperature gauge Shows coolant temperature (page 26).The coolant temperature gauge needle will swing tothe maximum scale on the dial once when the ignitionswitch is turned ON.

(11) High beam indicator (blue) Lights when the headlight is on high beam. Should alsolight for a few seconds and then go off when the ignitionswitch is turned ON.

(12) SET button This button is used to adjust the time (page 30), andunits for distance (page 29). E type only.

(13) Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)indicator (amber) (NT700VA)

This light normally comes on when the ignition is turnedON, and goes off after you ride the motorcycle atspeed above 10 km/h (6 mph). If there is a problemwith the Anti-lock Brake System, this light flashes andremains on (page 86).

(14) Immobilizer system (HISS) indicator(red)

This indicator lights for a few seconds when theignition switch is turned ON and the engine stop switchis at (RUN). It will then go off if the properly-codedkey has been inserted. If an improperly-coded keyhas been inserted, the indicator will remain on andthe engine will not start (page 55).

(16) Low oil pressure indicator (red) Lights when the engine oil pressure is below normaloperating range. Should light when ignition switch isON and engine is not running. Should go out whenthe engine starts, except for occasional flickering ator near idling speed when engine is warm.

Running the engine with insufficient oil pressure maycause serious engine damage.

Initial DisplayWhen the ignition switch is turned ON, thedisplay will temporarily show all the modesand digital segments so you can make surethe liquid crystal display is functioning properly.

The unit ʻʻmile/lʼʼ (1) will be displayed only forE type.

Digital clock (2) and tripmeter (3) will reset ifthe battery is disconnected.

Fuel GaugeThe fuel gauge (1) shows the approximatefuel supply available in a graduated display.

When the gauge needle enters the red band(2), fuel will be low and you should refill thetank as soon as possible. The amount of fuelleft in the tank with the vehicle set uprightwhen the needle enters the red band isapproximately:

Coolant Temperature GaugeThe coolant temperature gauge (1) showscoolant temperature.

When the needle begins to move above theC (Cold) mark (2), the engine is warmenough for the motorcycle to be ridden.The normal operating temperature range iswithin the section between the H and Cmarks. If the needle reaches the H (Hot)mark (3), stop the engine and check thereserve tank coolant level. Read pages 39-40and do not ride the motorcycle until theproblem has been corrected.

Exceeding maximum running temperaturemay cause serious engine damage.

Odometer / Tripmeter / Current Fuel Consumption Meter/ Average Fuel Consumption MeterPush the SEL button (1) repeatedly tochange the display mode.

OdometerShows accumulated mileage.

TripmeterShows mileage per trip.There are two tripmeters, tripmeter A (3) andtripmeter B (4). Switch between the A and Bdisplays by pressing the SEL buttonrepeatedly.To reset the tripmeter, push and hold theSEL button for more than 2 seconds with thedisplay in the tripmeter A or tripmeter Bmode.

Current Fuel Consumption MeterIndicates the momentary fuel consumption ofeach 3 seconds during engine operation. Whenmotorcycle stopped, ʻ̒ --.-ʼ̓ is displayed. The indicated fuel consumption may differfrom the actual fuel consumption. The E type uses mile/l, except E type useskm/l or l/100 km.

Average Fuel Consumption MeterThe average fuel consumption after resetuntil that moment is indicated every 15seconds.The indicated fuel consumption may differfrom the actual fuel consumption.The E type uses mile/l, except E type useskm/l or l/100 km.

To reset the average fuel consumption (6),push and hold the SEL button (1) for morethan 2 seconds with the display in theaverage fuel consumption.

Average fuel consumption will reset if thebattery is disconnected.

Fuel Consumption Unit Change(Except E Type)The current/average fuel consumption meterdisplays either ʻʻkm/lʼʼ or ʻʻl/100 kmʼʼ.Push and hold the SEL button (1) for more than2 seconds to select with the display in thecurrent fuel consumption (5).

Mileage and Fuel Consumption UnitChange(E type only)The odometer/tripmeter can display ʻʻmileʼʼ orʻʻkmʼʼ.The fuel consumption meter can displayʻʻmile/lʼʼ or ʻʻkm/lʼʼ.

1. Turn the ignition switch ON.2. Press and hold the SET button for more

than 4 seconds.3. Press the SEL button to select ʻʻmileʼʼ/

ʻʻmile/l” or ʻʻkmʼʼ/ʻʻkm/lʼʼ.4. To end the selection, press the SET

button.

The display will stop blinking automatically ifthe button is not pressed for about 30seconds.As you turn off the ignition switch during thepresetting procedures, the preset data justbefore turning off the ignition switch will beregistered.

Digital ClockThe digital clock will show hours and minutesup to 12:59 with ʻʻAMʼʼ and ʻʻPMʼʼ. To adjust the time, proceed as follows:1. Turn the ignition switch ON.2. Push and hold both the SEL button (2)

and SET button (3) for more than 2seconds. The clock will be set in theadjust mode with the hour displayflashing.

3. To set the hour, push the SEL button untilthe desired hour and AM/PM aredisplayed.• The time is advanced by one hour,

each time the button is pushed.• The time advances fast when the

button is pushed and held.

4. Push the SET button. The minute displaywill start flashing.

5. To set the minute, push the SEL buttonuntil the desired minute. The minutedisplay will return to ʻʻ00ʼʼ when ʻʻ60ʼʼ isreached without affecting the hour display.

• The time advances by one minute, eachtime the button is pushed.

• The time advances fast when the button ispushed and held.

6. To end the adjustment, push the SETbutton or turn the ignition switch OFF. Thedisplay will stop flashing automatically andthe adjustment will be cancelled if thebutton is not pushed for about 30seconds.

The clock will be reset AM 1:00 if the batteryis disconnected.

SUSPENSIONRear SuspensionThe rear suspension can provide the desiredride under various rider/passenger weightand riding conditions through adjustments ofthe spring preload with the adjuster.

Spring preload:This model has the spring preload adjusteron the left side.The spring preload adjuster has 40 positionsfor different load or riding conditions.

To adjust the spring preload, turn theadjuster knob (1).

To reduce (LOW):Turn the adjuster counterclockwise towardLOW for a l ight load and smooth roadcondition.To increase (HIGH):Turn the adjuster clockwise toward HIGH fora firmer ride and rough road condition.

To adjust the adjuster to the standardposition, proceed as follows:1. Turn the spring preload adjuster knob (1)

The rear shock absorber assembly includesa damper unit that contains high pressurenitrogen gas. Do not attempt to disassembleor service the damper; it cannot be rebuiltand must be replaced when worn out.Disposal should only be done by your Hondadealer. The instructions found in this ownerʼsmanual are limited to adjustment of the shockassembly only.

BRAKESBoth the front and rear brakes are thehydraulic disc types.As the brake pads wear, the brake fluid leveldrops.There are no adjustments to perform, butfluid level and pad wear must be inspectedperiodically. The system must be inspectedfrequently to ensure there are no fluid leaks.If the control lever or pedal free travelbecomes excessive and the brake pads arenot worn beyond the recommended limit(page 119), there is probably air in the brakesystem and it must be bled. See your Hondadealer for this service.

Front Brake Fluid Level:With the motorcycle in an upright position,check the fluid level. It should be above theLOWER level mark (1). If the level is at orbelow the LOWER level mark, check thebrake pads for wear (page 119).

Worn pads should be replaced. If the padsare not worn, have your brake systeminspected for leaks.

The recommended brake fluid is Honda DOT4 brake fluid from a sealed container, or anequivalent.

Front Brake Lever:The distance between the tip of the brakelever (1) and the grip can be adjusted byturning the adjuster (2) while pushing thelever forward.Align the arrow (3) on the brake lever withthe index mark (4) on the adjuster.

Apply the brake several times and check forfree wheel rotation after the brake lever isreleased.

Other Checks:Make sure there are no fluid leaks. Check fordeterioration or cracks in the hoses andfittings.

Rear Brake Fluid Level:The reserve tank is located below the seat.Remove the seat (page 62).

With the motorcycle in an upright position,check the fluid level. It should be betweenthe UPPER (1) and LOWER (2) level marks.If the level is at or below the LOWER levelmark, check the rear brake pads for wear(page 120).

Worn pads should be replaced. If the padsare not worn, have your brake systeminspected for leaks.

The recommended brake fluid is Honda DOT4 brake fluid from a sealed container, or anequivalent.

CLUTCHClutch adjustment may be required if themotorcycle stalls when shifting into gear ortends to creep; or if the clutch slips, causingacceleration to lag behind engine speed.Minor adjustments can be made with theclutch cable adjuster (3) at the clutch lever (1).Normal clutch lever freeplay is:10 — 20 mm (0.4 - 0.8 in).

1. Loosen the lock nut (2) and turn the clutchcable adjuster. Tighten the lock nut andcheck the adjustment.

2. If the adjuster is threaded out near its limitor i f the correct freeplay cannot beobtained, loosen the lock nut and turn inthe clutch cable adjuster completely.Tighten the lock nut.

3. Loosen the lock nut (4) at the lower end ofthe cable. Turn the adjusting nut (5) toobtain the specified freeplay. Tighten the locknut and check the adjustment.

4. Start the engine, pull in the clutch leverand shift into gear. Make sure the enginedoes not stall and the motorcycle does notcreep. Gradually release the clutch leverand open the throttle. The motorcycleshould begin to move smoothly andaccelerate gradually.

If proper adjustment cannot be obtained orthe clutch does not work correctly, see yourHonda dealer.

Other Checks:Check the clutch cable for kinks or signs ofwear that could cause sticking or failure.Lubricate the clutch cable with a commerciallyavailable cable lubricant to prevent prematurewear and corrosion.

COOLANTCoolant RecommendationThe owner must properly maintain the coolantto prevent freezing, overheating, and corro-sion. Use only high quality ethylene glycolantifreeze containing corrosion protectioninhibitors specifically recommended for use inaluminum engines. (SEE ANTIFREEZE CON-TAINER LABEL).

Use only low-mineral drinking water ordistilled water as a part of the antifreezesolution. Water that is high in mineral contentor salt may be harmful to the aluminumengine.

Using coolant with silicate inhibitors maycause premature wear of water pump sealsor blockage of radiator passages.Using tap water may cause engine damage.

The factory provides a 50/50 solution ofantifreeze and disti l led water in thismotorcycle. This coolant solution isrecommended for most operatingtemperatures and provides good corrosionprotection. A higher concentration ofantifreeze decreases the cooling systemperformance and is recommended only whenadditional protection against freezing isneeded. A concentration of less than 40/60(40% antifreeze) will not provide propercorrosion protection. During freezingtemperatures, check the cooling systemfrequently and add higher concentrations ofantifreeze (up to a maximum of 60%antifreeze) if required.

InspectionThe reserve tank is behind the right middlefairing cover.Check the coolant level in the reserve tank(1) while the engine is at the normaloperating temperature with the motorcycle inan upright position. If the coolant level isbelow the LOWER level mark (2), remove theright middle fairing cover (page 68) and thereserve tank cap (3).Add coolant mixture until it reaches theUPPER level mark (4). Always add coolant tothe reserve tank.Do not attempt to add coolant by removing theradiator cap.

If the reserve tank is empty, or if coolant lossis excessive, check for leaks and see yourHonda dealer for repair.

Petrol Containing AlcoholIf you decide to use a petrol containing alcohol(gasohol), be sure its octane rating is at leastas high as that recommended by Honda.There are two types of “gasohol”: onecontaining ethanol, and the other containingmethanol. Do not use petrol that containsmore than 10% ethanol. Do not use petrolcontaining methanol (methyl or wood alcohol)that does not also contain cosolvents andcorrosion inhibitors for methanol. Never usepetrol containing more than 5% methanol,even if it has cosolvents and corrosioninhibitors.

The use of petrol containing more than 10% ethanol (or more than 5% methanol) may: • Damage the painting of the fuel tank. • Damage the rubber tubes of the fuel line. • Cause corrosion of the fuel tank. • Cause poor drivability.

Before buying fuel from an unfamiliar station,try to find out if the fuel contains alcohol. If itdoes, confirm the type and percentage ofalcohol used. If you notice any undesirableoperating symptoms while using a petrol thatcontains alcohol or one that you think containsalcohol switch to a petrol that you know doesnot contain alcohol.

ENGINE OILEngine Oil Level CheckCheck the engine oil level each day beforeriding the motorcycle.The level must be maintained between theupper (1) and lower (2) level marks on the oilfiller cap/dipstick (3).1. Start the engine and let it idle for 3-5

minutes. Make sure the low oil pressureindicator goes off. If the indicator lightremains on, stop the engine immediately.

2. Stop the engine and put the motorcycle onits center stand on level ground.

3. After 2-3 minutes, remove the oil fillercap/dipstick, wipe it clean, and reinsert theoil filler cap/dipstick without screwing it in.Remove the oil filler cap/ dipstick andinspect. The oil level should be betweenthe upper and lower level marks on the oilfiller cap/dipstick.

4. If required, add the specified oil (see page100) up to the upper level mark. Do notoverfill.

5. Reinstall the oil filler cap/dipstick. Checkfor oil leaks.

Running the engine with insufficient oilpressure may cause serious engine damage.

TUBELESS TYRESTo safely operate your motorcycle, your tyresmust be the proper type and size, in goodcondition with adequate tread, and correctlyinflated for the load you are carrying. Thefollowing pages give more detailedinformation on how and when to check yourair pressure, how to inspect your tyres fordamage, and what to do when your tyresneed to be repaired or replaced.

Air PressureKeeping your tyres properly inflated providesthe best combination of handling, tread lifeand riding comfort. Generally, under inflatedtyres wear unevenly, adversely affecthandling, and are more likely to fail frombeing overheated.Over inflated tyres make your motorcycle rideharshly, are more prone to damage fromroad hazards, and wear unevenly.

We recommend that you visually check yourtyres before every ride and use a gauge tomeasure air pressure at least once a monthor any time you think the tyres might be low.Tubeless tyres have some self-sealing abilityif they are punctured. However, becauseleakage is often very slow, you should lookclosely for punctures whenever a tyre is notfully inflated.

n WARNINGUsing tyres that are excessively worn orimproperly inflated can cause a crash inwhich you can be seriously hurt or killed.

Follow all instructions in this ownerʼs manualregarding tyre inflation and maintenance.

Always check air pressure when your tyresare “cold” - when the motorcycle has beenparked for at least three hours. If you checkair pressure when your tyres are “warm” -when the motorcycle has been ridden foreven a few miles - the readings will be higherthan if the tyres were “cold”. This is normal,so do not let air out of the tyres to match therecommended cold air pressures givenbelow. If you do, the tyres will be underinflated.

The recommended “cold” tyre pressures are:

InspectionWhenever you check the tyre pressures, youshould also examine the tyre treads andsidewalls for wear, damage, and foreignobjects:

Look for:• Bumps or bulges in the side of the tyre or

the tread. Replace the tyre if you find anybumps or bulges.

• Cuts, splits or cracks in the tyre. Replacethe tyre if you can see fabric or cord.

• Excessive tread wear.

Also, if you hit a pothole or hard object, pullto the side of the road as soon as you cansafely and carefully inspect the tyres fordamage.

Tyre RepairIf a tyre is punctured or damaged, you shouldreplace it, not repair it. As discussed below, atyre that is repaired, either temporarily orpermanently, will have lower speed andperformance limits than a new tyre.

A temporary repair, such as an externaltubeless tyre plug, may not be safe fornormal speeds and riding conditions. If atemporary or emergency repair is made to atyre, you should ride slowly and cautiously toa dealer and have the tyre replaced. Ifpossible, you should not carry a passengeror cargo until a new tyre is installed.

Even if a tyre is professionally repaired with apermanent internal patch plug, it will not beas good as a new tyre. You should notexceed 80 km/h (50 mph) for the first 24hours, or 130 km/h (80 mph) at any timethereafter. In addition, you may not be able tosafely carry as much weight as with a new tyre.Therefore, we strongly recommend that youreplace a damaged tyre. If you choose tohave a tyre repaired, be sure the wheel isbalanced before you ride.

If all keys are lost, the PGM-FI unit/ignitioncontrol module must be replaced. To avoidthis possibility we recommend that if only onekey is left, you immediately have itreproduced to ensure that a back-up isavailable.These keys contain electronic circuits thatare activated by the immobilizer system(HISS). They will not work to start the engine ifthe circuits are damaged.• Do not drop the keys or set heavy objects

on them.• Do not grind, drill or in any way alter the

original shape of the keys.• Keep the keys away from magnetic

objects.

IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM (HISS)HISS is the abbreviation of Honda IgnitionSecurity System.

The immobilizer system (HISS) protects yourmotorcycle from theft. A properly-coded keymust be used in the ignition switch for theengine to start. If an improperly-coded key(or other device) is used the engineʼs startingcircuit is disabled.

When the ignition switch is turned ON andthe engine stop switch is at “ ” (RUN), theimmobilizer system (HISS) indicator lights fora few seconds, then goes off. If the indicatorremains on, it means the system does notrecognize the coding of the key. Turn theignition switch to OFF, remove the key,reinsert and turn the switch ON again.

The immobilizer system has such a functionthat keeps the immobilizer system (HISS)indicator blinking at 2 second intervals for 24hours. This blinking function can be turnedon or off.

To alter the blinking function:1. Turn the ignition switch ON.2. Push and hold the SEL button (1) for more

than 2 seconds with the display in theodometer.The immobilizer system (HISS) indicator(2) will flash two times to indicate that thefunction has been cancelled.The immobilizer system (HISS) indicatorwill light for 2 seconds to indicate that thefunction has been operated.

3. Turn the ignition switch OFF and removethe key.

If the system repeatedly does not recognizethe coding of your key, contact your Hondadealer.• The system may not recognize the keyʼs

coding if any other immobilizer key is nearthe ignition switch. To make sure thesystem recognizes the key code, keepeach immobilizer key on a separate ring.

• Do not attempt to alter the immobilizersystem (HISS) or add other devices to it.Electrical problems could result, making itimpossible to start your motorcycle.

• If all keys are lost, the PGM-FI unit/ignitioncontrol module must be replaced.

RIGHT HANDLEBAR CONTROLS

Engine Stop Switch (1)The engine stop switch (1) is next to thethrottle grip. When the switch is in the

(RUN) pos i t ion , the eng ine w i l loperate. When the switch is in the (OFF) position, the engine will not operate.This switch is intended primarily as a safetyor emergency switch and should normallyremain in the (RUN) position.

If your motorcycle is stopped with theignition switch ON and the engine stopswitch (OFF), the headlight, positionlight, taillights and license light will stillbe on, resulting in battery discharge.

When the start button is pressed, the startermotor cranks the engine, the headlight willautomatically go out, but the taillights willstay on. If the engine stop switch is in the

Hazard Switch (3) This system should be used only when yourmotorcycle is stopped under emergency orhazardous conditions. To turn it on, turn theignition key to the ON position, and then slidethe switch marked . The front and rear turnsignals will blink simultaneously.

All of the turn signals can blink without theignition key.To operate this function, proceed as follows:1. Turn the ignition key to ON position and

then slide the hazard switch to the markedposition.

2. All of the turn signals will keep blinking evenafter you turn the ignition key to OFF position.

3. You can turn off the turn blinking signals bysliding the hazard switch back to the offposition.If the switch is left in the off position formore than two seconds, and then movedback to the position again, the turnsignals will not be on.

Be sure to turn the switch off when the hazardwarning is no longer required, or the turnsignals will not work properly, and mayconfuse other drivers.

If all the turn signals are left blinking with theengine stopped, the battery will be discharged.

SADDLEBAGSThe saddlebags (1) are for lightweight items.Do not carry more than 5.0 kg (11.0 lb) ineach saddlebag.The right and left saddlebags can beoperated in the same manner.

To Open the Saddlebags:1. Insert the ignition key (2) and turn it

clockwise.2. Release the lock by pulling the lever (3)

up and open the saddlebag cover (4).

When try to open the cover, be careful, thecover could fall down suddenly. Follow thecover movement with the hand.

To Close the Saddlebags:1. Close the saddlebag cover pushing on

2. Turn the ignition key counterclockwise.

After closing the saddlebag cover, check that itis locked securely. The cover may not be locked securely whenthe key cannot be returned smoothly. STARTING THE ENGINEAlways follow the proper starting proceduredescribed below.

This motorcycle is equipped with a side standignition cut-off system. The engine cannot bestarted if the side stand is down, unless thetransmission is in neutral. If the side stand isup, the engine can be started in neutral or ingear with the clutch lever pulled in. Afterstarting with the side stand down, the enginewill shut off if the transmission is put in gearbefore raising the side stand.

To protect the catalytic converter in yourmotorcycleʼs exhaust system, avoidextending idling and the use of leaded petrol.

Your motorcycleʼs exhaust containspoisonous carbon monoxide gas. High levelsof carbon monoxide can collect rapidly inenclosed areas such as a garage.Do not run the engine with the garage doorclosed. Even with the door open, run theengine only long enough to move yourmotorcycle out of the garage.

Do not use the electric starter for more than 5seconds at a time. Release the start buttonfor approximately 10 seconds beforepressing it again.

PreparationBefore starting, insert the key, turn the ignitionswitch ON and confirm the following:• The immobilizer system (HISS) indicator is

OFF.• The transmission is in neutral

(neutral indicator is ON).• The engine stop switch is at (RUN).• The low oil pressure indicator is ON.• The PGM-FI malfunction indicator lamp

(MIL) is OFF.• The ABS indicator light is ON. (NT700VA).

The low oil pressure indicator should go off afew seconds after the engine starts. If the lowoil pressure indicator lights during operation,stop the engine immediately and check theengine oil level.

Operating the engine with insufficient oilpressure can cause serious engine damage.

Starting ProcedureThis motorcycle has a fuel-injected enginewith an automatic choke. Follow the procedureindicated below.

Any Air Temperature1. With the throttle completely closed, press

the start button.

The engine will not start if the throttle is fullyopen (because the electronic control modulecuts off the fuel supply).

Snapping the throttle or fast idling for morethan about 5 minutes at normal airtemperature may cause exhaust pipediscoloration.

Flooded EngineIf the engine fails to start after repeatedattempts, it may be flooded.1. Leave the engine stop switch set to

(RUN).2. Open throttle fully.3. Press the start button for 5 seconds.4. Follow the normal starting procedure.

If the engine starts with unstable idle, openthe throttle slightly. If the engine does not start, wait for 10seconds, then follow steps 1-4 again.

Ignition Cut OffYour motorcycle is designed to automaticallystop the engine and fuel pump if themotorcycle is over-turned (a banking sensorcuts off the ignition system). Before restartingthe engine, you must turn the ignition switchto the OFF position and then back to ON.

Make sure you understand the function of theside stand mechanism. (See MAINTENANCESCHEDULE on page 94 and explanation forSIDE STAND on page 111).

Make sure flammable materials such as drygrass or leaves do not come in contact withthe exhaust system when riding, idling, orparking your motorcycle.

1. After the engine has been warmed up, themotorcycle is ready for riding.

2. While the engine is idling, pull in the clutchlever and depress the shift lever to shift into1st (low) gear.

3. Slowly release the clutch lever and at the sametime gradually increase engine speed byopening the throttle. Coordination of thethrottle and clutch lever will assure asmooth positive start.

4. When the motorcycle attains a moderatespeed, close the throttle, pull in the clutchlever and shift to 2nd gear by raising the shiftlever.This sequence is repeated to progressivelyshift to 3rd, 4th and 5th (top) gears.

5. Coordinate the throttle and brakes forsmooth deceleration.

6. Both front and rear brakes should be usedat the same time and should not be appliedstrongly enough to lock the wheel, orbraking effectiveness will be reduced andcontrol of the motorcycle be difficult.

BRAKINGThis motorcycle is equipped with a newbraking system. Operating the front brakelever applies the front brake. Depressing therear brake pedal applies the rear brake and aportion of the front brake. For full brakingeffectiveness, use both the lever and pedalsimultaneously, as you would with aconventional motorcycle braking system.

As with a conventional motorcycle brakingsystem, excessively hard application of thebrake controls may cause wheel lock,reducing control of the motorcycle.

For normal braking, apply both the brakepedal and lever while down-shifting to matchyour road speed. For maximum braking,close the throttle and firmly apply the pedaland lever; pull in the clutch lever beforecoming to a complete stop to prevent stallingthe engine.

Important Safety Reminders:• When possible, reduce speed or brake

before entering a turn; closing the throttleor braking in mid-turn may cause wheelslip. Wheel slip will reduce control of themotorcycle.

• When riding in wet or rainy conditions, oron loose surfaces, the ability to maneuverand stop wil l be reduced. All of youractions should be smooth under theseconditions. Rapid acceleration, braking orturning may cause loss of control. For yoursafety, exercise extreme caution whenbraking, accelerating or turning.

• When descending a long, steep grade, useengine compression braking by down-shifting, with intermittent use of bothbrakes. Continuous brake application can overheatthe brakes and reduce their effectiveness.

• Riding with your foot resting on the brakepedal or your hand on the brake lever mayactuate the brakelight, giving a falseindication to other drivers. It may alsooverheat the brakes, reducingeffectiveness.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)(NT700VA)This model is also equipped with an Anti-lockBrake System (ABS) designed to helpprevent wheel lock up during hard braking onuneven or other poor surfaces while runningstraight. Although the wheel may not lock up- if you are braking too hard in a turn themotorcycle can still lose traction, causing aloss of control.

In some situations, a motorcycle with ABSmay require a longer stopping distance tostop on loose or uneven surfaces than anequivalent motorcycle without ABS.

ABS cannot make up for road conditions, badjudgment, or improper operation of thebrakes. It is still your responsibility to ride atreasonable speeds for weather, road surface,and traffic conditions, and to leave a marginof safety.

ABS is self-checking and always on.

• ABS may be activated by riding over asharp drop or rise in the road level. It is important to follow the tyre reco-mmendations (page 50). The ABScomputer works by comparing wheelspeed. Non-recommended tyres can affectwheel speed and may confuse the ABScomputer.

• ABS does not function at low speeds(approximately 10 km/h (6 mph) or below).

• ABS does not function if the battery isdischarged.

ABS Indicator Light(NT700VA)Normally, this light comes on when theignition is turned ON, and goes off after youride the motorcycle at speed above 10 km/h(6 mph). If there is an ABS problem, theindicator light flashes and remains on. TheABS system does not operate when the ABSindicator light is on.

If the ABS indicator light comes on whileriding, stop the motorcycle in a safe placeand turn off the engine. Turn the ignition ON again. The light shouldcome on, and go off after you ride themotorcycle at speeds above 10 km/h (6mph). If i t does not go off, ABS is notfunctioning, but the brakes still work theCombined Brake System and provide normalstopping ability. However, you should havethe system checked by Honda dealer assoon as possible.

The ABS indicator light may flash if you turnthe rear wheel while the motorcycle is uprighton the stand. This is normal. Turn the ignitionOFF, then turn it ON. The indicator shouldcome on, then go off after you run themotorcycle above 30 km/h (19 mph).

PARKING1. After stopping the motorcycle, shift the

transmission into neutral, turn thehandlebar fully to the left, turn the ignitionswitch OFF and remove the key.

2. Use the side or center stand to supportthe motorcycle while parked.

Park the motorcycle on firm, level ground toprevent it from falling over.If you must park on a slight incline, aim thefront of the motorcycle uphill to reduce thepossibility of rolling off the side stand oroverturning.

3. Lock the steering to help prevent theft(page 61).

Make sure flammable materials such as drygrass or leaves do not come in contact withthe exhaust system when parking yourmotorcycle.

ANTI-THEFT TIPS1. Always lock the steering and never leave

the key in the ignition switch. This soundssimple but people do forget.

2. Be sure the registration information for yourmotorcycle is accurate and current.

3. Park your motorcycle in a locked garagewhenever possible.

4. Use an additional anti-theft device of goodquality.

5. Put your name, address, and phonenumber in this Ownerʼs Manual and keep iton your motorcycles at all times.Many times stolen motorcycles areidentified by information in the OwnerʼsManuals that are still with them.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS• Make sure the engine is off before you

begin any maintenance or repairs. This willhelp eliminate several potential hazards:• Carbon monoxide poisoning from

engine exhaust.Be sure there is adequate ventilationwhenever you operate the engine.

Viscosity:Viscosity grade of engine oil should be basedon average atmospheric temperature in yourriding area. The following provides a guide tothe selection of the proper grade or viscosityof oil to be used at various atmospherictemperatures.

JASO T 903 standardThe JASO T 903 standard is an index forengine oils for 4-stroke motorcycle engines.There are two classes: MA and MB. Oil conforming to the standard is labeled onthe oil container. For example, the followinglabel shows the MA classification.

Engine Oil and FilterEngine oil quality is the chief factor affectingengine service life. Change the engine oil asspecified in the maintenance schedule (page93).When running in very dusty conditions, oilchanges should be performed morefrequently than specified in the maintenanceschedule.

Please dispose of used engine oil in amanner that is compatible with theenvironment. We suggest you take it in asealed container to your local recyclingcenter or service station for reclamation. Donot throw it in the trash or pour it on theground or down a drain.

Used engine oil may cause skin cancer ifrepeatedly left in contact with the skin forprolonged periods. Although this is unlikelyunless you handle used oil on a daily basis, itis still advisable to thoroughly wash your

hands with soap and water as soon aspossible after handling used oil.Changing the oil filter requires a special oilfilter tool and a torque wrench. If you do nothave these tools and the necessary skill, werecommend that you have your Honda dealerperform this service.

If a torque wrench is not used for thisinstallation, see your Honda dealer as soonas possible to verify proper assembly.

Change the engine oil with the engine atnormal operating temperature and themotorcycle on its side stand to assurecomplete and rapid draining.

4. Using a special tool and a torque wrench,install the new oil filter and tighten to atorque of:

5. Check that the sealing washer on thedrain plug is in good condition and installthe plug. Replace the sealing washerevery other time the oil is changed, oreach time if necessary.Engine oil drain plug torque:

Front Wheel Installation1. Install the side collars into the left and

right side wheel hub.Position the front wheel between the forklegs and insert the front axle shaft fromthe left side, through the left fork leg andwheel hub.

Rear Wheel Installation• Reverse the removal procedure to install

the wheel.• When installing the brake caliper bracket,

be carefull not to damage the sensor andpulser ring (NT700VA).

• Before installing the rear wheel, check thatthe wheel hub and final drive gear splinesare coated with grease.

• Be sure the splines on the wheel hub fitinto the final gear case.

• Before installing the muffler, replace themuffler gasket with a new gasket.

Clean your motorcycle regularly to protect thesurface finishes and inspect for damage,wear, and oil, coolant or brake fluid leakage.

Avoid cleaning products that are notspecifically designed for motorcycle orautomobile surfaces.They may contain harsh detergents orchemical solvents that could damage themetal, paint, and plastic on your motorcycle.

If your motorcycle is still warm from recentoperation, give the engine and exhaustsystem time to cool off.

We recommend avoiding the use of highpressure water spray (typical in coin-operated car washes).

High pressure water (or air) can damagecertain parts of the motorcycle.

Washing the motorcycle1. Rinse the motorcycle thoroughly with cool

water to remove loose dirt.2. Clean the motorcycle with a sponge or

soft cloth using cool water.Avoid directing water to muffler outletsand electrical parts.

3. Clean the fairing, headlight lens and otherplastic parts using a cloth or spongedampened with a solution of milddetergent and water. Rub the soiled areagently rinsing it frequently with freshwater. The rear grab rail is also a plastic part andcan be cleaned in the same manner asdescribed above.Take care to keep brake fluid or chemicalsolvents off the motorcycle.They will damage the plastic and paintedsurfaces.

The inside of the headlight lens may beclouded immediately after washing themotorcycle. Moisture condensation inside theheadlight lens will disappear gradually bylighting the headlight in high beam. Run theengine while keeping the headlight on.

4. After cleaning, rinse the motorcyclethoroughly with plenty of clean water.Strong detergent residue can corrodealloy parts.

5. Dry the motorcycle, start the engine, andlet it run for several minutes.

6. Test the brakes before riding themotorcycle. Several applications may benecessary to restore normal brakingperformance.

Braking eff iciency may be temporari lyimpaired immediately after washing themotorcycle.Anticipate longer stopping distance to avoid apossible accident.

Finishing TouchesAfter washing your motorcycle, considerusing a commercially-available spraycleaner/polish or quality liquid or paste waxto finish the job. Use only a non-abrasivepolish or wax made specif ically formotorcycles or automobiles. Apply the polishor wax according to the instructions on thecontainer.

Removing Road SaltRoad Salt used on roads during winter andsalt from seawater causes rust.After riding on these conditions:Wash your motorcycle as follows after it hasrun through salty water or on roads treatedwith Road Salt.

1. Clean the motorcycle using cool water(page 133).

Do not use warm water.This worsens the effect of the salt.

2. Dry the motorcycle and make sure themetal is protected with the wax.

Painted Aluminum Wheel MaintenanceAluminum may corrode from contact with dirt,mud, or road salt. Clean the wheels afterriding through any of these substances. Use awet sponge and mild detergent. Avoid stiffbrushes, steel wool, or cleaners containingabrasives or chemical compounds.

After washing, rinse with plenty of water anddry with a clean cloth.

Exhaust Pipe And Muffler MaintenanceThe exhaust pipe and muffler is stainless steelbut may become stained by mud or dust.

To remove mud or dust, use a wet spongeand a liquid kitchen abrasive, then rinse wellwith clean water. Dry with chamois or a softtowel.If necessary, remove heat stains by using acommercially available fine texture compound.Then rinse by the same manner as removingmud or dust.

Clean the WindscreenUsing plenty of water, clean the windscreenwith a soft cloth or sponge. (Avoid usingdetergents or any kind of chemical cleaneron the windscreen). Dry with a soft, cleancloth.

To avoid possible scratching or otherdamage, use only water and a soft cloth orsponge to clean the windscreen.

For a dirtier windscreen, use a diluted neutraldetergent with a sponge and plenty of water.Make sure to wash off all the detergent.(Detergent residue may cause windscreencracks).

Replace the windscreen if scratches cannotbe removed and they obstruct clear vision.

Take care to keep battery electrolyte, brakefluid or other chemical solvents off thewindscreen and screen garnish. They willdamage the plastic.

Extended storage, such as for winter,requires that you take certain steps to reducethe effects of deterioration from non-use ofthe motorcycle. In addition, necessary repairsshould be made BEFORE storing themotorcycle; otherwise, these repairs may beforgotten by the time the motorcycle isremoved from storage.

STORAGE1. Change the engine oil and filter.2. Make sure the cooling system is filled with

a 50/50% antifreeze solution.3. Empty the fuel tank into an approved

petrol container using a commerciallyavailable hand siphon or an equivalentmethod. Spray the inside of the tank withan aerosol rust-inhibiting oil.Reinstall the fuel fill cap on the tank.

STORAGE GUIDEn WARNING

Petrol is highly flammable and explosive.You can be burned or seriously injured whenhandling fuel.

• Stop the engine and keep heat, sparks,and flame away.

• Refuel only outdoors.• Wipe up spills immediately.

4. To prevent rusting in the cylinders,perform the following:• Remove the spark plug caps from the

spark plugs. Using tape or string, securethe caps to any convenient plastic bodypart so that they are positioned awayfrom the spark plugs.

• Remove the spark plugs from the engineand store them in a safe place.Do not connect the spark plugs to thespark plug caps.

• Pour a tablespoon (15-20 cm3) of cleanengine oil into each cylinder and coverthe spark plug holes with a piece ofcloth.

• Crank the engine several times todistribute the oil.

• Reinstall the spark plugs and spark plugcaps.

5. Remove the battery. Store in an areaprotected from freezing temperatures anddirect sunlight.Slow charge the battery once a month.

6. Wash and dry the motorcycle. Wax allpainted surfaces. Coat chrome with rustinhibiting oil.

7. Inflate the tyres to their recommendedpressures. Place the motorcycle on blocksto raise both tyres off the ground.

8. Cover the motorcycle (donʼt use plastic orother coated materials) and store in anunheated area, free of dampness with aminimum of daily temperature variation.Do not store the motorcycle in directsunlight.

REMOVAL FROM STORAGE1. Uncover and clean the motorcycle.2. Change the engine oil if more than 4

months have passed since the start ofstorage.

3. Charge the battery as required. Install thebattery.

4. Drain any excess aerosol rust-inhibiting oilfrom the fuel tank. Fill the fuel tank withfresh petrol.

5. Check the final drive oil, adding therecommended gear oil if necessary.Change the final drive oil as specified bythe Maintenance Schedule.

6. Perform all Pre-ride Inspection checks(page 75).Test ride the motorcycle at low speeds ina safe riding area away from traffic.

IF YOU CRASHPersonal safety is your first priority after acrash. If you or anyone else has been injured,take time to assess the severity of the injuriesand whether it is safe to continue riding. Callfor emergency assistance if needed. Alsofollow applicable laws and regulations ifanother person or vehicle is involved in thecrash or if a third partyʼs property damage isoccurred.

If you decide that you are capable of ridingsafely, first evaluate the condition of yourmotorcycle. If the engine is still running, turn itoff and look it over carefully; inspect it for fluidleaks, check the tightness of critical nuts andbolts, and secure such parts as the handlebar,control levers, brakes, and wheels.

If there is minor damage, or you are unsureabout possible damage, ride slowly andcautiously. Sometimes, crash damage ishidden or not immediately apparent, so youshould have your motorcycle thoroughlychecked at a qualified service facility as soonas possible. Also, be sure to have your Hondadealer check the frame and suspension afterany serious crash.

This motorcycle is equipped with a catalyticconverter.The catalytic converter contains preciousmetals that serve as catalysts, promotingchemical reactions to convert the exhaustgasses without affecting the metals.The catalytic converter acts on HC, CO, andNOx. A replacement unit must be an originalHonda part or its equivalent.

The catalytic converter must operate at ahigh temperature for the chemical reactionsto take place. It can set on f ire anycombustible materials that come near it. Parkyour motorcycle away from high grases, dryleaves, or other flammables.

A defective catalytic converter contributes toair pollution, and can impair your engineʼsperformance. Follow these guidelines toprotect your motorcycleʼs catalytic converter.

• Always use unleaded petrol. Even a smallamount of leaded petrol can contaminatethe catalyst metals, making the catalyticconverter ineffective.

• Keep the engine in good running condition.A poorly running engine can cause thecatalytic converter to overheat causingdamage to the converter or the motorcycle.

• If your engine is misfiring, backfiring,stalling, or otherwise not running properly,stop riding and turn off the engine. Haveyour motorcycle serviced as soon aspossible.
