NSW POLICE BAND …on the beat since 1895! ‐ September 2009 ‐ At the Wall of Remembrance 2008 National Police Remembrance Day was introduced in 1989 by all Police Commissioners of Australia to honour those police officers who have been killed in the execution of their duty. The date of September 29 was chosen to coincide with the Feast Day of St Michael, Archangel and Patron Saint of Police. In total 731 police are remembered on the National Memorial in Canberra. The NSW Police Band travelled to Canberra and participated in the dedication of the National Police Memorial on September 29, 2006. The NSW Police Memorial in the Domain honours all police officers who have served the people of New South Wales and the memory of those who lost their lives in the course of duty. Since the establishment of the NSW Police in 1862, 234 police officers have died doing their job. Their names are etched in the Memorial's largest wall and will be joined by the names of officers who give their lives in the future. The Police Band continues to play an important part on Police Remembrance Day by accompanying the marching contingent, providing ceremonial music, welcoming dignitaries such as the Governor and playing the National Anthem. Musical Moments in September

Elsen is the youngest member of the Police Band at only 20 years of age. He grew up in the country music capital, Tamworth, moving to Sydney after school to study at the Australian Institute of Music. He joined the band in July 2008. Why did you join the Police Band? I was looking for a job which allowed me to play different styles / genres. Why double bass? My first violin teacher told me I should play double bass as there were no double bass players at the Tamworth Conservatorium. Favourite musical style? Korean Hardcore. Any hobbies? Jammin’ What has been your most rewarding experience in the Police Band? Being able to play bass every day for a living.

On September 28, 1989 The NSW Police Band performed at the Tickertape Parade through the streets of Sydney for the Australian Cricket Team - they had just claimed back the Ashes.
