The NSW HSC

• The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is the highest educational award you can gain in New South Wales schools.

• The HSC: is an internationally recognised credential provides a strong foundation for the future is standards-based. Students receive HSC marks

that indicate the standard they have achieved.

Types of Courses

• Board Developed Courses Have HSC exams (except for Life Skills) May contribute to the ATAR (Australian Tertiary

HSC Course Structure

All courses in the HSC have a unit value

• Most courses are 2 Units2 Units

• 2 Units =120 hours per year

• 2 Units = 100 marks in the HSC exam

• 1 Unit = 60 hours; 50 marks in HSC exam

Requirements for the HSC - 1

• Preliminary Course Minimum of 12 units

• HSC Course Minimum of 10 units Students must satisfactorily complete the

Preliminary course before they are eligible to commence the corresponding HSC course

Requirements for the HSC - 2

• Both Preliminary and HSC Courses must include: 6 units from Board Developed Courses 2 units of English 3 courses of 2 units or greater at least 4 subjects

At most six units of courses in science can count towards HSC eligibility.

HSC: All My Own Work

• HSC: All My Own Work: is a program designed to help HSC students

follow the principles and practices of good scholarship

includes understanding and valuing of ethical practices when locating and using information as part of HSC studies.

• All students must complete HSC: All My Own Work or its equivalent before they can be entered for any Preliminary or HSC course.

Satisfactory Completion of a Course

• Students must: follow the course developed or endorsed by the

Board apply themselves with diligence and sustained

effort achieve some or all of the course outcomes complete work placement for VET courses make a genuine attempt at assessment tasks that

total more than 50% of the available school assessment marks for that course.

Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)

• In 2009, the Universities Admissions Index (UAI) changed to the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

• The maximum ATAR will be 99.95 (as opposed to a maximum UAI of 100).

• Achieving an ATAR of 99.95 is the same as achieving a UAI of 100.

• Rules for the ATAR are the same as for the UAI. There will be no changes to: scaling process, rank order of students, student

selection for university courses.

• Completion of at least 10 units of Board Developed Courses including at least: eight units from Category A courses (no more

than two units of Category B courses) two units of English three Board Developed courses of two units or
