BULLETIN
Issue 804 .
Next Meeting Wednesday 7th August the Dougherty Community Centre, 7 Victor St, Chatswood. The main meeting commencing at 8.00pm, and the culture class starting at 7.30pm. Culture Class and Guest Speaker. Our guest speakers this month are Marie and John Bartlett. They will be conducting both the culture class and the main talk after our supper break. Marie and John live on the Central Coast and are serious growers of Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums. Tonight’s talk and slide show will be on growing Phragmipediums, which they do exceptionally well. They will talk on the conditions that they grow theirs in, the type of mix, fertilizers, watering and all aspects of growing them. There will be some invaluable advice so I suggest you take notes. Supper Roster Thanks to this month’s helpers Ela Kielich, Lanny Pramana and Susie Butler, and remember if you like to have something with your coffee why not bring a plate of nibbles along.

DATES TO PUT IN YOUR DIARY North Shore’s dates St Ives Orchid Fair 16th -18th August 9am to 4 pm Fri & Sat, 9am - 3pm Sun; The best Orchid Fair in Sydney, and we need your help. As one of the societies that runs this Fair we need your plants for the display, your spare flowering plants for the sales bench, and your help for security, selling of raffle tickets and generally helping where needed. There will be more information next month for newer members but as this is the 20th year of the Fair most members know how much help we need and how it helps our society. This provides us with the finances for our Christmas party and our annual point score prizes. Spring Show at the St Ives Village Shopping Centre, Mona Vale Rd, St Ives The set-up is on Thursday evening 5th September with the show being open on Friday 6th to Sunday 8th September; pull down will be at 3pm on Sunday 8th at 3.00pm Other dates National Orchid Extravaganza 9th – 11th August Fri & Sat 9-4pm & Sun 12-4pm, 1 Pellitt Lane at Round Corner, Dural; local and interstate vendors and displays of orchids. There is plenty of free parking with a small entrance fee to the Fair. Southern Orchid Spectacular 11th – 13th October Fri & Sat 9.30-4pm & Sun 9.30-2pm. Note it is being held at a new venue, SUTHERLAND BASKETBALL STADIUM, in the Waratah Park Reserve, Old Princes Highway, Sutherland. This will be your last chance this year to buy a few more orchids and any unusual supplies that you need.
Thank you to helpers This year as a way of saying thank you to the members who help out at the shows, each volunteer will have their name put in a special raffle with one entry for each show which they helped at. The raffle will be drawn at the North Shore Christmas meeting with two members winning a prize. As we still have one more show to go this year putting your name on the roster to help will give you a chance to win. Committee members will not be included in the draw.
Selling Australian Orchids at our shows Just a reminder that any member wanting to sell Australian Native orchids both species and hybrids at the St Ives Orchid
Fair must have an accompanying list of their plants and when they see Allan Cushway to add them to the sales table they will be given the tags issued by National Parks and Wildlife to put on their plants. If you do not have a list your plants cannot be sold. Members are also reminded that they cannot bring sales plants into the sales hall for the St Ives Orchid Fair until Friday morning as there will be no where to store them on the Thursday night due to the lack of storage there and also the committee uses that area to feed the judges on the Thursday night. We know this creates a problem but there is no way around it at present. Definition of Class 19 Miniature Species Flower less than 12mm and the distance between the first and last flower is less than 200mm. This is just to clarify what is a Miniature species and not just a small orchid
