Mara & Ben Cella celebrated the birth of their son, Rory Logan Cella, Refuel Lev, on October 16, 2014. His brit milah ceremony took place at NSJC. Rory is welcomed by big brother, Jackson, along with proud grandparents, Margie & Ray Cella, and aunt, Jessica Cella, all of whom are NSJC congregants.
NSJC Sisterhood is proud to honor Anne Avni as its Woman of Achievement. Anne will be celebrated at the Woman’s League of Conservative Judaism BQLI Regional Conference Awards Dinner, to be held on June 3rd at Temple Israel in Great Neck.
In recognition of his 35 years of service as its Educational Director, Temple Isaiah held a ceremony on October 24th, naming their Religious School in honor of NSJC congregant, Rabbi Harvey Witman.
Sheri & Eric Potash celebrated the engagement of their son, Adam to Nicole Supovitz. Nicole is the daughter of Dianne & Alan Supovitz of East Setauket.
Margie & Ray Cella and Hilary & David Kramer will celebrate the marriage of their children, Jessica Cella and Cantor Daniel Kramer on December 28, 2014. Cantor Daniel’s aufruf will take place at NSJC on December 27, 2014.
Teen Program at NSJC!
Robin Appel has been instrumental in making our annual film series a tremendous success. In addition, she serves as an Honors Gabbai. We appreciate the enthusiasm and devotion Robin gives to our congregation.
Barbara Lusman and Joe Muntner conducted a very successful Giant Garage Sale at NSJC in November. Running the sale was a tremendous labor of effort and love for the welfare of our congregation and community, and we extend a hearty todah rabah.

Notice to coNgregatioN: ProPosal for allowiNg gift certificates from restauraNts without
hechshers to Be iNcluded as Prizes at fuNdraisers
In response to requests to allow gift certificates from restaurants without kosher supervision to be used as “free-choice” prizes at synagogue fundraisers (that is to say, in a situation in which a person who did not want to win such a certificate or bid on it would not be compelled to do so in any way), the following guidelines are proposed to be tested at the Gatsby Night program this year:
1. First, the underlying premise for allowing such prizes is that according to the rulings of Conservative Judaism (and in a very limited sense, in the eyes of all of Judaism) one can respect the laws of kashrut and still eat in a restaurant that did not have kosher supervision. And related to this, given our location and the number of supervised kosher restaurants in the area, we believe it important to foster a commitment to kashrut with an appreciation for the realities of our environment. 2. Gift certificates from such places would be “general use” at the donating restaurant, not for a specific food or dish from the given restaurant.
3. Such donations would only be auctioned/raffled/offered in situations in which an event attendee had to actively choose to be eligible to win such an item. It could not be a prize that anyone could receive (i.e. as a door-prize or grand-prize). 4. Discreet signs will be displayed indicating that the synagogue does not in any way claim that all food served in such restaurants would be kosher, only that an individual might be comfortable making choices in keeping with his or her understanding of kashrut and eat there (wording to be determined). 5. Under no circumstances will advertising in any format in any way from such restaurants be allowed other than by way of their offering such a gift certificate/raffle item. 6. Under no circumstances will food from such a restaurant ever be allowed in the synagogue. 7. Under no circumstances will a synagogue event ever happen at such a restaurant. 8. It is proposed that this policy only be implemented for “community-wide” fundraisers. That at “in-house” events (for one of the auxiliary arms of the synagogue or a Hebrew School event), that we retain a higher standard and exclude the possibility of offering such a prize.
We will implement this policy this year at the Gatsby Night event in February of 2015 and judge the congregation’s reaction prior to deciding whether or not to make this the set policy at the synagogue and/or whether or not to make any changes to it. In an effort to encourage a deeper and broader understanding and commitment to Judaism, I taught a class about Kashrut during Friday night services in November as a part of my “Why I Do What I Do” series. Your feedback about this “experiment” will be greatly appreciated.
Patrons of Prominent Speakers is NSJC’s solution to the problem of how to continue to serve the Jewish community in several ways. We want to provide our congregants and community with the opportunity to hear and to meet with interesting, engaging experts. Speakers, particularly good speakers, can be expensive. How can we bring in quality speakers to NSJC without taxing everyone an admission fee? How much can we charge to cover the costs of quality speakers? Some of our members have stepped up to help defray or cover the cost of speakers. These are our Patrons of Prominent Speakers. To date we have had three outstanding speakers, noted persons in their areas of expertise. We have opened the presentations to the community; our program attendance has risen from 55 to 75 to 110. All our reviews have been positive and each time, our audiences were assured of a successful, quality evening. We will continue our POPS program with the support of gracious
and generous congregants. We will continue to make every effort to present the best we can find and can afford. We hope to do this without admission fee. Through the efforts of a congregant, last month a person of international renown became available. The topic was timely, pertinent and relevant to the Jewish community. We were able to attract this speaker because we have had successful programs and because we had the financial resources. After this presenter however, we have no more funds. Our POPS program may have to “close our doors.” It is through the efforts of generous members that the program has been self-supporting until now. Consider becoming a patron at a cost of $136. Consider encouraging your friends to become patrons too. And consider sponsoring a speaker. Thank you! Norman Korowitz

December Religious School Calendar
Our Madrichim program (classroom assistants or student aides) is open to 8 - 12th graders who attended NSJC Religious School. Madrichim can volunteer on Sunday mornings from 9 am - Noon and/or on Wednesday afternoons from 4 pm - 6 pm.
We welcome any teenager who would like to participate, however, each volunteer must attend two to three training sessions, for two hours per session. Dates will be selected in consultation with participants.

tz During chol hamoed Sukkot, Sunday morning, October 12th, volunteers from Hobbs Farm, JWOW, NSJC, Temple Isaiah and members of a Stony Brook University fraternity participated in our annual Sukkot Harvest Festival at the farm. Rabbi Benson directed our hands-on experience shaking the lulav and etrog, and shared holiday stories, customs and songs. After enjoying snacks and creating holiday arts and crafts, eggplants, peppers, kale, swiss chard and tomatoes were harvested from our NSJC and JWOW beds and from the farm fields. As a result of our efforts, 100 pounds of food were gathered for distribution to local food pantries and soup kitchens.
