Merritt’s “Words” are brief and to the point. I think we should heed them. Spring has certainly sprung, and the usual collection of Mother Nature’s horrors has once more intruded into our consciousness. Weeds, ants, wasps etc etc are once more blighting our once-tranquil lives. And now it is gar-dening time. I saw a picture containing a T-shirt the other day. On the shirt it said “Sod the Garden.” Good idea, except the sodding grass is growing at a most alarming rate. Anyway, I have washed and waxed the editorial XJR, Leatherique-ed the seats, and done a couple of minor repairs. Just need some tires, and we will be off! We plan to participate in as many of the car events of the summer as we can. Unfortunately we will have to miss a few, as belonging to a number of car clubs always means conflicts. But we will not be able to participate forever, and recent health issues in our house have brought the subject of mortality forward in our minds. This summer is almost here, so if I might, I suggest you enjoy it! How many more summers have you got?

ou’ve probably been there. You are wrestling with a rusted-on nut or bolt, the wrench slips, you bash your

hand, blood appears. “Oh, dear. I hurt my poor hand when my silly wrench slipped as I was trying to loosen this wretched rusted-on nut,” you say, or words to that general effect. So the info below might be useful: In the April 2007 issue of “Machinist’s Workshop” maga-zine was published information on various penetrating oils. The magazine reports they tested these products for “break out torque” on rusted nuts and bolts. A subjective test was made of popular penetrating oils, with the unit of merit being the torque required to remove the nut from a “scientifically rusted” bolt. Average torque load to loosen nut: No oil used ………………… 516 foot pounds WD-40 ………………… ……..238 foot pounds PB Blaster …………………….214 foot pounds Liquid Wrench ……………… 127 foot pounds Kano Kroil ……………………. 106 foot pounds ATF/Acetone mix……………… 53 foot pounds The ATF/Acetone mix is a “home brew” mix of 50/50 au-tomatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note this “home brew” released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test. “Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with equally good results.” Note also that Liquid Wrench is almost as good as Kroil for 20% of the price. ATF/Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a 50/50 mix. (ATF = any type of

Automatic Transmission Fluid). (This article is from Jaguar Jottings, the newsletter of the Ottawa Jaguar Club. The source is

P robably due to JLR’s push for world domination, the Internet is abuzz with rumour, speculation, soothsaying, etc. Here is a bit of that:

Motor Trend has got wind of a certain Jaguar F-Type SVR that will emerge from the company’s recently an-nounced (2014) Special Vehicle Operations division. This car supposedly will be powered by the same super-charged five litre V8 as the R model, but upgraded to pro-duce over 600 HP. Motor Trend also has words about some other of Jaguar’s plans for the future: The new XE is slated to arrive in North American show-rooms in spring, 2016. The base engine will probably be the gasoline-fuelled two litre Ingenium engine, with an optional three litre supercharged V6 producing 340 HP and 322 lbs-ft of torque being offered. This should be good for a 0-100 KPH acceleration time of 4.9 seconds. Beginning with the 2017 model year, a turbo-diesel ver-sion of the two litre engine will be offered. This engine will produce 180 HP and 318 torques. Horsepower is about the same as that of the XE’s closest competitor, the BMW 328d, but the XE has 38 lbs-ft more torque. All engines will be attached to eight-speed automatic transmissions. There is more speculation on engines. The supercharged three litre V6 will be replaced sometime after 2016 by an inline six, probably turbocharged. Jaguar’s architecture will accommodate an inline engine well, and the company has a long history with that type of engine. An inline three cylinder engine will supposedly be the base engine for the XE and the F-Pace, though not initial-ly in North America. We are told that the future of the XK hangs in the bal-ance. Jaguar is apparently concerned that the XK may potentially drain sales away from the F-Type, so a new XK would be less of a sports car and more of a luxury two-seater. Or it might just be discontinued. Back to the XE. The XE is expected to be Jaguar’s vol-ume leader, so the company will offer as many variants as it thinks will sell. So look for a coupé, a wagon, and maybe a convertible. There may also be an XE-R, pro-pelled by the five litre supercharged V8 and churning out around 500 HP. Furthermore, Jaguar is supposedly looking to bring a large SUV to market. This will depend on the success or otherwise of the F-Pace. If a decision is taken to produce such a vehicle, it would either be based on JLR’s modular vehicle architecture, or on the Range Rover Sport. It would probably be called the J-Pace. Of course, all of the foregoing is speculation by members of the automobile journalism community, but we know that observing future developments at JLR will be an in-teresting and rewarding experience. Exciting stuff ahead!

After Jeremy Clark-son was fired as host of popular car enthusiast’s show "Top Gear," the BBC has been searching for a new front man. Co-hosts James May and Richard Hammond will not remain on the show, and it looks like we'll see some new faces for the upcoming season.

The search has been narrowed down, and BBC execs are in talks with actor Philip Glenister, news presenter Guy Martin, and Jodie Kidd from "Classic Car Show." Accord-ing to the U.K's Sunday Express, the team is desperate to make this deal, especially after "Top Gear" co-creator Andy Wilman also reportedly turned in his resignation.

Shortly after the news of Clarkson's termination, May told The Guardian his thoughts about the show without its front man. “It just wouldn’t work. That would be lame,” May said frankly. So maybe it's not surprising both May and Hammond have opted against signing new contracts.

If all goes through and the BBC can sign its dream team, the show will be back on the air as early as spring 2016, but "Top Gear" won't be the same without Clarkson.

(The foregoing article is from Motor Trend, with the Ex-press newspaper being the prime source.)

Sunday, April 19th was the first Coffee Klatch of the year in the sunshine at Turkey Head. We arrived at just after 9:00 AM (in a non-Jaguar or ‘alien’ as Marke would call it) and soon after club members filed in. A lot of Jaguars showed up including Barry McCallan’s classic Jaguar XK120 which attracted a lot of attention. Some folks strolled over to the Oak Bay Marina Coffee House for cof-fee, lattes, scones, bagels and muffins. A good hearty breakfast for everyone. Lou provided Happy Birthday cup-cakes as April 19th is her birthday.

A new Land Rover drove in with Jaguar Victoria sales rep Ruben Little at the helm with his wife and son. Julie Bai-ley took Ruben’s wife for a spin in her E-Type in a rather spirited drive, we understand.

Winter is gone and we are back to one of the most popu-lar gatherings we have – open air and sunshine, bonnets open, coffee and lots of stories.

See you at the next Coffee Klatch

This is a first. We have two Prowl write-ups. 1. From the perspective of the organizers: A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY By Lois Smith Despite the many other car-oriented events competing for the attention of Jaguar owners on Sunday, May 3, 25 in-trepid Prowlers turned up at Tillicum Mall at the appointed day and time. There they learned that this Prowl consisted of many narrow, winding roads, several of which have featured at one time or another on previous Smith Prowls. Under a flawless blue sky, with the sun beaming down warmth, the Prowlers departed, heading for the delights of Goward and Prospect Lake Roads. Not all were driving Jaguars and amongst the “aliens” was John and Ruth Robinson in their beautiful blue Bentley convertible. As it happened, on Goward the four different Jaguar sports cars, all with tops down of course, brought up the rear and one bemused gentleman stood watching the parade and waving as the Drews’ F-Type, the Jeffreys’ XJS, the Stur-geons’ E-Type and the Smiths’ XK8 went zipping past. Then it was up Atkins Road, with its mix of brand-new houses, small farms and older established neighbour-hoods, through downtown Langford (Remember when it was called “Dogpatch”? No way today!), and along High-way 1 to the start of Phil’s and Lois’s all-time favourite: Humpback Road which in places is barely one-car wide with oncoming traffic. Fortunately, the Prowl went through unscathed, finally arriving at Olympic View Golf Club for an excellent lunch. We found the staff friendly and very accommodating, the food good and reasonably priced, and the crimson rhododendrons out front were simply magnificent. We couldn’t have wished for a better day for it - thanks to all who participated 2. From the perspective of a participant: A Little Bit Country Prowl By Graham Darby We gave Phil and Lois Smith a vote of thanks for another well planned Prowl. We had just enjoyed good conversa-tion and good lunch at the beautifully located Olympic View Golf Cub. The sun was shining and eagles were soaring overhead. How did we get here? Phil and Lois had devised a wan-dering route from Tillicum Mall through our local country-side. They had us negotiating every narrow and winding lane they knew. We visited most of the municipalities in our area and experienced a spring morning of country air. With Bonnie Raitt on the stereo and the sunroof open I was feeling “A Bit Country.” The Jaguars were well mixed; a roadster and a coupe E- Types, an F-Type, both convertible and coupe XK8s, X- Type wagon, several XJ6s, XJR, XJS, and S-Type . Also an impressive open modern Bentley was much admired in the parking lot at Tillicum. The driving lasted nearly an hour and a half, and kept us smiling.

Photo Contest We have a winner!

We are pleased to announce the winner of last month’s Photo Contest. Readers were tasked with identifying the city shown behind the new Jaguar XF depicted on the cover.

The city is Dubai. First to respond correctly was Craig Talbot, a mem-ber from Calgary. Congratulations! Runner up was Alan Heartfield.

I know Jaguar has been trying to make the interface be-tween owners and service writers more customer-friendly, and I am wondering if this sign is an example of that. (Picture courtesy of Ian Marshall and Alan Heartfield)

There is a story going around the Net of the disinterment of a 1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS from the back yard of a house in the West Athens section of Los Angeles. Apparently in 1978 a cocaine-addicted police informant told the police of a buried car at a certain address there. Upon investigation, the said Ferrari was

discovered and returned to the surface. Not wanting to compromise their informant, police put out a story that kids digging on the property found the car and notified them. Anyway, according to the informant, the owner, a certain Rosendo Cruz of Alhambra, California, had paid a pair of unsavoury characters to “steal” the car as he and his wife dined at the Brown Derby restaurant on Wilshire Boule-vard. The idea was for Cruz to get the insurance money, and the thieves to cut up the car, sell what they could, and ditch the rest somewhere safe. But it seems they de-cided instead to bury the car in a disused swimming pool, and presumably come back for it later. Police never identified the thieves, and Cruz received the insurance settlement. No charges were ever laid. The car was sold by the insurance company, changed hands a couple of times, and is now owned by a Brad Howard. (Howard says it was the first Ferrari he has owned, he is actually a Jaguar guy.) Now restored to its former glory, the Dino is a much-enjoyed car for Howard and his family.

eaders may remember a recent e-mail I sent around detailing the 1930 exploits of a certain Woolf Barnato

and his bet that he could leave Cannes and be at his Lon-don club before the famous French Blue Train, departing at the same time, could arrive in Calais. Barnato drove a Bentley Speed Six in the race, which he won by four minutes. Now, to mark the 85th anniversary of the bet, Bentley has built a special version of its Mulsanne Speed. From Yahoo News: “To commemorate the 85th anniversary of the legendary wager that saw a Bentley Speed Six driven by Woolf Bar-nato get from Cannes to London before the Calais-Mediterranée Express made it from Cannes to Calais, the company is building a very special version of its flagship Mulsanne Speed. Hand-built by Bentley's Mulliner division artisans, only four examples of the ‘Blue Train' -- the signature design cues for which will be inspired by the original car -- will be offered to clients. What's more, the very first model will also feature a per-sonalized hand-made hamper stocked with Robbe & Berking silver-plated cutlery, Haviland Limoges porcelain crockery, LINLEY crystal champagne flutes and an Ango-ra picnic rug. "The fact that we are producing just four of these Limited Editions is highly significant, as Barnato famously made it to the club in London four minutes before the train arrived in Calais," said Robert Engstler, Bentley Regional Director Europe.”

The Bentley Speed “Blue Train.” The Blue Train had been raced before, but only between points on the Riviera and Calais. First to beat the train, in January 1930, was a Rover Light Six, driven by Dudley Noble. Noble beat the train between St Raphael on the Cote d’Azur and Calais by 20 minutes. The next car to win was an Alvis Silver Eagle, driven by E.J.P. Eugster. This time it wasn’t even close, the Alvis arriving in Calais three hours before the train. The Blue Train in black & white

R Interestingly, the Bentley “Blue Train” shown in the e-mail was not the Bentley that won Woolf Barnato his £100 bet in his famous race with Le Train Bleu. In that race Barnato and his co-driver, amateur gofer Dale Bourn, drove an H.J. Mulliner-bodied Bentley Speed Six. Barnato took de-livery of the fastback Bentley Sportsman’s Coupé by Gur-ney Nutting two months later, in May,1930. He named this car the “Blue Train Special” in memory of the race.

T he first race of the Jaguar Heritage Challenge series took place earlier this month at the Donington Historic Festival at the Donington Park circuit near the town of Castle Donington in northern Leicestershire. The series of five annual races is open to pre-1966 Jaguar cars. The cars are split into five classes: XK series cars; saloon models; C-Type, D-Type and XKSS and two E-Type clas-ses. The other four races this year will be held at Silverstone, Brands Hatch, the Nürburgring and Oulton Park. For info on the Jaguar Heritage Challenge, see: www.jaguar.com/about-jaguar/jaguar-heritage/heritage-challenge.html

You will no doubt remember Merritt’s e-mail describing the entry of JLR North America’s Vice President, Marketing Kim McCullough and her husband’s 1954 XK120 in the 1,000 mile rally re-creating the famous Mille Miglia road race that ran from 1927 to 1957. The rally follows the route of the old race, which ran from Brescia in northern Italy to Rome and back. But theirs is hardly the only Jaguar to participate in the event. Apart from private entries, Jaguar Heritage is en-tering nine cars of 1950’s vintage; three C-Types, three D-Types, an XK120 and XK140, and a Mk VII. Racing driv-er Derek Bell will drive one of the C-Types, with the oth-ers driven by Jaguar engineer Mike Cross and Royal Au-tomobile Club Motoring Committee chairman Ben Cussons. The D-Types will be driven by Jaguar design director Ian Callum, TV chef James Martin and classic car expert Simon Kidston. The XK120 will be driven by Jodie Kidd from TV’s Classic Car Show and the XK140 by sing-er/songwriter Eliot Gleave. The Mk VII will be in the hands of TV presenter and motorcycle racer Charley Boorman.

1990 Jaguar Kensington The Jaguar Kensington was a co-operative project be-tween Jaguar and Ital Design to give Jaguar a new look for the 1990’s. Apparently Jaguar decided not to proceed beyond the prototype, and the project was dropped. The Kensington would have been powered by Jaguar’s fuel injected 5,345 cc V12. Ital Design used the design as a basis for its Lexus GS project.

1967 Jaguar Pirana by Bertone Designed by a group of motoring writers commissioned by the UK’s Sunday Telegraph magazine to create a lux-urious high-performance car, the Pirana went from de-sign drawings to complete car in five months at the Car-rozzeria Bertone in Turin. The car is built on the E-Type chassis, and has the XK 4.2 litre engine and E-Type run-ning gear. One prototype was built and shown at the 1967 Earls Court Motor Show. The car never went into production, and the one proto-type is now owned by an Ed Superfon of Los Angeles.
