Moon Landing

Page 11: NSC LEAD

11

THE SITUATION •  You   are   a   member   of   a   space   crew   scheduled   to

rendezvous  with  a  mother  ship  on  the  lighted  surface  of  the  moon.  However,  due  to  mechanical  difficul=es,  your  own  ship  was  forced  to  land  at  a  spot  200  miles  from  the  rendezvous  point.

•  During  re-‐entry  and  landing,  much  of  the  equipment  aboard  was  damaged  and,  since  survival  depends  on  reaching   the   mother   ship,   the   most   cri=cal   items  available  must  be  chosen  for  the  200-‐mile  trip.

Page 12: NSC LEAD

12

YOUR MOON LANDING CHALLENGE  •  15   items   are   listed   as   being   intact   and

undamaged  aFer  landing  (on  your  handout).

•  Your  task   is   to  rank  them  in  terms  of   their  importance  for  your  crew,  to  allow  them  to  reach  the  rendezvous  point.

•  Place  the  number  1  by  the  most  important  item,   the   number   2   by   the   second   most  important,  and  so  on  through  to  number  15  for  the  least  important.  In  column  A.

•  You   have   10   minutes   to   make   your  individual   ranking   now   in   silence   (no  talking).

Page 13: NSC LEAD

13

OUR MOON LANDING CHALLENGE  •  Form  groups  of  4  people  with  those  around

you.

•  Together  you  will  make  a  collecFve  ranking  of  the  importance  of  the  15  items.

•  Discuss   your   individual   choices   and   refine  them   based   on   the   group’s   collec=ve  thoughts.   Record   your   group’s   ranking   in  column  B.

•  You   have   15  minutes   to  make   your   group  ranking  now  (by  talking  &  listening  ;)

Page 14: NSC LEAD

14

HOW DID YOU SCORE? •  On the following slide you will see the expert ranking of the

items from NASA which will help us calculate & compare scores. •  For each item, copy the NASA ranking onto the far left column

of your score sheet.

EXAMPLE 15

Page 15: NSC LEAD

15

EXPERT RANKING •  For each item, copy the NASA ranking onto the far left column of your score sheet

Page 16: NSC LEAD

16

HOW DID YOU SCORE? •  Now you know the expert ranking of the items from NASA

which will help us calculate & compare scores. •  For each item, record the number of points that your ranking

(Column A) differs from the NASA ranking and then add up all the points to record your overall individual score in the final row. Disregard plus or negative differences.

EXAMPLE 9 6 15

Page 17: NSC LEAD

17

HOW DID WE SCORE? •  Repeat the same process, this time record the number of points

that Our Ranking (Column B) differs from the NASA ranking and then add up all the points to record your overall group score in the final row.

EXAMPLE 5 10 15

Page 18: NSC LEAD

18

So what? What now?

Page 19: NSC LEAD

How  was  the  result?  Which  score  was  higher  –  individual  or  group  score?   Why  might  that  be  so?   How  was  the  process?  What  might  you  do  differently  to  get  a  beQer  result  &  experience  next  Fme?     In  which  AIESEC  situaFons  might  the  same  apply?

Grow3 We grow our results by growing ourselves

& others

Page 22: NSC LEAD

22

Why how we think matters

Page 23: NSC LEAD

Putting your minds to the test!!!

Page 24: NSC LEAD

How much fat is your brain made of? 1/3 2/3 All of it is fat!

Page 25: NSC LEAD

How many thoughts does the average person have each day? 20,000 50,000 70,000

Page 26: NSC LEAD

Can your brain change your structure? No, its biologically set In some special people Yes, parts can grow

Page 27: NSC LEAD

The Basic Formula

Page 28: NSC LEAD
Page 29: NSC LEAD

We can change the structure of our brains….

Page 30: NSC LEAD

We grow where we place effort & practice

People who play music have been found to have auditory centres that are BIGGER than normal. The ‘sound’ area of their brain grew through practising their music.

Page 31: NSC LEAD
Page 32: NSC LEAD

The more connections our brain makes, the more we grow them:

LEARNING!

The more connections they make and the more space they dedicate for processing

Page 33: NSC LEAD

Our thoughts are just as real for our

brains as our actions – that’s why

they matter

Page 34: NSC LEAD

If we want to grow ourselves, we need to help our brains make the best connections by focusing our time

& effort

Page 35: NSC LEAD

In her book Mindset, Carol Dweck explains why it’s not our abilities and talent that bring us success – but in which mindset we approach them

Page 36: NSC LEAD

So, what is a mindset?

Creates a whole mental world for you to live and operate within

It’s related to your belief

about ability & intelligence

Page 37: NSC LEAD

What is my mindset most of the time?

Page 38: NSC LEAD

1.  Your  intelligence  is  something  very  basic  about  you  that  you  can’t  change  very  much.   2.  You  can  learn  new  things,  but  you  can’t  really  change  how  intelligent  you  are.   3.  No  maQer  how  much  intelligence  you  have,  you  can  always  change  it  quite  a  bit.   4.  You  can  always  substanFally  change  how  intelligent  you  are.

READ  EACH  STATEMENT  ABOUT  INTELLIGENCE  AND  DECIDE  WHETHER  YOU  MOSTLY  AGREE  WITH  IT  OR  DISAGREE  WITH  IT.

Page 39: NSC LEAD

1.  You  are  a  certain  kind  of  person  and  not  much  can  be  done  to  really  change  that.   2.  No  maQer  what  kind  of  person  you  are,  you  can  always  change  substanFally.   3.  You  can  do  things  differently,  but  the  important  parts  of  who  are  you  are  can’t  really  be  changed.   4.  You  can  always  change  basic  things  about  the  kind  of  person  you  are.

READ  EACH  STATEMENT  ABOUT  PERSONALITY  AND  DECIDE  WHETHER  YOU  MOSTLY  AGREE  WITH  IT  OR  DISAGREE  WITH  IT.

45

You are deciding whether or not to run for a new leadership position in

AIESEC

Page 46: NSC LEAD

Discuss: What would you be: 1. Thinking ? 2. Feeling ? 3. Doing and/or deciding ? In your assigned mindset

Page 47: NSC LEAD

47

Your term in AIESEC is finishing and you need to transition to the next team but they seem quite fresh

and inexperienced

Page 48: NSC LEAD

Discuss: What would you be: 1. Thinking ? 2. Feeling ? 3. Doing and/or deciding ? In your assigned mindset

Page 49: NSC LEAD

49

Your LC’s biggest incoming exchange client has just cancelled all their

trainees for the last quarter.

Page 50: NSC LEAD

Discuss: What would you be: 1. Thinking ? 2. Feeling ? 3. Doing and/or deciding ? In your assigned mindset

Page 51: NSC LEAD

51

GOOD NEWS: We can choose the mindset that

we have ☺

Page 52: NSC LEAD

52

REFLECT & SHARE IN PAIRS Remember a time / an experience when you were able to think and

act with a growth mindset. It might be from your AIESEC life, studies, professional life, relationships, hobbies, sport, family life….

•  Think about:

− What happened?

− How did you show a growth mindset?

− How did it help you to have a growth mindset?

− What enabled/made it easier for you to keep a growth mindset in that situation despite the difficulties you faced?

•  Share your story with your neighbour

Page 53: NSC LEAD

Growing ourselves is about what we focus on and what we do – our growth mindset

developing our growth

mindset is about building new habits

Page 54: NSC LEAD

Growing Ourselves - Habits What you do everyday without thinking

Neuroscience says it takes ______ weeks of doing the same thing everyday to build a habit.

a.  3 Weeks b.  6 Weeks c.  9 Weeks d.  12 Weeks DO IT ONCE, DO IT TWICE, DO IT AGAIN

Its about consistent effort – repeated action

Page 55: NSC LEAD

Neuroscience says we can only develop ______ habits at one time. a.  1 -2 only b.  9-10 c.  There is no limit d.  It depends on the individual

BRAINS CAN ONLY FOCUS ON 1 -2 HABITS AT ANY TIME; MASTERY TAKES PERSISTANCE

Page 56: NSC LEAD

What  are  1-‐2  habits  /  behaviours  that  I  want  to  GROW  /  strengthen  in  myself  to  help  me  think  and  act  with  a  growth  mindset  more  of  the  Fme?

82

What does mindset mean for us as leaders?

Page 83: NSC LEAD

Relevant today more than ever…

21st Century Leadership

Page 84: NSC LEAD

84

We have all experienced fixed mindset and growth mindset leadership

Page 85: NSC LEAD

85

Groups of 4 (5mins) Share your stories about the fixed mindset leaders you worked with in your AIESEC time – what did they do and what impact did it have on you as a follower?

Page 86: NSC LEAD

86

Lets hear some real stories in the room

What are our own

experiences of fixed mindset leadership?

Page 87: NSC LEAD

87

Now share your stories about the growth mindset leaders you worked with in your AIESEC time – what did they do and what impact did it have on you as a follower? 5 minutes

Page 88: NSC LEAD

Lets hear some real stories in the room

What are our own

experiences of growth mindset leadership?

Page 89: NSC LEAD

Growth Mindset Leaders

Fixed Mindset Leaders

Blames others for mistakes Avoids risks and failure Stifles critics and rivals Live for ego – it’s all about them Only want to prove themselves Uses power and positional authority

Love what they do; foster others Inner drive to get things done See o\bstacles as opportunities Tackle tough set-backs & failures Confident they will succeed; believe Seek feedback, It’s a way to improve

RESEARCH: What do they do?

Page 90: NSC LEAD

Results in long term

Page 91: NSC LEAD

Growth Mindset Leaders

Fixed Mindset Leaders

Positive climate & engagement Generate innovation & ideas Empower greater results in ST & LT

Negative climate; demotivation Innovation; maintain status quo Limited ST task based results Lower performance in the ST/LT

MISSION ALERT

Page 94: NSC LEAD

LIVE practical example How do I give feedback in a growth mindset?

Page 95: NSC LEAD

Important for missions The Feedback Formula 1. For the sake of what are you giving this feedback? 2. What was the observable behaviour? 3. What was the affect it had on you? 4. How does it make you feel? 5. What would you like to happen?

Page 96: NSC LEAD

Lets see it in action

Page 97: NSC LEAD

97

A recent study of leaders showed the most successful demonstrated one thing in common - a growth mindset

Page 98: NSC LEAD

LIVING ABOVE OR BELOW THE LINE

Page 99: NSC LEAD

LIVING ABOVE OR BELOW THE LINE

Ownership Accountability Responsibility Blame Excuse Denial

Page 100: NSC LEAD

100

As leaders our mindset is not static – it changes;

and often in the one day. It can have a big effect on

others and create a culture within our teams/organisation

Page 101: NSC LEAD

Look  at  the  1-‐2  habits  you  wrote  down  before  lunch      If  you  developed  these  as  a  leader;  what  impact  would  it  have  on  your  team?  What  might  be  different?

Page 102: NSC LEAD

What skills do we need to know as leaders to help grow others?

Page 103: NSC LEAD

Does your team feel motivated? Do you know why your team are in AIESEC? Does your team feel empowered to achieve their tasks? Do you question the capabilities of your team? Do you feel intimidated by others peoples success and want to be the hero of your LC story?

Page 104: NSC LEAD

104

Questions that matter

Page 105: NSC LEAD

105

QUESTIONS that matter are a powerful tool for: - growing others - growing results

Page 106: NSC LEAD

MORE COMPLEXITY – MORE CHAOS

21st Century Leadership

Page 107: NSC LEAD

Our brains respond differently to statements vs questions….

Frontal Lobe

Reptilian Brain: FIGHT OR FLIGHT

Page 108: NSC LEAD

108

What would a fixed mindset leader think

about asking questions?

Page 109: NSC LEAD

109

What would a growth mindset leader think

about asking questions?

Page 110: NSC LEAD

Millions saw the apple fall, but only Newton asked WHY?

Page 111: NSC LEAD

111

“If I had an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on it, I would use the first 55 minutes to formulate the right question because as soon as I have identified the right question I can solve the problem in less than five minutes.” - ALBERT EINSTEIN

Page 112: NSC LEAD

112

A POWERFUL QUESTION… •  Generates curiosity and invites creativity

•  Focuses inquiry and stimulates reflective conversation

•  Is thought provoking and surfaces underlying assumptions

•  Touches a deeper meaning

•  Is open and does not assume a certain answer

•  Is not an opinion disguised as a question

•  Helps to reframe the topic

•  Shows real interest and is sincere

Page 113: NSC LEAD

113

ARE THESE POWERFUL QUESTIONS? WHY? WHY NOT? 1.  Don’t you think we should buy it?

2.  Do you feel appreciated?

3.  What does it mean for you to be ethical?

4.  Why do you think that?

5.  How might that look like?

Page 114: NSC LEAD

Page 119: NSC LEAD

119

QUESTIONS that matter are a powerful tool for: - growing others - growing results

Page 120: NSC LEAD

120

POWERFUL QUESTIONS HELP TO GROW RESULTS BY…

•  Helping to create clarity around “the why” •  Generate common direction and purpose for

whole team and organization •  Invite participation and co-creation of all

stakeholders •  Creating space for autonomy and

empowerment •  Invite reflection for learning and innovation

Page 121: NSC LEAD

POST-MOTOROLA

1.  What went well? 2.  What did not go so well? 3.  What did I learn? 4.  What will I put into practice / do better next

time? 5.  How did this project help us to get to our goal

and vision ?

Page 122: NSC LEAD

122

EMPOWERING OTHERS THROUGH POWERFUL QUESTIONS

HOW creates confidence that it is possible

MIGHT open to possibilities and new ideas

WE inviting participation & collective responsibility

………?

WHAT IF ..…………………………...?

Page 123: NSC LEAD

WHAT IF I could put a 1000 songs in my pocket? HOW MIGHT WE build a bank for the poor?

Page 124: NSC LEAD

124

What is the powerful question

that my team needs to hear

right now?

Page 125: NSC LEAD

Does your team feel motivated? Do you know why your team are in AIESEC? Does your team feel empowered to achieve their tasks? Do you question the capabilities of your team? Do you feel intimidated by others peoples success and want to be the hero of your LC story?

Page 126: NSC LEAD

126

Motivating Others

Page 127: NSC LEAD

127

Motivation is derived from the Latin word ‘movere’ which means ‘to move’ or ‘to energize’ or ‘to activate’

Page 128: NSC LEAD

128

Mission ALERT Get into teams of 5 You now have 2 mins to show us

what motivation looks like in action

Page 129: NSC LEAD

129

You will now watch a video on Human Drives. Get your pens ready to write down notes for the team trivia quiz that will follow WHO WILL BE VICTORIOUS?

Page 130: NSC LEAD

The winner will receive a MYSTERY PRIZE!

Page 131: NSC LEAD
Page 132: NSC LEAD

QUIZ

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Page 133: NSC LEAD

133

Mystery Prize – there is none! We are all winners!!!

Page 134: NSC LEAD

Whose biggest motivation was the prize? Who was motivated to look smart in front of others? Whose motivation was for the learning?

Page 135: NSC LEAD

135

In your groups, discuss what you got from the video: Surprises? ahas? Affirmations? Questions?

10

Page 136: NSC LEAD

136

If you had to say; what is the most dominant approach (extrinsic v intrinsic) you use or experience in AIESEC?

Page 137: NSC LEAD
Page 138: NSC LEAD
Page 139: NSC LEAD

139

Like we saw in Dan Pink’s Video, extrinsic rewards are limited in growing results and have some real drawbacks

Page 140: NSC LEAD

Speedy Brainstorm How can you build intrinsic motivation in your team? 1. Autonomy 2. Mastery 3. Purpose

Page 141: NSC LEAD

Listening The Art of

And Building on the Ideas of Others

Page 147: NSC LEAD

Do  you  need  to  innovate  to  grow  your  LC’s  results?   Do  you  need  to  improve  your  team  relaFonships  and  understand  each  other  beQer?

Do  you  need  to  deal  differently  with  criFcism?

Do  you  open  space  for  experimentaFon  and  innovaFon?

Page 148: NSC LEAD

148

The of listening is creating empathy

Page 149: NSC LEAD

149

Page 150: NSC LEAD

150

Swap partners. Oldest person will be the mirror. Close your eyes. Remember a recent situation with high, intense emotions – positive or negative – how did you feel? How did your body react? Now, without talking, express that recent emotional reaction with your body to your partner, who will mirror your emotion physically as best as they can. Now swap and repeat. Without talking.

LET’S GET EMOTIONAL!

Page 151: NSC LEAD

151

How was it to listen with your

eyes?

Page 152: NSC LEAD

152

80% of all communication is

non-verbal

Page 153: NSC LEAD

153

How well were you able to put yourself in the other’s place?

Page 154: NSC LEAD

154

How might creating more

empathy with my team impact our

growth?

Page 155: NSC LEAD

155

But how can we listen to more than one

person at a time? How might we build on the

ideas of others & innovate?

Page 156: NSC LEAD

156

When we host a conversation we need to know when to DIVERGE

& when to CONVERGE

Page 157: NSC LEAD

157

What questions might help the group to diverge – create

choices?

Page 158: NSC LEAD

158

How might we help the team to generate

ideas?

Page 159: NSC LEAD

159

“The best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas.”

Linus Pauling, Nobel Prize chemist

HINTS & TIPS:

1.  Set challenging goals for number of ideas in certain amount of time.

2.  Car + Bird = Aeroplane

3.  “Yes, and” vs “Yes, but”
