2019 Neighborhood Studios Apprentice Guidelines & Application
ABOUTNEIGHBORHOODSTUDIOSNeighborhoodStudios,theGreaterHartfordArtsCouncil’saward-winningsummerartsapprenticeshipprogram,offersaone-of-a-kindlearningexperienceinthearts,providingGreaterHartfordteenswith
paid,hands-onartistictrainingandvaluablecareerskillsessentialtotoday’sworkforce.Forsixweeks
eachsummer,theprogramsendsparticipatingteenstoartstudiosatculturalorganizationsthroughoutHartford,unitingbothstudentsandtheirfamiliestothecity’sdiverseartsandculturalcommunity.
Eachstudioprovidesspecifictraininginadifferentartformandstudentsworkaspaidapprentices
alongsideMasterTeachingArtists.Apprenticesalsoparticipateinweeklycareerskillsworkshopsonresumebuilding,financialliteracy,interviewingandnetworkingskills.Apprenticesreceiveaweeklystipendof$100perweekforsixweeks.ThisprogramtakesplacefromJune24–August2,2019.
Spaceislimitedsonotallapplicantswillbeaccepted.Sincethisisacompetitiveprocess,inordertobeconsideredyoumustfullycompletetheapplication.Studiosmayrequireinterviews;samplesofcreative

YouthJazzOrchestraapprenticeswillgainimprovisationalandsoloperformanceskills,and
exposuretotraditionalAfrican-Americanmusicincludingjazz,blues,gospelandR&B.Studioworkincludesthestudyofmusictheory,sight-reading,Westernclassicaltechnique,modern
concepts,listentoclassiccompositionsperformedbyjazzgreats,andstudythehistoryofPan-
AfricanMusic.Underthedirectionofmulti-instrumentalistandYJODirector,RenéMcLean,apprenticesintheYouthJazzOrchestrawillincreasetheirimprovisationalproficiencyand
abilitiestoperformasanorchestraandsolo.Theapprenticeswillgainarrangingskillsby
workingtogether,withStudioCoordinatorsandinstructorstochoosejazzcompositionsand
musicfortheShowcaseevent;andtheywillperformatahigh-levelofproficiencyintheYJOMusicShowcaseandinthefinalproduction(2performancesinthefinalweekoftheSummer
Program).TheYJOStudioCoordinatorsandinstructorsprovideinterestedstudentswithguidanceinapplyingtocollege-levelstudiesinmusicprograms.

BreakdancingShakespeareapprenticesworktowardperforminganabridgedShakespearean
playinfusedwithhip-hopdance.Throughouttheprogram,apprenticesparticipateinall-day
rehearsalsandworkshopswithmasterteachingartists.BreakdancingShakespeareapprenticesacquireperformanceskillssuchasbreakdancingtechniques,physicalandvocal
characterization,andinterpretationandrecitationofclassicaltext.Utilizingtheirnewskills,
apprenticescollaboratetomounta90-minuteproduction.Thepublicperformancesthatconcludetheprogramarehigh-energyandaccessibleforallages.

EyeonVideoisanunparalleledopportunityforapprenticestolearntheartoffilmmaking
undertheguidanceofaMasterTeachingArtistandotherfilmprofessionals.EyeonVideo’sapprentice-focusedcurriculumincludes:fundamentalsofscreenwriting,storytelling,
composition,operationofprofessionalcamerasandfilmingequipment,andpost-production
process.Apprenticewillgainanunderstandingoffilmhistory,theintricaciesoffilmmaking,andthecreativeprocess.Eachapprenticewilldevelopanindependentproject,investigating
thelanguageoffilmanditspotentialforstorytelling.Apprenticeswillbeaskedtoreflecton
theirownculturalbackgroundsasitrelatestothisyear'sthemeof"Identity".EyeonVideoemphasizesapprentices'creationoforiginalwork,backedbyastrongfoundationinfilmstudieshighlightingculturalfilmlandmarks,contemporarystandouts,andexemplarysamples
