CHANGES FROM THIS ISSUE

A popular complaint about these fleetlists has been the

coloured pages that made prin5ng out for historical record a

liBle ink intensive.

With this in mind, we are trialling a mostly white page version.

STRANGE MODELERS OF UNIVERSAL TRAINS

A social group set up to promote friendship, modelling, assisting preservation, railfan based activity and research/publish rail

contribute to the saving of our rich railway heritage.

THE VARIATIONS More Than You Probably Ever Imagined!

UNDERCOATS Broadmeadow built units, excepting NR2, were all out shopped in a grey undercoat, for initial mainline trials, and received their final paint work at Goninan Lansdowne. 1) NR1, the first NR to see mainline trials, was all over grey body, cab, ends and pilots, with orange around the number boxes above the cab windows, and black running board. This was the only unit to have grey pilots and grey on the Frame section (sand box/anti crash protection) on the no.1 end. 2) The standard Grey undercoat variation was all over grey, with a black frame, running board and the end under the cab windows, orange around the number box area above the cab windows (NR’s 4-11, 19-60) 3) Same as (2) but had orange around cab windows as well (NR3) 4) Same as (2) although was grey around the number box area instead of Orange (NR’s 12-18) NATIONAL RAIL LIVERY Broadmeadow built units NR1-60 (excluding NR2, plus NR61) were painted into the standard National Rail Marigold and Grey livery at Lansdowne. Bassendean built units NR61-120 were all painted at Bassendean. 1) Lansdowne painted units had orange fog lights where as the Bassendean painted units had the black stripe on the pilot extend over the fog light. 2) NR61, the first Bassendean painted unit (later repainted at Lansdowne), was delivered with a plain grey pilot on the No.1 end and plain orange pilot on the no.2 end. 3) The first nine Bassendean painted units, NR61-69, the sole Broadmeadow painted NR2 and Lansdowne painted NR3, 5, 6, were released initially without NRC Diamonds on the ends or any emblems or wording on the sound deflectors, these being later applied at Broadmeadow. 4) From mid 1999 the cab side numbers were changed to a larger font size. This continued till the whole fleet was converted. 5) Not really a livery variation, but will be mentioned anyway, is the change in the number box format. The first ten or so NR’s built at both sites initially had both NR and their number in all four number boxes. The font was small and hard to read, so were redesigned to have the Class “NR” in the left hand side and the unit number on the right side 6) Post Pacific National, most NR’s had their diamonds painted out and had the application of the Pacific National emblem

applied to the Sound plates, NR62 became the last NR to carry the NRC diamonds in service.

NATIONAL RAIL—SPECIAL LIVERIES

National Rail opted to paint eight Broadmeadow based units in special schemes to promote different freight modes offered these

being Trailer Rail, Sea Train and Steel Link.

Two additional units were selected to be painted in Indigenous liveries for use on the newly acquired GSR contract.

1) NR30 was the first unit selected for an Indigenous livery, it received a base NRC paint job at Lansdowne similar to the

standard scheme except that the grey sides extended across the cab sides, but it retained the orange ends.

After a couple of months in this scheme it was forwarded to Adelaide for its final livery application, the indigenous scheme

applied became known as the “Snake” livery. When first released in this scheme the unit retained the orange ends and NRC

diamonds on the hood sides, but was later modified again and the hood side diamond painted out and the artwork continued to

the units ends.

2) NR52 was the second unit selected for an Indigenous livery; it received a base NRC paint job at Lansdowne similar to that

applied to NR30 except that it was black instead of grey. After a couple of months in this scheme it was forwarded to Adelaide for

its final livery application, the indigenous scheme applied became known as the “Pizza” livery.

3) NR53, 54, 55 received the Trailer Rail livery. This scheme was the same as the Standard livery except that green was used

instead of grey, and instead of the NRC diamond and National Rail appearing on the Sound deflectors, these units had Trailer

Rail and the associated emblems.

4) NR56, 57 received the Sea Train livery. This scheme was all over blue body, with a white running board, white/blue striped

pilots, white NRC diamonds on hood sides and a blue

NRC diamond on the ends applied to a white square.

The sound plates had special NRC emblems along with

the Sea Train wording.

5) NR58, 59, 60 received the Steel Link Livery. This

scheme was similar to the Sea Train scheme except had

grey instead of blue, and the Steel Link wording on the

sound plates.

PACIFIC NATIONAL VARIATIONS

The first locomotives repainted into a Pacific National

were NR class locos, two units were selected for trial liv-

eries and after a period of six months one variation would

be selected as the final PN livery.

23-9-1996

Page 18: NR CLASS FLEET V1 - · PDF filea special publication of the smut modellers group compiled by brad peadon & brad coulter - v1 nr class november 2016

1) The first loco released in a livery for PN was NR29 (released from the Goninan Paintshop at Broadmeadow on 11/03/2003)

which was also the version that was ultimately selected for the main scheme. NR’s 8 (12/04) & 73 (9/04) later received this

version of the livery. The livery was similar to the earlier NRC standard livery except that it was blue instead of grey and Yellow

instead of Marigold, and large Pacific National adorned each side of the hood sides, nothing featured on the sound plates, and

a large white reflective number was placed on both ends of the units. The blue cab side numbers are also reflective.

2) The 2nd loco released a livery for PN was NR103 (released from the Goninan Paint shop at Broadmeadow on 01/04/2003),

as this variation wasn’t selected NR103 remained a 1 off scheme until it was repainted into a standard version in 2013. This

scheme was similar to NR29 except had a blue cab and the cab side numbers were white.

3) After the first four PN repaints, NR52 was forwarded to UGL Goulburn (12/05) for repaint into yet another revised scheme based on NR29’s scheme, but with the addition of 4 stars replicating the Southern Cross, on the sides near the rear of the unit. NR52 was the only unit repainted at Goulburn and all PN repaints of the NR class afterwards were done at Chullora. This scheme remained the standard scheme until NR9 was repainted (2011), where a fifth star was added to the Southern Cross. 4) NR38 & NR51 have had partial repaints after fire damage repairs and do not have a number on the nose under the PN emblem, no PN emblems on the sides and only a Southern cross on 1 side but on opposite sides of each unit. PACIFIC NATIONAL SPECIAL LIVERIES Pacific National has had a few special schemes, primarily for their GSR contract, plus one for a advertisement campaign. 1) NR16 carried a South Australian Government sponsored Advertisement livery for Level Crossing Safety. Not actually a paint scheme but a vinyl decal was applied to the sides of the hood over the blue area of the standard Pacific National Livery for the duration of the sponsorship. Afterwards the decal was removed, leaving the original paintwork looking very worn. 2) Ghan Mk1 (NR75 09/2003, NR74 12/2003, NR109 01/2004). All over red body, with a silver running board, anti climber, steps & hand rails. White cab side numbers, silver ‘The Ghan’ name and camel emblem on hood sides, White ‘The Ghan’ and camel emblem on front and just the camel emblem on the rear. Red/Silver stripe pilot with red around the fog lights. (NR75 the silver stripe on the pilot extends across the fog lights) 3) Ghan mk2 (NR74, 75, 109) the Mk2 scheme is uniform across the 3 members. It basically the same as the Mk1 scheme except with the updated Ghan emblem in white on hood sides and ends, white running board, white cab side numbers, no end numbers, white/red stripes on the pilots, with red around the fog lights. 4) Indian Pacific Mk1 2005 (NR25 to NR28) All over dark blue, with a yellow running board and anti climbers, Indian Pacific in yellow with the Brown eagle emblem on the ends and Eagle emblem on hood sides. An additional plate similar to the sound barrier was added to the hand rails about mid way along the sides with Indian on 1 and Pacific on the other. Yellow cab side numbers, no end numbers, yellow/blue striped pilot with blue around the fog lights. 5) Indian Pacific Mk2 2011 (NR18) scheme had the Grey/silver cab and running board with shades of yellow striped on the sides. 6) Indian Pacific Mk3 2014 (NR25, 27, 28). This scheme is basically the standard PN livery of yellow cab, ends and running board and the blue hood, although with the Indian Pacific emblem in yellow on the hood sides, and in blue on the unit ends, Blue cab side numbers, no end numbers, and yellow/blue stripes on the pilots, with yellow around the fog lights. 7) Southern Spirit (SS) Mk1 2008 (NR84 & NR85) GSR’s Southern Spirit Livery. Three shades of green on the hood sides, white cab, anti climber and running board, silver cab roof, pilot sides & battery box, Silver Southern Spirit emblem on hood sides, green SS emblem on cab front, green cab side numbers. NR84 has green/white striped pilot with green fog light surrounds. NR85 has Silver/white striped pilot with silver fog light surrounds.
