NPM Rapid City Diocese Fall Newsletter
A Note from the Co-Directors Please make plans to attend the Oct. 4 NPM meeting at Blessed Sacrament. There will be many songs in various styles presented by several different choirs/ensembles in concert. No doubt you’ll find at least one that you’ll want to sing in your home parish. All songs will deal with the theme of love/charity. As we all know, that theme is repeated frequently in our readings. In addi-tion, a panel including people who attended the NPM convention in St. Louis this past summer will share some of their insights. For us in the Midwest, the national conventions of late are es-pecially exciting. Usually, conventions are held in the East. This year we met in St. Louis and next year it will be in Grand Rapids, Michigan from July 6-10. Start making plans now to attend. You won’t regret it. In addition, one of our parish priests will speak on the importance of music in the liturgy. Our work in music ministry is not an extra but rather an integral part of liturgy. Those in attendance will be blest and commissioned once again for the year. Our banquet is always enjoyable as we award our music ministers for their years of service (25, 40, and 50). Take a moment and nominate a priest as well as music minister for the NPM St. Cecilia Award. Persons who have exhibited an extraordinary effort toward ensuring the success of our NPM chapter would be excellent candidates for the Peggy Langenfeld Memorial Award. We look forward to seeing everyone at Blessed Sacrament on Oct. 4. Come and celebrate with us!
Carman Timmerman & Jackie Schnittgrund
Co-Directors
At the national convention of NPM held July 14-18 in St. Louis, Jackie Schnittgrund from Rapid City, SD, was awarded the Chapter Leader of the Year along with Dr. Robert Wolf, Lansing, MI, and Margie Kilty, Silver Spring, MA, the national office volunteer for chapters. Robert and Jackie have been Co-Chairs of the National Committee for Chapters since February 2013. Their committee's work with chapters has been outstanding as they worked to revise the committee's manuals and brochures, establish chapter websites, institute a mentor program for new and struggling chapters, and initiate publication of Chapter News as well as related articles on chapter matters. Jackie was also the recipient of the Outstanding Chapter Leader of the Year in 2012 at the national convention in Pittsburgh. Jackie is cur-rently the Co-Director of the NPM chapter in the Rapid City Diocese along with Carman Timmerman. She has been a choir director at Blessed Sacrament in Rapid City since 1977.

On June 14th about forty music ministers attended the Rapid City Chapter of NPM summer meeting
at the Cathedral of our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City. Attendees included a music minister from as far away as Las Vegas!
Following Morning Prayer, participants has an opportunity to learn about various musical tech-niques. Members selected from 1 of 4 sessions: organ from Justin Matters, keyboard from Lorraine Ptacek, guitar from Ed Fisher and vocal/conducting from Clayton and Anella Southwick.
Thanks to a donation from Oregon Catholic Press (OCP), every attendee received a complimentary boxed set that included a CD showcase with twenty songs and 2 music books. Using these re-sources, Jackie Schnittgrund and Terry Schroeder led the group in in a sight reading session.
Following a tasty lunch prepared by Cathedral volunteers and a business meeting, Fr. Michel Mulloy spoke to attendees. He explained the General Instructions of the Roman Missal (GIRM) in down-to-earth language.
All music ministers and clergy throughout the Rapid City Diocese are encouraged to attend quarterly NPM meetings. The emphases of these meetings are education, prayer and fellowship. The next NPM meeting will be Saturday, October 4th at Blessed Sacrament Church in Rapid City.
