Diagnostics New! Symptom based guided diagnostics are new on the 320C. This PC-based software program offers simplified problem assessment and faster diagnosis by utilizing fault tree analysis. The field technician simply clicks on a symptom description, machine fault code or system functional test and is guided to a most likely repair through a series of yes or no questions. If at any time additional information is needed, the technician can click on the SIS library and access parts information, the service manual (including disassembly and assembly), operators manual, schematics, service letters, service magazine articles and technical information bulletins. For the 320C Hydraulic Excavator, guided diagnostics have been developed to assist with troubleshooting the new hydraulics system and engine; information provided by development engineers and existing field experience. Diagnostic fault codes may also be referenced using guided diagnostics to assist in resolution to electrical problems. Symptom based guided diagnostics are part of your SIS CD-ROM subscription and may be accessed from SISs main menu by pressing the Guided Diagnostics button then specifying the appropriate serial number prefix. Guided diagnostics for the 320C will be available on the 7/2000 SIS CD release. For additional information on symptom based guided diagnostics, order the Caterpillar Guided Diagnostic Tutorial CD (RENR1236).

Translations The Operation & Maintenance Manual has been translated in the following languages: English French Portuguese Spanish Danish Dutch German Greek

Italian Finnish Russian Turkish Reference the Service Information Media #s List to order the appropriate manual. Please ensure that you check the serial number effectivity and machine origin to get the proper literature for your machine.

    Customer Support

In order to assist dealers and marketing companies with a successful launch of the 320C machines, the following customer support services are provided:

Life Cycle Planner Life Cycle Planner (LCP) is a windows based PC program which quickly and accurately calculates maintenance and repair costs and machine availability. The program can be used to explore the results of changes in maintenance practices, machine availability, parts costs and labor costs. LCP proves vital in estimating and calculating Customer Support Agreements tailored to the customer requirements. Both the LCP program and training is available through your regularly scheduled marketing training course. See your course training catalog, contact your District Rep or reference the Caterpillar PC Software Catalog (JERD2050) for detailed description of software programs, PC requirements and ordering information. Repair Options Planner The Repair Options Planner (ROP) PC program provides Caterpillar dealers with a tool to develop fixed Rated Repair Options as well as adjust them quickly and accurately to reflect changes in labor rates and/or parts prices. It also provides dealers with a repair option format and includes numerous repair options previously developed by Caterpillar and its dealers. Please refer to the Caterpillar PC Software Catalog (JERD2050) for detailed description of software programs, PC requirements and ordering information.

Preventative Maintenance Planner Preventive maintenance is the best way to protect your investment in your equipment and guarantee machine availability. The way to define your maintenance routine is with Cat Preventive Maintenance Planner (PMP) software. PMP is a stand-alone system that defines maintenance by organizing and printing itemized preventive maintenance and inspection checklists for your equipment. Each checklist lists parts, fluids and other material necessary for maintenance and tells you when procedures are required. With this guidance, you can be sure your personnel will complete the right maintenance on schedule so you can reduce downtime and get better performance from your equipment. How Preventive Maintenance Planner Works Preventive Maintenance Planner software is designed to consolidate maintenance requirements for all your equipment so you know exactly what maintenance is required and when. You can enter information yourself or get computerized checklists and parts lists on disk from your Cat dealer and load them directly into the PMP program. With PMP, you are not restricted to pre-existing guidelines. The program allows you to customize checklists to match the requirements of every unit in your fleet, or create your own checklists. After you've entered the basic information, PMP can print out a guide that tells you what preventive maintenance to do, when to do it and the materials and parts needed to complete the procedure for every piece of Cat equipment you own. Also PMP projects labor and material costs, so you can plan downtime and budget more accurately. Being Organized Means Being Efficient When proper maintenance of your equipment is performed on schedule, your machines give better performance and less downtime. PMP is an easy-to-use tool for managing preventive maintenance. It provides basic maintenance checklists, plus: Parts, fluids, and time estimates for every maintenance step Checklists for inspectors and lube crew Cost summary reports for each maintenance interval The ability to transfer information from PMP to Maintenance Control system software An on-line help system

Coolant Analysis & Sampling Intervals S-O-S Coolant Analysis Level 1 500 Hours after initial use, and thereafter as determined by customer requirements. S-O-S Coolant Analysis Level 2 1,000 Hours after initial use, and annually thereafter, or as determined by Level 1 analysis. The reason for the initial 500 Hour Level 1 and the 1,000 Hour Level 2 Analysis is that cooling system problems are most likely to occur early in the life of the machine. Some early life problems that have been detected by Coolant Analysis include coolant burned by water cooled turbochargers, electrolysis caused by electrical currents through the cooling system, air entrainment from air being pulled into the system, and exhaust gas leaks. S-O-S Coolant Analysis is important to assure product quality and component life. Machine Profiles The Machine Profiles machine description, oil sampling procedures, filter inspection and wear element sources for all components of Caterpillar machines. This information is particularly useful for S-O-S analysis. Machine Profiles are available on the CD rom YERC0351.

Customer Support Agreements (CSA) Contacts: Mike McGee, Parts & Service Marketing-CSA Team (5-4017) Dennis Bradshaw, Parts & Service Marketing-CSA Team (5-4514) General:A Customer Support Agreement (CSA) is any agreement between a customer and dealership for the dealership to handle some or all of the customers equipment management needs. Agreements are developed jointly between the dealer and customer for a mutually agreed upon scope of coverage, duration, and priced at a fixed cost per service, per hour of operation, or some other variable. CSA services offered by dealers today include a wide range of services: Asset Management Agreements (Comprehensive asset management services provided by the dealer) Maintenance & Repair Agreements (Coverage for maintenance and repair services for all machine components) Component Agreements (Coverage for a limited number of components) Preventive Maintenance Agreements (Agreements to perform all preventive maintenance activities) At the end of 1999, it is estimated that dealers had over 70,000 CSAs in effect worldwide. This number is expected to grow to over 80,000 by the end of 2000. Customer Support Agreements are proving to be valuable marketplace tools that help to satisfy customers needs to transfer some or all of their equipment management activities and risk to outside suppliers. A CSA leverages the unique capabilities of dealers, and provides incremental dealer parts & service revenue. By meeting the needs of the customer, a CSA also helps increase dealer PINS. CSAs are the ideal tool to help dealers capture service and parts business. Dealers generally seek to sell a CSA at the time of machine sale. This helps to minimize dealer risk on unknown used equipment. Product Groups can support the growth of CSAs by: Designing serviceability into machines during the concept and development stages of the NPI
