Since 1957, Wells Concrete has been building and installing structural and architectural precast products, currently producing nearly 5 million sq. ft. per year. nPCa Leadership academyLet’s congratulate Chris Reese on his selection to the “2019 Leadership NCPA”. Pre-cast professionals across the U.S. competed for a few coveted spots. The year-long program is designed to sharpen participants’ skills by providing management training, industry association experience and networking opportunities. Among the key takeaways are an understanding

of NPCA operations, knowledge of industry issues and a sense of industry pride. — Dale Neal

easi-Set adds experienced Building Licensee to Upper Midwest Quality Precast, Inc., based in Kalamazoo, MI, joined the Easi-Set Family of producers in 2018 and began production of Easi-Set Buildings in the Upper-Midwest. Although Quality has produced precast concrete buildings through the years, the decision was made to team up with Easi-Set to help take that product line to a “new level”.

Chris Reese, Easi-Set’s Engineer, completed production training over the summer and Jeremy Smith attended Quality Precast’s open house for their new office and production plant on October 5th. This state-of-the-art facility will enable them to meet the production needs to increase building output. It seems this increase in capacity came at the right time, as Quality has already sold 9 Easi-Set Buildings in their short time on-board. — Jeremy Smith

J-J Hook® Connection System – “Meeting today, tomorrow’s MaSH Standards” 2018 has been a most successful year for our J-J Hook® barrier connection system MASH testing program. Easi-Set’s signature creation offers the only true load transfer connection system in the industry. Easi-Set has now successfully tested to the AASHTO MASH TL3 specification and has received FHWA Letters of Eligibility for four (4) J-J Hook® barriers:1. Two (2) - MASH TL3 Free-Standing barriers FHWA B300 & B3072. One (1) - MASH TL3 Bolt-Down barrier – B52B3. One (1) – MASH TL3 Pin-Down barrier – B52CWith the AASHTO/FHWA MASH Implementation

requirements rapidly approaching at the end of 2019, Easi-Set has been diligently submitting product approval requests to State DOT’S. 34 State/Provincial DOT’s have approved the J-J Hooks MASH restrained design and 17 States have approved the J-J Hooks MASH free-standing design. In targeted important markets, Easi-Set has recently received approval from the Florida DOT and received notification of forthcoming approval from Texas DOT and California DOT. — Art Miles

Work Management and Collaboration improvement System Earlier this year, Easi-Set launched new software, Smartsheet, as a continued effort to improve our Seamless Engineering Support Program. Smartsheet allows us to simplify new project requests while making submitting, scheduling, and tracking projects more efficient. The software allows our licensees to see and track real-time changes on their projects. This program will streamline the engineering process and allow full collaboration of information with licensees on all project elements. — Chris Reese

Roman Stone – nPCa Plant Certified for 15 Years During the 2018 The Precast Show, Roman Stone Construction Company was recognized and honored for their 15 continuous years as a NPCA Plant-Certified Company. Roman Stone, located in Bay Shore, Long Island, NY is a licensed producer of the successful J-J Hooks temporary precast barrier. During the presentation, Ty Gable, President, NPCA, stated, “NPCA is proud to recognize Roman Stone Construction Company for its dedication to the program and to manufacturing quality precast concrete products.” Roman Stone has been continuously operating in the State of New York for over 115 years, beginning with their first precast product – concrete conduit. — Moffette Tharpe

SlenderWall Panel Receives 60-minute Fire Rating In August of this year, a 10-foot by 10-foot SlenderWall panel with a 1 ½-inch thermal break, 6-inches of closed-cell foam insulation and one layer of Type-X gypsum board, met the conditions of acceptance for ASTM E-119-18a Standard Fire Test Method for Evaluation of Fire Propagation Characteristics of Exterior Non-Load Bearing Wall Assemblies Containing Combustible Components and ASTM E2226-15b Standard Practice for Application of Hose Stream to achieve a 60-minute fire resistance rating.The test was performed in a furnace located within the Intertek fire test laboratory in York, PA. During the test, the gypsum board side of the panel was subjected to temperatures exceeding 1800°F. Immediately after the panel had met the 60-minute fire resistance temperature-rise requirements, the full panel was immediately subjected to a fire-hose water-stream for 60-seconds to identify if any cracking through-the-panel had occurred.A SlenderWall panel, with the same configuration, also meets the requirements of NFPA 285 Standard Fire Test Method for Evaluation of Fire Propagation Characteristics of Exterior Non-Load-Bearing Wall Assemblies Containing Combustible Component — Moffette Tharpe

Building the Largest Yielding domestic Water Supply Wells in nYAfter decades of searching for high-quality, affordable water, the town of New Windsor was fortunate to discover a significant aquifer. Three deep water supply wells were developed, each yielding more than 1,000 gallons per minute for a daily total of 6.4 million gallons, twice the town’s demand, supplying the town’s 23,000 residents and those in neighboring Newburgh. A 70’ x 105’ water filtration building and three 22’ x 28’ well houses, all manufactured by Oldcastle Infrastructure, make up the new system. “The town is proud to say that these wells are no doubt the largest yielding domestic water supply wells in the state of New York,” adds Dick McGoey, PE, with New Windsor based Mcgoey Hauser and Edsall D.P.C. — Dale Neal

a Cape Cod town invests in easi-Set RestroomsThe town of Dennis, Mass. has been updating its beachfront properties with Easi-Set Restrooms. “They chose precast concrete as a solution to withstand the coastal environment they face on all fronts,” says Frank Dimando, a sales/project manager with Shea Concrete Products. new Jersey is the home of two of the latest SlenderWall projects to open.The new Embassy Suites in Berkeley Heights, NJ opened for business in the fall of 2018. The 176 room, 8-story features over 52,000 sq. ft. of two-toned SlenderWall precast cladding. Nine on the Hudson, a luxury residential hi-rise, sits right on the Hudson River with sweeping views of mid-town Manhattan. The premier 14 story, 278 unit, K. Hovnanian Enterprises development in Port Imperial was designed by Marchetto Higgins Stieve. 466 SlenderWall panels make-up the sleek modern facade. Both projects were manufactured by Smith-Midland. — Dale Neal

SeMa Receives Order for 76,000 LF of J-J Hooks Barrier Recently, Kiewit Corporation awarded SEMA Precast, Brighton, CO an order totaling 76,000 LF of J-J Hooks temporary precast concrete barriers for their $1.2 billion Central I-70 highway project in East Denver. The order consists of 20,000 LF of the J-J Hooks MASH TL3 tested design containing the 18” J-Hook and 56,000 LF of the NCHRP 350 TL3 tested barrier with 12” J-Hook. The 18” J-Hook can connect directly to the 12” J-Hook. To fill the order and meet the aggressive schedule, SEMA purchased 15 new double-cavity forms from a local steel fabricator, H&H Metals. Delivery of the barrier began about two months ago at an average daily rate of 1,080 LF. — Moffette Tharpe
