Section 31 BREAD AND SCONES

“The Great Nowra Bake-off”

Entry Forms: To be in by no later than 5.00pm Wednesday 8th February Exhibits: To be in by no later than 10.00am Thursday 9th February 31020 Scones – Plate of six - Made using the recipe of well known Show Society exhibitor, Life Member of Nowra Show Society and author of “My Favourite Recipes”, Mrs Voni Muller. Voni made these scones very Sunday morning for decades for her family to enjoy for breakfast. Voni first entered cooking at local Shows at the age of fourteen and has continued to not only enter competitions, but has gone on to teach and judge preserves, cakes and scones at local agricultural Shows. Recipe to be followed: Plain Scones 15 minutes preparation 12 minutes cooking 3 cups SR Flour 1 tsp salt 1 heaped tsp baking powder 1 cup cream ¾ cup milk ½ cup water Pre-heat over to 2000 C. Line a large baking tray with baking paper. Sift flour, salt and baking powder into bowl. Add cream, milk and water and mix to a soft dough, preferably with a large butter knife (if too moist add a bit more flour). Put on to floured surface, knead well and roll out to about ½ inch thickness. Cut into small circles using a cookie cutter (be sure to dust rim with flour so scone mix does not stick to cutter). Place scones next to each other (so they are just touching) on a tray lined with baking paper. Brush top of each scone lightly with milk (optional). Bake in hot oven (2000C) for about 12 minutes. Scones will be slightly golden on top when cooked. Place on cooling rack to cool and cover with a tea towel. Scones are best eaten warm from the oven however they also freeze well in an airtight container or wrapped in plastic. NB: If scones are being made for Show competition they are not to be touching on the tray when you cook them. First Prize: $50.00 and a copy of “My Favourite Recipes” + Ribbon Second Prize: $20.00 and a copy of “My Favourite Recipes”

DETAILS RICH FRUIT CAKE COMPETITION

The winner of the Rich Fruit Cake competition at Nowra Show will then proceed to the Zone Final judging to be held at the Group Meeting in November. The Zone winner will then go on to compete at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Cakes must be uncut.

Recipe: 250g (8oz) Sultanas, 250g (8oz) chopped raisins, 250g (8oz) currants, 125g (4oz) chopped mixed peel, 90g (3oz) chopped red glace cherries, 90g (3oz) chopped blanched almonds, 1/3 cup sherry or brandy, 250g (8oz) plain flour, 60g (2oz) self raising flour, ¼ teaspoon grated nutmeg, ½ teaspoon ground ginger, ½ teaspoon ground cloves, 250g (8oz) butter, 250g (8oz) soft brown sugar, ½ teaspoon lemon essence or finely grated lemon rind, ½ teaspoon almond essence, ½ teaspoon vanilla essence, 4 large eggs. Mix together the fruits and nuts and sprinkle with sherry or brandy. Cover and leave for at least one hour, but preferably overnight. Sift the flours and spices, cream butter and sugar with the essences. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then alternatively add fruit and flour mixes. Mix thoroughly. The mixture should be stiff enough to support a wooden spoon. Place the mixture into a prepared tin no larger than 20cm (8 inches) and bake in a slow oven for approx 3-4 hours.
