NOW YOU KNOW
Charles Harrison
Industrial designer Charles Harrison made
profound, long-term contributions to contemporary design practice. We know his
products, but few know of him.
Charles Harrison, an industrial designer, freelanced for Sears Roebuck because
company policy barred the hiring of African Americans. It was during this time, he
redesigned the View Master toy into a plastic model suitable for children. Fortunately, the
company changed its policy in 1961 and Harrison was formally hired. Remaining at the company for 32 years, he ultimately led the company’s design team and was Sears’
first African American executive.
Harrison is credited with developing portable hair dryers, hedge clippers, sewing machines of varied complexity, steam irons, riding lawn
mowers, portable turntables, blenders, circular florescent lightbulbs, electric frying
pans, consumer power tools, coffee percolators, fondue pots, toasters, stoves, hearing aids, band saws, cordless electric shavers and the first plastic trash can—
despite his struggle with dyslexia.
Harrison was one of the last to leave Sears; his design team dissolved in 1993.
He moved into teaching at a number of Chicago-area schools including the University of Illinois, Columbia College
and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2006, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement
Award from FocusOnDesign and personal recognition from The Industrial Designers Society of America. Harrison received the
Lifetime Achievement National Design Award by Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution in October 2008 —
the first African American to receive the honor. Sadly, Harrison passed away
November 29, 2018.

The Bail Project—a new non-profit organization is designed to combat mass incarceration by disrupting the money bail system one person at a time. The Bail Project looks to work to reduce the human suffering caused by unaffordable cash bail and building on the work of grassroots groups and movements for decarceration and racial justice. In addition to posting bail, The Bail Project seeks to partner with local advocacy groups, collect stories and data from sites and work with universities to measure the socio-economic impacts of unaffordable cash bail with the goal of informing legislative reform. Bail Disruptors are community members committed to racial and economic justice. New bail disruptors are needed to support our growing team on the ground. They first and foremost post bail for those who cannot afford to purchase their freedom. Applicants will need to work non-traditional hours and willing to work independently as well as in collaborative teams, demonstrate an interest and experience in racial and social justice or criminal defense. Have access to a reliable vehicle, excellent organizational abilities, strong decision-making and communication skills, basic ability in Excel and data entry or willingness to learn. Candidates should also be able to handle multiple projects. Interested applicants should submit a resume and cover letter by email to [email protected] with “Bail Disruptor-Spokane” in the subject line. Applications will not be processed without a cover letter. For more information, visit www.bailproject.org
