The D.C. area gets into the back-to-school spirit with some entertaining heritage events. History has never been so fun!

Want to see men in skirts throwing heavy objects? Then the Virginia Scottish Games and Festival is for you. Learn about Scottish culture from competitions involving tossing Braemar stones, weights, hammers, cabers, and sheaves. Join “King Henry VIII” and his court at the Maryland Renaissance Festival for com-bat jousting, feasting, and all the pageantry

…Just about anything! Seasonal produce, freshly butchered meat, and much more are for sale at local farmers’ markets. Summer is the optimal time to buy that quart of juicy peaches or stock up on steak for a barbecue on the grills at Rock Creek Park.

Eastern Market is the city’s premier market. Located on Capitol Hill, it features hundreds of the area’s best artists as well as an open-air food market with produce from the region. Be sure to duck into the indoor South Hall Market where 13 merchants sell meats, poultry, seafood, produce, pasta, baked goods, flowers, and cheeses. (225 7th St., SE; open weekends, 8-5)

There is no more patriotic party than the one D.C. throws for the birth of our nation. Celebrate Independence Day all day long with several events on or near the Mall. Birthday cake is optional!

Stop by the National Archives to see the original Declaration of Independence. Haven’t read it? Listen to a dramatic reading of this important document at 10:00 a.m. Stick around for family-friendly activities including appearances by some of our favorite “Founding Fathers” starting at 11:00 a.m.

found in the year 1520. Try your hand at games of skill and sport for all ages, pick up a unique handmade craft, and indulge in Renaissance-inspired fare. Weekends in August and September starting August 23 in Crownsville, MD.

Experience an authentic 18th-century fair at Mount Vernon with dozens of America’s finest craftspeople demonstrat-ing and selling their wares. The Colonial Market & Fair also includes fire-eating, sword-swallowing, puppet and magic shows, music, and “General Washington” overseeing lively Revolutionary War military drills. September 20-21 in Mount Vernon, VA.

Other markets of note include the Fresh-Farm Markets in six locations around the city, including one near the White House. These markets sell pasture-raised meats, artisan cheeses, milk and yogurt, fruits and vegetables, breads, preserves and more. (White House location - 810 Vermont Ave; open Thurs. 11-2:30)

The U.S. Department of Agriculture holds a weekly farmers’ market in its parking lot with 14 farmers and vendors from nearby states selling fruits and vegetables, herbs, prepared foods, baked goods, honey, & other products. Live entertainment from 11-1. (12th St. & Independence

Ave, SW; open Fri., 10-2.)

At 11:45 make your way outside to Constitution Avenue to see America’s National Independence Day Parade with marching bands, floats, and all things red, white, and blue. The festivities start at 7th Street, NW.

The traditional “A Capitol Fourth” concert by the National Symphony Orchestra, a 90-minute free musical extravaganza, entertains on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol at 8:00 p.m. Hear Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture with real canons while the major fireworks show on the Mall begins, usually around 9:10 p.m.

National Air & Space MuseumSpirit & Opportunity: 10 Years Roving Across MarsThis exhibition celebrates the amazing images and achievements of the two Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, which were launched in the summer of 2003 and bounced down safely on Mars after a harrowing six-minute descent through the thin atmosphere. Spirit traveled almost five miles over more than six years. Opportunity has traveled more than 23 miles over an ongoing mission that has reached ten years. Through September 14, 2014

Hillwood Estate, Museum & GardensCartier: Marjorie Merriweather Post’s Dazzling GemsOne of Cartier’s most important clients, Mar-jorie Merriweather Post commissioned exquisite jewelry sets, fashionable ac-cessories, and finely-crafted jeweled frames. Following their return from the Grand Palais in Paris where they dazzled in an exhibition, jewelry and objects from Hillwood’s Cartier collection offer a notable perspective on the important role that Cartier played in the life and style of this American icon.June 7 – December 31, 2014

National Museum of Natural History MuseumOnce There Were Billions: Vanished Birds of North AmericaAn amazing diversity of birds once inhabited the forests and plains of North America, but starting around 400 years ago species began to disappear. A notable extinction occurred in 1914, with the death of Martha the passenger pigeon, the last member of a species that once filled America’s skies. Specimens and illustrations of passenger pigeons and other birds reveal the fragile connec-tions between species and their environment. June 24, 2014 – October 2015

National Portrait GalleryOne Life: Grant and Lee: “It is well that war is so terrible . . .”The Civil War rivalry be-tween generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee is one of the most memo-rable in American military history. Lee was a polished and seemingly invincible Confederate commander until he encountered Grant, a rough-and-tumble upstart, in the Virginia campaigns of 1864 and 1865. This exhibition considers the personal lives and profes-sional rivalries of Grant and Lee through paintings, photographs, documents, and objects.July 4, 2014 – May 31, 2015

Adams Morgan Adams Morgan is one of the city’s most culturally and culinarily rich neighborhoods. By day, enjoy coffee shops and used book and record stores. By night, partake in the ample eating, drinking, and dancing options along 18th Street.

Anacostia Anacostia is home to some of the city’s most beautiful parks, a growing commercial district, and some of the city’s most innova-tive galleries along Martin Luther King Ave and Good Hope Road. Also make sure to check out the Frederick Douglass House.

Chinatown/Penn Quarter Few areas are growing as quickly as the Chinatown/Penn Quarter areas. At present, they are home to museums, hotels, and a thriving restaurant scene, hosting local talent like José Andrés and a slew of New York chain restaurants.

Dupont Circle The centrally-located neighborhood is home to incredible museums, historic homes, embassies, and a wide array of res-taurants and bars. Both Dupont and nearby 17th Street also are the heart of the city’s vibrant gay community.

Georgetown The neighborhood offers opportunities for shopping along M St. and Wisconsin Ave., walking along the waterfront, and getting lost along the beautiful houses and parks north of M St.

Glover Park Up Wisconsin Avenue from Georgetown lies Glover Park, a quaint neighborhood filled with fine eating establishments includ-ing barbeque at Rockland’s and indian at Heritage India.

H Street NE The former commercial quarter has been transformed into one of the city’s most active entertainment districts. From the Joy of Motion Dance Center to Little Miss Whiskey’s, the venues cater to those seek-ing some culture or just a fun night out on the town. Shuttle service to H St. is available from Union Station.

THINGS TO DO

Exquisite art on the walls or priceless artifacts under

glass are thrilling to see, but for kids those traditional experiences are a hard sell. Fortunately, many museums in D.C. include complimentary discovery kits for youngsters, and some, like the following cultural institutions, make hands-on learning an art – or science – form.

For the younger set, make your way to National Harbor and the National Children’s Museum where children can dress up, learn about other cultures, pretend to drive, cook, or run a shop, and even cast a vote in an election. Story time, original short plays, and crafts will keep your kids busy and entertained.

Future architects should head to the National Building Museum’s Building Zone. Children ages 2-6 can build a tower with huge blocks, drive a play bulldozer, and explore a life-size playhouse while they learn to interact with others and solve problems.

with kidsChildren’s Guide

Teens can immerse themselves in hands-on science at the Marian Koshland Science Center. Learn about such di-verse topics as climate change, how the brain works, how to eat healthy, and the intricacies of light bulbs. Don’t miss the “Age in 3 Minutes” exhibit where visitors experience the physical and sensory changes related to aging.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History offers young visitors Q?rius, a lab for teens and tweens, and Qurius jr., a discovery room for elementary school ages. Both encourage exploration of science and nature through hands-on activities.

Do you have a budding Katie Couric? Let her try her hand at reporting at the Newseum. The NBC Interactive News Room gives visitors the chance to play the role of a reporter or photographer. Just watch out for those looming deadlines!

Young artists will want to go to the Smithsonian’s Freer and Sackler Galleries for ImaginAsia, a program for ages 8-14 where gallery guides take families through exhibitions. Af-terwards, families return to the classroom to create their own unique work of art inspired by those in the galleries.

If your kids miss their backyard swing set while they’re on vacation, give them the 23-foot-high version – the flying trapeze at Trapeze School New York, Washington D.C. Sign up for a class, and, if you can master the timing of the trick, by the end of the two-hour session you’ll fly through the air and be caught by a professional catcher – just like at the circus! Participants must be six years or older. Reserve a spot in advance at: washingtondc.trapezeschool.com.4th St, SE and Tingey St; Navy Yard Station on the Green Line

Whether your kids still sing “The Wheels on the

Bus” or they’re old enough to be bugging you for their own set of wheels, the D.C. area has several spinning rides to make them all dizzyingly happy.

See D.C. from a new view! The Capital Wheel is a 180-foot ferris wheel that soars above the Potomac River waterfront in National Harbor, giving riders views of the U.S. Capitol, Washington Monu-ment, and surrounding areas. Whirling around since spring, it is the latest major attraction in the metropolitan area. While you’re there, give the Carousel at National Harbor a spin. The Americana-themed carousel features a herd of whimsical creatures on the waterfront near a playground, toddler play area, and picnic tables.

Possibly the most popular mer-ry-go-round in the region, the Smithsonian’s Carousel on the National Mall is a rite of passage for tourists and locals alike. It’s located in front of the castle building and is the only functioning carousel in the city.

One of just a handful of solar-powered carousels in the world, the Speedwell Founda-tion Conservation Carousel at the National Zoo showcases 58 different custom-carved species. In addition to animals on exhibit at the zoo, the carousel includes examples of endangered species. A former amusement park from the late 19th century is the backdrop for the famous Dentzel Carousel in Glen Echo Park, MD. The charm-ing attraction was made in 1921 and still operates with musical accompaniment from its original organ. This historic attraction is maintained by the National Park Service.

Dino’s Grotto

Dino’s Grotto (1914 9th St, NW)

A revamped version of an old city favorite from Cleveland Park, Dino’s Grotto in Shaw offers rustic Italian dishes prepared from food raised and produced by small farms that follow sustainable practices. Chef Dean Gold, formerly the buyer for wine, cheese and specialty foods at Whole Food Market, and his partner Kay Zimmerman opened this new venture in May. Fans are already talking about the wild boar and creamy burratta.

Mazagan (2901 Columbia Pike, Arlington, VA)

Mazagan brings modern Moroccan and Mediterra-nean cuisine to Arlington, Virginia. The bastilla, phyllo filled with chicken, almonds, eggs, nutmeg and topped with powdered sugar and cinnamon, has a devoted following. Also popular are the tagines prepared daily in clay pots over wood fire. Opened since May, Mazagan also features a Hookah lounge with fruit flavored tobaccos separated from the main restaurant by a glass enclosure.

Bread Furst (4434 Connecticut Ave, NW)

A James Beard nominee, founder of Marvelous Market and Breadline, and unof-ficial father of the whole grain bread movement, Mark Furstenberg opened his Bread Furst in May with pastries, breads, soups, sal-ads, sandwiches, coffee, and house-made sodas. A neigh-borhood bakery, Bread Furst bakes its baguettes every four hours to guarantee the freshest bread in the city.

Compass Rose Bar & Kitchen (1346 T St, NW)

After traveling the world for three years, owner Rose Previte returned to D.C. and created a menu befitting a tavern inspired by interna-tional street food. Khachapu-ri (cheese-filled bread from the Republic of Georgia) is served next to Lebanese lamb kefta and pupusas from El Salvador. Take a trip around the world in one meal and wash it down with a unique cocktail at this new restaurant in the 14th Street corridor.
