whomwethinkis“holy.”PerhapsitisadeceasedpersonwhoselifewassoexemplarythattheChurchhasdeclaredthemasaint–MotherTeresa,oracourageousmartyr,SaintJoseph,theBlessedMother,orourpatronsaint.Itmayevenbealivingpersonwhomweadmire–apersonwhohasshowngreatfaithduringtimesoftrial.Wetendtoknowaholypersonwhenweseehim,orher.

HowdidJesustalkaboutholiness?Thesearesomeofthethingshetoldhisdisciplesintoday’sGospel:Whensomeonestrikesyouonyourrightcheek,turntheotheroneaswell;Loveyourneighborandyourenemies;prayforthosewhopersecuteyou;shouldanyonewantyoutogoonemile,gotwomilesinstead.

Itisabitofamixofthingstodo,andthingstonotdo.Intheend,hesortofsummarizesallofthisbytellinghisdisciplestobeperfectjustasyourheavenlyFatherisperfect.JesuslivedinfullcommunionwithGod,andheexpectedhisdisciplestodothesame.Indeed,heasksustodothesame.Itisouruniversalvocation:AllChristiansinanystateorwalkoflifearecalledtothefullnessofChristianlifeandtotheperfectionofcharity.Allarecalledtoholiness(CCC2013).

Whatheasksofusisnotimpossible,forGodcommandswhatwearecapableofdoing(Cf.,Deut30:11).Granted,wecannotdoitwithouthishelp,butthereisnothingsetbeforeusthatwecannotachievewithhisgrace(Cf.Mt11:30,1John5:3).Andinthematterofholiness–whichisalwaysaprocess–wehavetheHolySpirittoguideus.PaulwritestotheCorinthians,DoyounotknowthatyouarethetempleofGod,andthattheSpiritofGoddwellsinyou?Eachoneofus,byourverybaptism,issanctified[madeholy]bytheindwellingoftheHolySpirit.WearetemplesofGod,belongingtoChrist,andinwhomChristdwells.

AswepreparetoreceiveChristintoourbodies,transformingusforthesakeofourselvesandtheworld,mayweembracethiscalltoholinesswithourwholeheart.ForweareindeedtemplesinwhomtheHolyOnedwells,andwearesanctifiedinthislifesoastobeperfectinthenext.
