Howzat the most- anticipated drama of the year, HOWZAT KERRY PACKER’S WAR is how legendary media mogul Kerry
Packer, played by Lachy Hulme fought war by secretly signing up 50 of the world’s greatest players from across the world of cricket to form a breakaway competition. Packer took on the Australian Cricket Establishment and MCCC in a war over TV rights and turned the cricket world upside down by creating ‘World Series Cricket’. It was John Cornell (Abe Forsythe), better known as Paul Hogan’s sidekick Strop, who brought the idea of reinventing cricket broadcasts to Packer. The media mag-nate jumped at the idea but it set him on a collision course with cricketing boards in Australia and the UK. It started on a breezy afternoon in 1977. In an Australian suburban living room. John ’Stroop’ Cornell is watching replays from the Ashes Series with his clients—comedian Paul Hogan and Australian test legend Dennis Lillee. In the course of casual conversation, Lillee lets slip that he and the rest of the test side is making as much money from cricket as the “guy pushing the sight screen”. John Cornell can’t believe his ears. “What are they doing?” he says in utter frustration “They got this great game in their hands, and these world champions. And they’ve got NO idea what they’ve got! They should be selling stars like you.” Lillee sips his can of beer, stares straight ahead at the screen, and resignedly deepens “tell me about it.”
But the conversation sets alight an idea in Cornell’s head: as self-promoted, self-produced cricket show case held outside the game’s existing structure. But how to make it work? “We need someone with deep pockets….and big balls,” he says. Along came Media Barron Kerry Packer head of Channel 9 Flushed with cash, Packer signed the best of the best, taking advantage of household names who were deemed to be underpaid: Dennis Lillee, Ian Chappell, Greg Chappell, Jeff Thom-son, Rod Marsh, David Hookes as well as Tony Greig and broadcaster Richie Benaud. Shut out by the cricketing fraternity, he secured VFL park in suburban Melbourne and set his sights on night games. Packer knew the players, who had been underpaid for years, were on the verge of rebellion against the cricket powers. His rebel games clashed head-on with the official’s test matches, and the war was on. Polishing an idea by John Cornell (Abe Forsythe), Packer fought a bitter two-year legacy of pride, in the traditional nature of the poorly paid game. The result changed the game of cricket forever. Howzat also stars Damon Gameau as Greg Chappell, Brendan Cowell as Rodney Marsh, Clayton Watson as Ian Chappell, Mathew Le Nevez as Dennis Lillee, Richard Davies as David Hookes and Alex England as Tony Greig. Australia in the late 1970’s Bitter after being refused exclusive broad-casting rights to the gentlemen’s game in Australia, media mogul Kerry Packer launches his own breakaway, renegade competition and sparks a war with the world’s cricket governing bodies. We all know how it ends – World Series Cricket is a success and goes on to revolutionise the game – but Howzat! Is a glimpse into the Packer camp during those turbulent times.

ECKSTEIN’S FOURTH WORLD TITLE AS NORTHCLIFFE CLAIMS POINTSCORE TROPHY
Northcliffe’s Shannon Eckstein has produced one of the finest moments of his Stella career to win a fourth World Oceanman
Title at Rescue 2012 on the final day of Rescue 2012 in Adelaide today to emulate the great Trevor Hendy.
Hendy is regarded as the greatest of Australia’s surf lifesaving Ironmen, having won four Oceanman (the International Life Sav-ing Federation’s version of Ironman) world titles and five Australian Ironman championships.
Eckstein, 29, has now won four Worlds and four Australian Championships and will chase a fifth to equal Hendy again at the 2013 Aussies at North Kirra next April, before setting his sights on the Coolangatta Gold – the race either he or Hendy has won.
He added title number four in fine style to his previous wins in Italy in 2004, Germany in 2010 and Egypt in 2012 and is now well on the way to challenging Hendy as Australia’s greatest.
The inspirational Northcliffe captain also spearheaded his team to the coveted World Championship pointscore with the Aus-tralian champion club overcoming a massive 400 point deficit to beat Italian club Rane Rosse Aqvasport, who dominated the Pool Rescue section earlier in the week.
But today was Eckstein and Northcliffe’s day and the maroon and white caps, minus swimmers Miranda Bell and New Zealand Olympian Andrew McMillan (both out injured) were front and centre in most major events.
In the end it was Northcliffe who carried off the Kevin Weldon Trophy on 775pts from Rane Rosse Aqvasport (ITA) 682 and DLRG Halle-Saalekreis (GER) 526, while Sydney Branch club Wanda 802 were comfortable winners in the Youth pointscore over fellow NSW club Terrigal 582 with Northcliffe (304) third.
“I grew up idolising Trevor and watching him on television and I have always held him in high esteem,” said Eckstein, who was quick to hold up the four fingers as he crossed the line.
“To win a fourth world title has been a goal of mine and 10 years in the making. I have worked hard for this and will now set myself for this year’s Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Series, then the Australian Championships and the Coolangatta Gold.
“They only have the world titles every two years so you have to wait two years to get it back (off me).
Even Eckstein admitted the conditions, including long wades across the sandbanks, the choppy surf and chilly 20knot winds, presen“It was tough going out there, I knew what I had to do and picked my moment on the board and worked the runners on the way back to get the most out of the board before going as hard as I could on the swim,” said Eckstein.
“I wasn’t going to let up until I crossed the line.”
Eckstein trailed Mooloolaba’s Kendrick Louis after the opening ski leg in the choppy, wind-swept Christies Beach conditions, but paddled into the lead around the board buoys and was never headed.
He then produced a swim leg Ky Hurst would be proud off, to push as hard as he could in the most dominant performance of a World Championship fortnight.
ted their own challenges and he pushed himself to the limit.
He powered away to win comfortably from Northcliffe team mate, former Sunshine Coast junior Mitch Miller with Mooloolaba’s former Sydney Northern Beaches product Matt Poole a close up third.
MOIR ADDS WORLD CROWN TO COOLANGATTA GOLD
Today’s Ironwoman went to Coolangatta Gold champion, North Burleigh’s Brodie Moir from Maroubra’s emerging star Tara Coleman, with the fast finishing Coolangatta Gold and Australian champion Courtney Hancock, nursing a twisted ankle, taking third.
Moir beat a red-hot field that included fellow Coolangatta Gold and Australian Ironwoman champion Courtney Hancock, Na-tional Teams Ironwoman champion Kristyl Smith; her fellow Northcliffe Ironwomen Bonnie Hancock and Harriet Brown as well as Manly’s Under 19 Australian champion Devon Halligan, team mate Candice Falzon and Mooloolaba’s Allira Richardson.
Moir admitted she couldn’t believe she had won the world crown.
“I have looked up to all these girls for so long and to add the world championship to the Coolangatta Gold in one month is amazing – beyond my wildest dreams,” said Moir.
“They have all pushed me to be as good as I can be and today I just had to make the most of the conditions, especially with the long runs in and out of the water.
“I made sure I capitalised on my lead after the ski and I knew if I led off the board I could hopefully hang on in the swim and I did. I guess the world title will look pretty good on the resume.”
In one of the most exciting finishes of the day, it was Poole who hung on to give Mooloolaba a last gasp victory over North-cliffe and Bronte in the Oceanman Relay (one swimmer, one ski paddler, one board paddler, one runner) while Manly (Naomi Flood, Devon Halligan, Candice Falzon and Mieke Kassulke won the Oceanwoman Relay from Northcliffe and Mount Maun-ganui.
In a major tactical ploy, Mooloolaba coach Michael King decided to use Poole as the final runner.
Under the ILS rules the final member can tag in the water and the champion Ironman swam to within five metres of the final turning buoy and tagged swimmer Kendrick Louis.
Northcliffe’s swimmer, surf race champion Dev Lahey then tagged his final runner, Kiwi Kevin Morrison, who took off after Poole, pushing him right to the line.
“It was a sneaky tactic and it paid off,” said jelly-legged Poole after his ding-dong battle.
“With both Kendrick and I coming off the Ironman and being tired we decided it was probably best to share the swimming duties half and half and it paid off.”
Meanwhile in the final events of the day Newport’s beach star Jake Lynch and Kurrawa queen Melissa Howard both claimed beach doubles – adding the flags to their sprint titles.
Lynch, who’s father and coach Martin won the Masters beach flags, added to his beach sprint win (dead heat with Jordan Caldow) for a rare world championship double while the eight-time Australian beach flags champion Howard added to her break through sprint win.

The 2012 World Championships were held in Adelaide, South Aus-
tralia, from November 24th to the 9th of December 2012. With
teams from across the world converging on two of Adelaide’s
beautiful greens, Lockleys and Holdfast Bay clubs co-hosting 2
weeks of what was fierce and hot competition.
Australia launched its campaign at the biennial 27-nation World
Championships warfare with a star-studded cast of battle-
hardened gladiators and a mix of youthful assassins . The Aus-
sie team affectionately dubbed ‘The Jackaroos’ the squad
entered the competition in the prime position to mount a
successful campaign. The Jackaroos came in the 2012 World
Championships the defending champions after they pillaged
the silverware from New Zealand soil four years ago.
With the Men’s number two being from the host nation Leif Shelby
made an impressive start to his campaign in Adelaide. Shelby
had reinforced his spot on top of the consecutive wins ladder,
with his clinical victory against Commonwealth Games gold
medallist Paul Foster, from Scotland, in the second rubber all
that separates the two of them after the
first two days of competition.
At the end of each days play participants
would move in from the greens to the
club talk over the days competition. Ca-
maraderie of the competitors coming
together with other teams from other
countries and sharing a drink it was like a
miniature United Nations.
The Aussies having whitewashed all eight
encounters on the opening day of com-
petition including six victories against pre-tournament fa-
vourites Scotland and our cross Tasman neighbours New
Zealand, the host nation was well placed to continue its
barnstorming at the Lockleys and Holdfast Bay , but had its
colour lowered early by old-enemy England.
JACKAROOS TOP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Jackaroos have topped the tables at the World Championships
Australia has claimed the overall winners' trophies on the final day
of the World Championships after clinching its fourth and
fifth gold medals in electrifying circumstances.
World number four Karen Murphy claimed the sport's most
coveted prize after prevailing in the blue-ribbon women's
singles final this afternoon, and in the process assured the host
nation retained the revered Taylor Trophy, awarded to the
overall women's winner of the 27-nation event, ahead of New
Zealand and Scotland.
It was a herculean effort by the Jackaroos vice-captain, who
was pitted against pre-tournament favourite and defending
titleholder Val Smith, from New Zealand, in the gold-medal
11
Australia's Leif Selby also picked up the corresponding medal this evening in the men's event, with the world number two edging past Canada's Australian-
based Ryan Bester by a slender 2 shot margin, 21-19.
The pair couldn't be split after qualifying rounds, with both undefeated from 11 rubbers and even on shots for and against in opposite sides of the draw, and
it proved to be a titanic tussle in the final decider.
For Selby, who went on an 18 month sabbatical after the Delhi Commonwealth Games, the elusive World Championships medal sat as the only notable omis-
sion from his mantelpiece.
Again, only a solitary Australian has completed the feat in the men's singles, after national coach Steve Glasson OAM took the honours at Scotland in 2004.
The result also earned the contingent the Leonard Trophy, for overall men's winner, on the back of a gold medals in the men's singles fours, and silver to the
pairs and triples.
The Jackaroos complete the event with five gold and two silver medals from eight disciplines and will now commence its preparations for the 2014 Glasgow
Commonwealth Games.
World gold for Peackock, Burnett and Archer
Scotland’s bowlers have won a third gold medal at the World Championships in Adelaide, as BBC UK reports.
David Peacock, Darren Burnett and Greame Archer triumphed in the
men’s triples with a 13-12 win over Australia.
On the penultimate day of the competition, the result puts them second
overall in the medals table with three gold and three bronze.
The victory also means it is Peacock’s third successive triples world title.
“It ‘s always been my ambition to win a world title, “ said Archer.
“To come to here, play against Australia and win is pretty special.
“I’m delighted for myself and whole Scotland team, we’ve had a phenom-
enal tournament.”
Paul Foster and Alex Marshall won the pairs again defeating hosts Aus-
tralia.
That meant they become the first duo to hold the indoor and outdoor
titles in the same year, having already secured the PBA indoor pairs championship.
Scotland’s Michelle Cooper , Lynn Stein, Caroline Brown and Margaret Letham secured the women’s fours crown after defeating the ladies from Malaysia in
the final.
In the men’s triple final Peacock, Burnett and Archer beat an Australian trio of Wayne Ruediger, Brett Wilkie and Mark Casey.
Despite Australia only scoring on five of the fifteen ends, the result still came down to the wire, with the Scottish team winning by the narrowest of margins.
Archer smashed the jack into the ditch on the final end and Casey's final bullet ended millimetres short.

UniSA supports Ride for a Reason
UniSA is proud to be supporting Cancer Council SA’s Ride for a Reason at the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under
(STDU).
UniSA STDU Ambassador and winner of the 2004 Tour Down Under Patrick Jonker will be leading the charge for UniSA in joining Ride for a Reason in the
BUPA Challenge Tour on Friday January 25.
As patron, Jonker is encouraging all cyclists taking part in the BUPA Challenge Tour to Ride for a Reason
and says being a part of this worthy cause is simple.
“Simply sign up for the BUPA Challenge Tour, regis-ter to Ride for a Reason, and then get to work on rais-ing sponsorships. When you reach your target of just over $1000, your entry into the BUPA Challenge Tour
is free – it’s that easy,” Jonker says.
“I’d encourage the UniSA community and our members in the Team UniSA Supporters Club to get be-
hind this worthy cause and help support those whose lives have been touched by cancer.”
Cancer Council SA Chief Executive Professor Brenda Wilson says Ride for a Reason is a wonderful
community event.
Prof Wilson says she’ll be riding for members of her own family – her father died from Hodgkin’s Lym-phoma a number of years ago and her step-father died from bowel cancer earlier this year. She also
has a number of women friends who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
“Personally I’ll be riding for these people in my life and I’d encourage others who have been touched by
cancer through family and friends to do the same,” Prof Wilson says.
“At the Cancer Council we did some simple number crunching around next year’s Tour and the sad re-ality is that while we’re out riding some 2700 mums, dads, brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles, mates and
sadly kids across Australia will be diagnosed with cancer.
“All funds raised from the ride will support Cancer Council SA’s Beat Cancer Project which has one vi-
sion – to bring us closer than ever to a future without cancer.
“Ride for a Reason is also great for camaraderie and fitness while you ride for someone you love who
has either died from cancer or been diagnosed with cancer. All-round it is a fabulous event.”
Prof Wilson is currently training for the BUPA Challenge Tour to Ride for a Reason.
“I had a great ride up Norton Summit at 5.50am one day last week and all of a sudden Patrick Jonker
was riding next to me,” she says.
“So I increased my pace significantly to keep up with him. It was a bit of a thrill to ride with him as a pa-
tron of the ride and such a prestigious rider.”

Walk yourself happy with be active radio
SA Health is giving South Australians even more incentive to walk themselves happy, with the launch of a new be active digital
radio station.
SA Health’s Chief Project Officer for Physical Activity, Dr Narelle Berry said the dedicated digital radio station will run until 3
November, with a playlist consisting entirely of upbeat walking-pace music and tips to encourage listeners make exercise a
regular part of their routines.
“Walking for 30 minutes most days, whether it’s in one sustained block or in several shorter walks throughout the day, is one
of the best things you can do for your overall wellbeing,” Dr Berry said.
“Music is a fantastic motivator and by tuning in to be active digital radio on their smartphones, listeners can hear music that
has the perfect pace for walking wherever they are.”
Visitors to Adelaide’s Rundle Mall will be able to hear be active radio at a special listening station near Gawler Place today
between 11am and 2pm.
There will be giveaways at the listening station and those who attend will have the chance to win one of ten digital radios.
“Being inactive can have serious repercussions for your health, including higher risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes
and some cancers,” Dr Berry said.
“Walking is one of the most accessible and inexpensive forms of physical exercise and one of the most effective.”
“Active travel is a great way for busy people to incorporate regular physical exercise into their days, whether it’s walking to
work, visiting the shops or collecting their kids from school.”

nounced his retirement. Ponting ended a celebrated 17-year
international career following this week’s Test series decider
against South Africa in Perth.
The prolific right-hander, less than a month shy of his 38th
birthday, admitted his time was up following a barren return
of just 20 runs in the opening two Tests of the series.
Ponting’s decision had set an emotional stage for the last test
at the WACA Ground where Ponting had started 17 years
earlier.
"I didn't have a feeling it was coming," said Clarke.
"Ricky spoke to me after [the second Test against South Afri-
ca in] Adelaide and obviously made his decision over the last
few days.
"The boys are obviously hurting right now. He's been an
amazing player for a long time."
Asked how it might affect the team ahead of the Perth Test,
Clarke added: "It will only give us more inspiration."
Ponting will join level with Steve Waugh's Australian record
of 168 Test caps in Perth before stepping out of the game
with more than 27,000 international runs.
The Tasmanian's list of records runs deep - he is the second-
leading Test runscorer, has captained a record 48 wins in the
longest version while he won two World Cups without losing
a game as skipper.
It was no surprise then that the plaudits quickly flowed for
one of the most fiercely competitive and successful players of
his generation.
South Africa captain Graeme Smith, who will attempt to
crash Ponting's farewell party, revealed his respect for his
long-time rival.
"Initially it was a bit of a shock...I've played a lot against
Ricky and he's the most competitive man I've ever played
against," he said.
"I think the way he played
the game, the intensity
with which he played the game, is a credit to him. He's al-
ways represented Australia with a lot of dignity and a lot of
skill"
Former England captain Michael Atherton believes Ponting's
contribution should not be measured in numbers alone.
"He's right up there (with the best ever) - averaging more
than 50, the second-most Test runs and more than 40 hun-
dreds.
"But I don't think of him so much in a statistical way. He was
just a great competitor for Australia.
"His game's never been just about an accumulation of statis-
tics. His prime motivation has always been to help Australia
win Test matches.
"He's an ultra-competitive, hard-nosed competitor on the
field but a nice man off it ... a peerless competitor."
Players from around the world quickly took to Twitter to
communicate their respect for Ponting, including former
team-mates such as legendary bowlers Shane Warne and
Glenn McGrath.
Warne wrote: "Congrats to Ricky Ponting on an amazing ca-
reer, well done Punter...Enjoy your last match in Perth bud-
dy, was a pleasure playing with you!!!"
McGrath added: "Well done Punter on an incredible career. It
would be great to see you finish with a ton. It was an honour
to play alongside of you #legend."
England batsman Kevin Pietersen, who made his Test
debut as Ponting lost the Ashes for the first time
in 2005, voiced his admiration.
"Ricky Ponting RETIRES.... ONE OF THE GREATS!" he
wrote.
"I always got excited playing AUS, so I could watch him
bat up close. Well done Punter!"
Michael Vaughan, the England captain in the 2005 Ashes,
wrote on Twitter: "The best batsman I had the privilege
to play against ... Ricky Ponting... #Punter. Australian
cricket will not be the same without him."
Ponting's only Ashes success as skipper came in the 5-0
whitewash six years ago over an England team led by
Andrew Flintoff.
While Ponting is bringing down the curtain on his glori-
ous career, Flintoff was preparing to begin a new one in
the boxing ring, and at a promotion for his first fight told
Sky Sports News: "He's amazing, he's one of the best
batsmen ever to play the game.
"He's finally called it a day - fantastic career, tough com-
petitor, someone I loved playing against.
"He'll be missed in Australian cricket but also world
cricket - top man."

ASP World Title Possibilities Heading into Season-Ending Billabong Pipe Masters
Event No. 9 of 10 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the O’Neill Coldwater Classic at Santa Cruz’s Steamer Lane, has been completed and won by Taj Burrow (AUS), 34.
Heading into the final event of the season, the Billabong Pipe Masters, three surfers remain math-ematically in contention for the 2012 ASP World Title: Joel Parkinson (AUS), 31, Kelly Slater
(USA), 40, and Mick Fanning (AUS), 31.
Due to the altered format for the Billabong Pipe Masters, all three surfers will automatically be
seeded into Round 3 of competition and finish no worse than Equal 13th (1750 points).
ASP WCT surfers’ year-end rankings are based off their top eight finishes from the 10 ASP WCT
events in 2012.
As Parkinson is the current rankings leader on the ASP WCT, the following ASP World Title sce-
narios will be based on his potential finishes at Pipeline.
If Parkinson finishes 13th, 9th or 5th at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs a 5th or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.*
*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.
If Parkinson finishes Equal 3rd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs a 3rd or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.*
*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.
If Parkinson finishes 2nd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning cannot win the 2012 ASP World Title.
If Parkinson wins the Billabong Pipe Masters, he will take the 2012 ASP World Title.
The Billabong Pipe Masters, the third jewel of the Vans Hawaiian Triple Crown of Surfing, will be
run from December 8 – 20, 2012.

Race fans wave goodbye to the 2012 V8 Supercar season and
to the V8 Supercars as we know them. Come 2013 race fans
will witness the Car of the future (COTF) and the introduction
to new car makers Nissan and Mercedes Benz will join the
grid come the 1st round of 2013 at the Clipsal Adelaide 500
in March 2013. Kelly Racing swapping the lion for the Nissan
and Stone Brothers Racing stepping out of the car that has
carried the hope of the Ford fans all over Australia. Swapping
the Blue Oval for a Mercedes Benz to contest the V8 Super-
cars Championship.
Vodafone’s Jamie Winchup securing the title for 2012. Send-
ing off principle sponsor Vodafone in fine style.
2012 marks 50 of racing V8 Supercars racing at the icon of
motorsport in Australia Bathurst 1000 in New South Wales,
Australia. The holy grail of racing tracks in Australia. The one
event in October of each year that true blue Holden and Ford
fans mark on their calendars to make the pilgrimage to the
Mount Panorama.
Race fans who have grown up watching the V8 Supercars
from the early days will know that the wheel has come full
circle with the re-introduction of a car maker that has al-
ready steaked its racing prowess on the circuits across Aus-
tralia of course if you were not around in the 70, 80’s then
you would not know that come 2013 will be the 2nd coming
for Nissan. As Nissan has already tasted the bitumen of many
of the circuits. For fans of the original Nissan will be hoping
that the 2nd coming will be just as successful as when Nissan
first tasted victory in the V8 Supercar racing.
The new kid on the grid will be Mercedes Benz, we have all
seen Mercedes Benz’s race in the GT category and the team
at Stone Brothers will be hoping for success as seen by the
Mercedes in other classes not just here in Australia but over-
seas.
Both Kelly Racing and Stone Brothers will be hoping the gam-
ble they have both taken by breaking ties with Holden and
Ford and brining in two new car makers pays off. Both teams
will be competing against the rest of the field who will be
racing in the new Holden and Ford COTF’s. Looking at it from
another point of view all the teams who take to the
grid in 2013 will all have one thing in common all will be
coming to grips with a new style of car or make. 2013 Should
be an interesting settling in period for all of the teams I just
say bring on 2013 and the Clipsal Adelaide 500 in March
2013.

The ‘Car of the Future’ was officially unveiled at the Sydney Telstra 500 ahead of Its 2013 racing debut. Ozsports gives you the
layman’s guide to COTF…..
FOR well over 12 months, talk of V8 Supercars’ ‘Car of the Future’ (COTF) has been
buzzing around the V8 Supercars Championship paddock.
There’s been plenty written and said by media and fans-some of it inaccurate—about COTF is, why it’s being undertaken and
what it all means. Some don’t understand it, while others have simply over—analysed it.
So, what does it mean?
Put simply, the ‘DNA’ of V8 Supercar racing will not change from 2013 when this new generation of cars takes over from the
Falcons and Commodores that currently make up the grid.
The cars will still feature V8 engines, rear-wheel drive and four doors. They’ll also continue to make the same roar and be just
as fast, if not actually faster. Currently, the chassis beneath the skin of the Falcon and Commodore are all extremely similar,
with the next step being a control chassis—it’s cheaper and is also aimed at making it easier for other potential manufactures
to build a V8 Supercar.
A Commodore will still have the DNA of a Commodore, ditto for a Falcon or any other type of car that joins in.
The doors will still open and close, the panels are the same shape and style of the road car, and the badges are real too!
A manufacturer wanting to join V8 Supercars Championship could even come along with their own V8 engine, used under a
parity system to ensure it’s on par with the current units in the class, or use a ‘category’ engine if they wish to go with already-
established technology.
The control chassis could then up the potential for a new manufacturer to join V8 Supercar racing. Regardless of whether an-
other manufacturer joins the V8 Supercars field, the change is still an important and necessary one for the future of the class.
Reducing costs is a key focus of COTF and it’s expected that the cost of building a new car will reduce by around half in com-
parison to a current specification machine. As a direct result, any repairs to the new cars will also be cheaper and less labour
intensive as well.
“ One of the things COTF does is that it increases the market relevance of the cars in the motoring world,” says Chairman of
the V8 Supercars Commission, Mark Skaife.
“The current regulations have been in place since 1993 and very few categories can boast that sort of technical stability over
almost 20 years . This is just an evolution of them.
“We have applied a proper business case analysis in an effort to curb dollars spent, as the cost of winning a Championship has
roughly doubled in the last 15 years.”
V8′s Motorsports
After all, if the cars are cheaper to build, teams are more likely to be able to
have additional cars constructed and available. Expanding the calendar and
racing more often— which is the long— held goal of V8 Supercars Chairman
Tony Cochrane, who has started his desire for up to 18 events in future—
becomes far more practical.
Finally, continual safety improvements are of paramount importance in all
forms of motorsport, and the same is also true with COTF .
That said, more events mean more racing for everyone: TV viewers, fans a
nd sponsors. It would keep racing in front of the consumer more often and
avoid the large gaps in the calendar that have previously made it difficult for
the sport to gain traction in major media outlets in comparison with ball
sports that take place every weekend.
The new cars will have a fuel tank that will be moved forward from the boot
and sit inside the main chassis. That means the fireball that engulfed Karl
Reindler’s at Barbagallo earlier in the year would be less likely in future in the
case of a rear— end collision.
A collapsible steering column, new fire extinguisher system and added side
protection are all features of a COTF spec V8 Supercar, while windscreens will
become polycarbonate, the overall weight of the car will drop by about 100kg
and 18— inch tyres will be introduced for the first time.
Engines will be positioned 100mm further rearwards for safety as well as
reducing costs in the case of severe accident damage.
Independent Rear Suspension and a transaxle gearbox will also be a new
feature technically, more reflective of modern road cars and keeping with the
theme of increasing motoring market relevance.
V8 Supercars have commissioned Queensland— based Pace Innovations to
construct two prototype cars built to COTF designs— one a Falcon and one a
Commodore— and have been testing them on a variety of circuits before all
final technical
Specifications are locked down. The final examples were unveiled at the
Sydney Telstra 500.
As much as COTF may seem confusing, the end is that race fans, whether
casual or hard-core, shouldn’t worry too much.
The cars will essentially look the same from the outside; they’ll still make that
unique V8 Supercar growl and the best drivers from this part of the world, and
sometimes the other, will still be fighting it out for the title.
Cutting costs, having more races, making the drivers safer and potentially
welcoming a new competitor into the mix can’t be
such a bad thing, despite what the naysayers would tell you.
V8 Supercars will move to an 18-inch tyre— slightly bigger than the long—
used 17— inch with Dunlop retaining the deal to provide rubber to the series
after singing a new deal that will take them through to 2017 as official tyre
supplier.
Dunlop Motorsports Manager Kevin Fiitzsimons says the change won’t be
very noticeable.
“Cosmetically, you can’t really tell the difference, “he says.
The tread is still the same width, it’s just missing half an inch out of the side-
wall. It won’t look a great deal different what we have now.
“Having a bigger tyre gives a lot more flexibility as to the variety of braking
packages you can fit inside the wheel as well.
“Cars all over the world are being made with 18– inch wheels now so we’re
going with the flow and moving along with that.
“Most race cars around the world, particularly in GT racing, use 18-inch too so
it’s more of a common size.
“ The tyre will be stronger in the materials that are used to make it. It’s still a s
compromise tyre that has to be used on 16 different circuits in all sorts of
temperatures and it has to be used on the front (to steer) and the rear (to
drive) of the cars, which doesn't happen with other categories around the
world, which have dedicated and different tyres for each end of the
car.”

One of the major changes in the 2013-specification is an upgrade in wheels and
tyres

Ferreira commits to Reds future
Adelaide United FC is delighted to announce it has locked in another of its impressive foreign brigade with Portu-guese winger Fabio Ferreira signing a two year extension to stay at the club.
Less than 48 hours after Argentine Jeronimo Neumann recommitted to the Reds on a new two year contract, Fer-reira has also agreed to terms for the next two Hyundai A-League seasons.
Plucked from second division NSW club Dulwich Hill by the Reds back in August, Ferreira has made an immediate impact in the Hyundai A-League, playing every game and scoring twice.
The 23 year old, who spent a year at English Premier League giants Chelsea, has settled in well to Adelaide and is delighted to be given the opportunity to secure the next stage in his career.
“I’m very happy. I really like the club and it’s very important for me to be able to sign a new deal,” Ferreira said.
“The club has been really good for me, as well as the team and the fans, I really like being here and I’m excited that I will be staying in Adelaide for a longer period.”
Reds fans were treated to the quality Ferreira is capable of producing last Friday night as he frequently made dam-aging runs out wide in the win over Melbourne Victory, his performance highlighted by a first class strike in the 22
nd
minute.
Willing to take a punt on Ferreira with his career seemingly at the crossroads, Adelaide United Coach John Kosmina said he was pleased the former Portugal Under 19 representative had found his feet in the Hyundai A-League and he was confident he could be a player that would give the Reds an extra dimension in the attacking half of the pitch.
“It’s terrific that we’ve been able to secure Fabio for another two years,” Kosmina said.
“He came here knowing it was an opportunity to show what he is made of and in the first ten rounds he hasn’t disap-pointed.”
“I think he has proved that he can compete at this level, and with his pace and skill on the ball, I’m sure he is going to continue to cause a lot of defenders in the A-League headaches so I’m glad that we’ve managed to keep him here.”

Perth favourite Casey Dellacqua has been forced to with-
draw from the Hyundai Hopman Cup due to
injury.
The West Australian native was looking forward to playing in
front of her home crowd, but a foot injury the
former top 40 player picked up in Osaka in October proved
to be her downfall.
“So disappointed to withdraw from Hopman Cup due to a
foot injury sustained in Osaka,” said Dellacqua.
“It’s a Peroneal Brevis tear and although it’s getting better
every day it’s not going to be ready in time for
Perth and I can’t rush my return to competition. I really
hope I can try and play in Hobart if I’m ready and if I
get a wildcard.
“I always love playing at Hopman Cup, the people of Perth
always get behind me and it’s a great feeling to
have so much support. I was also really looking forward to
being part of history and playing at the new
Perth Arena. Hopefully I have the chance to come back next
year.”
Dellacqua was due to team with Australia’s Bernard Tomic in
the December 29 to 5 January event. A
replacement for Dellacqua will be announced shortly.
“We are so disappointed for Casey that she’s had to with-
draw from the Hyundai Hopman Cup and wish her
all the very best for a speedy recovery,” said Event Director
Steve Ayles.
“I know how much playing this event means to her and
how much she loves playing in front of her home
crowd in Perth.
“Casey is concentrating hard on her rehab and is looking
forward to playing again very soon. I’m sure
everyone will join the Hopman Cup team in wishing her all
the best for her Australian Open preparation.”
With the tournament just days from beginning, excitement
is mounting as Perth prepares for a host of the
world’s best and favourite players including No.1 Novak
Djokovic, Ana Ivanovic, Tommy Haas, Andrea
Petkovic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Fernando Verdasco and Venus
Williams.

Football's back, and how!
It was a painstakingly long off season that provided many talking points, but unlike previous seasons, the topics leading
up to Round 1 of the 2012-13 Hyundai A-League season were positive to say the least. So much so that Berisha's contro-
versial penalty in the Grand Final was quickly forgotten.
Ange Postecoglu jumped ship to the highly disappointing Melbourne Victory, who ended the season in turmoil. Hiring the
league's best coach quickly brought the focus back to Melbourne, and so did the conclusion of the Kewell saga, as he quit
the club citing family reasons.
Sydney FC pursued Graham Arnold as they looked to replace the outgoing Lavicka, but were knocked back. Though they
eventually promoted Youth Team coach Ian Crook to the top job, the club had designs on a transfer that would change
the face of Australian football.
When news first broke of Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero's potential move to Sydney FC,
the country was licking their lips in anticipation, yet with negativity surrounding the last couple of
seasons, no one really truly believed it until the day he was confirmed, and suddenly everything
changed.
Not even Adelaide United's quarter final run in the AFC Champions League could steal some me-
dia from the arrival of Del Piero. His arrival would prove pivotal in the month leading up to the
opening weekend.
Newcastle Jets soon came in with the news of Emile Heskey's signing, after spending his whole
career in the English Premier League. Suddenly talk of more big names joining the league became
a common theme. The excitement was building.
All this and hardly anybody noticed the new boys West Sydney Wanderers were moving along under the radar. Having
appointed Tony Popovic as the manager, he quickly set up his squad from the back, bringing in experience with Ante
Covic, Michael Beauchamp and Nikolai Topor-Stanley, while also securing the services of exciting youngster Aaron Mooy.
But they also got in on the act in the Marquee hunt. Shinji Ono, a Japanese veteran who saw success with Feyenoord and
Urawa Red Diamonds was signed by the Wanderers, amidst rumours of Michael Ballack being interested in joining.
Suddenly the coverage of the league was magnified all around, and the negative vibe that had been crippling the league
suddenly became positive. All the hope and optimism was restored.
The Melbourne Derby that opened the season saw Ange Postecoglu's new chargers fail to get off to a good start, losing to
new coach John Aloisi's new look Heart side. The biggest crowd of the season to date this season 42,032, helped set an
attendance record for an entire round in Australian domestic football history, as 93,500 poured through the gates all
weekend.
Adelaide got off to the best start, having only suffered defeat to a Melbourne Victory outfit who were close to ringing the
crisis bells. The Reds who had their AFC Champions League quarter final tie against Bunyodkor, used their early start to
the season to great effect, and with eight games gone, sit two points clear at the top of the table after eight games to
date.Following closely behind are the ever consistent Central Coast Mariners. Graham Arnold's troops have begun the
season in the same vein as they started the last. Without a doubt the highlight so far coming in the 7-2 defeat of Sydney
FC, where Daniel McBreen defied his advanced years to put on a sensational display to score the first ever hat trick by a
Central Coast Mariner. The fixture against the Melbourne Victory also saw possibly the best football ever played in the
history of the A-League in the first half. Though the second half saw the game soured by red cards to Zwaanswijk and Flo-
res (for Melbourne) the first half surely set the new bar for the league.
Alessandro Del Piero

The blue and white boys
from Melbourne current sit in third, and have firmed as a strong contender for the title. The campaign got off to the worst
start, losing the derby and to Brisbane 5-0, but the response has seen 4 wins in the next 6 games. Their football is getting
better each week as Ange Postecoglu instils his principles into the side, mainly evident in the most recent outing away to
West Sydney, as the Victory battled to win 2-0 following a red card to debutant Gallagher in just the 16th minute.
It was tough to take for the new boys in West Sydney, as they just could not break down the stubborn Victory outfit. Their
start to the season has surprised many doubters. Having taken a while to score their first goal, it eventually came in a 1-0
win at Suncorp Stadium. Popovic's new boys have a sound defence, making them hard to break down. The first Sydney Der-
by also saw plenty of media attention, as Parramatta Stadium was sold out. While the Wanderers lost, they have not been
overawed by the new stage and have certainly proven to be competitive, sitting in 6th.
The same cannot be said for their city rivals Sydney FC however, as everything has gone pear shaped for the Sky Blues. Del
Piero's arrival has seen media attention sky rocket in Sydney, but Crook's men failed to inspire, and they currently prop up
the table, while Crook resigned following a tough loss to the Melbourne Victory having seen a 2-0 lead slip. Del Piero has
shown his class, but the team has been a complete let down up to this point of the season. The showdown with Newcastle
early in the season saw the two big Marquees go head to head, and Sydney were outplayed at home.
Newcastle Jets have started the season relatively well, though they have had their ups and downs. Emile Heskey has proved
to be a great signing so far, but so have Craig Goodwin and Mark Birighitti. The two youngsters have been key performers in
the Jet's best displays this season, and a table position of 4th is quite deserving. Perhaps the biggest blip
so far however has come at home to the Phoenix, as they lost 3-0.
Always everyone's tip to struggle, the Kiwi outfit has proved the critics wrong again so far, sitting 7th in
the table, showing glimpses of brilliance like the one in the Hunter, while proving a tough side to beat
home and away no matter the line up. Even with six players out on international duty, they managed to
scrape a 1-1 draw against the Heart. Their games have all been closely run contests, and with a bit more
luck maybe could've been higher in the table. That point proved when they were harshly done by in Ade-
laide with a controversial decision against Sigmund who was adjudged have fouled Jeronimo when re-
plays proved it was harsh. Their most recent contest against Perth Glory ended 1-1, as they showed im-
mense character to upset the hosts to draw the match.
Last year's beaten grand finalists started the season by exacting revenge on Brisbane as they won 1-0 at
Patersons Stadium. The Glory have been a bit hit and miss however, looking brilliant at times but poor at others. This is
highlighted by their wins against Newcastle and Heart, while losing very disappointingly to Sydney and not taking their
chances in the defeat against a 10 men West Sydney Wanderers. Ian Ferguson's men currently sit in 5th and should be con-
tenders if they can get some consistency together.
Brisbane Roar have been somewhat of a disappointment so far this season, as they currently lie second last in the league,
with their worst start in the history of the club's history. Following in Postecoglu's footsteps isn't easy, and Rado Vidosic has
had little to cheer about. The 5-0 drubbing of Melbourne Victory without a doubt the highlight so far, while beating Sydney
4-2 showcased more class. However, the drubbing suffered against Melbourne Heart and defeats to West Sydney, Perth,
Central Coast and Adelaide showed that they are not the same force as they were in the last couple of seasons.
Finally there's the other Melbourne boys. John Aloisi has sure had a tough start to his managerial career. Victory in the der-
by and against Brisbane are their only highlights of the season. They have otherwise been disappointing, showing lapses of
concentration to drop crucial points against Newcastle and Wellington. Lying in 8th, they have plenty of work to do in the
lead up to the next derby, where a loss against the Victory could begin to derail their finals hopes.
It's certainly been a start to the season worth talking, watching and reading about. With another 19 rounds to come, all the
teams in the league still have a chance to change their fortunes or even take the initiative and run away with the title. The
Marquee men have made a splash, and so have some other new faces in the league. It's going to be an entertaining few
months ahead!

Ozsports Online Sports Network is a small totally volunteer media outlet being staffed totally by sports fans and me-
dia students. Everyone involved in Ozsports Online Sports Network have an interest in sports and media. We have come
together to combine our two favourite things sports and media.
Ozsports began as an idea of founder and Chief In Editor Darren Andrews who is a sports fan and a media and is stud-
ying a Bachelor in Media Communication. Darren has volunteered in many facets of the media most of these opportunities
have been in the form of international sporting events. Darren has been a media assistant and Logistics at the
2000 .Summer Olympics and Para Olympics in Sydney Australia. 2003 saw Darren back at his role of the media assistant at
the IRB Rugby World Cup working at the Adelaide matches. 2006 Darren was also a media assistant at the Asian Womens

also hosted a breakfast show on a community radio station along with the role of breakfast producer with another commu-
nity radio station.
As you can see with a person like Darren at the helm of Ozsports we have a wealth of experience in the sports and media
field. Along with the other members of staff who are currently also studying journalism.
As already been pointed out Ozsports is a small media outlet with a very small budget. For Ozsports to move ahead
and become a gain a bigger hold in the sports, media market we need to expand and develop other mediums to be competi-
tive in the sports, media arena.
Areas we are very keen to get involved in is a weekly sports show, live sports streaming an to be able to be able to
develop the Ozsports website with more features for our viewers and to be able to have Fourth Quarter printed and distrib-
uted through shops.
There are so many more avenues we would like to explore with
funding we fill we can take our dreams from drawing table to reality.

This Summer expect to see cricket fans dressed up at the one-day series games across
cricket stadiums throughout Australia. Cricket Australia has joined with GPY&R to create an exciting new way to enjoy the
summer of cricket. The Commonwealth Bank Series, called Summer’s Biggest “Dress-up” Party. The campaign captures the
notion of the Commonwealth Bank Series is like one big summer house party, only it’s at our place—the sporting stadiums
of Australia.
Australia’s sporting stadiums across Australia will be filled with the colour and excitement of this series, Cricket will be
pumping to the beats of a house party at a suburban home, filled with people wearing colourful costumes from all walks of
life and world-class game in the backyard. This summer, on top of spectacular cricket, the ODIs for the first time will feature
appearances from Grammy award-winning Basement Jaxx plus Sneaky Sound System, Zoe Badwi and Sarah De Bono.
Cricket provides the perfect backdrop for a summer party in a festival atmosphere with thousands of fans dressed in outra-
geous costumes and Dj’s playing party tunes.
“The fans told us that the Commonwealth Bank Series is as much about what happens in the crowd as on the pitch. Over
recent seasons we have seen some incredible dress ups and the event is becoming more and more social. This season we
have dialled it up considerably with global acts such as Basement Jaxx, huge prizes and lots of great entertainment in and
around the venues. The new campaign captures this nicely,” said Julian Dunne, Senior Manager—Marketing for Cricket Aus-
tralia.
“The new campaign confidently positions the Commonwealth Bank Series as a fantastic way to spend a glorious summer’s
day with friends. We are delighted with how it’s all come together and feel certain that it will help drive strong results for
Cricket Australia,” added Mat Cummings, Group Account Director at GPY&R.
In 2013, the Commonwealth Bank Series host two of world cricket’s most competitive and entertaining teams, Sri Lanka and
the West Indies, with each team playing a five-match series against the Aussies. There will be plenty of big names on show
with the likes of Sangakkara, Dilshan, Malinga, Gayle, Bravo, Pollard and Aussies Clarke, Warner and Hussey out to entertain.

ANNA MEARES—Australian Cyclist
This issue of Fourth Quarter’s Athlete Profile I have chosen to
look at an Australian Olympic gold medallist from London
2012.
This athlete had us on the edge of our seats during her gold
medal race against English cyclist Victoria Pendleton in that
race where we all held our breath in the Women’s Sprint
race and celebrated after she crossed the line in front of Vic-
toria Pendleton.
Of course if you were not watching the cycling at the London
Olympics then you would not know who I am talking about
but if you are an Aussie cycling aficionado then you would
know I am talking about Anna Meares.
Anna was born in Blackwater in Central Queensland in 1983
and living in the small coal mining town of Middlemount,
Anna is the youngest of four children in the Meares family.

Winning gold in the 500m time trial at the 2004 Athens
Olympic Games.
Winning silver in the sprint at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
Triple world championship crown in 2011.
Interesting Facts
Anna Meares became a household name when she won a gold medal in the 500m time trial and a bronze in the sprint at her
first Olympics appearance in Athens in 2004.
Four years later she made a remarkable return to the track following a horrific race crash in which she broke her neck. Just 7
months after the severe injury threatened to end her career, Meares won silver at her second Olympic appearance in Beijing
in the sprint where she went down in the final to Britain's Victoria Pendleton. The medal was the only one Australia claimed
on the track in an otherwise disappointing Olympic campaign.
After winning the individual sprint, team sprint and kierin at the 2012 Australian Track Championships, Meares went on to
claim a gold, silver and bronze at the 2012 World Track Championships in Melbourne. She won the kierin, led Australia to a
silver in the team sprint and finished with bronze after being knocked out in the semi-final in the individual sprint. Meares
also broke the world record for the flying 200m in qualifying for the individual sprint.
Meares and teammate Jack Bobridge will be the only Australian track cyclists in London with Olympic experience so she will
be looking to lead the cycling team on and off the track.
Meares has won four gold, a silver and a bronze in three consecutive Commonwealth Games appearances in Manchester,
Melbourne and Delhi.

Italian Pro-Tour rider Allessandro Ballan has been injured in a
training crash in Spain. Classic specialist Ballan is facing a
prolonged period off the bike after breaking his leg, injuring
his spleen and puncturing a lung in a high-speed training acci-
dent.
Allessandro was due to ride in Adelaide, Australia along with
fellow BMC Team Mates in the SANTOS Tour Down Under
which commences next month.
The 33-year old has already undergone one emergency oper-
ation to remove his spleen, but will need another to repair a
displaced fracture of his left femur.
The BMC rider was descending the Coll de Rates climb, close
to Parcent, near Valencia, at the end of a four-hour ride on
Thursday when he crashed.
The impact also broke a rib, which consequently caused a
small puncture of a lung.
Ballan had been scheduled to race at the season-opening
Tour Down Under next month, before embarking on a spring
Classics campaign.
The 2008 world road race champion was looking to improve
on his performance in 2012, when he finished third in Paris-
Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders, and fourth at Strade Bian-
chi.
BMC Racing Team directeur sportif John Lelangue was unable
to put a timescale on Ballan's recovery.
He said: "Of course, his loss means a lot since Alessandro is
one of our key riders for the classics.
"But most important right now is that he can recover and
just get back to his normal process.
"We will wait for all the medical information before even
beginning to think about what could be his plan for coming
back."

Sports Superstitions We all hear popular superstitions when the 13th day of the month falls on a Fri-day. And no player wants to wear the number 13. It is said that superstitions have been a part of sports since their beginning. Players and fans alike have their ways of avoiding bad luck. Some superstitions are stranger than others. For example, Michael Jordan (a graduate of North Carolina) always wore his blue North Carolina shorts under his Bulls uniform for good luck. Baseball pitcher Turk Wendell brushes his teeth and chews licorice between every in-ning. Wade Boggs eats only chicken the day of a game and draws a symbol that means “To Life” in the dirt before every at-bat. Former pitcher Mark “The Bird” Fidrych used to play with the dirt on the mound and talk to himself before every inning. Here are some other common supersti-tions. Baseball Spitting into your hand before picking up the bat is said to bring good luck. A wad of gum stuck on a player's hat brings good luck. It is bad luck if a dog walks across the diamond before the first pitch. Some players believe it is good luck to step on one of the bases before running off the field at the end of an inning. It is bad luck to touch the baselines while running off and onto the field be-tween innings. Lending a bat to a fellow player is a seri-ous jinx. Some players actually sleep with their bat to break out of a hitting slump or stay in a groove. If a pitcher is throwing a perfect game or a no-hitter, never speak of it while it's going on. Basketball
The last person to shoot a basket during the warm-up will have a good game. Wipe the soles of your sneakers for good luck. Bounce the ball before taking a foul shot for good luck. Bowling To continue a winning streak, wear the same clothes. The number 300, a perfect score, on your license plate will increase your score. Carry charms on your bowling bag, in your pockets, or around your neck for good luck. Fishing Fish may not bite if a barefoot woman passes you on the way to the dock. Spit on your bait before casting your rod to make fish bite. Throw back your first catch for good luck. It is bad luck to change rods while fish-ing. Don't tell anyone how many fish you've caught until you're done or you won't catch another. Football Double numbers on a player's uniform brings good luck. It's bad luck for a professional football player to take a new number when he is traded to another team. A mascot is an important good luck sym-bol. Golf Start only with odd-numbered clubs. Balls with a number higher than 4 are bad luck. Carry coins in your pockets for good luck. Ice Hockey It is bad luck for hockey sticks to lie crossed. It is bad luck to say “shutout” in the lock-er room before a game.
Players believe they'll win the game if they tap the goalie on his shin pads be-fore a game. Rodeo Always put the right foot in the stirrup first. Avoid wearing the color yellow. Always shave before a competition (for men only!) Tennis It's bad luck to hold more than two balls at a time when serving. Avoid wearing the color yellow. Walk around the outside of the court when switching sides for good luck. _______________________________ The only two days of the year in which there are no professional sports games (MLB, NBA, NHL, or NFL) are the day before and the day after the Major League all-star Game. It takes 3,000 cows to supply the NFL with enough leather for a year's supply of footballs. There are 336 dimples on a regulation golf ball. In 1986 Danny Heep became the first player in a World Series to be a designat-ed hitter (DH) with the initials "D.H." In the four major US professional sports, (Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Hock-ey), there are only seven teams whose nicknames do not end with an "S:" Bas-ketball: The Miami Heat, The Utah Jazz, The Orlando Magic. Baseball: The Boston Red Sox, The Chicago White Sox. Hockey: The Colorado valanche, The Tampa Bay Lightning. Football: None. In 1963, baseball pitcher Gaylord Perry remarked, "They'll put a man on the moon before I hit a home run." On July 20, 1969, a few hours after Neil Arm-strong set foot on the moon, Gaylord Perry hit his first, and only, home run.
