2015 Wrap UpIreallyenjoyedservingNALMSasyourPresidentthispastyear,especiallytravelingaroundalittle,visitingsomeofthestateandregionalaffiliateconferences,meetingalotofgood,kindfolks.That’swhatIlikeaboutNALMS;it’sfullofgood,friendlypeople,passionateaboutprotectingandrestoringourlakesandreservoirs.IhopetohitafewmorethisnextyearasImmediatePastPresident.

ItwasaverysuccessfulyearforourLakesAppreciationMonthprogramandthefirstyearNALMSadministeredtheSecchiDip-In.WelearnedalotfromthefirstrunthroughtheDip-In,whichmeansit’llbeevenbiggerandbetterin2016.Hopeeveryonewillsupportthesetwoprogramsin2016.

Ourpublications(LakeLineandLake and Reservoir Management)remainhighqualityandwellreceived.ThemostrecentLakeLinevolumes,HABsandUSEPAandWhatWorksmayhavebeenthemostpopularever.

Weincreasedourpresenceinsocialmediathispastyear,promotingNALMSandinteractingwiththecommunityusingFacebook,Twitter,andLinkedIn.Thesearegreattoolstoshareourexperiencesandpassion.Ifyou’renotinvolvedinNALMS’socialmedia,thinkaboutit.

TheAlbertaLakeManagementSociety,thefirstCanadianchapterofNALMS,isaverybusygroup.Besideshostingtheannual

NALMSSymposiumin2016,theorganizationdoesalotwithlakemonitoringdata,publiceducation,andparticipationinlocalandregionalpolicyandgovernmentplanningforlakesandwatersheds.Thereisagreatlistoflakeandwatershedplansontheirwebsite.

TheNALMScalendarwrappedup2015withanoutstandingannualconferenceheldinSaratogaSprings,NewYork.Thehostcommittee,theNewYorkStateFedrationofLakeAssociations,andtheconferencecommitteedidawonderfuljobputtingtogetheradiverseprogramoftalksfocusingonawidevarietyofissuesfacingourlakeresources.Inadditiontothetalks,thenearly500attendees

hadseveralworkshops,aswellasfieldtripsfromwhichtochoose.

Thisyear,NALMScelebratedits35thanniversary.Tohelpcelebratethismilestone,weinvitedalltheNALMSPastPresidentstoattendtheconference.Inall,19ofthe34previouspresidentswereabletojoinus.BillJonesandBobJohnson(bothpastpresidents),workedalongsideReedGreentomakethishappen.ItwassuchatreattohaveallofthempresentforsomefellowshipwiththecurrentBoardofDirectors.AstheincomingPresident,thiswasagreatopportunityformetoreconnectwiththosethatIalreadyknewandtomeetothersforthefirsttime.Inaddition,tospendingtimewiththeBoard,severaljoinedusatthestudentluncheonforsomegreatinteractionwiththenextgenerationofNALMS,ourstudentattendees.ThefriendshipsandprofessionalcontactsmadeovertheyearsareoneofthebestthingsaboutNALMSandtheconferences.

Aswemoveinto2016,IamexcitedfortheallthethingstheNewYearwillbring.Thispastmonth,IhavebeenbusyrecruitingchairsforcommitteesandprogramsthathadvacanciesaswellasfillingvacanciesontheBoard.Thisiscriticalasthesearethefolksthatdomuchoftheworkthathelpsensuretheorganization’ssuccess.Ourbigpushattheconferenceto"GetBusywithNALMS"wasverysuccessfulandnettedseveralnewfolksinterestedingettingmoreinvolved.Increasedcommitteeactivityisalreadyunderway.Ihavebeenintouchwithcommitteechairs,andtheyarereadytohitthegroundrunningandaresettingupmeetingswiththeirmembersaftertheholidaystoget

started.Inadditiontorampingupthecommittees,anotherfocusfortheupcomingyearwillbecommunication.Goodcommunicationiscriticaltooursuccess.NALMSshouldbetheplacetogotofirstforinformationonlakesandtheissuestheyface.TheBoardiscurrentlylookingatanumberofwayswecanmakeimprovementsinthisarea.IamlookingtofillaspotontheBoardtocoordinatecommunicationitems.Pleasecontactmeifyouthinkyouhavetherightexperienceandtimetohelpuswiththisimportanttask.Withthatinmind,Iamlookingforwardtoaverybusyandsuccessfulyearaswechargeahead.

In2016wewillhosttwoconferences.TheNationalMonitoringConferenceisthefirstandwillbeheldinTampa,FloridaMay2nd-6th.Thisisalargeameetingthathashadinthepasthostedover1,000attendees.JeffSchlossandtheNALMSstaffhavebeenhardatworkandarelookingtohaveregistrationopeninJanuary.Formoreinformation,pleasevisithttp://acwi.gov/monitoring/conference/2016/.
