What really got me interested in Judaism was discovering that I was allowed to disagree with it.

After college, I was living in Boston and found myself bouncing between a few of that city’s many opportunities for young Jewish professionals. But the one that really hit home for me was a small, intergenerational group of students who gathered every few weeks to learn from the Kedushat Levi, a collection of the mystical teachings of the Hasidic master Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev. His interpretations often veered wildly away from the plain meaning of the Torah texts he was commenting upon, and I found his ideas to be challenging and exciting. But what struck me most was that when I disagreed with him, my disagreement was taken seriously and encouraged. In the end, that openness to discussion and questioning led me to a deep love for not only his teachings, but for Jewish study and Judaism in general. Without that experience, I’m not sure I would have become a rabbi.

That’s why I hope so strongly that you’ll come and learn with us this year. It’s not about discovering the right or wrong answer — it’s about the

journey, the debate, the connections you’ll make with others in our community, and ultimately discovering your own personal relationship to the wisdom of our tradition. And I know, from personal experience, how deeply enriching it can be to study the sources of our tradition and culture in an open, nonjudgmental environment.

This year, our slate of Jewish learning options is as wide and deep as our tradition. You can dive into the politics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, take a look at modern ethical quandaries through a Jewish lens, come together to learn about and fulfill the mitzvah of bikur cholim (visiting the sick), brush up on your Hebrew or Torah trope skills, or pore over the writings of Abraham Joshua Heschel, just to name a few.

Best of all, most of our classes consist of stand-alone units, allowing you to drop in and drop out over the course of the year…but, of course, the more you’re able to attend, the better!

I’m looking forward to a year full of deep, meaningful, engaged study with you — and I’m looking forward to our disagreements most of all!

Holiday Food Drive November 12-26 I Tifereth IsraelTifereth Israel is partnering with the Columbus KTC Buddist Center to collect non-perishable food and toiletries for the Holy Family Food Pantry on West Broad Street. The pantry serves families living in the East Franklinton neighborhood as well as families staying at a nearby shelter. Items of particular need include canned fruits and vegetables, canned or boxed juice, canned chicken or tuna, boxed crackers, pasta, shampoo, deodorant, tooth paste, and baby diapers. Please place your donations in the designated bins in the synagogue Atrium.

Lily Jordan Paine will be called to the Torah as a bat mitzvah on Saturday, November 11, 2017. She is the

Inclusion Initiatives Stacking Up at CTIPeople of All Abilities Find a Spiritual Home at Tifereth IsraelCongregation Tifereth Israel is committed to removing barriers to participation for all members and guests of the synagogue. In the last 12 months, the following have been added to our facility:

Live StreamingShabbat and holiday services can be viewed online by visiting the synagogue website, www.tiferethisrael.org, and clicking on the link on the right-hand side of the page. Services are not recorded and video cameras are programmed before each Yom Tov to turn on and off automatically. The equipment and service needed to provide live streaming from the sanctuary was generously given to the synagogue by long-time members Ronnie Blank & Bev Weston.

Assistive Hearing SystemInstalled in the sanctuary this summer, the synagogue's assistive hearing system was the gift of members Ronnie Blank and Barry Blank. Those who want to use the system should speak with an usher or member Lawrence Stolz, who can provide instruction on how to use the devices.

Large Print MaterialsLarge-print siddurim, holiday machzorim, and chumashim are available for those with reduced vision. The weekly Shabbat pamphlet is available in a large-print format as well.

Chair LiftTo provide all members of the community with greater access to Tifereth Israel's staff and clergy offices, as well as the Minnie Cobey Library and Wasserstrom Board Room, the shul's non-functioning elevator has been replaced with a new chair lift. The project was funded by the synagogue's Mark Steiman Special Needs Fund and through the generosity of Gerald and Sandi Steiman.

will be no exceptions, and complacency is a non-issue. Our second initiative, membership engagement, has a variety of meanings. It can mean attending a Sisterhood or Men’s Club event, reading Torah or leading davening, or sharing recent experiences and thoughts as a guest speaker on a Saturday morning. And it can mean attending a daily minyan so others can say kaddish, being on the Spotlight Series Committee, or being connected in some other way.

Our third initiative, sanctuary enhancements, will allow for seating to be enhanced to meet our needs in 2017 and beyond. Once, communication was exclusively from the pulpit, at the front of the sanctuary. Today, our clergy increasingly seek to engage us. It is difficult for the congregation to connect with each other while staring at the back of everyone’s head. Imagine our historic, sentimental, and beautiful space with new, portable seating. These comfortable seats - along with a moveable, center bima - could provide the flexibility to change and to adapt in the most intimate ways possible and bring us closer to the clergy and “where it’s happening.”

Of course, our work is not done, nor will it ever be complete as perfection is a moving target. All are welcome at Tifereth Israel, a joyful, vibrant Jewish congregation, working together to inspire our community and improve our world.

Since I became president of Tifereth Israel a year and a half ago, I’ve had the chance to hear from so many of you: Wishing me well, sharing your concerns, and, yes, even some complaints. My close friends have done everything from ask me why I would want to do this, to offering their help. What I want to tell you is that I have heard every word, thought about every concern, and taken them all to heart.

What has come of these many conversations and emails? They have become the goals created by our Board of Trustees that will provide for an environment that offers EVERYONE a meaningful and spiritual connection to our Jewish faith.

On Yom Kippur, I shared that our Board has developed priorities for the short- and long-term health of our synagogue. We selected three initiatives, in no particular order, that we feel need immediate attention. Improved communication, membership engagement, and the enhancement of our sanctuary. Yes, governance, our current dues model, and how we “deal with rules and requirements” also appeared on our list. These items, as well as others, will receive the attention they deserve within the coming months.

Communication is the backbone of every successful relationship, marriage, and business. It must be our priority, shared by both our lay leaders and staff. A clear practice for how quickly we get back to you is being developed now. Expectations will be high, there

A few more words: I try to listen to things I hear – either directly or indirectly. This resulted in some significant changes to our High Holiday services this year, much of which was very well received. I also have heard criticisms – directly and indirectly. I’m anxious to hear your thoughts and feelings clearly, to take them to heart, and to make High Holiday services and all the other things we do better for more of us. Naturally, that can be tricky: Some people complain about the very same thing others extol!

Is there something you’d really like to see change? Please reach out to me for a serious and civil conversation. There’s ample time now to make the best decisions for next year. In the meantime, let me be the last to wish you Shanah Tovah!

On Wednesday, November 1, I’ll be starting to teach the new course Eleh Devarim: These Are The Words. I’ve been hard at work putting together materials for Hebrew readers and not-yet Hebrew readers so everyone can succeed in building a vocabulary that makes them love to pray – at least more than they do now. Please check it out. I am expecting to livestream and record it, too. It can change your life. The class will meet Wednesdays, November 1 and 15, December 6 and 20, and January 10 and 24 from 7:15 to 8:45 pm. I’d like to have some of these classes in people’s homes…but we’re going to start at the synagogue.

There are many additional and really excellent adult learning opportunities that have recently started – more than I can remember for many years. Please take advantage of these opportunities. You can see the full list on page 5 of this month's Forum
