T he Hyehwadong Filipino Catholic Com-
munity (HFCC), the Filipino organiza-
tion under the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center for
Filipino Migrants, and the biggest Filipino
Community in South Korea is in its 5th year of
organizing this fund raising event to showcase
Filipino culture, talent and beauty. This will be
held on November 25, 2012 at 3:00 in the after-
noon at the Tongsong High School Auditorium,
Hyehwadong, Seoul.
This year’s search highlights the participation
of multicultural spouses. The organizers recog-
nized the ever-increasing role that multicultural
families play in the promotion of Filipino cul-
ture in this country.
In this year’s search, 14 candidates, 3 of
whom are from multicultural families, will vie
for the title of 2012 Mr. and Ms. Kalinangang
Pilipino. The female candidates are: Liezel
Mayuga, Jessah Mae Rosales Kim, Josielyn
Yoon, June Rose Perez Sinajon, Sheila Mae
dela Cruz, Geraldine Persia, and Ayessa Carla
Villanueva. The male candidates are: Isidro
Antiquiera, Mark Josef Yuzon, Kempee Eyas,
Jake Rivera, Nash Ang, Ryan Urbina, Marlon
Aguila.
Little Damayan Troupers, a group of Filipino
-Korean children from multicultural families
will also perform the Tinikling, Philippines’
traditional dance. Performing in the same event
are our talented singers and performers: Shad-
dai Solidum, Mary Joy Lor Tungala, Anna
Lopez Sta Ana, and Peter Lloyd Sales Cabillo.
As previously mentioned, this event is also a
yearly fund raising activity of the HFCC to
gather some funds to help Filipinos in Korea
who are in dire need of financial assistance in
cases of hospitalization, emergency deporta-
tion, death, and other urgent needs and outreach
activities of the Philippine Center such as relief
services and scholarship. Moreover, this is also
a cultural venue where Koreans and other for-
eign nationals can discover more about the
Philippines’ rich cultural heritage and values
through dances, songs, costumes and traditions.
Everyone is invited to watch this event. For a
ticket worth 10,000 Korean Won, you can
watch the show, contribute to charity, and have
a chance to win big prizes in the raffle draw.

Lesson Three: Our Father,
Abraham (Continuation…) II. Our Father Abraham (Continuation…)
C. Signs of Flesh and Spirit
Abraham believed that God would give his
only beloved son back to him. And by this
faith, he upheld his obligation to the covenant
he entered into with God.
God made faith in His promises the condition
of His covenant with Abraham. Faith is
likewise the condition of those who would enter
into the New Covenant made in Jesus.
We see this worked out in the letters of St.
Paul, especially in His letters to the Romans
and the Galatians. Abraham, Paul says, is "the
father of all...who believe" (see Romans 4:11-
12). What the Scripture said of Abraham -
"faith was credited Abraham as righteousness" -
is also the condition required of us. We, too,
must trust in God's promise, "believe in the One
who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead" (see
Romans 4:9, 23-24).
The blessings that God promised to bestow
on the world through the descendants of
Abraham come to us through our faith in the
Cross and Resurrection of Jesus. The sacrifice
of Christ brings to us "the blessing of
Abraham" (see Galatians 3:14). These blessings
of our father Abraham flow to us in Baptism,
which is the sign of the New Covenant, as
circumcision was the sign of God's covenant
with Abraham.
God made circumcision to be a sign of His
covenant oath to make Abraham's descendants
a royal dynasty: "Thus my covenant shall be in
your flesh as an everlasting pact" (see Genesis
17:1-14). But as St. Paul teaches, this covenant
sign in the flesh was meant also to symbolize
the spiritual and sacramental sign by which we
enter into the New Covenant, the royal family
of God.
Already in the prophets, "circumcision of the
heart" had become a sign of dedication o f one's
whole being to God (see Deuteronomy 10:16;
Jeremiah 4:4; compare Romans 2:25-29; 1
Corinthians 7:18-19). The prophet Jeremiah
said that the law of the New Covenant would be
written on the heart (see Jeremiah 31:31-34).
And this happens in Baptism, which is the
"circumcision of Christ" (see Colossians 2:11)
and the true circumcision (see Philippians 3:3).
As circumcision was the sign of membership in
the people of Abraham, the "new circumcision"
- Baptism - is the sign of membership in the
Church, the new people of God.
And it is in those baptized in the Church that
the promise to Abraham is fulfilled - that "a
great multitude, which no one could count,
from every nation, race, people and tongue"
would find blessing and salvation in the God of
Abraham (compare Genesis 15:5 and
Revelation 7:9-10).
D. Shem's Blessing
God promises to bless Abraham. And we
know that those blessings come in his
descendants, especially in Jesus. But during the
course of Genesis, the only actual blessing that
Abraham receives is from the mysterious king-
priest, Melchizedek (see Genesis 14:18-20).
We have to do a little background, and even a
little math, to understand what that's all about.
If you notice, God has lots of problems with
his "first-born" sons in Genesis - beginning
with Adam, who commits the original sin.
Adam's first-born, Cain, in turn becomes a
murderer.
In the ancient world, to be first-born son was
to be the sole inheritor of all the assets,
privileges and powers of the father. To receive
his father's blessing was every son's goal. In the
Bible, this "natural" pattern is given a
supernatural spin - not to mention some
unexpected twists.
God intended to bestow His blessings on the
world through His "first-born," Adam. But
Adam, through his pride and disobedience,
failed to live up to the obligations of his
birthright. So, God raised up a new first-born,
Noah, who proved to be "a good man and
blameless in that age" (see Genesis 6:9).
Through the faithfulness of Noah, God
renewed his covenant with creation and the
human family (see Genesis 9:1-17). But the
first-born Noah, like Adam before him, fell into
sin (see Genesis 9:20-22). Still, despite man's
unfaithfulness, God is always faithful to His
covenant promises. So He turns to a new first-
born, Shem, the righteous first-born of Noah.
Shem receives a cosmic blessing from Noah -
"Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem!" -
which marks the first time in Scripture that God
is identified with any one human being (see
Genesis 9:26-27). God is designated as "the
God of Shem" - a sign of Shem's great
righteousness and stature before God.
However, then Shem disappears. Unlike the
other first-borns - Adam, Cain, Noah - we don't
see him fall into disgrace. In fact, we don't hear
anything more about him - except that he has
sons and that ten generations later one of his
descendants, Terah, gives birth to three sons,
the first-born of which is Abraham (see Genesis
11:26-27). It is very curious, though, that we
never see Shem - heralded as the most
righteous of the men born after the Flood -
handing on his blessing to his first-born or to
any one of his children.
This is where the math comes in: Add up the
numbers given in the account of the
descendants of Shem's line (see Genesis 11:10-
26): Abraham is born 290 years after Shem's
first-born, Arpachshad. Now, if Shem is 100
years old when Arpachshad is born, that means
that he's 390 when Abraham is born. And, if
Shem lived five hundred years after
Arpachshad's birth, and Abraham lived to be
175 years old (see Genesis 25:7), that means
that Shem outlived Abraham by 35 years.
Who cares? Why does it matter? Well, for the
ancient rabbis and for centuries of early
Christian interpreters, including probably the
author of the Letter to Hebrews, it mattered a
great deal. It's also the key to figuring out
what's happening between Abraham and
Melchizedek in Genesis 14.
According to a long tradition - Jewish and
Christian - the mysterious Melchizedek is
actually Shem, the great patriarch, the righteous
inheritor of the blessings promised by God after
the Flood.
Let's look at some of the clues in the biblical
text. Notice carefully the kingdoms that are
represented at the beginning of Genesis 14,
especially how they can be traced to the
genealogy of the sons of Noah - Ham, Japheth
and Shem.
Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim are
all kingdoms descended from Canaan, son of
Noah's wicked son, Ham (see Genesis 10:6,
19). Shinar is another kingdom descended from
Ham (see Genesis 10:6, 10). Elam appears
descended from Shem (see Genesis 10:22). And
the kingdom of Goiim (in Hebrew, literally "the
nations") appears descended from Japheth,
father of "the maritime nations" (see Genesis
10:5).
The battle lines drawn up in Genesis 14 are
confusing, but here's what happened: the king
of Elam, aligned with three other kingdoms,
defeated an alliance of the kings of Sodom,
Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboim and Zoar, reducing
them to servitude (see Genesis 14:17).
Abraham, in turn, defeats the alliance led by the
king of Elam, in order to rescue his nephew,
Lot, who had been seized as a prisoner of war
in the earlier battle.
As a result, the descendent of Shem,
Abraham, now ruled over the descendants of
Ham and Japheth - just as Noah had prophesied
would happen (see Genesis 9:25-27).
Precisely at this moment, Melchizedek
appears. And what does he do? He pronounces
a blessing over Abraham that sounds a lot like
the blessing that Noah pronounced over Shem
(see Genesis 14:19-20).

Hindi nawawalan ng disenteng mamamayan
ang bawat salinlahi. Ang mga sinaunang Griego
ay may isang Aristoteles na nagwikang ang
pulitika ay ang sining ng isang
makatuwirang pamamahala ng
bayan. Paganong naturingan si
Aristoteles, ganoon pa man, higit
na dakila ang kanyang pananaw
sa pulitika kaysa sa Kristiyanong
nagngangalang Niccolo Machia-
velli. Siya ang nagpalaganap ng
modernong kalakaran sa pulitika.
Ayon sa kanya ang pulitika ay
ang pag-agaw at pananatili sa
kapangyarihan sa anumang
paraan, mabuti man o masama.
Kay Kristo ba natutunan ni Gi-
noong Machiavelli ang pananaw
na ito? Madiing hindi. Hindi ito
ang pulitikang pinangaral ni
Hesus. Tunay ngang si Hesus ay
hari subalit ang kaharian niya ay
hindi nakatungtong sa ambisyon,
pag-iimbot at kapalaluan ng tao.
Hindi ito itinatag ni Hesus para
sa pagkakamal ng kapangyarihan
at mga dinudulot nito—
kayamanan at katanyagan—
maalipin niya at mabusabos ang
sangkatuhan. Ang paghahari ni
Hesus ay nabubuhay sa pag-ibig.
Dahil dito, ang kanyang pagha-
hari ay pinapalakad hindi lamang
sa katuwirang binanggit ni Aris-
toteles, kung hindi higit pa roon:
sa katotohanan at paglilingkod.
Ang hari ng pag-ibig —si
Hesus—ay hari rin ng katoto-
hanan.
Ang sinungaling at manlil-
inlang ay di kailan pa man maar-
ing umibig. Paano mo masasa-
bing mahal mo ang isang tao na
iyo namang pinagsisinungalin-
gan? Tama bang sabihin na kaya
mo lamang nagawang pagsinun-
galingan ang iyong minamahal sapagkat iniibig
mo siya? Hindi ba nakakalito ang pangungusap
na ito? Hindi natin ubod maisip kung paanong
ang pag-ibig at panlilinlang ay nagkahalo at
nagkasama. Ang pag-ibig ay tunay lamang
kung nakabatay sa katotohanan at katapatan.
Kaya nga ba tuwiran ang sagot ni Hesus kay
Pilato sa katanungan nitong sumusuri sa kan-
yang pagkahari, “Tinuran mong ako’y hari. Ito
nga ang dahilan kung bakit ako sinilang at
sinugo sa mundo: upang ipahayag ang katoto-
hanan” (Jn 18:37). Nagulumihanan si Pilato
kung kaya nagtanong muli: “Ano ang katoto-
hanan?”(Jn 18:38) Sa mga katulad ni Pilato,
kay hirap sagutin ang katanungang ito. Sa mga
katulad ni Pilato, sa mga nagbubulag-bulagan,
kahit ang araw ay sungkitin at ilagay pa sa
harapan nila, hindi pa rin sila makakakita. Kaya
si Hesus—ang liwanag—kahit na nasa harapan
na nila, hindi pa rin nila nakita. Mahirap ta-
lagang gisingin ang mga taong nagpapanggap
na tulog pa, at magpakita sa mga taong dilat na
nagkukunwaring bulag sila.
Ang hari ng pag-ibig — si Hesus—ay hari rin
ng paglilingkod.
Ang pag-ibig na nambubusabos ay hindi
maaring maituring na pag-ibig. Ang pag-ibig na
nagmamalabis ay, sa totoo lang, kulang na ku-
lang. Paano kaya masasabi sa
kapwa na mahal mo siya habang
siya’y inaabuso at minamaltrato.
Amor brutal: ang pag-ibig na ito ay
hindi totoo. Ito’y isang abnormali-
dad na galing sa taong may sira sa
isip kung kaya’t kailangang gamu-
tin. Nakalulungkot, parami nang
parami ang mga taong ganito na
humahawak ngayon ng kapangyari-
han: mga nanay at tatay na abnor-
mal, na ang tingin sa mga anak ay
mga alagang patabain, na kapagka
tumaba na’y maaari nang ipagbili at
katayin. O mga pulitikong ang tur-
ing sa mga mamamayan ay mga
tangang maaaring lokohin. Sayawan
at kantahan lang at bigyan ng kaunt-
ing pera, mabubulag na sa kanilang
mga ginagawang katiwalian. Hindi
ganyan si Hesus. Si Hesus ang
Anak ng Diyos ay nagkatawang tao
hindi upang paglingkuran kung
hindi upang maglingkod (Mc
10:45).
“Open to serve you”—bukas upang
maglingkod —ito ang pagpapaha-
yag na nagpapatototoo na ang
paglilingkod lang ang maaring mag-
bukas. “Closed to serve you”—
pinid para maglingkod—ay isang
pagsisiwalat na walang kahulugan.
Kaya nga ba ang paghahari ni
Kristo ay hindi pulitikang namama-
yani sa mundo. Ang pulitika sa
mundo ay hindi nagsisilbi kung
kaya’t ang mga mamamayan ay
hindi naaabot ng paglilingkod, lag-
ing nasa labas ng serbisyo. “Closed
to serve you”—ito baga ang pata-
karan ng mga pulitikong ma-
panlinlang dito sa mundo—
pulitikang walang saysay, puliti-
kang ubod gulo.
Salamat kay Hesus—ang haring nagliling-
kod—ang paghahari ng Diyos ay laging bukas
para sa atin. “Open to serve you!”—ang pata-
karan hindi ng isang pulitiko kung hindi ng
Kristong Haring nagbukas ng langit para sa
mga tao.
