Presidents Report - Teri Collins

Hi everyone,

There has been a lot of racing in the last wee while and I haven’t had much of a chance to catch up. Our members have done us proud at the North Islands and Goldstar so far. Congrats to Aaron de Ridder for regaining his Yamaha Heavy NI plate, a fantastic result for him and the rest of his crew and family. Brendon Jury and Aaron Marr have also been in great form of late, as has Matthew Podjursky. As the year draws to a close, I’d like to reflect on another great year for our club. Our drivers have collected 3 national titles this year, a feat only bettered by the 5 won in 2007. We’ve continued to improve our facilities and the track is looking in great shape. We have had a recent influx of new members to the club which is fantastic. Welcome to all the newest members to our club, please ensure you take full advantage of our track and club to help you enjoy your racing. It would be great if the existing members came and raced some of the newbies as well. The club is considering entering a float in the NP Xmas Parade this year. If you would like to have a kart on display, please contact a committee member for details. The parade is planned for Saturday 30 November.

See you all on the 24th at club day, the last points round before the Xmas fun day on 15 December.

Cheers for now….Teri

Report from North Island Champs

Thomas Boniface, Ryan Jury, Dylan Frere, Brendon Jury, Scott Williams, Aaron Marr, Brad Still and Aaron de Ridder made the trek to Wynns Raceway in Wellington for the KartSport NZ North Island Sprint Championships at Labour weekend. The weather forecast was looking pretty average and the predictions were spot-on! The qualifying on Friday 25 October was held in torrential rain and cold weather, which proved a massive challenge for all the crews and drivers. Cadet pilot Thomas Boniface qualified in 5th spot after experiencing all manner of problems around engine performance. Dylan Frere drove well to qualify 12th in a very competitive Junior Restricted field and Ryan Jury was 23rd on the grid for the heat racing.

Big brother Brendon posted times good enough to place him 5th on the time sheets. He had plenty of speed up his sleeve as well. In the Senior Yamaha classes, Aaron Marr qualified 3rd, Brad Still was 4th fastest (even after a quick excursion to the bottom of the creek) and Scott Williams was 6th, once again in a classy field of drivers. Aaron de Ridder was lightning fast in the wet and placed 2nd behind Zach Zaloum in the Yamaha Heavy class, but struggled in Rotax Max Heavy and finished up 6th prior to the heats. Following the running of the 2 heats, the following Pre-final starting positions were established:

Thomas 6th Dylan 17th (result of a 23rd in H1) Ryan 24th Brendon 5th Aaron Marr 3rd Brad 5th Scott 6th Aaron de Ridder (Yam.) 5th Aaron de Ridder (Rotax.) 5th

The format in Wellington was difficult to nail a setup for, as it ran over 3 separate days of changing weather and only finals were held on Sunday 27th.

Some more furious racing was had on Saturday, with the running of H2 and the Pre-final, with our boys having a mixed bag of results. Thomas’s engine issues continued and a motor was surrendered in an effort to be competitive, to no avail. He finished the Pre-final in 12th spot and very frustrated! Dylan had a good Pre-final, ending up in 12th spot with Ryan improving from 24th to 19th position.

Brendon Jury was fast again in the Pre-final finishing 4th and looking really good, driving with real determination and skill. Aaron Marr drifted back one place during the Pre-final and would start the Final in 4th. Scott Williams was still struggling a little but gained two places to put his kart on P5 for the Final. Brad Still had a shocker and finished in 10th place, a difficult position to start the final from.

Aaron de Ridder had a strong drive to catch and pass Zach Zaloum from the rear of the field to win the Yamaha Heavy Pre-final…outstanding! He drifted 2 places during the Rotax Max Heavy Pre-final to place his kart on 7th for the Final, a tough task with a flying Zach Zaloum in P1.

Finals day on Sunday was a nice change from the previous weather patterns and was clear and dry. Thomas managed to gain 6 places after the team found they had been a victim of poor quality fuel bought on the way to the event…bugger! Dylan Frere completed the weekend in 11th place and Ryan Jury was 18th.

Brendon Jury pulled out a big race performance and got to 3rd position, one or two more laps and he may have been 2nd, but a stellar drive regardless! Aaron Marr also made 3rd position on the Yamaha Light podium after a great drive, and Scott Williams was 6th. Brad Still struggled and made it up to 9th. The drive of the weekend came from Aaron de Ridder who slugged it out with Zach Zaloum in Yamaha Heavy and eventually came

KARTSPORT TARANAKI NEWSLETTER | Issue 15 PAGE 4

out on top after an epic race. Aaron regained his NI plate from 2012 and was thoroughly deserving of his title. He was able to improve 2 places in Rotax Max Heavy to finish the weekend in 5th…another podium!

So, a successful weekend for de Ridder, Jury and Marr and a mixed bag for a number of the other drivers. Not sure the format was the best way to run an event like this; it introduced a number of variables which made life difficult for every team. The 2014 NI Champs will be held in Rotorua, a great track and a new challenge for all.

The final results were:

Aaron de Ridder (Yam. H) 1st (NI) Brendon Jury (Jnr Yam.) 3rd Aaron Marr (Yam. L) 3rd Aaron de Ridder (Rotax. H) 5th Thomas Boniface (Cadet) 6th Scott Williams (Yam. L) 6th Brad Still (Yam. L) 9th Dylan Frere (Jnr Restr.) 11th Ryan Jury (Jnr Restr.) 18th

More comic relief…

A pharmacist walks in to find a guy leaning heavily against a wall. He asks the clerk, "What's with the guy over there by the wall?" The clerk responds, "well, he came in here this morning to get something for his cough and I couldn't find the cough syrup, so gave him an entire bottle of laxative."

The pharmacist yells, "You idiot! You can't treat a cough with a laxative!" "Of course you can! Look at him; he's too scared to cough!"

Technical Night

The club is still working on arranging a “technical night” to assist those new to our sport to gain understanding of the basics of kart setup, maintenance, preparation and other stuff. The idea is to hold it one evening at Supreme Kart Supplies and to go over a few things to help you understand how these pieces of equipment are supposed to work. Once a date is finalised, an email will be sent to you all (those that receive this by email!) to let you know when it will happen.

Bring your kart if there is something burning you need help with and we may be able to collaboratively solve any issues you are having. There will be a hand-out for you to take away with some of the basics on it. Keep your eyes peeled for the date.

2013 Supreme Kart Supplies WPKA Goldstar Series - Round 1

Eleven of our club contested the opening round of the Goldstar Series in Manawatu on Sunday 3 November. Finally, a dry weekend in Palmerston North! Thomas Boniface and Logan Smith lined up in the Cadet class, Logan competing in his first big meeting away from home. Dylan Frere, Ryan Jury and Robbie Johnson represented the Junior Restricted karters and Brendon Jury, Jayden Smith and Jonathan Dwyer were racing in Junior Yamaha.

Brad Still and David Cox represented Taranaki in Rotax Light and Nathan Nolly was entered in Rotax Heavy. The racing was excellent and all Taranaki competitors did our region proud. David Cox was unfortunate to bend his chassis in an early heat and retired for the day. The results were as follows:

Cadet: Logan Smith 7th Thomas Boniface DQ Junior Restricted: Dylan Frere 4th Ryan Jury 8th Robbie Johnson 10th

Junior Yamaha: Brendon Jury 2nd Jonathan Dwyer 4th Jayden Smith 5th Rotax Max Light: Brad Still 3rd David Cox 11th (DNF with bent frame) Rotax Max Heavy: Nathan Nolly 3rd The Grand Prix Results were as follows: Cadet: Logan Smith 7th Thomas Boniface DQ Junior Restricted: Dylan Frere 3rd Ryan Jury 5th Robbie Johnson 9th Junior Yamaha: Brendon Jury 1st Jonathan Dwyer 4th Jayden Smith 5th Senior GP: Brad Still 1st Nathan Nolly 3rd

2013 Rotorua Club Champs

The Podjurskys travelled to the Sulphur City to contest the Rotorua Club Champs on 3 November. In 2012, Matt won the Junior Yamaha Club Champs and was keen to add the Formula Junior title to his collection. The weather was good and all the fields were large, a typical Rotorua club day. Whilst I don’t have an official report from Matt, I can tell you the racing was typically hard and the locals were not keen to see another title head south. However, after a great days racing, Matt was crowned 2013 Formula Junior Club Champion. He recorded three race wins, a second and a third placing. Well done Matt and the Podjursky team!

Some helpful advice about testing……

The greatest difficulty about ‘big meetings’ is that you only ever get to test in those conditions when you’re at a big meeting. There is simply no other time when the track has layers of fresh rubber being laid down (and peeled up) by so many karts. Because the conditions are so different to a normal practice day, it can be very difficult to adapt. People often complain at the end of the weekend that “we tried absolutely everything, and nothing worked!” This is especially galling after two full days of practice, and then a recognised star turns up and puts it on pole after nothing more than a tuning run. Funnily enough, often the two days practice is actually part of the problem, especially at an unfamiliar track. As the driver first starts to learn the track, the kart doesn’t do everything that he wants and so adjustments are made to try to rectify the problems. Track widths are altered, front end alignments adjusted, axles and hubs go in and out of the kart. By the time Thursday afternoon rolls around, the kart setup is nothing like the one that works at home, no-one can remember what changes did what, and to top it all off, the driver has finally learned the track and would be doing better lap times with the kart back in its standard setup (which is what you should do whenever you get lost, by the way). The solution is a simple rule:

On Wednesday, you alter nothing but tyre pressures, basic track widths, and gearing/pipe. Nothing else. Nothing else! When you wake up Thursday, do your first session with the setup you used Wednesday afternoon. Now people will start breaking out new tyres, and now you can start to learn. Now the track starts to evolve into the track you will actually be racing on, and now the changes you make might actually be meaningful. Gearing and pipe data translates pretty well from Wednesday to Sunday. Axle selection really, really doesn’t.

So that’s it! Don’t confuse yourself. Do plenty of testing at home and have confidence in your basic setup. Make minor alterations from Thursday afternoon through to Sunday morning, but nothing more than one or two (at most) adjustments per session.

Some setup tips from a seasoned kart campaigner…… Most people think that moving the weight in a kart backwards gives you more rear grip (and forwards gives more front grip), but most people are totally wrong. Let’s learn why: We already know that the tyres provide the lateral (sideways) force that turns the kart around the corner. If a kart with driver weighs 100kg, then the tyres need to generate 200kg of sideways force in order to pull “2G’s” around a corner. We also know that the weight distribution of the average kart is roughly 40/60, front and rear (most karts are actually further forward than that, but we’ll use those numbers to keep the maths simple). What most people don’t realise - but which is of absolutely critical importance - is that while the rear tyres are carrying 60% of the vertical (gravitational) force, they must also generate 60% of the lateral (sideways) force to send the kart around the corner. The rear tyres (or really, the outside rear tyre by itself) need to generate 120kg of lateral force to keep our 100kg kart pulling 2G’s around the corner. If our kart is constantly sliding out in the rear, and we move the seat back… we’re asking the rear tyres to do even more work! If it can’t cope with having to create 120kg of lateral force, how is it going to handle 122kg, or 125kg? Similarly, if a kart is constantly understeering (pushing) a common mistake people make is to move the seat forward, which asks the front tyres to do more work than they can do! The number one lesson for the karters of the world is - “Move the seat the other way mate… trust me”. Now, like all things in karting, this is not always true, unfortunately. There are occasions where moving the seat forward will provide more grip - or at least cure corner-entry understeer - if the cause of the understeer is a lack of mechanical jacking, rather than over-worked front tyres. This is usually the case in lightweight, low-grip classes like Cadets/Junior Restricted and even Junior Yamaha. Then, because this is the environment in which many people learn to set up their karts, it sets up a habit which is hard to break longer term. If you are racing on medium-to-sticky tyres (MG Reds), and especially if you have understeer from mid-corner onwards, moving the seat back will be the cure.
