Meet the New Commodore…

Terry Cano was elected

Commodore for a 2-year term

at the November 26th Annual

General Meeting.

Terry began sailing 25 years

ago by “walking the dock” on

a Wednesday night. He

became a TBYC member the

following year and has been

racing ever since.

He especially enjoys longer offshore races and has done 8 Trans Superior Races and at least 16

Internationals. He is the owner/skipper of the X Yacht, Straight Jacket.

Terry has been involved with the TBYC executive serving as Treasurer and Rear Commodore. He

is also Secretary of the Lake Superior Yachting Association and races with the Temple Reef

Sailing Club on Thursday nights.

His intent as Commodore is to continue to work with various stakeholders to ensure the TBYC

maintains a presence at the Marina that can provide various social/club activities for all its

members.

Commodore’s Log, December 18, 2015…

The TBYC Annual General Meeting of November 26 resulted in some changes on the TBYC executive. I would like to

thank those departing the board for their time and dedication to the Club. I look forward to working with the new board

over the next year. Together, I know we will accomplish what we set out to achieve. The board will continue to work on

a Prince Arthur Landing facility as our CN Station lease is due for negotiation next summer. In addition, we will continue

to look at the Mission Island storage challenges and act prudently. We will continue to enjoy the success of our Social

and Racing Programs. As I write this, I am thinking about the tremendous growth and expansion the Club has enjoyed

since I became a member and I look forward to the challenges of our continuing success.

I welcome new board members and am excited to see fresh perspectives at our meetings. A full listing of the Board,

along with contact information is presented below.

Annual General Meeting… The AGM was held Thursday, November 26th, 2015 at the Mission Clubhouse. The following

items of note emerged from the meeting:

Constitution Motions at the AGM: There were several motions passed at the AGM which amended either the title

or responsibilities of the following positions: Rear Commodore; Public Relations Director; Bulletin Director. In

addition, the Executive position of CN Station Director was eliminated with responsibilities for that position now

falling to the file of the Properties Director. Specifics of the changes will be found in the 2015 Revised Constitution

to be found soon on the TBYC web site.

In addition, the following motions were passed:

• Racing Membership - It was moved “that an additional membership category be created. The new

category will be a ‘Racing Membership’. The annual fee for this membership will be the Club’s annual full

membership rate and pro-rating will not apply. An additional fee, set annually by the race committee, will

be charged to participate in Club racing activities. No initiation fee will apply and the membership will not

include Club services or voting privileges. Article 11.3. E does not apply.”

• Commercial Vessels - It was moved “that membership not be restricted, however boats used primarily as

commercial vessels and insured as such not be allowed to use Club facilities or services.”

Marina Advisory Committee (MAC)… Some items of interest from the MAC meeting of December 8th, 2015, include:

• An engineering firm has been contracted to design the roof for the fish cleaning station; it will be a simple

overhead structure tapping into the existing concrete base; cost of engineering $4,500; estimated cost of

structure $5,000; the roof should be erected in time for the 2016 boating season.

• There will be a call for parties interested in sitting on the Marina Advisory Committee going out to marina

contract holders in the new year; the request for expressions of interest will be either in the contracts mail-out

or the Spring newsletter. So if you are interested, you may want to start to put together a brief resume outlining

why you want to serve on the committee and the experience and expertise you could bring to it.

• Over the 2016 boating season, the City will be doing a study on Piers 2 & 3 (below left) to look at the condition

of the docks and develop a plan for replacement as needed.

• The new gates have been installed on north Pier 2 (pictured below right); the effectiveness of the design will be

assessed next season with the thought of installing similar gates on Pier 1.

• Contract holders should anticipate a 5% increase in rates for the upcoming season; there will also be a new

commercial rate introduced along with rate differentials between 50 amp service and 30 amp service.

• A wind and wave study of the waters in and around Tugboat Basin will be proposed for the 2016 Capital budget.

The next meeting of MAC is scheduled for Wednesday, February 10th, 2016. If you have any questions or comments,

please do not hesitate to contact TBYC MAC Representative Ray Innes at [email protected] or 344-7555.
