I heard their trip to Detroit, with a tour of the Opera House and the Detroit Athletic Club (including lunch), was a great success. Bob Gray and I had a ball with the bus load of members and guests who went to Grand Rapids to visit the Grand Rapids Women’s City Club, have a tour of this lovely second largest city in Michigan and then get to see some of the Art Prize entries. Our host insisted we stop our city tour to see the entries just outside of the Jerry Ford Museum. What a stop!! We learned later we had seen the first, second, third and fourth prize winners there. Many declared this is a trip to be repeated next year, perhaps with an overnight stay. We certainly did not see all 1500 entries!!! These two trips were organized by Mary Greulich and Joan Walker, respectively. Very nice job. Now that we are experiencing colder weather and shorter days, it is time for the “Grounders” to have a work day to put all of the flower beds “to bed” for the winter. Any and all are welcome to join the party! And please let our hard working “Grounders” know how much you appreciated all their efforts this summer to beautify our grounds for our and our guests’ enjoyment. They are: Linda Atkins, Mary Bachman, Janet Cassebaum, Cindy DeGalan, Fran Kawalec, Margaret McClamroch, Ronnie Meade, Anne Swanson, Marlene Thomas, Jerry Thornton and Chair, Mary Ann Pierce. Special thanks go to Mary Ann Pierce and her wonderful models, too, for the great fashion show on October 15 put on by Wendy’s in the Nickels Arcade. Johnny was a great emcee and the outfits chosen and worn by the models were very trendy. Those present received a nice 20% off coupon for a purchase! There are a number of our members who are ailing. Some have had operations: Mitzi Estes, Kathy Fisher, Carroll Walterhouse. Some are ill: Connie Sherman, Lorraine Alvord. Some are on the mend: Connie D’Amato, Jean Dickinson, Mary Greulich, Sarah Lampert, Jerry Prescott, Lucia Traugott. Please do check on these individuals to see if there is anything we can be doing for them. Also, if you hear of anyone who is unwell, please let Kylista or Emilia know so we can send them a note or a card. We are all very pleased to announce Emilia Sanfilippo has agreed to become our new Catering Manager. Congratulations Emilia! Now we need to find someone to be Office Manager– a hard task because her shoes will be difficult to fill. Wish we could “clone” her! Susan M. Smith President Rebecca is a 1940 American psychological dramatic thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock as his first American project. Need a Ride? Fall is upon us and the days are getting shorter. Driving in the dark can be treacherous. With it getting dark so early you may be hesitant to join in evening Club activities to avoid the dangers of night driving. If so, simply call the front office! Kylista and Emilia can help find a ride for you from our list of volunteers. And if you would be willing to offer a ride to a fellow member put your name on the list of volunteers! If someone requests a ride, the office staff will scan the reservation list and contact any volunteers who are planning on attending.

It won’t be long now - less than 60 days - until our 30th Annual Art & Craft Festival. As in the past, we have a wonderful selection of artists exhibiting at our Festival. It is our hope that many, if not all, of our members will join us for a fun day of shopping and people watching. Club Members can help promote the Festival by bringing their friends to our event and using the Internet. Emailing your friends and family about the Festival is a great, convenient way to advertise. The more the merrier and we all know that this is the season to be merry. We hope to see many of you at the Festival as it is one of the Club’s biggest fundraisers. We can’t be successful without you. The Exhibitors appreciate your patronage and the Club appreciates your support. If you have an hour to volunteer the day before and/or the day of this event, please contact Pat Amort at (734) 645-5431 or [email protected]. If you have any questions about the Festival, please contact me at (734) 645-5718. Penny O’Malley

Save the Date!

Make the Holidays Brighter for Our Staff! Please watch for a card enclosed with your billing statement inviting you to make a donation to the Staff Holiday Bonus Pool. As members, we see how hard they work for us day in and day out. That alone deserves recognition. What we don’t see is how much they do for the special events (many nights and weekends) that keep our Club humming along. Let’s show the staff how special they are to us. It’s as easy as charging a donation to your account. The total bonus funds donated will be divided up and distributed to staff in mid-December. Thank you for showing your appreciation. Art at the City Club Welcome back to Paradigm, a group of 18 artists from southeastern Michigan who are “dedicated to the concept of quilt as art.” Most are professionals who lecture, teach, and sometimes, sell their fabulous fiber art to discriminating (and lucky!) art lovers. On exhibit are 28 pieces realized through various techniques and personal inspirations, and each rewarding to the viewer, from the casual to the contemplative. Sue Holdaway-Heys, whose work is known and admired by quilters throughout the land, has again to our delight curated a beautiful exhibition for us. Three of the quilts, including the large focal piece “Red Hot Blooms,” are hers.

*** Recent in-house art additions include a large and lovely landscape by Mary Bachman in the first floor ladies room, and a pair of sparking mosaic florals by Nicki Lee in the dining room. Terri Bartholomew Art Chair

Ann Arbor’s Supreme Court Justice Past Speaker at the Club Justice Bridget M. McCormack of Ann Arbor lost her niche as the youngest Michigan State Supreme Court Justice with the Governor's appointment of Jurist David Viviano following the resignation of Justice Diane Hathaway in January. But her youthful enthusiasm and ever-present optimism remains intact and appears contagious in the seven-member judicial branch. The Court begins its new session on Tuesday (October 8th) by tradition in the State Capital before returning to the Michigan Hall of Justice for future hearings. McCormack is proud of the Court's collegiality which contrasts with a history of past discussion and decisions that appeared political. A proud Democrat- from a family with a Republican father- she characterizes her view of the role of the court as conservative. "The Court, as defined by the Constitution, is designed not to make laws but to interpret them in making our decisions," the friendly justice notes. She adds, "Nor should our decisions be defined politically." Each year, the Court receives approximately 2,000 new case filings and issues a decision by order or opinion. "Many citizens are unaware that our first vote on an issue is often unanimous," she comments. During this first year on the court, she recalls changing her mind on select issues after hearing diverse viewpoints in the Jurist conference sessions. Justice McCormack's busy life includes answering the diverse needs of her closest constituency, her four children, who are active students in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. A member of the Obama Administration, her husband is in Washington, DC Tuesday through Friday. This weekend's schedule puts miles under her feet with stops in Grand Rapids and in Ohio for her children's athletic events. How does she welcome a challenging home life? With the ever-present McCormack smile and enthusiasm. Dale Leslie

Greg Fleming, Justice McCormack and Dale Leslie at the Ann Arbor City Club on Friday, October 4, 2013.

Spotlight on Beverly and Gordon Flynn In his early years, Gordon Flynn was somewhat of a nomad. He was born in Philadelphia, attended elementary school in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, high school in New Jersey and stayed in that state to earn an undergraduate degree in Pharmacy at Rutgers. He then went on to the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy from which he received a PhD. Not one to waste time, Gordon defended his dissertation at the end of June and went to work immediately at Upjohn in Kalamazoo. It is true that he started his job with a holiday for the Fourth of July but, after all, that’s just the breaks. Life was not all work and no play. Part of the degree program at Rutgers included a mandate to visit a pharmaceutical firm so, with a small group of class mates, Gordon went to the suburban home of Abbott Laboratories near Chicago. But first, a little background on Beverly. Beverly was born and raised in Zion, Illinois. After high school she attended a business college in Milwaukee where she earned an associate’s degree. Her first position after graduating was at Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago. Soon after going to work there she was invited to join a group who were learning in depth about Abbott with a view to leading tours for groups of professionals—mostly academics and students—around the labs and explaining the products and procedures. And who do you think turned up on one of her tours? Why, none other than Gordon Flynn! Beverly and Gordon’s group got along very well, so much so that she was sent a bouquet of flowers for her work. In fact, a friend of Gordon’s kept in touch with Beverly and learned that yes, indeed, she did intend to continue work on her degree at the University of Wisconsin, Madison—where, by chance—Gordon was headed. A year later, while Gordon was still working on his degree, the Flynns were married. While Gordon finished his degree at Madison, Beverly worked as secretary for the Dean of Men. After about seven years with Upjohn Gordon was offered a position in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Michigan. So it was goodbye to Kalamazoo where their three children had been born and off to Ann Arbor for the whole family. As a Professor of Pharmacy, due to his many well-received publications, Gordon had the opportunity to travel world-wide to give papers, participate in conferences and give lectures and seminars. Of all the places that he went (and they include the five continents), he says the several trips that he made to Southern France to give lectures to young scientists were the most rewarding. Gordon worked with Perspectives in Percutaneous Penetration (PPP)—drug delivery through the skin to you. He also taught at the University of Utah for one term on a sabbatical. In all, Gordon taught at Michigan for twenty-nine years. He took one year of leave when he went to California to work for Cygnus as a Vice President for Basic Research. While the children were young, Beverly devoted her time to them. As they grew, she held various positions including a stretch as secretary to Professor Gardner Ackley—what a small world! Her last job was with Great Lakes Bancorp but when they merged with TCF, she decided it was time to retire. Beverly joined the City Club in 2003 with another friend. Her goal was to play bridge so she took a few classes and played some games. Fate, however, took a hand. While vacationing up North, Beverly had a bicycle accident in which she was severely injured. This put her out of action for about a year. During that time her bridge partner had taken up other interests so that when she was finally ready to participate in Club activities again she had to make a decision as to if and how. She decided that she would become involved in committee work. She has made a great contribution as Chair of the House and Program and Classes committees as well as Secretary of the City Club Board. She is currently Chair of the House Subcommittee, now part of Physical Plant. Gordon and Beverly have been dependable supporters of the Club. They were the first sponsors of hors d’oeuvres for First Fridays. They also have joined several signature groups including Great Decisions of which they are charter members. Both have enjoyed the members they have met at the Club and both have the same wish for the Club: to see the dining program prosper! Libby Birdsall For the Membership Committee
