Call to Worship Psalm 100

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth. 2Worship the LORD with gladness; come into his presence with singing. 3Know that the LORD is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name. 5For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

Word

First Reading 1 Kings 17:7-16 Elijah and the widow of Zarephath

Today’s reading follows a time of drought and famine in Israel. 7After a while the wadi dried up, because there was no rain in the land. 8Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah, saying, 9Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you. 10So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, "Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink." 11As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, "Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand." 12But she said, "As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die." 13Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. 14For thus says the LORD the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the LORD sends rain on the earth." 15She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. 16The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand for the reading of the Gospel. Gospel Acclamation:

The Holy Gospel Luke 7:11-17 Jesus raises the widow’s son at Nain 11Soon afterwards Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. 12As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town. 13When the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her, "Do not weep." 14Then he came forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, rise!" 15The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. 16Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has risen among us!" and "God has looked favorably on his people!" 17This word about him spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding country. The Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Please be seated Children’s Worship. Children will depart for Children’s Worship and return following the sermon. Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Presentation of Gifts. As the offerings and the gifts of bread and wine are presented, the congregation stands and sings:

Come, ye thankful people, come; raise the song of harvest home. All is safely gathered in e’re the winter storms begin.

God, our maker, does provide for our wants to be supplied; Come to God’s own temple, come, raise the song of harvest home.

Today’s gifts include a small representation of the Christmas Child shoeboxes that have been collected at St. John’s. These shoeboxes will be shared with needy children around the world as a sign of hope and peace.

Let us pray. Merciful Father, we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you

have first given us — our selves, our time and our possessions, signs of

your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who offered

himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
