Jelena Jankovic BA

Jelena completed a Bachelor’s degree in Art History at York University. During her studies she was a member of the Visual Arts Student Association, organizing and curating yearly student art exhibits, andassisting at the campus gallery. After completing her studies in 2012, Jelena worked at a number of art galleries in the city including an international photogra-phy gallery. She currently works at Petroff Gallery as the Exhibition Coordinator, focusing on exhibition and events pro-gramming, art consultation, curation and artist outreach.

ArtSalon 2018Toronto is a city celebrated for its multiculturalism and artistic diversity. This is visually evident all over the city. From Chinatown to Greektown to Little Italy, we see beautiful representations of different cultures and individuals from across the world. Torontonians dine on exotic foods, mingle at cultural events, and experience the best the art world has to offer. This is why there’s no better city to host an exhibition like Art Salon!

Once again, Art Salon has brought together artists from across the globe to create an exhibition that not only proudly speaks to the heritages and roots of the participating artists, but also displays the individuality and personal expression of each.

Though this exhibition was not created with a particular theme in mind, it is cohesive in that it speaks to how we are all connected through different forms of expression and talent. Each piece speaks to the viewer about the artist’s personal experiences, beliefs and aesthetics through various forms. Whether the artist uses colours and textures to inspire an emotional response or representational images to illustrate a story, the viewer is allowed insight into the life of each artist. Mediums featured in the exhibition such as painting, ceramic and encaustic art, allow observers to connect to the artist through something other than language.

Art Salon is a one-of-a-kind art exhibit that connects international artists and allows them complete creative control without thematic restrictions – one of the many reasons this event is a must see.

Aleksandar Janicijevicpsychogeography, exploring urban language, morphology and social integration is my obsession. it is quite visible in all my work. art rediscovered, renewed and reused, interventions that are extending heritage art experiences. art that goes beyond one discipline, art that will spread between cultures and political systems. that’s what my goal is. how far I am on that road, time will tell…

Bojan BasaricMy work is situated between traditional landscape photography and abstract qualia, imprinted by layered tints of the arid back-country. Very little is revealed to me at the start of the process. While I scout, walk, hike and climb, images develop slowly on their own accord moving towards completeness, unity and closure. I often recall these words:“Reality is not always probable, or likely. But if you’re describing it, you have to make it as plausible as you can, because if not, the observer’s imagination will reject it.” - Jorge Luis Borges

Lives and works in Toronto, Canada, where his fascination with urban life provides the inspiration for much of his photography. His work illustrates a different side of city living, with colorful storefronts and graffiti-covered walls becoming the subject of vibrant, pop art compositions. Outside of the city, he also explores, the abstract, using natural forma-tions to create intriguning photographs that are rich in shape and tone.

Born in Belgrade, Boyan’s career spans over 20 years and his work is now part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Photography in his native city.

Eric BornsteinThe camera is often my sole companion as I head into the city or into the coun-tryside to look and see. I have no precon-ceived notion of what I will photograph that day but will know it when I see it. It is at that moment, from that flash of perception, when my eyes and mind are working together, that I can capture a compelling image. Photography is a vital part of my life. Through my teaching activity, I have created a community of like-minded individuals. Through my volunteering as the event photographer at my synagogue, I have documented many of the events held there. I am the family photographer and in this chosen role, I have recorded life cycle events and have documented the physical growth of my children and grandchildren.Photography has allowed me the op-portunity to look, to see and to appreci-ate the environment in which I live; the beautiful and the not so beautiful.Photography

Marina StojkovicBFA in drawing and painting, OCADU, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Born in Serbia and raised in Toronto my upbringing was always in between the roots of where ones home really resides. Finding solace in my passion for the creative became apart of my life at a very young age. Art was the sole driving force for my expression, the way I saw human connec-tion and the broadening of ones’ eyes to the world. My main objective as an artist is to create work that speaks. Language is beyond the words and alphabet, beyond where you are from. Art speaks, if I touch even one person with my creations I know I have done something right.

I consequently communicate and ex-press my thoughts and emotion abstract-ly in my paintings. The geometric shapes that I am using refers to the columns, entries, temples and other architectural elements. They are more metaphor for the state of mind or spirit than study of the real structure. Vibration within the textural surface is achieved through the layering of transparent colour and the simultaneously change of light and dark, creating a dynamic space in the paint-ings.

To take a journey in Art is to follow a path that will last you a lifetime. By using clay as my main medium I find myself borrow-ing the life force of the Earth and using it to make my work immortal. Clay is the soil beneath our feet that hold things together and brings things to life. In that very way I use clay to bring my artwork to life. My sculptural concepts are based on a very personal narrative, always revealing a story behind the object. Earth tones are crucial to uniting aspects of my work, utilizing additional media such as wood, leather, and coiled metals to express and enhance the forms. My ideas stem from the innate quali-ties of the materials that I use to express my sculptures. The tentative work, the details, the fate of how the work will emerge after the firing process, creates the journey I go on with every new concept.

Nebojsa StojkovicMy academic education includes a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. from the Academy of Applied Arts and Design in Belgrade, Serbia. From an early age I have had a great passion to create and express myself. I have always found visual art and music as my favorite form to communicate with the world. As an artist, on one hand I strip reality to its core, and on the other I create its super-structure by supplementing the already observed with my own emotions and sentiments. I feel a strong need to penetrate deeper and explore my own intimacy, my own worlds, which I describe in the language of symbols and characters.Material and media that I use for my expression are carefully chosen. I find very important to use different media to express myself, traditional and new digital. I use clay, glass, silver clay and digital media like i-phone or i-pad brushes for my paintings, drawings, and sculptures. I like to express myself creating music, animated moves.I attempt to inspire growth in my students by giving them tools to take into other art disciplines and into other domains of their life. Among these tools are a sense of curiosity, non-judgmental attitude, and a thirst for knowledge. This is integral part of my artistic practice.

Ozrenko Mrkic I paint with my own sensibility and intelligence, my heart and reasoning, with all my spiritual development, with excitement of my soul that is constantly changing and surprising…in-tuitively…childlike. I glorify human goodness, beauty, love, trust, morality, naivety, and I deride human foolishness, malice, bitterness (caused by ignorance), fickleness and hypocrisy.

I reveal myself to my inner self in every new painting I create.

B.A. of Fine Arts 1980-1985 Academy of Fine Arts, University of Sarajevo .Until now, I organized more than 20 “one-man” art shows and participated in numerous group art shows. My artwork can be seen in Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik, Museum of ZOI’84 Sara-jevo and numerous private collections throughout Europe, United States, Australia and Canada.

Ricardo MallacoPassionate about the seeing with his own eyes, what usually only the news reports, Ricardo studied journalism and worked for four years as a photojournalist in Brazil and Israel, covering daily news for major newspapers in both countries. His favourite assignments were covering protests and conflicts. In his own words: “during these assignments, I was able to learn how we humans act under stress and, this way, able to learn more about myself and strategies used from both sides of the situation.”Currently, Ricardo works as a Marketing Specialist, using concepts he learnt from photojournalism and communications, but this time, not to report the news, but to help businesses.

Rosie SchroderCreativity, whether conscious or not, I believe is a capability that most, if not all life forms engage in, from a simple unconscious adaptive mutation at the cellular level, to the complex conscious behaviours that humans exhibit. My need to create began in early child-hood and has never subsided. It per-meated my play as a child, my life in High School, my years at University, my teaching career, parenthood and now it permeates my retirement.A self- taught artist as a child, I needed to experience more as an adult. Con-sequently, I availed myself of fine art courses at York University, OCAD, Hali-burton as well as numerous workshops by accomplished Canadian artists. My artistic interests are extremely eclec-tic. I enjoy working in many mediums, styles and themes and have been blessed with many awards and sales throughout Canada, the US and the UK.Currently I have been focussing on abstraction which I find most exciting and challenging.

It’s a blissful curse for the privileged few; a much needed recovery from the overload. This can most effectively be achieved by removing oneself from an overcrowded mental space, away from daily distractions, in a tranquil environment of mystery that allows the imagination to wander.Making time to let your mind wander is time well invested!

Vivian Quiring“My joy for painting arises from both the harmony and the diversity of nature.” Primarily a landscape painter, Viv-ian Quiring’s inspiration comes from experiencing Canada coast-to-coast, and further travels. The prairies where she grew up, the east coast of Nova Scotia, Ontario where she now resides, and the countries she has explored - all influence the images that find their way onto her canvases.

Vivian has studied with a variety of talented artists who have shared their ideas as well as their delight in seeing the world through an artist’s eyes. She has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows as well as with several gal-leries. Her works are in private homes and corporate collections. Summer Afternoon

In memoriam: Nikola Ajdacic, 1946.-2013.

Nikola Ajdacic & Nebojsa StojkovicAt the opening of the first renewed Art-salon exhibition

The origins of the Art-salon“In the late 80s, in Toronto, The Association of Graduate Students of the University of Belgrade – “Singidunum” was established. In the early 90s, two of its members, young at the time, Duska and Rade Stojisin, accompanied by a few of their friends, came to me with the idea that “Singidunum” should organize the exhibition of our artists who live in Toronto. So the Art-salon was born with its spontaneous name. From the beginning, participation at the exhibition was not conditioned by the membership in the Singidunum nor by the artists’ belonging to the Serbian community. We had participants from Canada as well as from all parts of ex-Yugoslavia and even from Kurdistan. Before mentioning the organizers I must underline that without the artists there would never have been an Art-salon. Also, let me underline that organizing the Art-salon was a collective endeavour of many and I feel obligated to mention their names with a possibility to forget someone, for which I humbly apologize in advance. Besides the already mentioned, the organizers of Art-salon were: the late Đorđe Đorđević, Bisa Šćekić, Zorica Žeravčić, Emil Grahovac, Radovan Gajić, Milan Šćekić, Danica Dimitrijević, Anka i Branko Mioković, Aleksandar Petričić, Sandra Gajić, Mira Ninković.”

Words by Nikola Ajdacic, the first president of Singidunum, at the opening of the first renewed Art-salon exhibition, at the General Consulate of the Republic of Serbia in Toronto, from NOVINE, issue 1349, Toronto, February 15, 2014,

Art Salon Canada150 On invitation of the Cultural Centre Novi Sad, a group of twenty six artists, all Canadians of Serbian descent, are showcasing their work in this important exhibition as a way of honouring Canada’s sesquicentennial year.

This is our group’s first opportunity to present our work in Serbia as a collective. Some of the artists are Canadian born, others arrived as immigrants as long ago as fifty or more years. Serbia and Canada are widely separated by time and geography, so cultural differences are significant. Yet the art works exhibited demonstrate that cultural ideas, values and techniques routinely meld to reinforce and support one another. The art, presented in various media and themes, reflects the mix of Serbian heritage and Canadian experience the artists have acquired by living in their new country. From traditional approaches to abstraction in painting, from joyful ceramics to provocative video collage, from sculp-ture to sculptural textile, digital photography and installation, all will invoke recognition and revelation in this exhibition. All the artists represented in this show are accomplished visual artists who have made significant contributions to the Canadian art scene. They include recipients of the Order of Canada and of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for their work; ones whose works have exhibited in major Canadian galleries, winning various awards; and ones teaching in various schools and other venues.

This year, Canadian Serbian artists have transported their artwork to Novi Sad to bridge the distance and show the connection that binds us. Together, we celebrate this important initiative through the Canada150 Art Salon.
