As one of North America’s foremost industrialists, Henry Ford revolutionized assembly-line modes of production for the automobile. As the founder of the Ford Motor Company, he also knew that when working parts work fluidly together, maximum performance is achieved.

The very same can be said for our Projects.

I am honoured to once again be behind the wheel for ProjectWorld*BusinessAnalystWorld Winnipeg! ProjectWorld*BusinessAnalystWorld is the leading educational training conference for project managers and business analysts. In collaboration with our Advisory Board, we have structured a program that addresses the needs of your community, your organization, and of yourself. We look forward to connecting PM & BA professionals with industry leaders, practitioners and tool providers. This training and networking experience will cultivate new ideas, helping you blaze a clear path to achievable goals and best practices. In addition, it encourages you to stand out and work collaboratively with your teams, your executives and your stakeholders. If you have any questions, or require any assistance during the event please don’t hesitate to visit us at the registration desk. Thank you for attending ProjectWorld* BusinessAnalystWorld Winnipeg. Enjoy the conference!

Sincerely,

“COMING TOGETHER IS A BEGINNING. KEEPING TOGETHER IS PROGRESS. WORKING TOGETHER IS SUCCESS.” - HENRY FORD

Wednesday November 9th, 2016 | 8:30am - 9:45am Building Leadership Resilience: 5 Strategies For BAs and

PMs To Increase Their Effectiveness During ChangeMost change models don’t address how to increase our capacity to handle change. Resilience does. Resilience is the ability to remain productive, particularly during change. Research has shown that resilience can be learned. We don’t need to be born with it! In today’s projectized world of large scale change, the BA and PM’s ability to display resilience is a critical element of success. Research has shown that resilience can be learned. We don’t need to be born with it! Successful Bas and PMs channel the energy of change to assist their teams and their organizations in achieving better project outcomes. The key for us is to develop our ability to be strategic and not reactive!

Wednesday November 9th, 2016 | 3:45pm - 4:45pm What’s Your Communication Engine?

All of the work we do relies on a steady flow of well-timed, accurate and manageable information. We have tools, technology, techniques and a lot of people around us to make this information available to ourselves and others. But are we using them properly? Are using the right tools at the right time in the right place? Are we using our technology the way the work at hand requires? Are the techniques we employ doing the job? And are the people around us helping or hindering the process?

Our Communications Engine is the sum of all the parts that contribute to the flow of information in our lives. This session will allow us to think about some of the components of a well-oiled, smooth running Communications Engine driving.

Stop... Making... Sense! Choosing Progress over PerfectionFeeling stifled? Can’t seem to make any progress? As humans, we have an overriding desire to make sense of things. Our faith, our science, our projects, the people we work with - we want to know what they all mean, we want a reason for what we do. What if this overriding desire is the root cause that is getting in the way of our success? We live in a world of a faster-do more with less-now mentality, but are expected to play by rules that do not fit the model. I say, it’s time to work with a new model; stop making sense and choose progress over perfection.

So is “stop making sense” as simple as saying we should all adopt an Agile sense of mind? Do we recklessly abandon everything we know? Your instincts may be telling you that this is not going to be an easy discussion, and you would be correct. In this session, everything you have been taught, everything you have learned, will be challenged today. Are you ready to stop making sense so you can finally make progress? Are you ready to think, learn, and work differently?

Harmonizing Change Management and Project Delivery Kris Hiebert, Online Business Systems As formal organizational change management is more frequently applied to projects, the linkages and dependencies between the change team and the project team are not always clear. Effective use of analysis resources is vital to the change management effort and tight integration of the change and project plans minimizes confusion and misunderstanding. To maximize the realization of benefits and ensure high change adoption, a clear understanding of all the players is needed. Using experiences gained from leading change management efforts on large package implementation teams with integrated project and change management, this presentation will review the typical roles found on a project and identify where they can help or hinder the change management activities. A focus on the analysis roles and functions on a project team will emphasize the critical role of business analysis within change management. Examples and experiences from both agile and waterfall project lifecycles will be used as well as how integration of these efforts can be done at a program level, servicing multiple projects. Join Kris for tips on how to get the most out of your integrated analysis and change management teams that you can put into action and improve your own delivery.

BAs in the Agile Project Environment Scott Hinkson, Great-West Life/ Red River College Many think that a Business Analyst has no role in Agile projects. Learn how being a Business Analyst in Agile may be different, some Agile tools and techniques, and how to focus on requirements management in the Agile framework. Some items covered will be backlog management, Kanban boards, user stories, and story mapping.

Fail Fast – Fail Safe Paul Crosby, Bob the BA In business we are told from the very first day on the job that failure is bad. It’s as if not failing is more important than succeeding. We go to great lengths to avoid failure. We put ourselves into a make believe world where no mistakes can be made and we overwork ourselves to the point of exhaustion all in the name of ‘not failing’. Deluded in the belief that failure isn’t an option, we are at a loss on how to handle failure. What can we do? We must learn more from the failures in our lives than we do in succeeding. If we can build a culture of failing fast and safe, not only will we have great project success, we will cause less long-term disruption, impacts to our stakeholders, and costly rework. Let’s build a strategy together on how to help your organization fail in a safe way and how to learn quickly from the failure to innovate new solutions and approaches for your projects.

Integrated Strategic Project Management A Methodology For Sustainable Competitive Advantage Edwin Ferrer, CSBCB This presentation aims to discuss the merging of the Project Management Approach with strategic management into a project strategy framework. Linking Strategic Management to Project Management standards cannot be done superficially - a deep understanding of the link between the two is necessary because they both tackle different stages of organizational activities. This paper will first present some basic aspects of strategic management. Second, it will go through the project management approach, and third, it will discuss the link from both sides in establishing a framework for project strategy.

Business Architecture 101 Sandra Foster, Capstone Ridge Group Many Business Analysts are striving to change how business operates to deliver improved customer value and achieve better operational outcomes in response to changing business environment dynamics. This seminar will provide an overview of the key aspects to get you started on the road to Business Architecture.

Tick...Tick...Boom! Using Influence to Make Generational Conflict a Thing of the Past Bob Prentiss, Bob the BABoomers, X’rs, Gen Y, Z’s, Traditionalists, Always On, Zoomers, and New Millennials are just a few examples of labels given to categorize the generations. Multigenerational project teams are the norm these days, and when these “generations” come together on projects, conflict often follows. This conflict often starts with the labels that were given to begin with. Stereotypes are formed, assumptions are made, and without understanding, perception becomes reality. Unless we find a way to separate perception from reality, opinion from fact, and fiction from truth, this conflict will continue. So what can you do about it? Influence! Influence is a critical key to success in today’s complex work environments. In order to be successful we must educate and influence, to overcome perceived generational barriers in order to move forward and do the right thing for the participants and the project. In this session we will explore and understand how these intergenerational teams can work together with less conflict and more positive communication and collaboration for greater project success.

Stand Out: Volunteerism and Getting Ahead of the Curve Calvin Hawley, Manitoba Education and Advanced LearningCanada has one of the most active volunteer sectors in the world, annually contributing over 2 billion hours of service to the arts, communities, sports and health and social services. Who are these volunteers, and where do they come from? They come from all walks of life, and all sectors – individual, social services, community and corporate. For the vast majority of volunteers, they give their time and experience to make a difference and support causes and ventures that are meaningful to them. But what are the benefits of volunteerism to the volunteer? What is often overlooked is that volunteerism can both advance and enhance your career. This session will highlight the value and benefits of volunteerism for both PMs and BAs. We will explore the many avenues through which people can volunteer – in the community and at the office – and the ways in which volunteering can advance your career and personal professional development. The presenters come from the academic, private and public sectors, and have been active volunteers throughout their careers. They will share their experience and provide guidance on where and how to integrate volunteerism into your personal and professional life.

People and Group Dynamics - How To Deal With The Characters In The Room Richard Lannon, BraveWorld IncAs a professional your business acumen is important to develop. One of the skills you need is the ability to facilitate. In your case, it is all about “facilitation for elicitation of requirements” to solve business problems. In working with groups, there are a number of dynamics at play that the facilitator needs to be aware. It is helpful if you consider the different group characters and how to deal with them in the room. Know the group dynamics, the characters and what to do about it.

Time Management: Delegating to Improve your Effectiveness Gord Gibben, GPM Training Solutions Ltd. Many managers feel overwhelmed. They have too many problems and find themselves running out of time while their subordinates are running out of work. Effective managers have discovered the way to improve their time management is to delegate.

Building Believable Business Cases Randy Radic, Online Business Systems Most often some of the greatest challenges in developing strong business cases are centered around quantifiable and believable project benefits. Eliciting potential project benefits and building key stakeholder consensus around quantifiable project benefits are some of the key requirements in developing strong business cases. This presentation is a case study of a business case development to justify $45 million program with aim to completely redesign company’s commercial operations and supporting technologies.

Conflict Resolution: Applying Collaborative Techniques to Reach “Win-Win” Solutions Gord Gibben, GPM Training Solutions Ltd.Conflict is inevitable in the work place. People will disagree on priorities, approaches, solutions, issues, timeframes, roles, responsibilities, tasks, etc. Traditional management views conflict as negative and avoids (or suppresses) the conflict. The more contemporary view suggests conflict is not only inevitable but essential to successful teams.

When The Wall Hits: Profession Fatigue And The Business Analyst Teri McIntyre, Charann ConsultingWe have all heard the expression “hitting the wall” when it comes to professional athletes, that moment when their body succumbs to stress and they start to experience sudden fatigue and energy loss. But what happens when a business analyst hits the wall? What does “hitting the wall” mean to a business analyst? Consider these questions: Have you ever found the BA work you’ve produced being dismissed, ignored, changed? Have you ever agonized over a presentation or a report, and when finally delivered the reception convinced you it didn’t really matter? Have you ever sat in a meeting wondering, “why am I here” or “why am I not being heard”? If you answered “yes” or “maybe” to any of these questions, you might be experiencing / have experienced profession fatigue. Profession fatigue is a crisis of sorts, consisting of emotional, psychological, and / or physical components manifesting in various ways. The talking, the doing, the thinking, the caring. This all can and does take a toll on a business analyst, perhaps much more heavily than we are able and / or willing to articulate. Thinking your work doesn’t matter, or feeling your role is not being treated with the respect it deserves are just two ways it can manifest in your everyday work life. This presentation will relay personal experiences of hitting the profession fatigue wall as a business analyst, and the lessons learned from each hit.

Scope Visualization: Contextually Managing Project Scope Overview Paul Crosby, Bob the BA If you were to describe the Las Vegas Strip in words, would you and I both see the same picture in your minds? I will go “all in” and bet that we don’t! Now imagine trying to use words to describe the implementation of a new system to your Team or organization. Did everyone see the same scope? Nope. And did you know there are different kinds of scope? Its no wonder why people see different things. They don’t always know what they are looking at. Visualization brings to life a common understanding of ideas and/or outcomes by presenting complex capabilities and scope visually so it can be quickly understood. This interactive presentation looks at ways in which visualization can help you communicate and manage both product and project scope more effectively. When you walk away from this session you will have a better understanding of techniques, approaches and tools to make your scope more visual!

Perspectives in Business Analysis Jennifer Battan, Out of the Box BA The BABOK® Guide Version 3 introduces Perspectives - a concept that describes the various lenses that provide focus to business analysis work. The five defined Perspectives help interpret the knowledge areas and tasks in the BABOK® Guide based on the environment or possibly even the methodology in which you are currently working. How can you use the information in the Perspectives to better perform business analysis tasks? Why were Information Technology and Agile approached as separate Perspectives? Let’s talk about the Perspectives and what they mean for BAs today. We’ll talk specifically about the IT perspective, how it relates to the BABOK proper and the other perspectives.

KEYNOTE: What is in Your Communications Engine? David Barrett, Solutions Network All of the work we do relies on a steady flow of well-timed, accurate and manageable information. We have tools, technology, techniques and a lot of people around us to make this information available to ourselves and others. But are we using them properly? Are using the right tools at the right time in the right place? Are we using our technology the way the work at hand requires? Are the techniques we employ dong the job? And are the people around us helping or hindering the process? Our Communications Engine is the sum of all the parts that contribute to the flow of information in our lives. This session will allow us to think about some of the components of a well-oiled, smooth running Communications Engine driving.

Strategic Enterprise Analysis: Start Stronger - Finish Faster Paul Crosby, Bob the BA What if every project that started out was perfectly aligned to the corporate vision or mission and 100% agreed upon by everyone? Agile Boot Camp - An Introduction to the TopicOri Schibi, Procept Associates

Today’s projects often confront us with a huge challenge: continually-changing requirements. How can we estimate, plan, or even make progress when the things keep changing? Traditional project approaches suggest that we take a snapshot of the requirements as a baseline, and then use change control in an attempt to minimize the impact of any shifting requirements. Sometimes, however, these changes are a reality that the project sponsor has to accommodate. The new Agile Management methods help deal with these situations. The session is designed to meet the needs of both. Participants will learn the techniques of Agile Management through simulations and examples from real-world projects that used these methods to control changing requirements. Specific questions covered include: - How does agile differ from other approaches? - What projects are best suited to agile methods? - What are the benefits and costs of taking an agile approach? - How do team members’ roles differ under the agile model? - How does an agile approach align with project gating and other governance models? - How do we estimate if the requirements are still not clearly understood? - How do we determine the right mix and number of resources on the team when the scope is still fuzzy? - How do agile teams approach fixed price or fixed deadline projects? - How do we manage scope creep due to poorly-defined requirements?
