November 7 2012 Term 4 Week 5November 7 2012 Term 4 Week 5
Dear Parents/Carers,
Last week ended on a positive note with our annual school fete. Once again this was many
months of work by a small group of dedicated P&C members and canteen committee who
took on a variety of roles from organisation of stalls and rides, to street walks to gather do-
nations for the chocolate wheel, to distributing letters and the list goes on. I would like to
thank all those involved in the organisation of the fete, businesses and organisations who
generously gave donations to use as great prizes for the chocolate wheel, parents and com-
munity members who baked and donated goods to be sold and volunteered their time on
stalls. I was delighted to hear the feedback from both the men operating the rides and ‘Mr
Whippy’ on the general behaviour and good manners of our students in comparison to
many schools and places they attend. This certainly is attributed to the high expectations
we have of our students. The fete is not only a fun opportunity for our students, but also a
fund raising venture where the money goes back into the school to purchase resources and
equipment. Once figures are finalised and expenses taken out we will communicate the
amount raised. Thank you to you as the school community for your attendance and support
of the fete.
The Early Bird Program continued on Monday with settled children enjoying the transition
to school program. It is a pleasure to see the way the children move from their families to
the teaching staff. The welcoming and encouraging atmosphere that has been created has
already started that very important partnership between school and home. The program
will culminate next Monday with a parent and student session. We look forward to 2013
when we will welcome our new ‘Kindergartens’ to Wallerawang School.
Preparations are continuing for the Lakeview Restaurant with staff, parents and community
members working behind the scenes. It humbles me think of the time busy people are will-
ing to give. Tickets have been selling quickly. There are still some tickets left on both nights
and these can be purchased at the office. Ticket sales are now open to the general public so
if you know of people wishing to experience this unique and exciting venture please encour-
age them to purchase. Next Tuesday commencing at 10am there will be a full dress re-
hearsal. During this week the wait staff and chefs will have some time with Sharon Rush-
worth and Red Thompson to learn the ‘tricks of the trade’. As the time fast approaches the
excitement continues to build. What a fantastic opportunity for our students.

Next Monday school students Matilda Cafe and
Ebony Seymour will compete in the Regional finals
of the NAIDOC public speaking competition in
Dubbo. We wish the girls best of luck as they pre-
pare to represent our school alongside the finest
public speakers in our region, I know the girls will
do us proud.
Today I am in Bathurst at the Bathurst School
Education group Principal’s meeting. We have an
extremely busy day planned for us with a variety of
presentations, including one on the Australian
Curriculum.
I encourage students to take responsibility for their
behaviour as it reaches mid - term 4. There is a lot
happening and many opportunities for the stu-
dents between now and the end of the school year
and it would be a shame for them to miss out for
inappropriate behaviour.
All of life is a constant education.”

Thank you
The P&C would like to express a very big thankyou to everyone who attended the an-
nual school fete on Friday, it was a great suc-cess. In particular we would like to thank the teachers & support staff, parents, grandpar-
ents and carers who gave up their time to help out on the stalls, in the canteen and set-ting up/packing up and also to those members of the school community and local businesses
who supported us with donations. The fete would not be able to take place without this
valued support.
Primary by Design: A Lithgow District Primary Schools Exhibition
Lithgow City Council recently invited each primary school in the Lithgow district to en-ter two pieces of art work to create an art exhibition to be held in the Courtyard Gallery at Eskbank House and Museum. The pur-pose of the art show is to showcase local children's art and encourage the artistic chil-dren in the community.
Wallerawang School have entered a piece titled 'Bridget's Scream', inspired by 'The Scream' by Edward Munch produced by Bridget Pate during a Stage 3 art lesson & a beautiful pottery tile produced by Katelyn Mi-callef as part of the Stage 1 pottery sessions provided by Mrs Wellfare.

News from 1B
1B have been learning about different styles of writing. We have been making lots of yummy
things such as popcorn and pizza then writing a procedure explaining how we made them. We
have also been writing interesting narratives and some recounts from the Fete. Here are a few
special ones we wanted to share with you.
One Christmas morning the sparkly rainbow reindeer was dancing and suddenly she tripped on her bal-
let shoes so she tied the laces tight and danced again.

One Christmas night the fluoro green Santa was delivering presents when a present cracked. So the

painted. Then I bought a bag of fairy floss. Then I wanted a sausage sandwich and I had a cupcake. Next

Want to give your child a successful start at school?
(Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters - HIPPY)
HIPPY is a free, government funded program, new to Lithgow, Wallerawang and Portland designed to help par-ents prepare their children for school.
Materials, guidance and home tutor support are all provided. The focus is on parents spending about 10 minutes a day doing the interactive activities with their children, to build pre-literacy and numeracy skills. HIPPY aims to further develop parents’ skills and confidence to better help their children prepare for a successful start at school.
Employment opportunities are also available to parents.
Centacare requires part time Home Tutors to assist with delivering the HIPPY program.
Centacare is accepting enrolments for 2013 from families living in the Lithgow, Wallerawang and Portland areas with children in the year prior to starting school , usually around 4 years of age (Note: Children must turn 4 years on or before the 31st July 2013).
Interested parents / caregivers can contact the Program Coordinator, Leanne Walding on telephone: 6352 4868 or mobile 0409 362 663 or email [email protected]
