Celebrating Stewardship Sunday comesNovember 7, culminating our eightweek conversation on the Vital Signs ofHealthy Churches. This Sunday, ourguest speaker, Dr. Sondra Wheeler, willjoin us at 8:00 and 11:00 to considerhow our call to Christian communityinforms our daily choices in life. Let meshare with you a bit of background forDr. Wheeler.
Sondra Wheeler was educated atWesleyan University (B.A. 1979) andYale University (M.A.R 1987,Ph.D.1992.) After teaching at DuquesneUniversity in Pittsburgh, she came toWashington D.C. in 1993 to teach atWesley Theological Seminary. There, she is the Martha Ashby Carr Professorof Christian Ethics, and works inbioethics, the history of theologicalethics, and the virtue tradition as well asin biblical ethics. She is the author ofWealth as Peril and Obligation: TheNew Testament on Possessions (Wm. B.Eerdmans, 1995), Stewards of Life:Bioethics and Pastoral Care (Abingdon,1996) and a variety of articles inmedical ethics, as well as articles andcontributions to edited volumes in other
year, as we give God thanks for all theyhave meant to those of who loved them.We will recite their names in prayer andhonor their legacy of faithfulness to Godand to humankind.
Finally, we gather to celebrate theprivilege of sharing our tithes andofferings as gifts of gratitude andcommitment. We support with our liveswhat we confirm with our hearts. God iswith us in Christ. The power of God’sspirit is loosed in the world. We’ve afaith story to share with a world hungryto hear it from a community eager tolive it, for God’s sake.
See you in church this Sunday.

area of theological ethics. Sondra ispresently on sabbatical and at work on athird book. She lives in Maryland withher husband and son, and has growndaughters in New York and Chicago.
Sondra also happens to be my dear friendand colleague. Every minister should beso fortunate as to have a theologicalethicist for a friend. And she would tellyou that every theological ethicist shouldhave a minister as a friend. We providechecks and balances for one another. Theivory tower hits the streets when we talkabout practical concerns of faith life anddaily practice in our time. I hope you willjoin me in welcoming her as our guestpreacher and staying for the luncheon tofollow to greet her and all your friends atUnion Church.
The Celebrating Stewardship Luncheon isa feast of gratitude for all of us to give Godthanks for God’s abundant care for us. Thisis a ‘no strings attached’ lunch. It is a freegift, served up by a gathering of yourfriends: Eleanor Patterson, the Board ofParish Life, and others. If you haven’t yetmade your reservation, or if you thoughtyou couldn’t come and your schedule hasopened up, we will make room for you. Allare welcome at the table.
Community life this Sunday starts inworship, which flows through thecommunion table where we are allunited in faith, whatever the outcome ofnational elections this past week. Wecome to the table, bound not as agathering of like-minded individuals, butas a community of faith, rooted in thelove of God made known to us in Christ.
As a community, we will remember theSaints of the Church this Sunday. All-Saints Sunday, the first Sunday inNovember, is the time we remember inworship those members of thecongregation who have died this past

Yes, before the rumor mill gets started Pam and I thoughtwe ought to set the record straight. We are in fact moving, but we aren't moving away. After 15 years in our wonder-ful home on So Quincy Street, we've decided to expand, inside and out, and have found a new home at 233Meadowbrook Ln., just south of 55th street off of Elm.
We really didn't need the space just for the two of us, but we feltstrongly that we wanted to continue and expand our ministry with kidsand families in our home. It became quite clear that we didn't reallyhave the space to do that where we currently live, so we have takena giant leap of faith.
We closed on our new home on September 30th, but unfortunatelythe contract we had on our existing home has fallen through. So,aside from juggling two mortgages, at least for the time being weare staying in our current house hoping it shows better with us livingthere - and praying everyday that a wonderful family comes along(soon), to be great new stewards of a place that has meant somuch to us We're trying to stay positive and faithful, trusting Godthat this was the right thing to do. Please keep us, and our homeselling efforts, in your prayers. If you know anyone “who's looking",please let us know. We are really looking forward to having youshare in, and being a part of our new home!

How do I start living that faithout without feeling like a jerk or loser about it?Who is really going to win the World Series thisyear? Or the Election?Join Ellis Copeland and me every Sunday morning at9:50AM in the Union Church Library. I know thismeans you actually have to get up, pull yourselftogether, and then drag yourself over to church - but, Iknow it'll be worth it. There's no hard and fast agenda,no home work, just some good times with the guys to

CHILDREN’S STEWARDSHIP
During the last few weeks of October our Church School children and youth weregiven their own Stewardship Card. This card is provided to the children simplybecause we, as a Church, are engaged in our Annual Stewardship Campaign. St.Paul said that little children are to be numbered among the people of God, and sowe affirm them.
The purpose of this card is multi-dimensional:
• As our children are fully an integral partof the Body of Christ, their Stewardship isas highly valued by the Church as all others;
• It is an “educational” moment for thefamily, to discuss the meaning of faithfulStewardship and to begin to encourage alife-long pattern of generosity; and
• It provides an opportunity for the children and youth to learn to appreciate thatall their “wealth” comes from God; and we are responsible for giving back aportion in joyous response.
It should be understood that the Church School Stewardship Projects are certainlya part of the total Stewardship of the children and youth—and should be reflectedin how the cards are filled out. Participation in these projects are one way inwhich our children and youth are encouraged to support the ministry of UnionChurch and the Church Universal. Our November Stewardship Project (along withthe adult members) is the collection of canned goods for the Hinsdale CommunityCenter (see article on page 7).

The cookie packaging takes place onWednesday, November 10, at 9:30 am, atthe home of Cathy Schultz. The packingis simple. All we do is place four Oreocookies in a zippered plastic bag.
Oreo cookies, small donations to purchasethe cookies, and people to package thecookies are all needed. Please call CathySchultz at 630-323-0850 if you can lendsupport to this effort.
