Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

“You have mercy on all, because you can do all things and you overlook people’s sins that they may repent.” The first reading from the book of Wisdom, summarizes with poetic beauty what the mercy of God is about. The Lord offers us his steadfast love that we may turn away from sin and grow in communion with Him. That is what conversion is about, that is what repentance entails, that is the salvation He brings to our lives.

Zaccheus shows us the power of the mercy of God and the extent to which He will go to redeem us. He is not afraid to call us, to enter our households to bring His salvation, but he expects our cooperation. That is what conversion is about, to cooperate with the loving plan of God for our lives, to respond to His mercy.Notice all of the actions of Zaccheus described in the Gospel proclaimed this Sunday. He seeks, he runs, he climbs, he comes down quickly, he receives the Lord with joy, he gives to those in need, he makes restitution. That is his existential response to the presence of Christ. It is his conversion. His example shows in a concrete way how he cooperates with the mercy of God that comes to his household.

Zaccheus responds to the mercy of God. He has found mercy because he had first sought it. His seeking is already a mani-festation of the mercy of God at work. He longs for an encounter with mercy because the love of God is present in his heart, albeit in a latent state. When the love of God is patently manifest and his encounter with Christ finally happens, he responds to the steadfast love of God in a concrete way.

Moved by the love of God who had created him, Zaccheus went out to meet love incarnate. It did not matter to him that there were obstacles in the way. There were difficulties from within and from without. Some of the obstacles had to do with him. He is short in stature. Others with the environment that surrounds him. There was a large crowd blocking his direct access to Christ. The combination of the environment and his own limitations seemed an insurmountable obstacle for him to see the One whom he seeks, to encounter mercy, but he would not be deterred, he would not be stopped, nothing would prevent him from encountering Jesus, therefore, he climbed a tree. He creatively and diligently overcame the constraints he faced to see the Lord. He was not disappointed. Christ stopped to call him by his name as he passed by and stayed with him at his home. Now that the encounter had taken place, when he was called by the Lord, he came down quickly and received Jesus with joy as a welcome guest. Christ’s visit to his household moved him to further action. He will perform works of mercy and pledges to make restitution for any wrong he may have done.

Zaccheus, the chief tax collector, the leader of a gang of extorters, is the one chosen by Christ to be his host. We ought not to be surprised, another tax collector, Matthew, had been chosen by Christ to be his disciple. He had been called even as he was engaging in his dishonest trade, yet he left everything behind, changed his ways and followed the One who was passing by. He would go on to become the author of the first Gospel.

Mercy is still at work in our times. The love of God is present in our hearts because we were created by that very love. It may be dormant or latent. There are many in our midst who are not aware of the presence and action of the steadfast love of God in our lives. That is why this extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy is so important. It is a time to ponder in our hearts the love of God freely offered to us and our response to it.The Lord continues to pass by our lives and desires to be a welcome guest in our household. He extends an invitation for us to follow Him, to change our ways, to make restitution for any wrongdoings, to perform works of mercy, that we may enjoy the salvation He brings.

It does not really matter what our standing in the world may be. Both Matthew and Zaccheus were despised by their countrymen. They were tax collectors. The Lord not only calls them. He even stays at the home of Zaccheus who was in fact the head tax collector, and probably the object of even greater scorn and contempt. All that matters is what we have heard in the first reading from the book of Wisdom, that the mercy of God is offered to all of us that we may repent, that we may enjoy the salvation that Christ brings, namely liberation from the power of sin and death to enjoy the freedom of the children of God.

There may be many obstacles and barriers preventing us from coming face to face with the mercy of God, but like Zac-cheus we must be bold, courageous, creative and have recourse to the resources at hand, chiefly among them the sacrament of Confession that lifts us up from our misery and strengthens us with grace and the teachings of the Church which enable us to look into the horizon beyond our limited perspective to glance at eternity so that we can enjoy the freedom of the children of God. If we take a few steps and begin to walk towards Christ, we will not be disappointed. He will transform our lives with His presence and we will be agents of transformation too. We will taste the mercy of God, his steadfast love and make it present in the world through our own works of mercy.

ALL SAINTS DAY
