RD: First of all, I personally want to thank Country radio for their support of me and our show. Reading their feedback (CAW 11/16) was awesome. If there was a criticism or wish for things to be done differently, it was a fair assessment. You tend to stay in your own silo in this business, and I didn’t know many people at Country radio before getting involved with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital chairing their talent relations committee. As far as ratings, when you’re putting together the show, you know you’re going to be down. The Billboard awards lost 55% of its audience. The Tonys were down. The Emmys had an all-time low last year and were down another 25-30% this year. ACMs were down. To think that we were going to escape that ... The pandemic has also upended how people watch, and I don’t think I realized how much I took for granted the in-house audience. I wanted to put together a beautiful show and do the best I could to represent country music, but it’s still not the spectacle it is when you’ve got 20,000 people in the arena. though Pop has never been very song oriented, over the last five or six years it’s become such a production thing. I don’t mean to be cynical or the old guy bitching, but song content was really lacking.” Liggett has long managed rock band Blessid Union of Souls, but two years ago began working with a country songwriter, building

a catalog and recording demos. “One of the guys in the band said, ‘Hey, there’s a guy at my church you should use as a demo singer.’ That’s how I met Rayne. I wasn’t even thinking about signing an artist, but my wife got to spend some time around him because of the demo work. He’s a handsome guy, personable and can sing his ass off and she said, ‘He’s an artist.’ That was the first time I’d considered it.” “Front Seat” was the first foray into the marketplace, with initial promotion efforts led by Studio2Bee. “I couldn’t have made more mistakes,” Liggett admits. “But Skip [Bishop] and Butch [Waugh] did an incredible job getting us started. Now we’re building out the label and think we have some great people. Nashville definitely seems like a prove-it-to-me town and Country radio is totally different from Pop and Hot AC. It has definitely been

an earn while you learn situation.” Pasick met Johnson and Liggett early this year as her former employer, Riser House, was exploring adding Johnson to their roster. After she left the label, Liggett reached out. “I ultimately decided it was time to put my foot in the ground on the opportunity to create and build Rayne into a superstar,” she says. “In my time in independent promotion I’d helped do that with Zac Brown Band, Lee Brice and other artists who were on other labels. You’d get them over a hill and then move onto the next artist. This is an opportunity to keep that hat on and really grow.” The promotion department is small for now. Pasick and fellow Riser House alumna Tara Shayne are joined by OM and Pop promotion vet Dan Pearson. “We’ve split the country three ways,” Pasick says. “We have every intention of growing the team when it’s appropriate, but each of us has a different approach and the ability to cover a lot of ground.” MRR has also partnered with Verge Records, led by COO Mickey Jack Cones. “We had a need for a strong Nashville based partner, and Mickey and Verge were a perfect fit for our vision and needs,” Liggett says. And Pasick is all-in on Liggett’s vision. “I love his background

and that he’s unorthodox from a Country format perspective, but he also gets it,” she says. “We can be aggressive and still respect that some things have to be done certain ways.” The focus, for now, is Johnson and new single “Real Dang Good.” “We want to do one thing well before we try to do a few things well,” Liggett says. “’Front Seat’ was bigger than the result on the chart. From what people tell me, independent artists just don’t crack the Top 40, and he did. And then it sold like crazy and was No. 1 on Shazam in several major markets. Now we’ve learned what we need to, and here we are with Mountain Road Records round two.” Reach Liggett here and Pasick here. –Chuck Aly

A day in the self-isolated life of Summit WCYQ/Knoxville, TN Promo Coord./Afternoon Co-Host Carina:

At first, I loved quarantine! It forced me to slow down, take a beat and regroup. You don’t realize that you’re so go, go, go until you’re brought to a full-stop. In the thick of it, I completed a 1500-piece puzzle and all of my laundry was done! My house has never been so clean.

Now, I wake up and turn on my Christmas lights. Yes, my lights have been up for more than a week. Don’t tell me that Thanksgiving is first; I’m very thankful ... for my Christmas lights! Then, I prep for two shows and go to the studio and record one before heading back home to continue work. Later in the day, I go back to the station for my live afternoon show with Opie.

I was able to set up a home studio. I’m still in the process of finishing it up, but it’s nice to know that if something happens where I have to work from home full-time, I’m ready to go! Some days when I go into the station, I’ll just sit at my desk for a change of scenery, though. Not seeing all of my co-workers on a daily basis is bizarre.

If you are a face-to-face type person, it is more important than ever to stay connected with friends and family as those in-person interactions are fewer and far between. Social media has been great for staying connected with listeners, too. We want to be there to celebrate life with them and show them there is still good that has come out of

2020. Going live has also been a great connector for us to show our audience that we understand; we can get lonely and miss concerts and our families, too, and we are having the same kind of 2020 they are having.

With promotions coming to a complete halt and concerts being non-existent, we can’t lean on those things for talking points on-air and have had to be more creative. Things have been heavy this year, so Opie and I want to be an escape for people. Behind the scenes, we’ve been able to figure out new ways to communicate with the team and execute promotions.

My husband Evan and I got married in 2019, so we’ve been newlyweds through quaran-tine, and it has been awesome! I was nervous at first, but Evan and I have kept from driving each other crazy by allowing for some space. If I’m in the living room working, he goes to another room, or vice versa. We also have a roommate – our 60-pound Rottweiler/Pit mix rescue dog named Rhett Hardy. We just call him Rhett after Thomas Rhett, but we love Hardy, too, so we gave him a middle name.

The first thing I want to do when everything reopens is go to a concert! I can’t say that loudly enough! We need live music back so badly.

My new hobby is TikTok. Who hasn’t adopted TikTok during quarantine?! I don’t post much, but I can scroll for hours, and I’m not ashamed of it!

I have also become a reality show junkie. I

watch all of the House-wives, Below Deck and the Great British Baking Show. I’ve watched Outer Banks twice plus Emily In Paris and almost anything on Netflix. I hate reading, but I did read Camino Is-land during the summer, and it was a great book. My must-have snack is White Cheddar Cheez Its, for sure!

I am so thankful I get to wake up every day and do this, but because I love it so much, I can easily get lost in it and forget that I need personal time, too. I may not be able to see my family as much, but I place more value on the times I do. It has been one heck of a year, but I don’t want to look back on it and see only negatives, because there have been some positive moments, too. It’s important to hold on to those memories. Oh, and not having to wear makeup every day has been awesome!

We’ve got to look at different ways to promote our show. One way is going to be Country radio. The promotion of network TV historically happens on their own networks, but all the networks are down because of the pandemic. As a fan and viewer, I didn’t even realize the People’s Choice Awards were on. It’s hard to reach people right now, because they’re on streaming services or their phones. We’ve got to evolve, because even when you know

the number’s going to be lower, it’s still deflating. Meanwhile, I’d rather focus on the positives. I’d rather be talking about how awesome Charley Pride and Jimmie Allen were. I want to talk about Little Big Town and Ingrid Andress and the speeches by Maren Morris, Luke Combs and Eric Church. I know we’re going to talk about our safety protocols, and that’s fine. But I don’t want people to lose the fact that it was an historic night in an unprecedented year. Before we get to any of that, how do you take what’s basically an airplane hangar in the Music City Center and turn it into something that actually looks like the CMA Awards? My a-ha moment was when we [postponed] CMA Music Fest. Like everybody else, I was pretty naïve in the beginning. When we had to move the festival, that’s when it really sunk in that I had to be prepared for both the Christmas show and the CMA Awards. That’s when I started design ideas for both shows. For Christmas, it was going to a soundstage with no audience – kind of a modern-day Andy Williams Christmas special. For the awards show, it had to be adaptable to full-band, no band, acoustic or live-to-track, because I didn’t know where we would be in November. The other thing was not knowing if we’d be able to have an audience, so I had to design it so it would look fantastic either way. We could have easily taken out the tables and done an awesome lighting look, but whatever we did, it needed to feel like country music’s biggest night.

Then I started designing. I don’t draw, but I got a yellow pad out and drew the opposing stages with the center pod for awards presentations plus the booths and tables. We picked the Music City Center, because hundreds of people work on this show. Prompter, set design, lighting, me – everybody had to have their own station away from everybody else, and that required a massive footprint. When pandemic issues seem all-consuming, how do you separate from that to focus on telling the story of country music for this year? Once we had our design, I fully dove into the music, which I love more than anything. I went back and listened to every Joe Diffie record just to get his whole vibe. And, by the way, I shot all his music videos back in the day. Then, when I looked at the nominees

for Best New Artist, it was the first time in a long time every nominee had a monster record. We booked them all, and I don’t think I’ve ever done that. For the tributes, Charlie Daniels won three CMA Awards

and Kenny Rogers won five and was a four-time host. I saw that someone questioned the song choice for Kenny, and I understand that. But you’ve heard “The Gambler” a million times, and we did all those songs a couple years ago on the show when he got the Lifetime Achievement Award. When he was on the show, he was

that gentle spirit, and I wanted to invoke that in our tribute. Plus, “Sweet Music Man” was one of the few songs he actually wrote. As for Mac Davis, Reba’s manager Clarence Spalding played me “In The Ghetto,” already recorded by Reba and Darius. She’s the host, she can perform what she wants, but I was like, “Of course!” It completely made sense. Then there were two other country shows a month-and-a-half apart, and we had to make ours different. Thank goodness we had a world premiere with Justin Bieber and Dan + Shay, and Maren Morris had never performed “The Bones” anywhere. The music always gives me the answers. How do you take Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires reacting to omissions of John Prine, Billy Joe Shaver and Jerry Jeff Walker? CMA historically does not do In Memoriams and have only done one after the tragedy in Las Vegas over the 25 years I’ve been involved. So, we’re putting together the show, no sleep for two weeks, COVID protocols, a brand-new set in the Music City Center – everything is new. Honestly, it never crossed my mind to do an In Memoriam. I understand the passion from Jason Isbell because, for example, Harold Reid died this year, and I own every Statler Brothers album. I loved him and would have loved to have done something for him. I understand that passion. And not specifically calling out Jason, but I do wish some could be more kind in their responses. It’s a free country, you can and should have an opinion, but I don’t think there’s any reason to tear down the artists that were on the show. At the same time, I don’t disregard those comments. I will give it long and hard thought, and maybe we will do an In Memoriam in the future. I don’t have the answer, but they’re being heard. For those in the know, there’s very little question about the show’s safety protocols. In retrospect, do you think

An inside look at the new normal for High Valley’s Curtis Rempel and Brad Rempel: C: How have we been spending our time in quarantine? I’ve been doing a ton of woodworking, leather crafting and being a dad. B: I’ve been writing … probably even more than normal. A lot of Zoom, and the occasional socially-distanced, six-feet-apart, actual co-wrote. And building a cottage with my bare checkbook. C: [My wife, baby girl and I] start our day at 6:30am, and the other kids roll out of bed after that, but we try to quickly give our girl some milk. Then Myranda and I have coffee together before the other kids wake up. When they wake up … there is no routine; it’s just life. B: Our kids have been going to school, so my quarantine routine is pretty normal. Take the kids to school, pick the kids up, take them to practice, take them to the other practice, put them in bed, wake them up, rinse and repeat as desired. C: I’ve learned that I’m more of a homebody than I ever thought I was, because I haven’t gotten tired of just being at home, then in the barn, then at home and then in the barn. My wife’s like, “Can we please go to town to pick up milk?” B: I’ve learned that I still love my wife a lot, even though we’ve been quarantined. I still love my family and hanging out with them. Maybe because we got so used to me leaving all the time, we thought that was normal, so we were a bit shell shocked when this first started. Now we’re like, “Hmm … we actually love this.” B: Curtis has new hobby every year or your money back, guaranteed.

C: Yeah, one of my hobbies is collecting hobbies. B: I’ve been writing a lot more, or at least equal to what I did before, with a lot of Zoom action. I actually love it. I can write from the comfort of my home, and if I’m a little ADD and want to walk around, I just pick up my phone and have the people on Zoom follow me around to wherever. B: We’ve done a bunch of quarantine videos where Curtis hangs out on the wrong side of my door, and we’re separated. C: His doors all have a right side and a wrong side. B: We did a “Grew Up On That” video where people thought Curtis was a long ways away, but he was just on my front porch. It was “Grew Up On That” quarantine edition, and it was awesome because a lot of people cried. People were saying “you guys had me crying” and “sorry you can’t see each other.” We thought it was funny, and we were like, people will think it’s hilarious when it pans out and they realize that we’re at the same house, but it didn’t have the desired- C: It didn’t quite translate that way. Hey, swing and a miss. Can’t win them all. (Watch here) B: You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. B: I’m bingeing the presidential election. C: I started watching Anne with an E. B: My oldest son is 11 now, so he watches SNL with me on — you guessed it — Sunday afternoons, because it’s too late on Saturdays. B: My go-to snack is Lily’s chocolate chips made with Stevia. We don’t even turn them into

dessert anymore. We just eat them out of bag. C: I’ve been doing that a lot lately too, but ours definitely have sugar in them. the ALDI chocolate brand, what’s it, Mos- B: Más tacos, por favor. C: Nope, but it’s really good, whatever it is. C: The family time’s been really awesome, and I realized I actually love being home 98% of the time. It’s been great. B: I echo that echo and desperately- C: You just want to echo that echo? B: I echo that sentiment. There’s definitely a silver lining. Obviously, we love being on the road. We love touring, but it’s been great being with family and slowing down to remember what that feels like. I’ve been on the road since I was 12 years old — and I’m 19 now, it’s been seven years — so this has been good to get a little break. We’ll see you guys out there soon.

the blowback was about optics? It did seem like later in the show some audience members began wearing masks. Was that a production team reaction in real time to social media? That’s just how it played out. Once you got to your table, just like going to a restaurant, you had the option. Nobody said, “Take off your mask,” and nobody said, “Put it on.” All we said was, “When you get to your table, you have the option.” We also had “hall” monitors placed throughout Zone A, which was basically anything you could see on TV. If two people were too close to each other, they would come up and ask them to take a few steps back.

A producer who’s got a big show coming up asked me afterward, “Did you think about [having the hosts] explaining the protocols?” You know what? It never came up. I never thought about it, and neither did all the people who read that script. This producer said, “I don’t think

I’d have thought about it either, but we’ll learn from you and have the host announce the protocols.” Looping back around to your first response, this is the first CMA show in a while I can remember radio winners not getting an on-air mention. How does that get decided? I don’t think they were mentioned last year, either. Some years in pre-tel, we’d take a picture of the radio winners’ group and show that, but they couldn’t be in the room, so there was no picture. We referenced Musical Event just before Carly Pearce’s performance. We didn’t announce Music Video. Final thoughts? We didn’t want a great show in the pandemic era, we just wanted it to be a great show. Ultimately, it’s up to fans, radio – your readers – to decide whether we did that or not. But we tried. –Chuck Aly

“What I bring to a station and its team is my passion for this business, which drives me to get better each day. I enjoy thinking of new promotions, contests, breaks, production and imaging pieces. I never rest on being content and am always looking for new ways to connect to listeners and clients. You have to evolve, especially in the age of social media.”
