Administrator’s Perspective

Father John R. Rushofsky [email protected] Pastor 412 364 8999

New Parish Name Selecting a name for a new parish is not an easy process, and no matter what name is chosen, some will be thrilled and some will be unhappy.

Nevertheless, it’s time to embark on this part of our adventure. I need your suggestions by December 8 for a new parish name. By January 6, I must submit the 15 top names to the diocese for initial review. Those names that are acceptable will be sent back to me, and once again you will be consulted to narrow the field down to three choices, in order of preference, along with the rationale for each choice. Bishop Zubik will then make the final choice.

Any proposed name should be taken from the following:

The Most Holy Trinity or the Holy Spirit

Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the variations of his name as used in Scripture or the liturgy

The Blessed Virgin Mary, in her titles found in the liturgy

The holy angels

A saint from the Church’s calendar of memorials and feasts (there are more than 200)

All those who are designated as beatified (“blessed”)

Do not choose a name already used frequently in the diocese

Do not choose a hyphenated name of any of our current grouping parishes

Please do not send suggestions by phone, email, carrier pigeon, smoke signals, etc.

Use only the forms found in the narthex of each church or on the website or Flocknote.

Something to think about: “Today, this moment, is our chance to choose the right side. God is holding back to give us that chance. It will not last forever. We must take it or leave it.” - C. S. Lewis

In Other news: A very Happy Thanksgiving to all! We take time to be with those we love and forget the things that ultimately don’t matter….And remember that our new Sunday Mass schedule goes into effect next week-end. See pages 6 and 14 of this bulletin, also on Flocknote and on our web-site, for the full schedule….stay tuned for more news….

Neighbors North

This Month Featuring:

Janie Costello, Ministry Leader

Janie Hackworth Costello was 13 when her family moved to West View and became members of St Athanasius Parish. She had attended Assumption Grade School and Mt Assisi High School. She wasn't thinking marriage when she met all the kids in her new neighborhood. But in 1970, Janie did marry the “boy (nearly) next door”! She and Brian Costello were married by Father Berkmyer in St Athanasius Church. They remained members of St Athanasius, raising 3 children who attended St. Athanasius School. It was natural for them to get involved in Par-ish life. Janie has been a choir member for nearly 40 years, a Eucharistic Minister for 30 years. As such, she takes Com-munion to the nursing home residents as well as Heartland Hospice patients. Janie lists her “occupation” as “Mom”. At age 40, she started college. She graduated from CCAC with a degree in Early Childhood Development. Janie was very active with the CYM Co-ed Softball team as she chaperoned, coached, coordinated fund raisers, han-dled the book keeping, and correspondence. Brian also became a coach. They worked with the softball team over 15 years. Brian was an active coach and a member of Pastoral Council when he passed away unexpectedly in 2008 at age 59. Janie believes “we are directed by God through the spirit to where we should be.” She says, “If you take time to look back, you can see His plan unfold.” She continues to follow God's lead. Last year agreed to take on coordinating St. Athanasius Annual Thanks-giving Dinner, and she's doing it again this year! Janie takes great pleasure in being able to practice her faith by joining others, and being a part of these ministries. To learn more about our ministries and volunteer op-portunities at Neighbors North Catholic Community, please reach out to one of our parish offices.

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE

How is someone recognized as a king? David had been called by God and had led his people to victory in battle, so the elders of Israel’s tribes anointed him king. Saint Paul recognizes Jesus as king, for he is head of the Church. In the Gospel, his fellow prisoner recognizes Jesus as innocent victim and king. May we do the same and set our eyes on the King of kings.

--St. Jerome

Parents are Needed How we pass on the faith in this new world is a challenge for all parties concerned. Face it, religious education, in other words, isn’t just for kids anymore. It’s for all of us! It’s a life-long process, not connected in any way to the period of one’s schooling. It fits into everyday life and is not separate from the joys and sorrows, the griefs and anxieties we all face. It flows from our shared worship for which we assemble every Sunday. And it is the key to human happiness for us all. It’s the Good News we believe. Rather than being seen as a burden, a well-fashioned religious education program that encompassing the 4 churches will lead us to true peace. Perhaps we need to take closer look. Today’s Young People experience a huge diversity of cultures, foods, languages, and ideas. Their experience of religion is equally diverse. Chances are the kids rub shoulders every day with people of many other faiths. This is their culture. It all forms and affects them.. It isn’t possible to pretend otherwise. Today’s Parents probably haven’t had any serious catechesis since their confirmation classes ended. They do not feel literate in their faith. And, like their children, they’re living in a world rich in diversity and busy with many “secular” concerns. All of this is their culture and it, too, forms and affects them.

The biggest change is that, where once religion would have been a central force in their homes, for many today, it simply does not hold that place anymore. They live on the edge of parish life, many living outside the church’s marriage norms, many married to non-Catholics, and many just not engaged with their parish, except when the children “need a sacrament.” The bottom line is that we hold the secret to the Kingdom of God. It’s been entrusted to us by Christ himself, guarded by the Holy Spirit working through the faithful people of the Church, and now ours to share with one another and hand on to the next generation.

Our Lord Jesus Christ,

King of the Universe This week we are presented with two kingdoms, one on each side of the King of Kings at his cru-cifixion. Two choices are very clear. One of the thieves jeers and taunts Jesus calling him a king and wondering why a king cannot save himself and them as well. Jesus responds telling the thief that his royalty is not like that of earthly king-doms. Choosing that kingdom is dark and filled with hate and fear as it always leads to sin and selfishness. The second thief asks Jesus to remember him when he comes into his kingdom. We know to-day that he is with Jesus in heaven. The second thief “got it” well enough to ask Jesus to remem-ber him in his kingdom. Two kingdoms, one choice. Choosing the Kingdom of life and love surely means sacrifice. Just look at the scene of today’s gospel. Sometimes we find ourselves living, witnessing, and teaching the Gospel mes-sage to our children even when the majority view is different. Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel give us the courage to share our faith with our chil-dren even when society doesn’t count their input for much and even when the Gospel message is not the majority viewpoint.

Solemnity of Christ the King ~ In Christ, everything continues

in being.

Breaking Open the Word: Luke 23:25-43

You will be with me in paradise. At the crucifixion, Jesus died with the sign nailed over his head, "The King of the Jews." Jesus did not fit the common image of

the anointed king or messiah. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus promises a place in his kingdom to one of the criminals executed with him. The good thief was promised a place in

"Paradise" because Jesus' death marked the beginning of a new way to salvation.

Listen to the Word: As you hear this familiar story of Jesus on the cross, what words or phrases catch your attention? In this reading, what touches your heart? What image lingers in your minds eye? Look into Your Life: Children: Jesus is always kind to those who love him. How do you show your love for Jesus? Youth: This week we celebrate Christ the King. In the best sense of the word, a King is someone who cares for the people under his care, and also has authority over them. When have you felt Jesus’ care for you? How do you allow Jesus to have authority over you? Adults: As you think about Jesus on the cross, having compassion on the “good thief,” what lesson do you draw from it for your own life? Family Activity: Pray the Lord’s Prayer together as a family. Place emphasis on the words “your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Remind your family to be aware of God’s Reign in the world this week. The Church is called to be a sign of God’s Reign. Wherever there is violence, hatred, poverty and despair in the world, we are called to bring hope. Discuss with your family what each person is willing to do or willing to give up in order to help build the reign of God on earth, where you live. Say the Glory Be each evening as a prayer of praise for the kingdom of God.

Below are suggestions for Advent activities that may be done individu-ally or as a family. Use the Advent season as a time of focus on the Reign—Kingdom of God that is promised us as seen in the nativity past, the present in the here and now and finally in the things to come!

Happy Advent/ure! Let’s have a great Christmas! One of the keys to a great Christmas is having a great Advent. Please join the Neighbors North Catholic Community and register for the Best Advent Ever. It’s simple register at dynamiccatholic.org for the Best Advent Ever and receive an email each day with a short video from Matthew Kelly & the Dynamic Cath-olic Team The Advent Wreath Making: The origins of the evergreen wreath are ancient and probably pagan, but there

is a symbolism with the wreath and its four (3 purple & 1 pink for the 3rd Sunday/ Gaudete– Rejoice) candles that is useful in retelling the Christmas story. The circle of greenery re-minds us that God is eternal, the Alpha and Omega without beginning or end, and also of the hope we have in God, of newness, renewal and eternal life… The candles symbolize the light of God entering the world through the birth of Jesus, and the four outer candles represent a period of waiting and the birth of Jesus. The light from the candles reminds us that Jesus is the light of the world and it reminds us that we are called to be a light to the world.

This Christmas, come celebrate the birth of Jesus with All Saints Youth Theater as they perform The Promise, a full length Christmas musical! The Promise is an uplifting Christ-mas musical written by Bernadette Calvino with music by Michael Card, Amy Grant, Ber-nie Herms, and Nichole Nordeman. Following the Christmas story through the eyes of Mary and Joseph, Bethlehem, the Shepherds, and the Magi, The Promise not only shares the wonder of Christmas through the birth of Christ but, more particularly it imparts the lasting impression His birth had on those who witnessed it. With almost forty cast members and a growing cast every year, The Promise brings young people together from all over the Diocese. All Saints Youth Theater invites you to join this journey with them as they bring the first Christmas to life! Don't miss it! One weekend only at All Saints Church, 19 Wilson St., Etna, PA. Suggested donation at the door $7/person or $30/family.

Incarnation of the Lord

Liturgy of the Word for Children: is a NEW MINISTRY being explored for Incarnation of the Lord Parish. Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) would be celebrated on the first Sunday of the month starting on December on the Sunday of Advent and would continue until the first Sunday in May 2020. In order to facilitate this ministry for our youngest members of our Neighbors North Community, the ministry needs interested adults

or families who are willing to work with the children. Training and all needed materials would be provided. If you are interested in launching this vital ministry for our children, please feel free to contact Bette Weger, 412-364-8999 or email her at [email protected]. The children truly experience the love of God in their everyday lives. May the Holy Spirit open your hearts to this ministry! Thank You. All articles for the bulletin can be sent to [email protected]

Thanks and Thanks Again!

For the past several years, parishioners have received birthday cards from the parish thanks to Hilda Dax, Anna Dax, and Josie McDowell. These ladies met monthly to pick a special card and remember the birthdays of parishioners from Incarnation of the Lord. They are retiring as of December. Thank you ladies for your service to your church family!

And thanks again—to those who donate cards to the church. We currently need only ‘Thinking of You’ type cards. We have more than enough Christmas, birthday, and sympathy cards for now. Thank You!

Holy Cross Academy

First Graders are Thankful!

As we approach Thanksgiving, our first graders are ex-

pressing their gratitude for… My sisters because they hug me.

Rainbows. My parents because they are holy and nice.

My puppy because she snuggles with me. God because He made the world.

We are thankful for the parents and guardians of Holy Cross Academy. Because of your sacrifice and support, your children

are part of a faith-filled family that encourages creativity, celebrates differences, provides strong academics, and empha-

sizes service. Our school is thriving because of your endless generosity and commitment to Catholic education.

We thank you! Happy Thanksgiving!
