The HOLIDAYS are here!
Watch out . . . it’s the HOLIDAYS!
Have you noticed how often people say,“I’ll get to that after the HOLIDAYS.”
In the time between Thanksgiving andNew Year’s Day we are inundated withparties, shopping, concerts and cooking.Normal life goes on hiatus and we arethrown into a frenzy of celebration.
On the stress scale, the HOLIDAYSscore right up there with a major illness!
We can’t eliminate the stress of this timeof year, but we can set aside time to putlife in perspective. I hope that worshipwill be for you a refuge from thedemands of this season. Take a deepbreath. Nourish your soul. Take an hourto center your life in God.
I invite you to three special worshipcelebrations and one new weekly service.
The Installation Service for Rev. ThomParrott-Sheffer and me is on Sunday,November 21 from 3 to 4 pm. Thisservice is a way of witnessing andsupporting the covenant Thom and Ihave made to serve as part of thisfantastic staff. I look forward to manyyears as a member of your clergy team.
The power of INVITATION andWELCOME are the keys to vital churchgrowth!
These are not just the HOLIDAYS, theseare Holy Days. May Christ transform usin his image.
In Christian love,Rev. Julie Ruth Harley
Our Thanksgiving Eve service begins at7 pm on Wednesday, November 24. Aswe give thanks for what we have, werecommit to Christ’s mission to ensurethat everyone has food on the table.Bring a donation for the food pantry.
We have a Prayer Service at 7 pm onWednesday, December 1, which isWorld AIDS Day. It will be held in theChapel, and we will pray for peoplearound the world who are HIV+ or whohave AIDS.
And did you know that Union Churchstarted a new worship service, heldevery Saturday from 5:00 to 5:45 pm?The Journey Worship of Celebrationbegan in October and will continue eachSaturday in the Youth Room. This is notjust a “youth service” and it is not just a“contemporary service.” It IS a casualservice, and jeans, sneakers and sweatsare appropriate attire for Journey. Weeven get to sit on couches!
Each Journey service includes wonderfulmusic provided by guitar players ThomParrott-Sheffer, Ken Pletcher, Jay Eigel,Jordan Pedersen and Cara Stevens, keyboard player Kyle Mann, and singersPam Knecht, Kim Copeland and KatieSims. The music is old and new, but allof it is sacred. We share in prayer, scripture reading, and hear a sermonfrom one of the ministers at eachservice. It is a paperless service—all thewords you need are projected on ascreen. We share communion on the firstSaturday of the month.
Perhaps the HOLIDAYS are the besttime for you to try the Journey service. This is definitely the best time for you toinvite a friend, family member orneighbor to visit Union Church.

What can you do with 5 MILES of Yarn?
Here’s something we did that maybe you can’t even believe…
Take a piece of yarn. It’s thin, fragile, easy to break. Yet, strungbetween us it can connect us, weave us into something we cannotbe by ourselves, something strong, faithful and creative. Well, that’s what we did. We strung yarn around us and through us,connecting us into a giant Yarn Web; thirteen of them in total. There must have been at least 5 miles ofyarn. Then, carefully, we each took ourplace lying on the web and were launchedinto the air by those holding the web, andwere caught again on the same web.
Here are some of the statistics…
Ryan Anderson - Highest launch /Outer Space (at least 10’)Kayla Pillsbury - Goofiest picture taker!Parker Johnson - Most Chipper HopperHannah Neff - Brittney Spears can't hold a candle to you!Chelsea Wills - Best candy necklaces ever!Matt Davis - MVP Team Building Charlie Patterson - Woke up with a sleeping bag full ofleaves… (don't ask).
Everybody landed safe back home after an awesome weekend! Thanks to all (Thom, Mentors and leaders, and Youth) who puta ton of faith and effort into the weekend and made it one of thebest ever!

It is not possible to beunaware of the human andeconomic devestationresulting from the world-wide scourge of AIDS.There are tens ofthousands of orphanedchildren and almost anentire generation of young
adults wiped out by this terrible disease inAfrica alone. Infection is on the rise inAsia and South America. Closer to home, there are very few of us who do not knowof someone, child or adult, infected withHIV/AIDS.
Plan to join us for a Community PrayerService on Wednesday, December 1,World AIDS Day. We will gather at 7pm inthe Union Church Chapel to rememberthose who have died and to pray forsupport and comfort for those who struggledaily with HIV/AIDS.
We will pray for governments and privateorganizations to provide care and fundingto find a cure. Whenever we areoverwhelmed by the magnitude of aproblem, there is always prayer. It is theleast and, perhaps, the most we can do.

PEACE POLE PROJECT
You may have noticed that there is a tall wooden post in theMeditation Garden adjacent to the parking lot. We welcomethis “Peace Pole” as an addition to Union Church.
Peace poles are hand-crafted monuments erected the worldover as international symbols of peace.
Their purpose is to spread the message, “May Peace Prevailon Earth.” They serve as a constant reminder for us tovisualize and pray for world peace. Peace Poles stand sevenfeet tall when plantedand have four plateswith the inscription“May Peace Prevailon Earth” in fourdifferent languages, one on each side.
The Union ChurchPeace Pole is amemorial gift of theParrott-Sheffer familyin memory of Thomand Joan’sgrandparents: Ralphand Alice Bahr, Jamesand Rose Welsh,Vernon and RoseSheffer, and Williamand Elsa Parrott. TheExecutive Council ofUnion Church selected the four languages which areEnglish, Spanish, Hebrew and Arabic, to reflect thelanguage of the three world Monotheistic Religions:Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Spanish was selectedbecause it is a second language readily understood by manywho live and work in our community.
Please pause in our Meditation Garden and share a silentprayer, that “Peace May Prevail on Earth.”
