Hello and welcome.I am delighted that you can join us at this Open Day, where you can explore many exciting aspects and gain a sense of university life at Canterbury Christ Church University.

We know that choosing a university is one of the most important decisions you are likely to make, and one which will undoubtedly change the course of your life. For that reason, I would like to take the opportunity to tell you a little more about our University as you look around our Canterbury Campus, and speak to staff and current students.

Inspired by our Church of England Foundation, we believe that education changes lives for the better through innovative teaching, world-class research and our diverse community of students, staff and alumni. We are committed to enhancing the student experience and employability. In coming to Canterbury Christ Church, you will be joining a thriving community of more than 15,000 students. Our students enjoy studying in the beautiful and historic city of Canterbury, a World Heritage Site, as well as our other well-established campus location at Medway. We also have our Salomons Institute for Applied Psychology at Tunbridge Wells.

In exploring Canterbury today, make sure you see our wonderful city centre buildings and facilities. In 2012 we opened our St George’s Centre, home to our Students’ Union and first class student accommodation. St George’s is special because it has been designed by our students, even down to the fixtures and fittings, and is in a perfect city centre location.

We are investing significantly in the student experience, with the design of new buildings and spaces as part of our Estate Master Plan. In January 2019 we opened the Daphne Oram creative arts building on our city campus. Dedicated to 21st century creative arts, the building supports and inspires the next generation of artistic professionals and houses dynamic courses including Commercial Music, Graphic Design, Photography, Illustration and Games Design. The building adds an exciting new dimension to arts and culture at the University and to the range of facilities we offer, that in turn, is informing career opportunities in the fast growing creative industries in Kent and Medway and beyond. Do take the chance to look around this stunning new building during your visit.

We have also completed the second phase of our Estate Master Plan, as part of the development

of the former historic Canterbury prison site. The Verena Holmes Building, our new facility for science, engineering, technology, health and medicine opened for students in January 2021, bringing exciting new curriculum opportunities. In addition, 2020 also saw the launch of the Kent and Medway Medical School, training well over 100 doctors a year – a first for the region. This is a collaboration with the University of Kent and is located across our respective campuses.

Offering 21st century high-quality learning and teaching facilities, our new buildings respond to students’ needs and expectations and enable us to achieve our academic vision.

Beyond the location, you’ll be considering how university can bring life experience, academic fulfilment and firm and exciting career prospects. We’ve been helping students achieve their academic and career potential for nearly 60 years (we celebrate our Diamond Jubilee year in 2022). We are proud that we are in the top 20% for graduates in work, among large UK universities. And nearly two thirds of Christ Church graduates are in highly-skilled graduate-level employment 15 months after graduating – 9% high than the national average.

We are also a major provider in the South East for courses which lead to careers in the public services, such as teacher training, policing, health and social care. This reputation extends to our other areas of study, including business and management, arts and humanities and social and applied sciences. Many of our courses are co-designed and developed with employers.

Most importantly, though, we are passionate about education, our students and celebrating our student community. Today’s and future students, like you, are at the centre of everything we do – you inspire our teaching and motivate our determination to ensure that our physical facilities are outstanding.

We hope that you like what you see today and, if you do, that you return to Canterbury Christ Church as one of our next generation of successful students.

Thank you for booking your Open Day visit.

There’s a lot to see and do in one day. Use this guide to help you plan your day around what you want to find out. Our stands are busier between 11am and 2pm so if you want to miss the rush think about visiting stands outside of this period.

Got questions? Write them down now on the day planner on page 24.

Make the most of your trip – see page 5 for essential travel information and suggestions for visiting Canterbury, helpful if you’re unfamiliar with the City. If you’re travelling from a fair distance, why not make a weekend of it, stay and explore our beautiful cathedral city, or head to the coast?

When you arriveOur Open Day runs from 10am to 3pm and you can arrive and leave when you want – use the timetables on pages 8-20 and planner on page 24 to make sure you don’t miss anything.

At some point during the day (you don’t have to do it as soon as you arrive) please register your attendance at the marquee near Verena Holmes. To do this you’ll need your QR code which can found on your ‘here’s your ticket’ email. Don’t worry if you forget your code, we’ll ask you to complete a quick form.

Plan your Open Day.

Afterwards

Take some time to think about your experience. Write down the pros and cons. Ask friends or family who came with you for their views – but remember, it’s your decision, and you’ll be spending three or more years at Uni – so the choice is up to you.

Our Canterbury Open Day gives you the chance to explore a number of our locations across the City. Most activities take place on our North Holmes Campus.

For detailed information about how to find us, visit:

Buses run regularly and drop off at the main bus station at Whitefriars, just 5 minutes’ walk from campus.

Other car parks are signposted from all major routes into the city. For more info, visit: canterbury.gov.uk/parking

Verena Holmes, VH.3.13

Science lab tours throughout the day Verena Holmes, VH.3.94

Subject Description Time(s) Location

Where’s my room?

To find the location of a building see the campus map on page 27. Rooms are usually labelled:

• First letter/s (upper case) = building name • Second letter or number (lower case) = floor • Final number = room number

For example: Lf18 = Laud building (L), first floor (f), room 18 (18). ER.0.02 = Erasmus building (ER.), ground floor (0.), room 2 (02)

It’s easy to find your way around campus, so we’ve produced a self-guided tour leaflet for you, packed with information about the different buildings. Copies can be picked up from any of the welcome desks and then you’re free to explore in your own time. If you need help, just ask one of the Student Helpers.

Student-led campus tours are available if you prefer. You can find details of how to join one on page 8.

Accommodation is available for you to view. This is not part of the campus tour but we will have walking buses to some of our accommodation sites (please see page 8 for more information). There will be a selection of locations open – Lanfranc, Petros Court, Pin Hill and St George’s Centre. Just drop in at a time that suits you between 10am and 3pm. See the back cover for a map.

As all accommodation is occupied by our current students who’ve agreed to invite you into their homes, it’s only available to view between 10am and 3pm.

Top tipDon’t forget to bring something to

write notes and questions as you go round. You might want to ask us something afterwards – if you do, just email us via [email protected]

Kent is known as ‘The Garden of England’, and with good reason. Beautiful countryside, picturesque villages, stunning coastal scenery and cosmopolitan city life. It’s also the perfect gateway to the rest of the UK and continental Europe. London is less than an hour from Canterbury by high-speed train and the continent is within easy reach.

As a World Heritage Site, Canterbury is one of the country’s ‘must see’ destinations. You’ll be studying right at the heart of this great student city. With historic streets, ancient city walls, stylish bars, cosy pubs, exciting clubs and top-class restaurants, there’s something for everyone. And, of course, you’ll be within walking distance of one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. Thousands of students add to the vibe. It’s lively and fun. As a student destination it’s hard to beat.

Take time to look around when you visit. If you can, we recommend making a weekend of it. There are lots of places to stay in and around Canterbury.

For more information about what to see and do, go to the Visit Canterbury website www.canterbury.co.uk

The beautiful Cathedral, historic St Augustine’s Abbey, Westgate Gardens and the Roman Museum.
