Will We Be Successful in Workforce Development
As we continue into the Christmas season, we are seeing many of the “black Fri-day” deals appear much sooner than ever before. Retail as we know it has perma-nently changed. Some of our largest retailers in the country are no longer called stores, but internally are called “distribution hubs.”
As we move into the future, the customer experience we all know in retail will shift to more automation, less customer experience and connection and a push toward online sales. Sadly, one of the simple causes this is workforce. It is hard to staff a store if no one is applying. It isn’t quite this simple, but if you enjoy purchasing things for you, your family and your friends and you find yourself short on cash this year, work is still an option. We know our government has made a valiant ef-fort to replace that income that is still available to be EARNED in our community, but it is up to us as leaders, business owners and officials in our community to set the example that Morristown/Hamblen County is and will continue to be the job leader in our region. Being the job leader is wonderful, but more importantly, over the next few years, will be our community’s success in workforce development.

Chamber Honors Industry at Appreciation Breakfast The Chamber hosted the Annual Industrial Appreciation Breakfast on Wednesday, October 27 to the thank the manufacturing, distribution and industry service companies in Morristown and Hamblen County. Nearly 140 industry representatives, community and elected leaders, as well as event sponsors attended the event, held at First Presbyterian Church. Morristown Mayor Gary Chesney and Hamblen County Mayor Bill Brittain both expressed their apprecia-tion to the industries for their contribution to the success of the local economy. R. Jack Fishman then conveyed his gratitude for the industrial presence in our community. Since the event was “paused” during 2020, Fishman recognized those industries that had made a significant investment and created new jobs during both 2020 and 2021. He announced that reported capital investment in land, buildings and equipment by industrial operations totaled over $181 million for the last two years, creating come 700 new jobs. He also recognized those companies celebrating a significant anniversary.
