Welcome Pole We were thrilled to unveil our school’s welcome pole. Ivan Rosypskye has created another beautiful pole for the school district.
The pole was carved with the students of Henderson last year, but due to some vandalism needed some extra time to finish and repair before being ready. His work is worth the wait!
We celebrated her arrival with a ceremony incorporating traditional Coast Salish songs and practices, as well as a description of her jewellery and positioning by Ivan. This includes the copper labret on her lip, and facing the ocean to welcome travellers.
Remembrance Day Assembly
Our annual Assembly will be November 8 at 10:55. All parents and community members are welcome to attend
to help us honour our veterans.

Safety with Candy by Lyndon Jacques It is important for children to remember that on Halloween when you get given candy, don't eat it until you get home and your parents check to make sure its safe. It is also important to remember not to eat too much at once or you can feel sick, and it is also very bad for your teeth. With that being said, candy is fun. This year, consider making many little bags of candy that you and your friends can enjoy throughout the year.
New family dog by Jolene Gussman
The Gussmans got a new puppy, and it is super cute. Her name is Snickers and she loves to play with toys. The 13 week old pure bred Jack Russel was picked up in Vancouver, BC on October the 3rd. She is a cute little bundle of fur with a white body, brown around her eyes and a beautiful black face. Dogs are nothing new for the Gussmans, they already have two, super nice, Pitbull terriers. The family is extremely excited and Snickers is defiantly loving her new family.

Parent Teacher Conferences School was not in session on November 1st as this day is dedicated to parent-teacher conferences. An appointment label with your allotted time was placed in your child’s agenda last Monday.
This is a great time to sit down with the teacher and find out how your student is doing and ways to support them at home. Teachers are pleased to explain the portfolio assessment answer any questions you may have. Things you could ask your child’s teacher:
How do you best prefer to communicate with me? (Email? Phone? Text? Notes? Agenda?)
What do you think are the academic challenges for my child?
How is my child doing socially?
Is my child on grade level for reading? What about math, science and writing?
What can I do at home to support what you’re doing in the classroom?
Thank you to all those who made time to meet with your child’s teacher.
Dress for the weather Fall weather is upon us so please make sure your student is dressed appropriately for the weather.
We try to go outside at recess and lunch regardless of the weather so please send them prepared and perhaps have a spare set of clothing in your child’s backpack.

I am in awe of the generosity and hard work of this community and school. To watch the Henderson Haunted House unfold for the first time was an honour, the hours that Darren Nivens and Amber Hodgins put in was humbling. The volunteers that showed up throughout the week leading up to, and the days of, were so enthusiastic—it was a real pleasure to be a small part of it. Thank you so much to the Henderson families that were able to come and help, I am sure more will be a part of it all next year as word spreads. It was definitely not an ordeal, it was fun—I promise. The students that come from Brooks, and other schools to take part really gave their all, and the Henderson alumni parents and community members were also so committed. Thank you, thank you, thank you... to all the volunteers, to the businesses that donated materials for the silent auction, to everyone that makes this event happen.
Many thanks to:
Volunteers
And also thank you to the staff and students for disruption to the school week.
Kiwanis Club
Once again Kiwanis volunteers hosted a fabulous concession. Thank you.

Book Share
We held another book share in October with great success! This is when all of the teachers select a picture book they enjoy to share. Students get to select which story they will go hear. It is a great opportunity for all of us to enjoy literacy together.
Townsite Brewing is donating $1 per Growler sold for the months of October and November to
James Thomson Elementary and to Henderson Elementary.
