FOCUS ON WORSHIP
ALL SAINTS DAY: All Saints’ Day is November 1 every year, but it is celebrated on the first Sunday in November. All Saints Day is a universal Christian Feast that honors and remembers all Christian saints, known and unknown. It is a day when we commemorate those we have lost as well as the Christians who have lived before us and have testified to their Christian faith. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saints Day celebrates the whole communion of saints and the baptized people of God, living and dead, who make up the Body of Christ. It is the custom of many congregations to remember the faithful who have died. This may include a reading of the names of our loved ones who have died during the past year during the past year. On this day, we may also sing a special “All Saints Litany,” The color of the day is white. All Saints Sunday falls on November 3rd this year.
CHRIST THE KING: This is the last festival Sunday of the Church year. It falls on November 24th this year. This festival celebrates the kingly rule of Christ, who was enthroned upon the cross and will return as humankind’s ultimate sovereign and judge. As we gather at the Table of Christ, we wear the crown of baptism and trace Jesus’ royal sign (the holy cross) over our brows and bodies. We leave Worship strengthened to serve those in need. We look for the day when all people will see Christ with the scepter of peace and the crown of justice. The color of the day is white.

When my grandparents became ill, my father took his family into their house - the very house where he was born - to care for them. I was three years old but I can still remember a memory flash of that day: standing in the kitchen looking up at all the tall people as they hauled our belongings through the kitchen door. My aunt took my brother and me out to play to get us out of the way.
Within a year my grandfather passed away and my grandmother continued to live with us for the next eight years between extended stays at the hospital for a variety of illnesses. Once a week she would walk a mile to the bus stop for a trip downtown and return with a bag of honey dip doughnuts for us to eat. She lived on a rather meager social security check but she spent most of it on my brother, sister and me.
In the last year of her life she entered into dementia which was both confusing and frightening to me. Her memory would come and go and there were times when she would look at me and ask me who I was.
Thanksgiving of 1953 arrived and I recall my mother giving my grandmother some simple tasks to do knowing that she would want to help. Everything was going so well and when we finally sat down at the table, she looked around with tears in her eyes and told us how happy she was to have us all around the table with her. After our plates were full and we were ready to eat, she stared at all of us and demanded to know who we were and why we were eating her food. In a sudden loud outburst she told us to get out of her house - now! My body froze in fear and I felt my father's hand on my shoulder. In less than a minute my grandmother smiled and asked for the cranberry dish to be passed to her.
She died the following year on her birthday. After the funeral our house was packed with relatives and friends so I wander outside and sat on a hill that over looked the sprouting asparagus that was coming up in the bed that my grandfather had planted many years ago. I wondered; what grandmother was in heaven: the one that could remember or the one who knew no one when she died. It was then that my very pious aunt came out and sat next to me. She put her arm around me and told me how happy my grandmother must be right now seeing God and being with her husband and the three children she had who died in infancy.
And so it was that I learned on that day what a wonderful thing it is when someone's faith comes to your rescue. The confusion of Thanksgiving Day, 1953 was replaced by a new vision of my grandmother gathered around a new table remembering all things with a clarity that would never again be taken away.
In Peace, Pastor Fred

St. Luke is blessed with abundant musical talent and this month we put the spotlight on an exceptionally dedicated member of our music ministry and showcase her talent and dedication to our wonderful, warm church.
Many folks know Suzanne Weeks (aka Suzie) as the bubbly, witty, helpful soul who is often at church filing for Tammy; singing in the choir; or ringing handbells. But did you know that she is an inveterate traveler? She will often head into the wild looking for adventure but sometimes the adventure finds her – please read on… It was fortunate that Suzie had played bridge for the past 51 years when on her recent Alaskan vacation, she was snowed in and played bridge for 2 straight weeks with an all-male dance troupe whose tour bus had been stranded. During her long ordeal her motto was: “Don’t get too fancy, just try to bid your longest suit...” Hailing from Gettysburg, PA, Suzie settled into the Richmond area and worked for 30 years at the (Bellwood) Defense General Supply Center (where she may or may not have been a secret agent…) Suzie is known for her wit, charm and hard work. In retirement she volunteers at The Garden Schoolhouse where she dazzles the children with her pyrotechnic arts & crafts. One child had been heard to scream (while running away from a fire) “Wow! Ms. Suzie sure can make pumpkins explode!” Hopefully this article has shed some light (and given you much to think about…) on one of our supreme sopranos: Suzie Weeks! CORRECTION: In the last newsletter it was reported that Joe Bucher was from Indiana, but he says he grew up in Dayton, Ohio. That may also be a mistake – no one thinks Joe has grown up… UPCOMING EVENTS: The CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PAGEANT will be held on Sunday, December 15th at the 10 am service. There will be two rehearsals: Saturday, November 16 at 9:00 am and on Wednesday, December 11th at 5:30 pm with a pizza dinner & rehearsal for the children participating. An ADULT CHOIR CHRISTMAS CANTATA will be performed on Sunday, December 22nd at the 10:00 am service. The 4th ANNUAL SUMMER MUSIC CAMP will be held July 13 – 17, 2020. Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information about any of St. Luke Music Ministry programs. Peace, Richard Barnett Director of Music 804-272-0486 X3, [email protected]

Worship Service Assistants
Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. Every Sunday, our church members participate in our worship service as Acolytes, Assisting Ministers, Crucifers and Ushers.
We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services and communion, Altar Bread Bakers and other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy.
In our music department, we have Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members and all sorts of Musicians. We are so thankful to have these folks assist us every week but we can always use more help.
If you are interested in serving the Lord at our church and would like more info about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship and Music Ministry, we would love to hear from you.
Please contact the following people for more information about Worship: Pastor Fred Marcoux, [email protected] Vince Reedinger, Worship/Music chair, [email protected]
For more information about our chancel choir, handbell choir or the music department, please email Richard Barnett, our Director of Music at [email protected].

SANCTUARY FLOWERS
Would you like to place Flowers
on the Altar on Sunday?
If so, please sign up on the
Flower Chart in the Fellowship Hall.
Questions?
Please see the information below
or call the Office at 804-272-0486.
Altar Flower Dedications
The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran Church. Flowers are used to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend Worship services. Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a special person, an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special event. More than one person may find a certain date important so flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.
If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers are yours to take home after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or homebound members. You may sign up on the chart located in the fellowship hall.
Please return the container the flowers are in to the church at your convenience.
The 2019 Flower Chart Calendar
The 2019 Flower Calendar is hanging up in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday Altar Flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. Just let us know and we will automatically add your info to the Flower Calendar each year. If you have any questions or would like more information about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy at 804-272-0486 ext. 1 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.
THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone that signed up for our open Altar Flowers dates. We appreciate it.
We now have at least one arrangement of flowers for every Sunday for the rest of the year.
Please remember, Altar Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.
We love when we have two arrangements for Sunday morning so please feel free to check out the chart!
If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. The Altar Flower Chart
is hanging in the fellowship hall near the kitchen.

Our First Chilly ~ Chili Halloween Party October 27, 2019 from 4:30am to 6:30pm
On Sunday, October 27, 2019 we held our first Chilly ~ Chili Halloween Party, for all ages. Colder weather meant we all wanted some Fall food so we had a Chili Bar with all the Fixin’s and other awesome foods too. We had a cake walk, Trunk or Treat for the kiddos, as well as just good old-fashioned fun and fellowship for all. There were games for young and old alike, plus prizes for the best costumes. Members and friends were invited to wear a costume, their favorite Team’s hat or t-shirt or a colorful fall outfit. Everyone was welcome to bring their friends and neighbors too. We all had a great time!

ADULT FORUM CLASS FOR 2019/2020
This year our Adult Forum will focus on a study of the Old Testament. The basis for the study will be from The Great Courses®. Each week will start with a 30 minute DVD lecture by Professor Amy-Jill Levine of the Vanderbilt University Divinity School. A widely sought-after speaker, she has delivered talks on biblical subjects and issues to academic and nonacademic audiences around the world.
Professor Levine’s materials have been well received by our Adult Forum attendees. She gives a wonderful lecture and offers new perspectives to the Bible passages she teaches. The lecture will be followed by 15 minutes of discussion. Each week will complete a topic, so there is no problem if you miss session.
ADVENT ADULT FORUM: On December 1st, the First Sunday of Advent, we will begin a new DVD Study entitled “The Case for Christmas” based upon the best selling book by Lee Strobel. We will continue with this study for all the Sundays in Advent, December 8th, December 15th and December 22nd. Following Advent, we will return to our study of the Old Testament. Demonstrate your thankfulness this season
Now, with fall and harvest time drawing near, people start to reflect upon the things they are thankful for and how they can show their gratitude by supporting others. During this time, St. Luke Lutheran Church anticipates and relies on a seasonal increase in contributions. It is through the donations of every individual and family in the congregation that we are able to carry on our ministries now and throughout the year. One way Thrivent members who are eligible to participate in the Thrivent Choice® Program can do this is by directing Choice Dollars® to their churches. The Choice Dollars grant funds your church receives will help you continue to minister to others, strengthen communities and change lives. The Thrivent Choice (SM) program lets members recommend where some of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' charitable outreach funds go by directing Choice Dollars (SM). The amount of Choice Dollars designated to you depends on the type of Thrivent Insurance products you have that qualify. If you need a convenient way to make recurring contributions or plan to make an additional gift before the end of the year, we encourage you to check out Thrivent’s Choice Dollars program. Do you need additional information? Log in to Thrivent’s website, www.thrivent.com/thriventchoice to find out more. Once there, you can choose how to direct Thrivent Choice Dollars to send them to a charity of your choice. When doing so we ask that you consider designating St Luke Lutheran Church. Thank you for your generosity and support.
LOST AND FOUND ITEMS
Are you missing something?
It may be in the Lost and Found box. Please stop by the church
office and see if we have something that belongs to you or your family.
St. Luke Lutheran Church Office: 804-272-0486 Email: [email protected], Web: www.stlukerichmond.org
Please consider bringing your family and friends to Church. Everyone is most welcome at St. Luke. Please have them fill out a Visitor Card (located in each pew rack or from any usher) and return it in the offering plate. This way we can get to know them and see what their needs are and what they are looking for in a church. If you are a new visitor and if you would like more information about our church, Pastor Fred Marcoux will be glad to answer any questions you might have about St. Luke, including church membership. You can also speak with a member of our Evangelism committee. Ann Witthoefft: 804-272-9584 or [email protected] or Millie Olson: 804-739-5448 or [email protected]. Please feel free to contact the church office at 804-272-0486 ext. for more information. You can also email the office at [email protected]

St. Luke Lutheran Church and
Kroger Community Rewards Fundraising Program Update
Your attention please. Last August, Kroger updated it’s Kroger Community Rewards program. It’s time to double check your online Kroger account and see if you have St. Luke designated to receive rewards from your grocery shopping. What is this program? You can use your regular Kroger Plus Card and raise money for our wonderful church. All you have to do is go online to www.kroger.com, login to your account. After doing so, click my account and Community Rewards is listed on the left. Click Community Rewards to check if you have St. Luke as your donation organization. If you don’t, please consider registering your individual Kroger Plus Card to St. Luke’s account by clicking Enroll. You can search for St. Luke Lutheran Church by name. Our Kroger Community Rewards number is SX749. Once you enroll your card, all linked Kroger Plus Cards in your household will also begin to earn funds for St. Luke. Restriction do apply: fuel, alcohol, tobacco, stamps, lottery tickets, money orders, sales tax and some pharmacy purchases are excluded. What do I have to do? To put it simply, please go online and register your regular Kroger shopping card, your Kroger Plus Card with the Kroger Community Rewards program and designate St. Luke Lutheran Church as your organization. After that, each and every time you shop at Kroger and scan your Kroger Plus Card, St. Luke will earn rewards for your purchases. Please note: If you do not yet have a Kroger Plus card, they are available at the customer service desk at any Kroger. You will need to sign up at Kroger.com and create an account (if you haven’t all ready done so) before you can enroll your Kroger Plus Card in this program. If you need help signing up online with your Kroger Plus Card, someone from St. Luke will be happy to assist you in doing so. Please ask for help if needed.
Thank you updating your information yearly with Kroger and for participating in our fund raising projects.
