News this week

Another week in the books, as Week 7, Term 4 comes to an end. Our last IGA barbecue for the term went exceptionally well. Thank you to Pam, Wendy & Chad Mitchell and Vanessa and Malcolm Williams for their expertise behind the barbecue!

We made a significant profit on Saturday at the IGA barbecue, as one anonymous Ungarie resident made a $1000 donation to UCS. We are incredibly grateful for your support and I hope you enjoyed the tastiest rissoles in the state! On Wednesday, Mrs Rattey & I attended a professional learning session on Strategic Financial Management in Griffith. The way Public Schools will be asked to budget, purchase items and report on financial matters is significantly changing. It was an intense day of learning, but definitely worthwhile going into 2015 and beyond.

Our whole school focus on How2Learn has again been full steam ahead with our focus still on Reflectiveness. Our primary and secondary teams have had students focusing on the area of Distilling. Distilling is the ability to draw out useful lessons from experiences and identify features that are likely to help you elsewhere. Both the students and staff are adapting to this new vocabulary and it is great to hear this language being used in classrooms and on our weekly habit of mind awards.

Next week, intensive swimming starts for our Kindergarten to Year 6 students. This will last for two weeks. Students will be travelling in our school bus to avoid walking to and from the pool in excessive heat. See you soon!

They will see a number of historical artefacts such as Captain Cook’s shoe buckles and a letter from a convict to her family. Notes and money are to be returned by Monday 24th November.

Hats Students are reminded they must wear a hat at school when outside. The weather is warming up and sun protection is extremely important. Remember no hat, no play!

Intensive Swimming Intensive Swimming lessons will begin on Monday. There are still a small number of students without permission notes returned. Please return these ASAP. $1 for transport to the pool was included in the total cost of Intensive Swimming. For non-season pass holders it is $17 pool entry and $1 for transport. For season pass holders it is $1 for transport. During Intensive Swimming lessons all students must wear a rashie or a t-shirt. Please note there will be no cancellation of Intensive Swimming lessons for rain.

A Splash of Colour When you next visit our school you’ll notice the new hanging pot plants. This has added a welcome splash of colour to our school. Thank you to Jason and Nicky Lewis!

Distilling

Secondary Session On Monday, Years 7-11 gathered in the

Library to participate in a How2Learn session on Distilling. Mrs Wason kicked the session

off with a pre-test to find out what students thought the term referred to and to show

them that even the teachers were a bit unclear on its definition in terms of

How2Learn! Students were then led through a series of short activities by Mrs Wason &

Mrs Ward, based around finding and demonstrating the main ideas within a couple of different texts. The session finished up with a post-test activity, where students

were able to show that they have a hold of the main idea of how to use their distilling

muscle in their learning.
