Message from the President

I am delighted to announce the nomination of a new Print Director, Al Koskie. Al has extensive experience with printed photography, and has served on the board of the Northwest Council of Camera Clubs. He is supportive of our ideas in changing print night to a more interactive format.

We also have been invited to represent our club in a gallery at the Maplewood Presbyterian Church, where we meet. I would encourage you to submit before Nov. 30 to [email protected] up to three images in the catego-ries of Nature, Wildlife, and People From Other Cultures and name the files “church gallery”. The church will choose the images. They will not be for sale. The prints can be 8X10 up to 16X20, but not matted or framed, and must be mounted on black foam core.

Thank you to Bruce Coxley, Henry Heerschap, Lauren Heerschap and Bob Joiner for taking portrait photos of the Eagle Wings Dinner for developmentally disabled adults on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014. It was a Halloween Hoot as these adults were reunited with friends from a group home they previously lived in for 15 years.

We are using a sound system on digital night, and are making improvements to the equipment. Bob Stahl gave an ex-cellent presentation on The Poetry of Light; and at last print night Bruce Coxley presented videos on Elements 12. Our Holiday Party will be on December 8 this year, and we will pass the hat to continue the tradition of collecting funds for dinners to the homeless.

Respectfully Submitted,

Lauren HeerschapPSCC PresidentUseful Web ResourcesPhotoshop Elements At the October Print Night, Bruce Coxley showed us some of the many capabilities of Photoshop Elements. With every new version, it creeps closer and closer to its big brother in features and usability. Unlike Photoshop CC, Elements has a number of unique features that make it easy for the beginning user to get great results. As users gain skills, they can “take off the training wheels” so to speak and explore the many advanced tools. Here are some free on-line resources for further training:Adobe has a series of short to-the-point videos on how to accomplish different tasks in PSE. http://tv.adobe.com/show/learn-photoshop-elements/Lots of free videos available at Photoshop Elements Techniques:

Many video and written tutorials can be found at Essential Photoshop Elements: http://www.essential-photoshop-elements.com/

PhotoshopFor those using Photoshop (Creative Suite or Creative Cloud versions), one terrific new free resource is Phlearn.com. They have free videos on Photoshop and Photography as well more as more advanced “pro” courses that can be pur-chased individually. They cover lots of basic techniques such as retouching, use of layers, and healing and cloning as well as more whimsical things like creating snow or changing hair color. Well worth checking out: http://phlearn.com/category/photoshop

Minutes for the PSCC October 20, 2014 Board of Directors Meeting The meeting was held at the Maplewood Presbyterian Church and was called to order by President Lauren Heerschap at 7:02 pm. Present were Board members, Bob Joiner, Maurice Tugby, Dave Patzwald and Henry Heerschap, Absent was Yvonne Shimek. We had a quorum for this meeting.

Financial report – Yvonne was not able to attend this meeting, see note at the end.

Henry made a report on the status of a new sound system. He said that the staff at Morgan’s Sound discussed a cordless system with 2 speakers which would be in the $1,000.00+ range. Bob reported that he had contacted the minister and discussed the church might consider a new speaker system in the room where PSCC meets. The current system needs a new cord to work. Henry made a motion for PSCC to purchase a extension cord for the sound system. The motion was 2nd by Bob and passed unanimously by the Board.

Bob reported that Elements 12 program will be presented by Bruce Coxley for the education portion of the 10/27/14 print night.

New business – We discussed the status of new members and dues. Morrie reported that we have 72 club members. We discussed that some new members pay initial dues but then did not attend PSCC meetings. There is no requirement in the By-Laws for required attendance. The only requirement is that PSCC membership is required to submit images. Membership is also required to be a judge. Henry also resolved some confusion on the Meetup Webpage; the “join” button is to join Meetup.com, not PSCC membership.

Henry reported that he and Lauren had attended a meeting of the Seattle Photographic Society Print Night. He said that club takes a batch of prints to each of 3 tables, which each have a small easel and light. The small group at each table makes comments on the photos. Then the prints go over to another table to be judged. At each table is a scribe that writes down the comments on paper for each print. The prints are judged separately by three judges and given a score. The score on each print is given with comments back to the maker. You only hear comments from people at your own table. Henry said that we will have a conventional print night on October 27, 2014. Lauren made a motion that we try a new format for November Print Night and Henry will be in charge of the new format. Motion 2nd by Bob and passed unanimously by the Board.

The Board read an mail from Marc Weinberg with ideas to revise the structure of digital night. The Board decided to take Mark’s suggestions under advisement.

We discussed how we might have a selection of 1st place of photos if there is a tie for first place. No decision was made at this meeting.

Judging – Henry will give judges and commentators training in January 2015. The list of criteria for judges to consider that is laminated is ready to go, and will be put out for the judges on digital and print night.

Bob and Henry discussed with the Maplewood Presbyterian Church minister for prints to be displayed at the Church (for display and not for sale). Nature, wildlife, and people from other cultures were discussed as appropriate for these dis-play prints. A motion for this project was made by Bob, 2nd by Morrie, and passed unanimously by the Board.

Morrie made a motion that during our December party we solicit money from club members and that PSCC match the amount donated (up to a maximum of $200.00) for a dinner for the Homeless Program that meets on Friday’s at the Maplewood Church. Motion was 2nd by Lauren and passed unanimously by the Board.

The meeting was adjourned by President Lauren at 9:00 pm.

Respectively submitted by Secretary Maurice Tugby

Note about financial report: Yvonne sent the September financial report to Lauren, but it was overlooked and not presented at the Board meeting. Expenses for September include the usual rent, $225 for special speaker Robert Stahl, and $70.35 refreshment expense which covered the cake and other treats for our 30th anniversary celebration on Digital Night. Income include $200.00 for dues and $24.25 for refreshment donations. YTD net income is $331.42.
