My devotional last week stirred a memory for me. It quoted a famous line from the movie Jerry Maguire. When the two estranged lovers are reunited, one says to the other: “You had me at hello.”

Like the characters in the movie, how we enter the conversation with God and with each other sets our attitude for the relationship as a whole.

How do you come to worship? Tired? Stressed? Ready for a fight? If we open ourselves up to listening and compromise and cooperation, we will find ourselves more thankful for the conversation.

When people come to the worship table already grateful and feeling blessed by God, worship becomes a holy shared experience.

When warring nations come to the conference table with respect for each other’s rights, plans for co-existence are more likely to be established and sustained.

When the people we elect come to the tables of government believing that compromise for the common good is more important than partisan politics, our nation is stronger.

When people torn apart by reckless misdeeds or grievous misunderstanding approach each other with the understanding that no relationship, family, or community can function without forgiveness, we find peace.

The presence of God really never has to be invoked. We only need to acknowledge and celebrate the amazing possibilities that God already has in place because God has us at Hello!

Blessings,

Pastor Sue

New Al-Anon Meeting

When: Thursday Nights Where: Thomas Place Retirement

Community Dining Room (Use sliding patio doors to the right of the entrance) 560 SE Brick Drive Waukee

Time: 7:00 to 8:00 pm

The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope, in order to solve their common problems.

We believe alcoholism is a family illness, and that changed attitudes can aid recovery. Al-Anon is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, organization, or institution; does not engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any cause. There are no dues for membership. Al-Anon is self-supporting through its own voluntary contributions.

Al-Anon has but one purpose: to help families of alcoholics. We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics, and by giving understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic.

As of November 1st, there are only 54 days until Christmas. There is so much to do as we prepare our hearts for the Gift of the Christ Child. This Advent season we will be celebrating the Gifts of Christmas as we journey toward Bethlehem.

Christmas gifts come in all kinds of sizes, shapes and styles. This Christmas, we will meet five people who discover the true gifts of Christmas:

November 30th - The Gift of Expectancy December 7th - The Gift of Grace December 14th - The Gift of Reconciliation December 21st - The Gift of Adoption December 24th - The Gift of Jesus

Each gift will help us enter the Christmas season with hearts overflowing with the love of God. This Christmas, let’s focus on the

gifts that last… the gifts that matter.

The Youth will have an opportunity to present the Christmas Story on Christmas Eve.

A Superhero Christmas is the story of six Super Heroes in search of baby Jesus. It’s fun and funny – but with a serious message about how we each find Christ.

Please let Pastor Sue know if your child will be available on Christmas Eve. Oh… and here’s the fun part… just after Halloween

is a great time to pick up a superhero costume at a discount.

We will need: Superman Spiderman Hulk Batman Cat Woman Wonder Woman

Pick up a costume for your child and join the fun!!

Share Your Feast 2014 THANKSGIVING Food Drive

Waukee Area Christian Services is preparing for its annual Share Your Feast food drive and we need your help. Most of us are getting all excited planning for our families to be together and competing as to whom can make the best turkey and pumpkin pie. Unfortunately, not everyone is so lucky. There are many families that cannot afford a Thanksgiving dinner. What can we do to help?

The food pantry will be giving families a special Thanksgiving Feast food box and we need your help to fill them up. Items needed include: boxed stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, relishes, ingredients for green bean casserole and pumpkin pie, saltine crackers, corn muffin mix and fruit. Cash donations will be used to provide each family a turkey or ham and grocery store gift card to purchase the perishable items to complete their meal.

Donations are needed by November 17th and can be dropped off at Westview Church Mon-Thurs 9-2pm or at the Food Pantry (lower level Westview Church) Mondays 4-6pm & Thursdays 9-11am. The church is located at 1155 SE Boone Dr., Waukee.

Remember that VBS song, “I am the church! You are the church!

We are the church together!” All of us are given wonderful gifts by the

God who created us. And we can use those gifts to serve Waukee Christian Church together.

Can you count? Volunteers are needed to help count the morning offering. If you are an Elder or on the Board, can you help in the rotation? George Risinger and Jerry Woods have been serving for over a year, but it means they often miss fellowship time. Please consider taking your turn and visit with George or Jerry.

Can you click? We only have a couple of people who operate the slide show on Sunday morning. It’s very easy! Just push a button.

Training is provided. Let Pastor Sue know if you can take a turn in the AV booth.

Respite Volunteers? Can you take a turn providing respite for Don & Evelyn Dowell on Friday mornings? Call the office for more details.

We would love to get more and

newer pictures of worship, fellowship,

and Sunday School to put on our

website and Facebook page.

There is a camera in the office

that you can use. Feel free to snap a

picture of your class... an activity... a

gathering... a ministry... children's

time... choir anthem... musicians... the

pastor… the congregation... our

beautiful building! Take a picture and

return the camera to the office.

Leave a note on Lanita's desk so we

can download.

No memory card is needed but be

sure to check that the batteries are

charged.

Thanks for being the eyes of the

church!!

Christian Love and Support goes out to Shari Burgus upon the loss of Jon Butler.

We also extend our Christian

Love and Support to Audrey MacRae upon the loss of her brother.

We have new mailboxes in the work room. There is a box for CWF, WOW, each Board member, Property Chair, and Christian Ed.

Please check your mailboxes as often as

possible. Who knows, you might find a little surprise!
