October led off with a couple of great races, including the first of our co-hosted fall season (see Richard's report), and the always-fun annual Caregivers Sailathon charity run, which by now I'm sure you know that PBYC won again. We won literally by a canoe length, thanks to Sharon Elvin and her team, whose Hawaiian canoe provided the margin of victory for us (eight boats, one more than AYC), allowing us to keep the indescribable Ugly Fish trophy for another year. It's a bit odd to describe us as "sweeping the awards" in a noncompetitive charity run, but hey, we did. Pleased to say that the Caregivers event raised its third-highest charity take ever this year -- Maura and I find this race particularly exciting as the only "race" of the season, or indeed, possible within the Laws of Physics, that allows our cabin cruiser to compete, and even place in the winners circle, with Bill Gibbs. At October's board and membership meetings, we enjoyed Jim and Dorothy Adriansen's impressive German cooking (complete with German beer, German wine and a lead to a local German deli); raffled off a gift certificate to a local butcher; and watched the Blue Ball of Happiness go unclaimed for another month, raising the amount to $125 next month. We also confirmed club dues for next year (same as this year, for full-year payers); noted that Joe Vetrano's budget committee is hard at work, will bring recommendations for next years budget to the November meeting; and opened nominations for the 2015 Bridge and Board, your leadership for next year. You will have nominations committee recommendations by email at the end of October, and any club member is eligible to run. You will elect your new leadership at the November meeting. On social events: October featured another great Bill Gibbs Wine Sunday -- a race in its own way, to find the bottom of a few dozen bottles of excellent vintages. Our Halloween party on October 31st is

in the future by a few days as I write this, but expected to be big fun. Coming up in November: the last fall series race, and our last monthly members meeting for 2014 on November 22nd. We also have a planned night out at Oxnard College's culinary event on Tuesday, November 11 (see Lisa Hopper for more) and an electric boat harbor cruise that next weekend on the 15th–16th (see Maura O'Connor). Watch for notices out to you by email on the details of those two events.

See you on the water - or on the club deck with a drink in your hand. Possibly both. Cordially, Jamie

Thanksgiving dinner and college football are my favorites. Before launching into this months activity, I wanted to reflect on October for just a moment.

It was a busy month here at PBYC - Wine Sunday, Fall Series racing, Sailathon, monthly membership meeting, and Halloween Party! Hopefully, you were able to take in one or more of these events! Dorothy and I hosted the dinner at the membership meeting. Apropos for October we prepared an Oktoberfeast of sauerbraten, potato dumplings, red cabbage and German sweet chocolate cake. We have had a bit of a beef throw down in recent months at the membership meetings. Commodore Jamie Clark and wife Maura started things off in August with an excellent Carbonnnade à la Flamande followed by Rob Skaar's tri-tip in September and our sauerbraten. All meals have had excellent reviews! At the October meeting, staff commodore Joe Vetrano won a $25 gift certificate to Main Street Meats in honor of all the beef we've been cooking! Hat tip to Sharon Palmer at MSM for providing the cert!

Bill Gibbs hosted a great lineup of wines October 5th. A small group of oenophiles tasted stellar selections from Carlisle, Linne Calodo, Dusted Valley and Thatcher, among others. The group usually pares food from John Dodson and Debra who provide hors d' oeuvres. They weren't available in October, so Bill brought pizza from D'Amores in Camarillo. Now, that is what I consider my kryptonite – a glass of red wine and pizza. Yum!

Staff Commodore Su Countess can give a better overview of last month's Caregivers Sailathon than I can. What is important is the charity raised over $15,000 (!) and PBYC retained the Ugly Fish Trophy edging out AnYC by the slimmest of margins! Woohoo! We couldn't have done it without the entry from the Ventura Outrigger Canoe Club who put us over the top! Hard paddling member Sharon Elvin was aboard the Hawaiian style canoe, which

won an award for human powered laps around the course! Commodore Jamie Clark and Maura won the powerboat award for laps! Congrats! Other entries included Jeff Olmstead, Staff Commodores Alan Annis, R/S Countess, and Joe Vetrano; Rob Skaar and last but certainly not least, Bill Gibbs. Dorothy and I were fortunate to sail aboard Popcorn with Rob, Maddie and Savannah. It was a fun day, which ended with dinner and a charity auction at AnYC.

Two races in the Fall Series hosted by PBYC and AnYC are now complete. I took off from sailing the month of October, so I am really looking forward to the third race on November 8th. The race committee can use volunteers; so if you are able to join in the work, please contact Su or Richard. Remember, without volunteers like you, PBYC would be no more.

As I mentioned, November is here and a great time of year. The nights are longer now; there is briskness to the air, and its time to give thanks! Events this month include VIM Thanksgiving potluck, Fall Series #3, the membership meeting, and electric boat outing. If you remember from last year, the women of PBYC got together and rented several electric boats for a social event that was enjoyed by all. The women cruised around the Keys and harbor enjoying snacks, drinks and just socializing. It was perfect for getting to know one another while in the beautiful harbor. I wasn't there but I heard there were many laughs shared and the event was definitely a hit.

Remember to come out for the membership meeting on November 22nd. We elect our new officers and directors this month! Do come out to one of the events this month! We enjoy some of the best weather in the world, right here!

As always, Dorothy and I give you our best and hope that you have fair winds and following seas. Please join us at the club!

With warmest regards,

From theVice Commodore

Friends,Ah, the start of the holiday season. This time of year is always enjoyable for me.

TWO HARBOR FALL SERIESThe first two races of this three-race series co-sponsored by PBYC and AYC were held on

th thOctober 11 and October 25 . There was a much smaller turn out this year compared to 2013 but on the plus side Afterburner was back out there again setting new course records. I want to thank Judy Nolde, Jim Adrianson and Joe Vetrano for assisting Susan and me on the race committee boat, our J-32 Symphony, as well as Rob Skaar, Rick Lundsford, Jamie Clark, and Jeff Olmsted for serving on the finish line, and Dorothy Adrianson for preparing the delicious chicken noodle soup for the post-race festivities for race #1. Rival, racing in Spinnaker A, will be hard to beat for the series having finished first in races #1 and #2. The series winner in the Spinnaker B class will be a toss-up with Verne Haller's R'Escape taking a first in race #1 and a second in race #2, and Superstition taking a second in race #1 and a first in race #2. It should be pointed out that this was the first time that

Verne raced R'Escape in a spinnaker fleet. The series winner in the non-spinnaker class will also be a toss-up with Velero having a first and a second and Wild Flyer having a first and a third. Bill Gibbs' Afterburner is assured of a first place for the series with two first place finishes. [It kinda helps that no other multihulls came out to play, ed] As a matter of interest, it turns out that Afterburner's would have beaten all the PHRF Spinnaker A boats in races #1 and #2 if we had used her PHRF handicap (Note to editor: Are all boats considered female?). Daily trophies for individual races consist of embroidered caps for first place and bottles of wine for second place. Series trophies will be awarded at PBYC after

thrace #3 on November 8 . The full race results are posted on PBYC's web site. Susan and I will be using our sailboat, SYMPHONY, as the race committee boat for the final race of this series on

thNovember 8 and we are looking for volunteers to help us on the water as well as on the finish line.

Su’s TidbitsAs V/C Jim mentioned, PBYC put 8 boats on the water for the 13th annual Caregivers Sailathon. That was enough to retain the Ugly Fish trophy and raise a lot of money for Caregivers. What Jim failed to mention is that AFTERBURNER won the award for most laps by a multihull. It was a great day on the water, even though SYMPHONY ran into one of the zillions of lobster pots just outside the harbor entrance. Luckily we did not snag its anchor line. Big thanks to our winning team: CAROLINE (Joe Vetrano), HEART OF GOLD (Jamie and Maura), POWDERMILK (Jeff Olmstead), SYMPHONY (guess who), SOLITUDE (Alan Annis), POPCORN (Rob Skaar), AFTERBURNER, and the canoe. AFTERBURNER crew, Mark McNulty, stole the show at the afternoon raffles. He pulled tickets and had some choice comments on most items. Hey, Bill, did you know Mark was such a ham? Judy Nolde literally cleaned up by winning at least one of every boat cleaning product offered on raffle. Dave Chase from VYC won the most money raised award. He has won this category numerous times.

The good news is that the Board voted NOT to raise the dues for 2015. You will be getting an invoice from me the final week in October. This does not mean that PBYC is rolling in dough. The Board's opinion is that we can trim expenses, raise income by having lots of events, and deputize all of you to help increase membership.

Joe Vetrano and his nominating committee of Judy Nolde and Alan Annis have selected a slate of Officers and Directors for 2015. They are: Jim Adriansen for Commodore, Lisa Hopper for Vice Commodore, Karen Stager for Rear Commodore, and Dale Pelka, Jeff Olmstead, Jeff Heath, and Sheryl Lunsford for Directors. Nominations can be made from the floor on the night of the election, November 22nd. Mark your calendars. Come and vote. I predict a year of fabulous food with Dorothy, Lisa, and Karen leading the way.

Congratulations to Cindi and Le on their new 26-foot sailboat to be christened CYNTHIA I!

Martson NewsSometimes I feel bad about not being able to contribute more to PBYC. Lately, not even by buying a beer or drinking Bill's free wine. But I try not to feel bad about things I can't do anything about.

As you may know I am involved with multihulls in San Francisco and Mexico as well as Ventura. In Mexico, we manage charters on Gary's Corsair 31 Drei. Well, Drei was spanked by hurricane Odile and we are hoping to have repairs done in time for end-of-October guests from Montana.

My biggest San Francisco multihull commit for the last couple of years has been on the Corsair 37 Transit of Venus. Owner Rick Waltonsmith bought the boat to race to Hawaii in the Pacific Cup. In a practice race around the Farallon's we lost the mast. It subsequently came down again a year later. Nonetheless, in July this year we became the first multihull to ever sail across the finish line of this race. The race was not without drama, but the mission was accomplished!

Unfortunately, the boat still had some demons. My business partner, Capt Jared Brockway was in charge of the delivery home when they suffered catastrophic steerage failure about 200 miles out of Oahu. They turned around and made Honolulu safely, only to be pinned in by the two nearby hurricanes.

Owner Rick later hired another skipper and SF crew to bring Transit home. They made it 2/3rds the way and hit something big in the night. The boat - while unsinkable - was also unsailable. So they were pulled off by a Japanese freighter with Phillipino crew headed to Panama. They arrived there yesterday [Oct 9, ed]. Transit of Venus is now a ghost tri. Maybe the story hasn't completely ended?

I am looking for used sails; mains, jibs & spinnakers for an Eco-Friendly project. Their condition is not important.

I suspect many have been stored in your garage that you would like to get rid of.

I will pick-up all you have.

Please call your weekend's O.D. or e-mail the club list if you are going to trade shift duties with another member. We can usually find a swap, given advance notice.

When you're Club Host duty, your responsibilities are to unlock the door, turn on the lights and be a friendly face for anyone who stops by. Oh, and please be very sure to RE-lock all the doors. If you need cash box or bar tab instructions, call any Board or Bridge member (phone numbers are on page 2). You may choose to actually tend bar, or just let it be self serve. Yes, you can invite your friends up as guests that night.

The stereo/radio/iPod sound system works, so bring tunes, if you like. Looking for a new bad-music joke to replace the Buffett jokes in this space,

Cheers,

Notes from the Editor

No progress on selling my excess boats yet. Though I am getting some entertaining inquires. My first inquiry on Afterburner insisted on paying me more than my asking price, he wanted her so bad. “Consider her sold” he said. As soon as I give him all my bank info, he’ll wire the money and have his truck driver pick Afterburner up. Hmmm... Something fishy here. A female inquiry simply wanted to exchange selfies and chat. An entirely different kind of fishy... I have received two non-criminal inquiries, both from crazy people with crazy ideas. But this is more what I should expect I think. How many sane adults want to zoom around the ocean in a big catamaran?

On the new boat front, Wahoo was scheduled to be finished Nov 1. What is it about contractors and schedules? We missed this completion date. No real surprise I guess. It sounds like progress is being made, so I’ll keep hope alive. Maybe Dec 1.

In the mean time we are still out racing. Richard felt bad he only gave us a 3 hour course in Fall Series #1. Fall Series 2 only took us 1 hour. The

wind came up faster and stronger than expected, and the course put the first two legs on a reach. We were hitting low 20’s back to Gina. They had asked us to call in 1 hour from the finish. We’ve joked about calling in from the start line before, but never actually had this situation arise. From Gina to the harbor we had the same track as a big excursion boat, and we passed a bit close to his lee. He was weaving around himself and probably had little understanding of my desire to fall off in puffs. Afterwards the Captain hailed me and expressed his discontent politely. What could I say, he was right. I apologized. Heading back to Ventura, there was too much wind on our beam and we were too lazy to reef, so we eased sails, sailed high of course and putted along about 10 knots, until we could fall off to a broad reach. This quickly accelerated us into the low 20’s again and soon we roared into the harbor, dropped sails and docked. Off to the club for a beer. A fun Saturday with the guys.
