The Beachwood community came out in droves Sept. 27-29, to celebrate the completion of the $35.6 million renovation to Beachwood High School, the largest capital undertaking in Beachwood Schools’ history.

Upgrades to BHS include a new library/media center, new humanities classroom wing, new performing arts addition, new 1,900-square-foot visual arts classroom, and new 21,371-square-foot gymnasium addition; and renovations to the science and math wing, main entry, cafeteria and restaurant. The former north gym was repurposed into new main offices and a community meeting room. A significant portion of this project also addressed the building’s most critical structural, energy, security and technology needs.

Friday’s activities included the annual Homecoming parade. Candy for the parade was provided by the Beachwood Community PTO. The BHS rededication ceremony followed in the courtyard outside the main entrance to BHS. Following the ceremony, the public was invited inside the building for a community thank-you reception.

More than 1,000 attendees also enjoyed the evening’s outdoor events, including a pep rally, DJ, face painting, Northeast Ohio’s most popular food trucks, the band Run Avril Run, bonfire and a light show. Complimentary cider and doughnuts were provided by the Beachwood Federation of Teachers, Beachwood Chamber of Commerce, and Dollar Bank.

On Saturday, hundreds of residents and alumni enjoyed full tours of the school and a pregame tailgate party that included a DJ, children’s tattoo artist, and complimentary lunch sponsored by the Beachwood High School Alumni Association.

Also on Saturday, the Bison defeated Berkshire 57-6 in its homecoming football game. Elementary students who wore Beachwood apparel to the game received a free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream cone from the Beachwood Boosters.

Sunday, public tours of Beachwood High School were once again available, with a light bagel breakfast provided. Thanks to the many staff, community volunteers and school support organizations who made this extravaganza special for the nearly 3,000 students, parents, staff, alumni and community members who attended throughout the weekend.

The Lee Hayden Gallery in Beachwood brought world-famous artist Todd White, creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, to Hilltop Elementary School on Sept. 20, to demonstrate his work and style, speak to students about careers in the field of artistic design, and present Hilltop with a donation of art supplies. Students watched as White created sketches of his famous characters, students and Hilltop staff. The students will use the donated art supplies to create projects inspired by his style in the art room. Pictured below, fourth grader Talia Novikov displays a caricature of herself created by artist Todd White.

Gene Zajac, a former planetarium instructor and teacher at Shaker Heights High School, led an exciting science lesson for fifth graders on Oct. 1. He spoke about planetary evolution and explained and demonstrated how astronauts function in a space suit. Pictured, fifth grader Emily May tries on a real space suit!

School districts across the state of Ohio participate in an effort to identify, locate, and evaluate all children from birth through 21 years of age who may have disabilities. Disability, in this instance, means such conditions as hearing impairments, visual impairments, speech or language impairments, specific learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, cognitive disabilities, multiple disabilities, other health impairments, physical impairments, autism, and traumatic brain injury.

Public schools have responded vigorously to federal and state mandates requiring the provision of a free appropriate public education regardless of a child’s disabilities. But before school districts can serve children, they must identify the children in need of such services. Many disabilities are not obvious because those who exhibit them may not function in the mainstream of the community, such as children who are homeless and children of migrant families. Also, many unidentified children with disabilities are preschoolers.

Parents may not be aware that their child has a disability or that there are programs and services available. School districts are interested in meeting the needs of children with disabilities. For more detailed information about our Search for Children with Disabilities, please visit www.beachwoodschools.org, or if you have or know of a child who may have a disability, call (216) 464-2600, ext. 235 for more information and help.

Senior Brett Dubin is the first golfer in Beachwood’s history to be named MVP of the Chagrin Valley Conference. Dubin had the low match score in 10 matches this season. His nine-hole average (37.3) broke the school record, while his 18-hole average (77) is among the top four in school history. Dubin finished fifth overall at the OHSAA Districts, where his score of 77 was just one stroke from qualifying for the state championships.
