Peacemaking
Peace is not the absence of war.

unshakeable faith. Pope John Paul II

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here we are in a new year and it is already the month of November.
We would like to thank Mr. Cosgrove and his class for putting togeth-
er another issue of P.B.S. Express. Mr. Cosgrove told me that there
are many submissions from our intermediate classes this time. There
have been many exciting things going on in all our classes this fall. A
lot of hard work has gone into this newsletter, and we are sure you
will enjoy it.
You may have noticed that there have been a few changes at Precious
Blood this year. There are now three grade six classes at P.B.S., and
Ms. Ria Sarmiento has joined our Grade 6 team. We have another
new teacher, Ms. Julia Brown, teaching Grade 3 in the afternoon. Mr.
Daniel Murphy will be teaching our Grade 4/5 class until Christmas.
After Christmas, Ms. Raquel Rodrigues will be returning to P.B.S.
from her maternity leave. When Ms. Agata Lopresti-Costantino
leaves to have her baby, Ms. Anna Blalowska will take over as one of
our core French teachers. We are very fortunate to already have her in
the building helping out. On Mondays, Ms. Natalie Collins is at Pre-
cious Blood to teach Health and to work with our grade 8’s. We are
also very pleased to have a new Child and Youth Worker, Ms.
Keleann Samuel who will be working mostly with our Grade 1’s.
Our Parent Council have continued their stellar fundraising efforts this
year. Our Chocolate Drive has just finished, and it has been a great
success again this year. The Parent Council would like to thank all of
the parents and students who worked so hard to support the school.
They would also like to remind you that their next meeting is on
Wednesday, November 9th at 7 p.m., and all parents are encouraged
to attend.
Finally, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have any
concerns. We want you, wherever you spend your day, to feel confi-
dent that your children are safe, happy and getting an excellent educa-
tion at Precious Blood.
May God bless you and your families and keep you safe in the coming
months,
Ms. Kelly Manning Mr. Frank Bergougnou

Virtue of the Month This month we will be focussing on the virtue of PEACE. The
quote for this month is “Peace I leave to you, my peace I give to
you.” John 14:27. Offering each other the sign of peace during
Mass is probably considered to be the “fun” part for some of
our younger students. Yet Catholic social teaching reminds us
that we are one human family whatever our national , racial, eth-
nic, economic and ideological differences. We are our brothers’
and sisters’ keepers wherever they may be. Loving our neigh-
bour has global dimensions in a shrinking world. The Gospel
calls us to be peacemakers. Our love for all our sisters and broth-
ers demands that we promote peace in a world surrounded by
violence and conflict. This month at Precious Blood we will be
peacemakers by recognizing students in our community who
promote peace and harmony.
Ukulele Club By: Artemio C. Fruity Friday! On Friday, October 14th, the Kindergarten classes had
a Thanksgiving Celebration. They enjoyed a fruit sal-
ad made with oranges, grapes, apples and pears. They
also had some carrots and cucumber slices. What a
healthy snack!
The Terry Fox Run!
During the day of the Terry Fox Run the students from P.B.S went outside in front
of the school and sang
“O Canada”. Students from J.K to grade 8 brought a loonie and a toonie for the
Terry Fox Foundation. We ran for one hour, many laps around the block. Grades 5
to 8s ran, including Mr. Murphy’s class. Kindergarten classes walked around the
school yard. Grades 1 to 4 walked around the neighbourhood. Jk’s and Sk’s gave hi
fives to the runners as they ran by the school. We were very supportive and people
were able to walk with their friends. It turned out to be a very sunny day. Alto-
gether we raised $804.00.
Our mascot stands forever!

Boys’ Soccer Report:
On September 20, 2011, the boys’ intermediate
soccer team travelled to St Patricks’ High School
for the divisional soccer tournament. Sean, the
team captain and Mr. V the
PBS soccer coach taught us
valuable soccer skills to keep
our team competitive. We
played two games in the round
-robin and depending on goal
differential and winning
streaks, we had the finals in our hands.
In our first game against St Dennis we had a 1-0
lead with Alex’s amazing goal. After the half-
time interval, PBS was down 2-1 and in the final
three minutes, Sean scored the tie-breaker with
his curving free kick. In the second game our
team played St John’s, which was a make or
break game for us because we had to win by two
goals to make it to the finals against St.Brigit’s,
so we won 5-3 with Juan’s winning goal. The fi-
nals against St.Brigit’s, was again a pressure
game for PBS, and if we would win we would go
to the Regionals. By half-time the teams were
tied 1-1 with Yousef’s amazing header. Then we
couldn’t maintain the tie with St. Brigit who
scored and took the lead 2-1. We received a free
kick towards the end of the game but unfortunate-
ly that was a missed opportunity and we were
declared the runners-up in the Divisional compe-
tition. The members of the team are very appre-
ciative of the support and coaching by Mr.
Vigliatore.

We Day On Tuesday, September
27th, 2011, a group of
intermediate students
attended the We Day
which was held at the Air
Canada Centre. There
were several great perfor-
mances by guests artists
such as Shawn Desman, Nikki Yanofsky, Down
with Webster, City and Colour, the Kenyan Boys’
Choir and Nelly Furtado. As well, there were inspi-
rational speakers such as Dr Hunter Doherty “Patch
Adams”, Marry Robinson, Liz Murray, Rick Han-
sen, Danny Glover and Spencer West.
The most significant aspect of the gathering was the
announcement that Nelly Furtado was donating
$1000000 to Free the Children. One other event
discussed was the upcoming “Vow of Silence”,
which has been planned for November 30th. This
occasion is for children who live in other countries
that don’t have the right to speak.
By the end of the day, everyone had learned some-
thing new and was inspired by each and every
speaker. It certainly was a very heart-warming ex-
perience that left a lasting impression upon the in-
termediate students who attended the We Day gath-
ering.

Girls’ Soccer Tournament
On Wednesday, September 21, The Intermediate Girls’ Soccer Team attended a tournament at Riverdale. We used public transit and ended up at the wrong field, so our coaches, Ms. D’Agostini and Mrs. Tam-burro, directed us to the right field.
We stared at the field in awe, as we watched teams score goals and run up and down the field. We got ready to play, and the first team we faced was St. Luke’s. We lost 3 to 4, but we did our best. Our second game was against St. Dunstan, and we tied 1 to 1. With some trepidation, it was down to our last game against Our Lady of Per-petual Help and we won 3 to 1! We were excited.
Over all we came in second place,
with a special thanks to our two coaches,
Ms. D’Agostini and Mrs. Tamburro, our par-
ent volunteers, Mr. and Mrs. El-Rassi, and
as well our Co-Captains, Reanna and Cett.
Also, we wish a special mention to the team
that made victory possible: Reanna, Cett,
Karissa, Shormeh, Megan, Daniella, Stella,
Jaden, Emily, Mirna, Kianna, Jessica, Ni-
cole and Amanda.

Markham Fair
The grade 3's had a wonderful time at Markham Fair. We visited the General Exhibits Building and Old McDonald’s Barn and the Special Events Tent. The children saw many farm animals and a display of harvest produce. It was a great day and lots of fun!!
Pop Tabs Ms. Bucci's Grade 3 class is collecting pop tabs for Varie-
ty Village. Please save them at home and bring them to
her at school. This is a worthwhile project because they
will be able to get a wheelchair for a needy child.
