Probably a lot of our readers from the north had trouble getting into the ‘holiday spirit’ what with balmy

breezes, swaying palm trees and for those who ventured to the beach… the sun-kissed shores of the Atlantic Ocean where people were swimming and frolicking… Ok, well… maybe not frolicking, but it was definitely the cold weather and snow that usually signaled the approaching Christmas and Chanukah Holidays. Actually, it’s probably still pretty difficult to get into the holiday mood in South Florida… So here’s some GREAT NEWS! Christmas On Las Olas is our ‘home town’ kick off to the holiday season… and since it takes place on Las Olas Boulevard… the holiday SHOPPING season! Already, stores are decorating their windows with lavish displays… thousands of tiny, energy-efficient LED lights have been installed… around the stately Royal Palm Trees that line the Boulevard and in the lush, leafy Black Olive Trees in the medians… Soon the static and kinetic lighting displays will be installed… On Tuesday, November 29th, the Boulevard really comes to life in all its festive glory as the 49th Annual Christmas On Las Olas welcomes upwards of 40,000 people. This cherished family friendly, holiday tradition has so much going on between 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., you’d have to be Ebenezer Scrooge personified if you didn’t get that down-right warm and fuzzy feeling that brings back the child in you. And speaking of children… it’s the perfect place to take the kids and grandkids. If you’ve attended this event in the past, look for some of the popular attractions to return… Mango’s 2-story movie screen with holiday classics, Snow Mountain – presented this year by Anidjar &

FOR NEARLY A CENTURY, CITY OF HOPE’S PIONEERING RESEARCH has brought the world closer to cures for cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other devastating diseases. One of only 40 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Can-cer Centers and a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, City of Hope’s re-search and treatment protocols advance care through-out the nation.

“Cancer has touched our family, so the fight against that disease is important to us. That’s why we’ve been supporting City of Hope for more than 20 years,” said Highland Beach residents Selma and Richard Ehrlich.

Richard, who serves on the institution’s Na-tional Ambassador Leadership Council and chairs the Florida Leadership Committee, described City of Hope’s ability to speed innovations of new and better ways to diagnose, treat and prevent life-threaten-ing disease. “City of Hope is a place where scientists and physicians closely collaborate in teams to turn ideas into discoveries as quickly as possible to im-prove the lives of patients while saving the lives of men, women and children around the world,” he said.

Richard and Selma established a Charitable Gift Annuity with City of Hope because they wanted to do something special, above and beyond their previous con-tributions. With a City of Hope Charitable Gift An-nuity, you earn guaranteed income for life, an imme-diate tax deduction and a higher-than-market rate of return.

If you’d like to get off the roller coaster ride that is today’s stock market, consider this investment. It’s a great way to keep your retirement income steady while helping City of Hope continue its groundbreaking re-search.

In previous articles I have discussed why the most important car insurance you can have is uninsured motorist coverage. I have strongly encouraged you to have the maximum amount that you can afford for U.M. coverage. I have also written an article entitled: “Are You Spending Your Money Wisely On Car Insurance?” That article discussed higher deductibles for collision coverage or eliminating collision completely for older cars. In this article, I will be discussing the optional coverage known as “Medical Payments”, sometimes ab-breviated “Med. Pay.” Medical Payments is a coverage that supplements your P.I.P. coverage. While P.I.P. is re-quired in Florida, Med. Pay is not. P.I.P. pays for 80% of your medical bills from injuries from a car accident. The payment to the doctors is based on 80% of 200% of the Medicare allowance for the medical services. If you elect Medical Payments coverage, then the 20% balance is paid by your car insurance. For example, if the Medi-care allowance for services totals $5,000.00, your P.I.P. will pay 80% or $4,000.00 and your Med. Pay will pay the other $1,000.00. The Medical Payments coverage is relatively in-expensive in relation to your total premium; however, I strongly advise against electing this optional coverage. Medical Payments coverage is like having a supplemental health insurance policy on your car in-surance. The problem with it occurs if we obtain a set-tlement for you for your injuries due to someone else’s negligence. Your own insurance company will demand to be paid back from your portion of that settlement. This is known as a subrogation lien, which is common with Medicare and private health insurance policies. However, until recently, it was not necessary to take into account your Medical Payments coverage as a subroga-tion lien on a settlement with another company. Lately, however, many of the largest insurance companies, in-cluding State Farm and Allstate, have been enforcing their legal right to claim a subrogation lien for Medical Payments coverage.

In a typical example, if you hired an attorney for a personal injury claim and you got a settlement of $15,000.00, the attorney’s fee would be 33¨1/3% or $5,000.00. After deducting costs of perhaps, $200.00, you would be left with $9,800.00, less any doctor’s bills that were not paid by your P.I.P. Usually, your attor-ney can negotiate with your treating doctors to waive the balances, since they were paid 80% already by P.I.P. However, if you had Medical Payments coverage, and your insurance paid the treating doctors that 20% bal-ance, then you will have to pay back your insurance company out of your portion of the settlement. So, to continue with the previous example, if your Medical Payments coverage paid the treating doctors $2,000.00, you are going to have to pay some or all of that $2,000.00 back to your own company from your settlement. If you did not have Medical Payments coverage, your at-torney would be able to request that the doctors waive or significantly reduce that 20% balance. Therefore, whenever there is a personal injury settlement, having Medical Payments coverage actually works against you. If you have Medicare or other health insurance, and your P.I.P. benefits are exhausted, you can always elect to ask your health insurance company to pay the balances of the doctors’ bills. However, in most in-stances, it is better to allow your attorney to negotiate with the doctors rather than having Medicare involved, which will then require a Medicare subrogation lien. For more information regarding car insurance and how to get the most for your dollar, please feel free to contact me. I provide a free personal or phone consultation regarding any issue pertaining to person-al injury claims and car insurance coverage. We also provide free consultations regarding Wills, Trusts and Estates. Call me at 954-569-4878. My address is 3275 W. Hillsboro Blvd., Suite 204, Deerfield Beach, Florida 33442. Palm-Aire Friends of the Arts got the season of to a very busy start at the October 10th Board Meeting at the Skolonick Center.

Susan Bloom, one of PAFA’s Past Presidents, presented a check for $1000 to Sheri Garlock, President of the Broward County Music Teachers’ Association to fund a new project. This program provides a keyboard to a local convalescent home where music students visit the residents and entertain them, making it a “win-win” situation for all. Nice work Broward County Music Teachers Association, and Thank you Susan. After a brief business meeting, Palm-Aire Friends of the Arts members honored Frances Czarnecki with a Birthday celebration. Frances is 99 years young and was very happy to blow out the candles and enjoy the cake. No diets for her! Not a member yet? Check out the following event calendar for the

Recently, I had a vivid dream of a car accident. In the dream, it was just after dark and raining

lightly. I was waiting at an intersection. When the light turned green I went forward and struck another car turning in front of me. My car was disabled and the turning car left the scene. I was able to get a partial license number and a description of the car before calling the police. Shortly after the call, a tow truck showed up to clear the intersection. This brought up the question as to where the car will be towed. After an accident, you have a choice as to where the car is taken. It is a good idea to know a preferred place to get your car repaired that offers after-hours service. Towing companies will tow you to an impound yard or to one of their vendors, if you do not know where you want the car to be taken. These companies may not be your best choice with regard to making the repairs on your vehicles, depending on their certifications. Many dealerships have body shops, but more and more they are subletting their work to creditable authorized repair shops. It should only take a little time to find a good repair company to use in the event you have an emergency. While researching this I asked a friend about his practices and he has a sticker he places inside the door frame in case of an emergency. There are many scenarios that could happen that we do not plan for and it would be impossible to plan for them all. With a little thought though, we can plan for the higher percentage possibilities. The owner of the house we recently repaired from a kitchen fire was happy that his alarm company called the fire department as quickly as they did. All of his pictures and personal documents would have been destroyed had the fire department gotten there a few minutes later. I am sure that he did not plan for a fire, but his damage was minimized due to his alarm system. It may be a good plan to make copies of your important documents and keep them in a safe location away from the original documents. Also,

you should have a list of companies and service providers that you know and trust for advice in the event of an unexpected emergency. There are some unscrupulous companies out there that prey on victims of emergency events. After something totally unexpected presents itself, your reactions may be clouded by the event. In those cases, it is best to depend on someone you can trust. You need to be careful not to sign any contracts before your head is clear and remember you have time to make a good decision that will work in your best interests.

“Actually, you’ve got a stalker and a hit man. There’s a difference.” “They’re both trying to kill me.” Is this a distinction without a difference? You’ll find out in Julie Garwood’s latest, The Ideal Man. Julie Garwood is a proven actor. The Ideal Man is her 27th masterpiece. The protagonist, Dr. Ellie Sullivan, is presented in the novel’s opening words, and the pace of The Ideal Man is swift. The crackling, effective dialogue and the more than occasional short chapter move the storyline quickly. At a trial, Dr. Sullivan makes flippant responses to a cross-examining attorney’s questions. While here remarks are highly unrealistic, that’s literary license (and show-biz) for you. Now that I’m happily through with The Ideal Man, I’ll have to traipse down to my friendly public li-brary to sample some of Ms. Garwood’s earlier treasures. Julie Garwood, I’m so glad to have made your literary acquaintance! May you continue to produce more fine novels so that my job as a book critic is that much more fun and easier.

Taking Precautions

While it may seem that the incidence of childhood melanoma is on the rise, it is not definitive whether it actually is occurring more often or if it is sim-ply being reported more frequently. One physi-cian noted in a recent article that he has seen more pediatric melanomas in the last 8 years in practice than in the previous 22 years of his Dermatology practice. Unfortunately, the data from 20-30 years ago is not good regarding melanoma occurrence in patients less than 18 years of age. The good news is that in recent years, data is now being collected to look specifically at the rate of melanoma in the pediatric population.

Pediatric melanomas are uncommon; however it is important to be vigilant for them in children, espe-cially with living in Florida. Because melanoma is not as easily diagnosed in children as in adults, it is important to perform biopsies for pediatric patients just as one would for adults. Therefore, suspected pediatric melanomas should be biopsied as they would be in adults.

Unique Presentation

Pediatric melanoma presents very differently than melanomas seen in adults because in adults the ma-jority are sun-induced. Adult melanomas start as superficial spreading melanomas which really are not common in children until they pass the age of 15 years old. Superficial spreading melanomas are more broad than deep. Melanomas in children tend to be nodular melanomas that grow thicker rather than broader and this type represents nearly half of all pediatric melanomas. Nodular melanomas can be rapidly growing red, brown or black lumps and it is often not until they are broken, bleeding or ulcerated that they are first diagnosed. Unfortu-

nately, that can be late in the disease process whereby the melanoma has spread and may even be fatal.

The second most common form of melanoma in children occurs in congenital nevi (or moles that have been present since early childhood). This is why it is very important to have annual mole checks, even in children, by a Derma-tologist. A Dermatologist is specially trained to examine moles and look for atypical features that the less trained may not find on a cursory examination.

The only treatment for childhood melanoma is early di-agnosis and removal therefore it is recommended that if your child does have numerous moles that they have a to-tal body skin examination by a Dermatologist.

For more information about pediatric melanoma, please contact us at Hecker Dermatology Group, P.A. Most in-surances accepted and new patients are welcome. Call for an appointment at: 954-783-2323 or visit us on-line: www.heckerderm.com.
