HHHH omecoming is an exciting time of year for students and alumni! While on campus during Spirit Week, I could
feel the energy and excitement of the students! The
Spirit Groups and Student Council work hard to make this
annual event special. I hope you were able to enjoy the
pep rally and football game with your children. Family
involvement is an element of what makes the Lab School so special.
IIII t was my pleasure to attend the Fall Fiesta and the choirs performance of Seussical the Musical last month. It was WONDERFUL! I could hardly believe I was watching
middle and high school students. There is great talent at the Lab School and we are
privileged to be a part of it. Congratulations for a job well-done Ms. Lauve, Ms. Clough,
cast and crew.
TTTT he class participation numbers are in and those achieving 100% Cub Club membership are Ms. Crutti, Ms. Deviller, Ms. Fos, and Ms. Rosenfeld. Red Zeppelin
pizza is on the way! Our membership enrollment is at an all time high with 671
members! This is a new record and we thank you for your support!
We now have pocket-sized directories selling for $5. These are great for your purse or
car. You can send your check to the Main Office or email [email protected] to
get yours.
TTTT he sipping and clipping you are doing for Community Coffee labels, Box Tops and Campbells UPCs is paying. We will soon receive a check for $1,000.00 from Box Tops.
This money goes to the Cub Clubs Special Projects fund. The Cub Club will donate
something special to the new green space currently under development. Stay tuned
for more information in the spring.
Kindly,

Many thanks to our parents who have volunteered to serve as teacher helpers this
semester at Polk Elementary. We have placed Beverly Thomas, Tarilyn McBride,
Angelique Barrow and her sister, Hannah Leger in various classrooms. We are in
the process of placing Celeste Dolan with a reading partner. Other teachers are
seeing the benefits from having a committed volunteer in the classroom and have
asked for help. If you have a few hours or more to give a week, please let me
know.
The Book Fair last week was a tremendous success! For the first time, every
student was able to purchase a book because of a grant. I wish you could have
seen their faces when after picking out their special book, they also received a
new pencil and bookmark! Hats off to Clear Channel for giving each student a
$5.00 Book Fair certificate. Many thanks to Hayley Brown and her two sons,
Christian and Clayton (both 4th graders at our school), Lucy Davenport, Beverly
Thomas and Elizabeth Johnson for volunteering to help. I received a glowing
report from Mrs. Scott, the Librarian, about how helpful our volunteers were,
especially Christian and Clayton Brown in suggesting books to the students!
We are in the process of setting up a new project where one of our elementary
teachers will be linked to a teacher at Polk for friendship and support. We hope
that each week an email will be sent to the assigned teacher and monthly a
surprise will be left in their mail boxes at school. If you have any ideas for
"surprises", please let me know. We need approximately 35 items (pens, pencils,
candles, promotional items from a business, candy bars, mints, etc.). Lucy
Davenport is coordinating this with teacher Deborah Dornier, one of our 4th
grade teachers.
For suggestions or comments, please contact Ann Storey at [email protected] or
924-0723.

For the month of October, the elementary school community service focus was on the
Lions Clubs International Recycle for Sight Program. Candy Ryals ([email protected])
is a member of this organization and our fourth grade classrooms sponsored this drive.
The drive itself involved asking students to donate used eyeglasses, sunglasses, and
readers. These used eyeglasses will help someone living in a developing county see
better. Last year the fourth grade collected 71 pairs of eyeglasses. This year they
collected almost 50 pairs of eyeglasses. A collection box will remain in the main office
if you have more glasses to donate. Thank you to all who participated in the drive! The
drive ended on Friday, October 29th so our students LOOKED spooktacular as they filled the donation box!

Fall Break Initiates New Travel Time to New York City
Thirty-nine 8th/9
th grade students, parents, teachers and alumni spent their Fall Break in New
York City. Arriving on Thursday afternoon, the group checked into the Hotel Pennsylvania
and got dressed to go out on the town. The group dined at Ellens Stardust Caf before
taking in the production of Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre. Sarah Karam and Taryn Welch
thought that Wicked was the best part of the trip. It was entertaining, and I enjoyed the
music and dancing, Sarah said. Taryn said It was totally awesome, and I want to go see it
again.
After the play, members of the cast and production crew met with our students for a Talk
Back. The students were given an opportunity to ask members of the cast about how they
got their roles on Broadway and their educational backgrounds and training. Anabelle
Montgomery said, It was a great learning experience for anyone who wants to have a future
in theatre. I also learned that just because you are an actor on Broadway you are not
necessarily rich and famous.

Friday morning, with subway passes in hand; the group boarded the E train to Time Square.
They went to the Discovery Time Square exposition to see the Treasures of King Tut. For the
first time in 30 years, the exhibit, The Golden Age of the Pharaohs, was in the United States.
The exhibit was held in 10 galleries with over 130 original artifacts including King Tuts
coffinette and his crown. Margaret Ortego enjoyed the 4-D movie on Egyptian mummies.
She thought it was interesting how they mummified the kings and queens and put their
organs into different containers and that their tombs had so much gold in and on them.

The group moved next to the United Nations for a tour and then off to Time Square to visit
Pop Tart World. The manager of Pop Tart World gave a bag of treats to each student. In the
bag was an assortment of Pop tarts, a t-shirt from Pop Tart World and some extra treats.
Still hungry, headed for dinner at Hard Rock Caf.
From there the group split for more theatre (The Lion King) or a trip to Madame Tussauds.
Reul Walker went to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum and thought that the Wax Museum
was the best part of the trip for him. He said It was fun to see how life-like and how much the
wax figures resembled the people. My favorite figure was Babe Ruth.

As no visit would be complete without seeing the Statue of Liberty, Saturday morning the
group went to Battery Park to catch a ferry to Liberty Island for a visit to The Lady and Ellis
Island. The 350 pieces of the statue were shipped in 214 crates to the United States in
1885. Hank Kleinpeter was amazed at how they could ship all of the pieces from France and
put it together. He said, The climb to the Crown was not tiring but at times the steps were
steep. The view was spectacular when we got to the top. It was worth the 354 step (22
stories) hike to the top. Blake Fussell said that she was shocked at how tall the statue was
and said, That was a lot of stairs!

As some members of the group are diehard LSU football fans, they did not want to miss the
ballgame Saturday afternoon. They joined LSU Alumni in NYC at Legends to watch the
LSU-Auburn game. While there they met a group of former U-High students and were in the
company of many LSU alumni.
Others had shopping on their minds and had to visit China Town and Little Italy - so many
stores and so little time.

After the game and shopping, the group went to Rockefeller Center for ice skating. With a
few falls but no broken bones the group then walked to Time Square for a late dinner. After
dinner, now midnight, it was officially Lindsay Florys birthday. Her friends sang Happy
Birthday to her in the middle of Time Square! It was a late night and time to head back to the
hotel. Sydney Saia enjoyed the subway system. For her, one of the highlights of the trip was
the late night singing in the subway stations while waiting for the trains.
Lindsay Flory, Sophie Guirard and Manon Bart Kacey Moore, Torri Lee, and Alumni Miracle Johnson

The whirlwind trip ended with a morning in Central Park, a visit to FAO Schwarz and a stroll
down 5th Avenue for additional shopping.
.
As always, the students were gracious and friendly to the people they met along the way and
were complimented by many strangers. They were excellent ambassadors for the LSU
Laboratory School.

Leaders and chaperones agree that this was one of the
best groups ever. We were very impressed with our
students. Frank Rusciano, trip leader and organizer said,
Our students were polite to the people on the street.
They were generous to many homeless people. Their
parents should be proud. They were a great group!

October was an active month for Key Club. On Saturday, October 9, members participated in the Baton Rouge Bar Associations Food Drive for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank held at the Wal-Mart on Highland Road. About 20 members participated and many food items were donated by Wal-Mart customers as well as monetary donations. Anna Leinweber was the Key Club officer who chaired this event. A special thanks to Mr. Babcock who donated one of each item in the list of canned foods.
October 23, U-High Key Club members helped out at the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast held on the LSU campus. Members helped cook pancakes, serve food, clean tables and manage the trash cans. This event was chaired by Paul Gravois, President.
The Key Club Reverse Trick-or-Treat was held at St. James Retirement Center on Monday, October 25. Approximately 20 members attended the successful event. Members had made Halloween cards for the St. James community and brought bags and bags of Halloween treats. The Key Club members thoroughly enjoyed passing out the cards to the elderly and visiting with them in their rooms.
Camille Beste, Co-Secretary, chaired the Reverse Trick-or-Treat. Camille brought Halloween Bingo cards and Halloween prizes for the Bingo winners. The St. James community enjoyed playing Bingo and socializing with the students.
