I want to convey to you that we will continue to make improvements across a broad front as we move through FY10. We have many new Chi ld Development Centers on the con-struction list. These new CDCs bring additional spaces to those parents wanting the best docu-mented care for their children. We will all watch with excitement as Chili’s Bar and Grill becomes a reality in this fiscal year offering another eating choice for all of us at the Great Place. We have some great events scheduled for you. Thanksgiving will be a part of our lives and how we celebrate this day depends on our Family traditions. I have learned not to overdo it on eating turkey so I can stay awake for all of the foot-ball games. May you enjoy a p e a c e f u l a n d e n j o y a b l e Thanksgiving. Please keep in your thoughts and prayers those who are in harm’s way , and their loved ones who keep the light on for their safe return.

Dear Reader: It’s time for the holidays again. Time for Fami-lies and friends to gather for friendship, food and fun. Share a short story about what your favorite part of Thanksgiving is.

What I like the most about Thanksgiving is be-ing with Family. Normally, on Thanksgiving my husband’s whole Family and my mother and fa-ther-in-law all get together with us. We take turns on who hosts but I love doing it. I love to cook homemade food all the way down to the cranber-ry sauce. This year will be the first year that I will be doing Thanksgiving with my friends and kids. My husband’s gone and well, no Family this time so it’s time to make new memories. Family and friends will be the new best part as this Military life blossoms. Our Thanksgiving will be different. Instead of blood relatives it will be our military Families from all over the world that will contin-ue to make Thanksgiving special. It will be a time where we can all be thankful for what our Soldiers do for our country. It’ll be a time we can be thank-ful for the ones that are with their spouses, chil-dren and friends. It’ll be a time we can be thankful for the ones that aren’t home and pray for their safe returns and enjoy what really matters the most. It’s not the food, although it’s great. It’s really just about being together and enjoying the most important things in life.

Lisa Harrell

My favorite part of Thanksgiving has always been the whole Family bringing different things to dinner. This year will be our first Thanksgiving away from our Families. A new tradition begins.

ne of my favorite aspects of the holidays is dec-orating the house for the season. As a child, I

looked forward to making holiday crafts, and now as an adult I love displaying the adorable crafts the little ones in my life have made for me. Apache Arts and Crafts is your one stop craft shop on post. This state-of-the-art facility has something for all your artistic ambitions- from basic crafts to woodwork-ing to ceramics and more. Here’s a craft for your Family to try! Turkey note holder- This is a great craft for children as it is quick, easy and inexpensive. Your result will be a cute Thanksgiving turkey with a clothespin to attach a special note. An ad-ditional idea is to attach a magnet to the back and use it on the refrigerator to hang your holiday grocery list, coupons or photos. Or, your child could attach a special handwrit-ten letter to their deployed parent to send a piece of home overseas. Make your holiday season a little extra special with handmade decor, and purchase all the supplies for your project at the full service store inside Apache. For more information, stop by Apache Arts and Crafts on 761st Tank Battalion and 62nd Street, Bldg 2337, or call 254-287-0343. s

It is a place for Soldiers and Families to relax, reconnect and rejuvenate in order to better cope with the stressful effects of Army life. The Resiliency Campus is located on 31st Street and Battalion Avenue, and consists of the Wellness Center and the Spiritual Fitness Center. or All Your Life” is not just a slogan we put on our posters, it is our mis-sion. Fort Hood Family and Morale,

Welfare and Recreation is truly here to serve the Soldiers and Families of the “Great Place.” November is dedicated to “Honoring the Warrior; Ap-preciating the Family.” For Fort Hood FMWR, the steadfast support of mil-itary and their Families is a continuing source of inspi-ration. Soldiers and Families face special challenges of deployments, Family separations and frequent reloca-tions with great courage and resolve. Our facilities are constantly evolving to bring you and your Family the best possible programs and opportunities. In order to reduce stress and renew energy, Fort Hood’s nine physical fitness facilities offer state-of-the-art workout equipment, swimming pools, courts, fit-ness classes and more. All physical fitness facilities are free to use for Soldiers and their Families. The Wellness Center on the Resiliency Campus is the newest physi-cal fitness facility, offering popularly requested features including CrossFit, Yoga and a Wii Fit Room. Child, Youth & School Services provides child care, classes, activities and more for children six weeks to 18 years old. CYS Services is tailored to fit the de-manding schedule that military life brings; offering extended hours and special care options for deploy-ments, R&R, periods of time when the Soldier is work-ing in the field or other unexpected situations that are all too familiar with military life. Fantastic new programs are being added constantly. It is currently free to register with CYS Services. To register your child, call the Central Enrollment Registration Office at 254-287-8029. Facilities such as The Equipment Check-Out Center, Phantom Warrior Lanes, Belton Lake Outdoor Recre-

ational Area, The Sportsmen’s Center and The Courses of Clear Creek offer a place for Soldiers and Families to take a load off and simply have fun. Often times, with the constant moving that the military life re-quires, it is difficult for Families to acquire such things as recreational equipment and move them across the country. All of these facilities have equipment avail-able for check-out so there is no need to have your own to join the fun! Single Soldiers are not forgotten, thanks to the Fort Hood Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers pro-gram. This dynamic program is free to join and offers Thursday Getaways, socials and exciting trips. Most recently, the BOSS program ventured to Jamaica for four days of fun in the sun. For more information on Fort Hood FMWR facili-ties and programs, including locations and hours of operation, see www.hoodmwr.com. Also to symbolize appreciation of our Soldiers and Families, Fort Hood FMWR provides free and reduced programs and services to make life at the “Great Place” a little more enjoyable. For more informa-tion on these opportunities, see “G.O.O.F. Off On Us!” on page 18. s

ight now, in most of Central Texas, we are getting used to not broiling with 100 degree plus heat. Vacations away from the

heat seem to be a distant dream for some of us, who are locked into “staycation” mode because of bad economic cir-

cumstances. However, there are always a few simple pleasures in our lives which help us to endure, even in tough times. These simple pleasures do not cost a lot of money, but lead to great satisfaction. Three of my simple plea-sures are my gas grill, fresh

vegetables from the local farmer’s market and cool,

aromatic white wines, such as Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. Normally

a red wine drinker, I have lately been gravitating toward white wine. All of these wines go well with lightly grilled fish and chicken. Re-cently, I discov-ered that some of my favorite grocery stores have a turkey version of bacon

wrapped filet mi-gnon, which pairs

well with white wine and tastes wonderful on the grill. Even though many of us are enjoying turkey mignon instead of steak nowadays, we don’t have to give up the wine events that we love. It is a myth that wine events have to be expensive. All of our Wine So-ciety of Central Texas local chapters work hard to put on affordable, yet high quality wine events. For those of you in the “staycation” mode, it is not difficult to locate a Central Texas winery or tasting room near you. A weekend or even a day among the vines or in the atmosphere of a tasting room is one of the great affordable pleasures that any-one can have for a small tasting fee. And don’t forget about Club Hood’s Beef and Burgundy Night, which is open to the public. Each Tuesday, Club Hood, 24th Street and Tank Destroyer Boulevard, pres-ents a wonderful “All-You-Can-Eat” buffet containing steamship round of beef, baked potato, peel-n-eat shrimp, fresh salad and two glasses of your choice of Burgundy, Chablis or Blush wine. ith all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season sometimes it’s great just to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Well there’s no better place in Central Texas to do that than our own Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area. The

Thirteenth Annual Nature in Lights will overwhelm you with warmth and delight. Around every corner of the over five mile journey, there is magic to catch your eye and fill your heart with holiday spirit. Every year an abundance of traditional light displays are combined with some new surprises to set the tone of this memorable celebration. Over one hundred displays adorn the already spectacular lakeside landscape and the winding pathways that make their way across BLORA. Meanwhile this whole experience is made even more enchanting by tuning in to the Holiday music that is choreographed to bring each scene brilliantly to life. Two of the best loved illuminated attractions are the 300-foot long nativity scene and the 500-foot long awe-inspiring drive through the “Tunnel of Lights.”

Local businesses sponsor many of these light displays and they are carefully put together one by one and each bulb is checked and placed to ensure that your time at BLORA is merry and bright. Another nchanting and fun part of Nature in Lights is Santa’s Village. Located along the route at the Live Oak Pavilion, visitors can indulge their sweet tooth with fresh homemade cookies and hot chocolate filled with comfort in every sip on these chilly Texas nights. The night wouldn’t be complete without a stroll through the charming shopping area where you can find holiday craft vendors and other happy holiday makers. Santa Clause himself awaits your arrival for that traditional holiday photo, the perfect keepsake to preserve your memory. Santa’s Village runs Friday through Sunday Nov. 20-22 and Nov. 26 – Dec. 13. Then nightly Dec 17 – 24, Sunday - Saturday and open on Thanksgiving. Nature in Lights is proudly hosted by Fort Hood’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. It is recommended to come and

very year I look forward to the holidays to spend time with Family and eat my mother’s delicious cooking. Since joining the military life, I’ve come to realize that it isn’t always

possible to travel home for the holidays and enjoy these things. Club Hood understands that Soldiers and Families often need a place to enjoy a home-style holiday meal. This holiday season make Club Hood your first choice for fine dining. Club Hood will feature a scrumptious Thanksgiving meal complete with all your holiday favorites on Thursday, November 26. The menu consists of roasted turkey, honey baked ham,

steamship round of beef, peel and eat shrimp, mashed potatoes with gravy, candied yams, cornbread dressing,

green beans, macaroni and cheese, cranberry sauce, a salad bar and more pies, pastries and cobblers than

you’ll know what to do with! There are two time options for the Thanksgiving

meal, 11am-12:30pm or 1:30-3:30pm. The cost is $18.95 for adults, $5.95 for children 5-12 and free for children 4 and under. Also join Club Hood on December 6 for a special Holiday themed Sunday Brunch. Hopefully you are not on the naughty list this year, because Santa Claus will be on hand for pictures and for children (or adults) to make special gift requests. The special Holiday themed brunch will feature a menu of Cornish hens, pork tenderloin, apple stuffing, baked yams, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and a carving station of turkey, ham and beef. Also, enjoy a traditional breakfast buffet including a made to order omelet and waffle station, golden pancakes, fluffy

he Army offers many great resources to Soldiers and Families in an effort to make coping with military life a little easier.

Education, relocation, parenting, stress - you name it - Mili-tary OneSource is available to help you with just about any need. Free services include counseling, budget planning, emergency child care and more. Also, through Military OneSource, you are able to obtain free copies of books, CDs, DVDs and other materials. Take advantage of online support resources including message board communities, webinars and newsletters. Military One-Source is provided by the Department of Defense for Active-Duty, Guard and Reserve service members and their Families. To access these great resources and find out more information, visit www.militaryonesource.com. Also, Fort Hood’s Army Community Service is a great place to receive more information about Military OneSource benefits. Visit ACS in the Rivers Building, Bldg 121, on 761st Tank Battalion Avenue and T.J. Mills Boulevard. Another equally valuable service to the Army community is the Army Family Covenant. The covenant represents the Army’s continuing efforts to provide Soldiers and Families a quality of life commensurate with their service. The covenant is committed to building partnerships that support strength, resiliency and readiness. The mission is built around the idea that the strength of our Soldiers comes from the strength of their Families. The Army Family Covenant officially launched in 2007, but this upcom-ing year a renewed focus has been put on achieving its mission. The Great Place is re-launching efforts to reignite the fire of support behind the Fort Hood community as LTG Robert W. Cone signs the Army Family Covenant November 20 at 12 pm at Club Hood. The covenant brings many great benefits to Soldiers and Families from free child care and children’s programs to training and counseling to free entertainment and activities. Over the course of the next year, keep a look out for the “G.O.O.F. Off” campaign, aimed at making it easier for Soldiers and Families to “Get Out On Fort Hood”. This campaign will include free and reduced prices at Fort Hood facilities, workshops and training and more. Our mission is to make the Great Place greater and the Army Family Covenant is a key part of this effort. s

It is the link that connects Family Members to the Army. Through the years, AFTB has changed the lives of individuals and lessened the burden of those learn-ing to adjust to Army life. It empowers Families by giving them the tools to be self-sufficient and better prepared for day-to-day military living. Very rarely, will you run into a military spouse who has been around the Army for more than 5 years who has not in some way been involved with AFTB. Before AFTB, many Family Members had to learn the Army by trial and error, but AFTB has taken the guess work and uncertainty out of Army life. Through many growing pains, we have evolved to be the successful link that we are today.

Army Family Team Building provides an oppor-

tunity to get more involved with the Army com-

munity; to learn more and connect with spouses.

Army Family Team Building is a volunteer led pro-

gram that has an empowering effect on people.

Our instructors are comprised of Family Members

and Soldiers who take pride in helping others.

There is something in AFTB for all mem-bers of the Army Family. For Soldiers looking to acquire promotion points, AFTB classes are included in the eligible Army Personnel and Family courses. Family Members, whether they have been in the Army for 10 days or 10 or more years, acquire a wealth of knowledge and skills. Of course there is always the op-portunity to network. Level I is comprised of the basics; pretty much what you must know to make life within the Army easier. Level II has some great info on leadership skills; it’s really great for FRG lead-ers, housing community mayors, etc. Level III is what I like to think of as life skills; it enhances professional growth. Keep in mind – all classes are offered for free, and for anyone interested in becoming an AFTB instructor we have training for that as well. Also, to help meet the requirements of our great diverse community – these courses are of-fered in Spanish. There are a lot of challenges that Army Fami-lies face…just remember, AFTB is still around connecting you to the Army! Come join us on Wednesday, December 16 at Lane Volunteer Center from 11:00-1:30 pm as we spotlight this program in celebration of AFTB’s Birthday. For additional information, please call 254-286-6600. The AFTB office is located in Bldg 16005, on the corner of T.J. Mills and Old Ironsides. s

T he holiday season is upon us and that means hectic schedules, lots of er-rands and a to-do list a mile long. With

all the commotion going on around us, it’s important to take the time to do something as a Family and reconnect.

On Tuesday, December 8, Child, Youth & School Services will be hosting its 4th Annual Victorian Tea for the Families of Fort Hood. In the past, it has been a very successful event with an average attendance of 300 people.

This year the tea will take place in the ball-room of the Phantom Warrior Center, Bldg. 194, on 37th Street. It will be a social and elegant gathering that is designed to help youth and their Families wind down during the hectic holiday season. Best of all, the Victorian Tea is free and open to all service members and their Families. All ages are welcome so bring the whole Family!

Looking for an excuse to play dress up? The Victorian Tea is the perfect opportunity to have some fun and pretend like you’re back in the Victorian era. Participants are encour-aged to dress in Sunday best clothes and get creative with the Victorian theme by adding some gloves, a fancy hat or whatever you think fits the bill! Last year there were quite a few little Victorian ladies and gentlemen who made their appearance!

The tea will begin at 5 pm and tea, of course, will be served. There will also be light finger foods for snacking. The agenda for the evening includes a Victorian fashion show, traditional tea readings, guest speakers and much more.

The evening is sure to be a lot of education-al fun and a great opportunity for some parent-child bonding. Put down to to-do list, take a breath and bring your Family to the Victorian Tea on December 8. s

Veterans

eing part of the military, Veteran’s Day has a special meaning to all of us at the

“Great Place.” Celebrated yearly on November 11 the federal holiday is the designated national holiday set aside to recognize the sacrifices made daily by our country’s brave service members, though we admire our Soldiers every day at Fort Hood. This great day has been celebrated nationwide since 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed the holiday. Also referred to as Armistice Day, President Wilson said, “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice...”. President Wilson was referring to World War I, which just ended at the time, but this statement holds true today as thousands of our Soldiers- many from Fort Hood- are serving our country, fighting another war. This Veteran’s Day pay your respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country by giving their life in defense of this great nation. From all of us at FMWR, thank you to the brave service men and women - and their Families – that have protected our lands’ freedom! s
